DDR tournament - how many interested?
« on: August 26, 2004, 09:36:29 am »
So, I'm sort of new here. Any one who was at last year's Kumori Con might have seen me in the art room, where I picked up a nasty pocky habit. This year I've been commanded to run the DDR tournament. So!

This year's tournament is going to be played on cobalt flux pads hooked up to a stepmania machine with about a million songs. I'm still looking into brackets and such things. We're going to have some really great prizes, but I'll let staze announce those.  We also intend to have at least one, if not several free play stations set up for ddr the rest of the time. At this point we have access to 3 cf hard pads, and my lesser hard pad, so we'll have one station for sure.

I mostly need to know how many people are interested, and if we have significant interest in a second competition. Something like doubles, freestyle or flare or whatever you call it, or something else I've not heard of. I imagine we'll need to get signups going on here, or perhaps plan to do that at the con.

Any suggestions, please please put them here. I'm new at this!

also: is there great interest in a 'standard' level bracket, in addition to heavy? I hate to exclude people who don't play heavy, so I'm trying to find a way to make that work . . .

DDR DDR DDR!!
*does a crazy happy dance*
It would be nice if there were light, standard and heavy, but it's time consuming and not really fair because then standard players enter light, heavy players enter standard, and only completely crazy people enter heavy.
But no matter what categories you have I'd be interested ^.^
Are you going to do prizes?

Well, but then there's also people like me who have just started out, but would still like the fun of competition play.

I can't even do standard (or haven't yet tried) but can do most songs on light mode.

Maybe you could have different levels of competition, just to seperate out those who are Heavy-moders and want to play hard at the Con, and those who aren't very good yet, or don't want to play as hard.

Just a thought... Heh...

I think it's a very good idea to have a heavy level and then a standard/light level. We have two main prizes to hand out, but I'm not sure how they want to hand those out. At this point it looks like we'll do a normal heavy competition, and an easier (maybe just for fun - less competitive for sure) one with standard and light songs.

Well, if you only have two prizes to give out, you could give out prizes to the heavy and standard divisions, and no prize to the light level winner.

But, there might not be enough machines...Hm...

I'm interested in watching people fall on their butts! ^.^

The one time I played DDR, I was playing stip DDR, and even then it was only fun because I was teasing the other guys about being out of shape. ^.^; (Each individual earing counted as a seperate article of clothing, and I had four piercings more than the other two. ^.^ )

I also fully support NOT having a stip DDR tourney.  Images of Sailor Bubba and Man-Faye go through my mind when I think about that. >.<
No, I'm not insane.  I'm just... happy.

I can't say much right now, but I'm expecting a nice little box from a new friend of mine at Konami.  As of now we'll have plenty of prizes for DDR competitions.

Don't get too excited, I'm not talking about copies of the game or pads and such, but nice little cool prizes.

I'd love to see even an absolute beginner catagory where one could actually be disqualified and bumped up a level for being too good!  Anyone think that would be fun?  I'd like to compete in that, but if I did win, I'd forfit my prize to the next person down the list since I'm staff.  :)

(by the way, it's "strip")

Strip DDR? LOL! Man, I'll challenge you to that anytime... Just kidding. ;)

As for the actual tournament...

Hi! I'm the guy you were talking to by email. But I'm sure you knew that. :) I said it to you before, but I'll say it publicly: if you have a lower-difficulty division with prizes, you will get people entering it who shouldn't be. It just happens, even among relatively honest people. :?

The best I could recommend would be to make the prizes for the upper division MUCH bigger than the lower division.  The difference should be big enough that no skilled player will consider entering the lower division.

But I'd really just recommend not splitting it at all, because it's not really fair to the players who get 4th, 5th, and 6th place (and so on down the line) in the upper division.

I think that having a Freestyle division instead would be great. However... I ran the DDR tournament last year, and I tried to have a Freestyle division, but nobody entered. If you think you can get enough people this year, then hey, go for it.

Actually I have never tried DDR and I majorly suck at dancing (well what do you expect I am white LOL) But if there was a begginners DDR with prizes I might just want to embarrass myself a little.

I still want to be in the "I swear I haven 't played more than a few times and I suck," turny!

Just have the crowd call it.  If someone doesn't belong in that catagory when they start to play, have the crowd start chanting, "level up...level up" and then that person has to stop and they can start play in the regular beginners catagory.

Really, there are enough DDR based prizes!  I can help set this up on Saturday sometime.  I want to compete, but as staff, my prize (if any) would go to the next ranked person.

White people 0wnz3r at DDR. 8)

This is mostly because white people value their dignity much less than black people when it comes to dancing.

Don't believe me? The arcade at the U of O is just down the hall from the Black Student Union, and yet I never see any of my friends from over there come over to play DDR. ;)

Although... I did meet a black person with the Konami logo shaved into the back of his head at Sakura Con two years ago, so I guess I could be wrong......

It's just an idea I had and am suggesting.  I'm not even good enough to be a "beginner" and it might be kind of fun to have a little time where a bunch of us who are in that catagory can play in sort of a competition, and know we're not going to have some "master player" right before and after us.  I wouldn't feel as self conscience about it.  Besides, we'd be funny to watch.  :)  I'd run with it, but it just depends on the amount of time the people in the game rooms have.

Maybe everyone but the person who comes in last could get a sticker that says, "I am NOT the worlds worst DDR player!"  (I'll have sticker paper with me, so I could print them up)

I think it would be fair if there was a tournament or a time where beginner's and those who have barely played could play freely without the... um... (looking for a good word here)... shadow(?) of advanced players hanging over them.

BTW, I am not a beginner.  I can do level 9 songs.  I'm not trying to brag, I'm just saying an advance player does think beginners should have an uninteruppted time to play.  Remember, at one point in time, advance players were beginners too.

What you say is quite valid.  I may be able to pass Max300 now, but the first time I played, I failed Xanadu. A large part of it was because nobody there bothered to explain to me how it was played.  After that first experience, I didn't touch it until six months later when a friend lent me a home pad.

So yes, I quite support a "Beginner's Hour" at the very least. If it were free play, the rule could be "no Heavy or Standard!" or for intermediate, "no Heavy!". I bet it'd go over well. :)

How about "No Heavy level 6 or over"?  That way intermediate players can do songs like "Butterfly" on Heavy.

Well I think it should be for those who never played kinda thing. It would be unfair to even have someone with 6 hours of play in the tourny. I don't know what songs are played the only thing that I think I know about it is that it is on PS2 and has a 9 panel weird dance floor kinda thing. My gaming is RPGs and stuff so I rarely go outside that genre...

Well, there are many different people here. Most at which I hear aren't that advanced in DDR yet.
Usually, when my arcade does a tourney, (this is straight, win or lose basis) is that we pair people in two. We have a seed song (a song everyone must play, which is usually drawn randomly) and see whoever wins between the two. Then pair two up from that and do standard songs 6 feet or under in difficulty. then pair another set after all of those, and do heavy 7feet or higher and no 10's (but that can be put back in if you wanted). Thus you find the winner as you keep going.
The way we score is something like...:
1 perfect = +2
1 great = +1

so it's greaded on the most perfects and greats.

Just an idea.

Then, if it seemed unfair to most people, who can always have a softcore tourney for beginers. So they dont feel like they were ripped off.

I've seen it played, and I don't know how it works exactly...but it looks like loads of fun!

If there is going to be a beginner's hour, I'm totally up for it!!  I've only played once (Gotta go all the way to Long Beach for a pad), and I didn't know how it worked, so I failed miserably....but I'd love to learn and to try!!  ^_^

Do let us know what you decide!
