Okay I am hiding from the god-awful mess I started on the dance thread and feeling quite inspired from the AMV.org forum I now post this:
What not to say at a Convention. here are just a few of my favs that I've heard already:

1-Yelling "GIRLS! HOT YAOI ACTION!" in a crowded anime convention hall.
2-If someone asks you about your outfit respond," I'm extra 324 from (pick anime title) episode (number or title) scene 5, i'm the one dieing in the backround on the right, want to see my cosplay
3- "CHAIR!!!"
4- "I have Pocky." I swear... some people would be able to hear that from like 50 feet away.
5- Shouting in a crowded Pre Reg line "F*** DDR!"

I feel like david letterman here.... :)

Oh yeah right.  You think you can escape that easily, you're wrong.  You and Magnus are gonna go clean that up pronto, missy.  *hands you a sponge and a whisk broom* now get to work!

Here's another one...

"Look!  It's Man-Faye!"

and here's one to NEVER ask Tom the Fanboy:

"Can we see what's under the robe?"

One thing I always remind myself when I go to a con is that while the girl in the chainmail battle bikini may be on display, she is not on display specifically for my benefit. generally speaking, any rude comments to someone in a revealing cosplay outfit, especially if it involves haggling over price, is considered very bad karma.  8O

In general, rude comments to girls in revealing outfits when they've got hammers of death/swords/etc, is NOT the smartest move ^.^;;;

Amen,

At a con, people may decide to live out their fantasies and perhaps not make the best costume choice for their body.  Or perhaps they don't know how they could have modified the costume to make it more flattering for them.

Please give these people a BREAK!  It's amazing how acute your hearing becomes if you are a little bit uncomfortable in what you are wearing and even comments said a good distance away can be heard.  If you really are that mean of a person that has to say, "Did you see all the pimples that Yuna had!" or something like that, save it for your room or someplace private.

And as Michael mentioned, just because they are living out their fantasy by wearing an outfit, doesn't mean you get to live out your fantasy by not taking no for an answer from that person.  Say hello.  Look the person in the EYES.  Talk to them, tell them you like their costume.  Ask what kind of anime they like.  But I can promise you that the line, "You know what would look good on you?......Me!" isn't going to work.  (Well, there is about a 1% chance that it might, but if it doesn't you've lost ANY chance)

(Oh, and if you are over 18, notice what color badge you have.  If you see another badge for the same amount of days as you and it's a different color, that means the person is under 18.  Keep that in mind too)

Never insult a girl, period.  She can always con someone bigger than you into making you clean the carpet with your teeth.

Check the gender of the person in question before hitting on them. (One of my friends was so exited when he finally got an Asuka cosplayer's phone number that I didn't have the heart to tell him that the Asuka in question was just a really cute, and really effeminate guy. ^.^; )

Never, EVER start a Jin-Roh debate near me. (I've watched the movie nearly once a week for three years.  I am the final judge on EVERYTHING for that movie! )

Don't shout anything about free pocky anywhere, you will cause a stampede.

Don't wear pefume, EVER!!!  You will always cause the one athsmatic in the crowd to have an attack, and their friends will all hurt you.  Badly.  And I will help, after the doctors have me hooked up to an oxygen machine.  Which I will beat you with. >.<

Don't get into a Goku vs Akira fight.  It makes you look stupid.

As funny as the pick up lines in the Anime Jackass movies are, you will get laughed at for trying them.

^.^

My advice, be nice, congrat people on cool costumes or ideas, but don't look them in the eyes for too long.  It's seen as a threat to some people (I'll do anything to break off eye contact unless I'm checking out someone's contacts or creepy/cool eye color.)

I hear ANY complaints from minors about adults hitting on them, the adults have to talk to ME!!! >.< (I;ve dealt with this a lot lately, as my friend Sam -yes, she should be my gardner- has had this issue too.  I don't take kindly to it. )

Not only that, Perfume/Cologne are not substitutes for being clean anyway.

And check the label of that stuff you should be putting under your arms in the morning... if it only says deodorant, go to the store and get a new one that also says antiperspirant (or a combination of both).  Deodorant pretty much just covers up smells, antiperspirant stops the sweat in that area so you'll be all nice and fresh for that much longer.

No one who needs these posts ever seem to be the ones that read them, but here is my message in hopes of converting a few people:

You know all those cool shirts you've been collecting over the years? We want to see as many of them as possible!  I know you have that one favorite you want to wear all weekend, but really, you have so many you could show us!  They also last longer if you are clean when you put them on (cross my heart).  Before you come to the con, make sure to take a shower, use extra soap anywhere hair grows (special shampoo or hair soap is good for your hair).  Then dry yourself off, put on antiperspitant, and put on a different cool shirt.

In fact, start looking through your laundry pile today (right now if you want) and pick out your favorite 3 or 4 shirts and wash them.  Make sure they are all clean and ready to go for the con!  Wash other clothes to wear in the mean time so you can be sure your favorites are ready to go!

something i hope not to hear, is "you're too old to be here" or "are you here for your kid" something like that.

people of a wide range of ages enjoy anime and related artforms, and this is a beautiful thing.

this thread affords and opportunity to point out that sean, our con chair, is holding a forum that is basically anime con etiquette 101. hopefully it will help.

That's us.  Taking something funny and making it serious.

We're really good at bending things the other way too-- taking something serious and making it really silly.

well i think there are both sides to this topic. i love the david letterman joke thing...but also, there are folks who can be (intentionally or unintentionally) insulting to others with their words. i'm hoping for a safe, inclusive, and hilariously enjoyable con for all. bearing in mind what kinds of choices in communications can help towards that goal is a good thing, whether obtained via humor or serious discussion. imho. :D

Yeah I think I am the kind of Final Fantasy nut who would break his buster sword over your @ss if you even murmered a bad word about Final Fantasy, unless of course you were comparing one FF game to another, then its all coolies. But just don't say that you didn't like the series based on Final Fantasy Mystic Quest or something like that. (And by the way that game did not deserve the title of Final Fantasy) LOL

If a guy is ever disguised cleverly enough for me to say he looks cute, rather than be embarrassed, I will shake his hand and give him a compliment. ;) Because if someone is going to cosplay in drag, they might as well do it properly.

But if I ever went so far as to hit on one (heck, that'd be unlikely enough even for a REAL girl), yes, I do think that would be sufficient cause for embarrassment.

However, please do not resort to skirt-flipping, people. :)

"Final Fantasy sucks!" ;)

Well, actually, I won't say that in public. What I will say is "Final Fantasy is highly overrated," and I'll try not to say it with my back turned to a large group of FF cosplayers. But if they DO hear it, I will own up to it, and tell them why I think so.

Evil Mystic Quest... evil.

I, even as an ff fan can totaly agree that it's overrated. Granted, the games are awesome if you like rpg's, but I've played plenty of games that are either on par or better than some ff games that never got a chance because of final fantasy fanatics.

Yet, I haven't found an ff game that I didnt like, so at least I know they're consistant.

...Except Mystic Quest? ;)

That's okay though, I'm not going to say it "counts." It was a strange divergence, anyway, so I've heard.

Yeah, Final Fantasy is somewhat consistent... but I have no trouble finding RPGs I like, even while bouncing around from one company to another.

With Final Fantasy, for me, it's like being promised chocolate cheesecake, and getting Pocky instead.  Sure, I like Pocky... but after getting promised cheesecake, I want m'dang cheesecake!!

Anyway, go ahead and get angry when someone bashes FF (as long as it's all in good fun), but only if they're being unreasonable about it. After all, "it sucks" isn't much of an argument. (assuming they're looking for a fan argument, of course)

Too true.

I also find Final Fantasy to be over rated.

Also, why is it called "Final" Fantasy?

When was the first one, and why hasn't any of these so-called "final" ones ACTUALLY been the Final one?

I find .hack to be a much better RPG in my opinion. All FF is good for now is smooth images. I'd like to see it ACTUALLY end, however it won't.

My great great great great great great great grandchildren will be dispising Final Fantasy 246.  :(

DON'T SNEEZE ON PEOPLE!!! (I hate the cold >.<)

Don't eat strange foods offered by strange people/tentacles.

If you know you are allergic to something, or that it upsets your stomach badly (lactose intolerance sucks   , check labels on ALL food products (Vitawater constains a huge amount of lactose for some strange reason.), it will make your Con much more fun. ^.^

Spandex is NOT a right!!! >.<

Heh, much as I like this (off-) topic, continuing is making Riverspree cry. So, back on topic.... I think....

PrincessFrodo seems to be riding the line between jokes and serious advice...

Hmm, how about this:

- Never shout "Of COURSE it's real!!!" within earshot of con security.

Some silly advice:

If you see two people in Lina and Gourry costumes, never follow them. NEVER.

If the Sailor Senshi who are approaching you all have beards and beer guts, it is considered impolite to run away screaming.

Some serious advice:

Always respect everyone's personal space! In a crowded event, personal space is at a premium. Never touch ANY part of ANYONE'S person or costume unless you have their permission.

If you are going to be meeting a girlfriend or boyfirend at the con, or hoping to find one, remember the difference between public and private behavior. Nobody else really wants to watch you make out.

If you DO meet another consenting adult at the con, make sure you have protection, and use it. I remember a sci-fi convention where they handed out condoms to everybody who showed up and looked like they even might be of age. Nobody wants to come home from a convention with a disease -- or an unplanned pregancy!

NO MEANS NO! NO ALWAYS MEANS NO! If someone insists on pressing their attentions on you after you have refused them, that's felony assault. GET AWAY FROM THAT PERSON IMMEDIATELY, no matter how you have to do it, and CONTACT SECURITY IMMEIDTALEY! Try and remember the person's bagde name so the organziers can deal with them appropriately. (If I were the concom, I'd be kicking them out and handing them over to the cops if they tried that stunt....)

Always treat minors with respect. Don't assume they're unknowledgable because they have an under 18 badge. just because someone is dressed as Misty doesn't mean they don't like other anime too.

It really IS OK to like Poemon or Yu-Gi-Oh!, so don;t insult people for expressing a liking for those shows.

If a behavior would be unethical anywhere else, it is also unethical at a con.

If you require medication for any condition, be it medial or psychiatric or whatever, take your meds with you to the con and maintain your usual dosage schedule. Your health is more improtant than anything else while you are at a con. You can't enjoy the con if you ignore your health! Also, have a plan in case you have a medical emergency and make sure your friends know it in case you lose consicousness.

If you use alcohol at the con, use it responsibly and only in a location where alcohol is permitted. And never use illegal or street drugs at a con -- this could get the roganizers, as well as you, in a hgue amount of trouble, and we really don't want that.

Make sure you get adequate food and fluids. Again, it comes down to doing what is neccesary to keep your health and strength up so you can enjoy the con.

Kimberly always was hot.  And why should I feel guilty saying that? She's probably about the same age as me, as I was in high school when the show was on.

I watched Power Rangers for awhile for the exact same reason my sister now watches Live Action Sailor Moon. But that's also why I don't watch Sailor Moon with her: the "corny goodness" has worn off.

By the way, you guys might want to make a "Conventions 101" topic if you want to go at this subject seriously. After all, this topic is titled "Things not to SAY at a con."

My next Thing:

well going back on the sci fi con someone mentioned I guess saying "They are giving away free condoms" to a crowd of horny/hormone raging teenagers is also a bad idea.

I was at sakura con and I gave out free glow in the dark bracelet so if kumoricon has a rave That could be something else not to say. Well I could say that there are freebies in the dealers hall and I get a premo place in line as the masses go off in search.... Mua Ha Ha Ha (evil laugh)

I was too old for "Billy" but his actor was legal age.  :)

Quite frankly, all the girls I knew who watched it liked Tommy.

Its true though, Tommy was so cool. I heard hes back on a new one, too.

Oh, and its also Ok to like the Dragon Ball series, without beng repeatedly labled a newbie.

Oh, and I do watch Sailor Moon Live Action, though, I am kinda mad about what happend to Zoisite...

"Chair" has never happened at Sakura or Kumori and let's drop the subject before people get curious.  I know my MCs will cut if off if anyone starts...

First, if someone could pm me about this 'Chair' thing, as I'm dying with curiosity. ^.^;

Second, when standing in line, do not ask the girl standing in front of you "Are those real?" ^.^

And thidly, ramen is not a food group, or a valuable costume material.  I don't care if you wear it, but please don't wear it. ^.^;
No, I'm not insane.  I'm just... happy.

I'm joining in but to be funny.
1. "Excuse me, but your costume isn't covering...um... *points*"
2. "Did you put on deodorant?"
3. "Can valet park my mecha?"
4. "What's anime?"
5. "What's with the apple-juggling, bikini-wearing monkey?"

That's all I could think of for now...

"DBZ RULEZ!!!11ONE"

Although, it'd be difficult to say 11ONE in speech without sounding incredibly strange. :P

That's not a joke, people will come up to the door and ask that! >.< (It's happened a few times to me at Sakura Con, and I wasn't on door duty very long... O.o )

"Dude, I saw that cartoon on Toonami once!"

"Nice shoes, wanna fusk?"

"Does this smell like clorophorm to you?"

"My Picachu is more realistic than your Picachu!"

And never, EVER, under any circumstance shout "Look, it's Man-Faye!" in a crowded hallway. >.<

I'm taking this from a Foxtrot comic strip so it's not an original idea...
Y'know when comics "swear" how they have subtitute symbols for the words?  Try saying the following instead of swearing...
"Dagger, thunder bolt, skull, asterik, cloud, exclamation point, asterik..."

No offense to the Imari cosplayer for this (your costume was very good) but...

ok someone probably ddi this but how about these

holds your fingers in that vulcan greeting type thing (I forgot what it is called) and say "live long and prosper"

"Sailormoon sucks"  at least dont do this near any sailormoon fans.

Anime is cartoons a vst majority of people seem to feel that there is a difference between anime and cartoons.  saying anime is cartoons is regarded as offensive by a lot of anime fans.  (yes even though someone pointed out that in japan anime is used for everything animated including cartoons)

quote shakespear  most of us wont even know what you are talkin about

"All anime is nothing but sailormoon, pokemon and DBZ"  you will cause a mob of angry anime fans by sayign that.

cant think of anymore.
