So how long is too long for an AMV? I had a 7min song and edited it down to 5min... is that short enough?

To be honest, I prefer AMV to be at most 3 minutes long, if it's longer than that I get bored and annoyed. I'd also like to see less AMV to linkin park, evanessence, or annoying repetitive techno. But that's just my opinion :3 g'luck!

Yeah I agree to stay away from those songs. If you just wanna make an action packed AMV, id go for a song without lyrics for your first one, and make sure to pay attention to the beats of the song, thats where scenes usally change. If your doing a story one, thats when you got to pay attention to the beats and the lyrics.

I dont think 5 min is to long, I actually like long AMVS. But yeah most of them around 3min.  :D

Honestly after 4 minutes or so I'd worry about running out of relevant content. I made one video and it was exactly 4 minutes.

I'm thinking about submitting it to this year's contest. I wanna show some people, but dunno if that'd ruin/spoil my chances at winning? It might not seem as exciting if you've seen it before. :O

I guess I could show if people asked in private or want me to post it to board.

As long as there is an actual connection between musical content and visual content, I'm good for as long as is needed. I've made several AMV's, all of which were between 3.5 and 4.5 minutes. It's all about how it is edited and the effect one is going for. If you are asking about time in regard to the AMV competition, however, there is (obviously) a stricter policy. The rules page addresses it, it says that the AMV's should be at most about 4.5-5 minutes. So, I'm sure you'd be fine. As long as it is all relevant to the overall concept/theme/goal of the AMV. ^_^ I look forward ot seeing it, and everyone else's, by the way. ^_0

I'm doing "War Pigs" by Black Sabath to Evangelion

Someone's been playing Guitar Hero.

That matchup sounds really cool. Hope I can make it to the contest this year.

I would like t olearn how to make AMV's.  I'd also like a computer that would actually be able to do it.  I don't think the one in my room could & I know the one I'm on now wouldn't.  I have a few ideas for some.

AMV's are best when they are about 3:30 to 4:00 in my opinion. Also, some of the best AMV's are to songs that almost nobody knows, not Linkin Park and those kind of bands. Don't get me wrong, I love Linkin Park, but there are too many AMV's to their music. Check out my AMV's on YouTube! My user name is "troutisyourmaster666". They may not be the best, but I'm proud of them.

If you can keep the audience interested during the entirety of the video, then by all means make a 10 minute long AMV. I won't joke with you when I say it's a hell of a challenge to make something that long, much less something continuously engaging. It's hard enough for me to belt out a decent four-minute video.

Keep in mind, I'm talking about the internet and the AMV community. When it comes to convention contests, keep it to three or four minutes. Like others have said, it can drag the contest on if one video takes up too much time.

Ignore the fact that I turned in a seven minute video last year >_>

Speaking as someone who hopes to one day make an AMV, I would go for something around the 4 minute mark.  On the other hand, if you're pretty sure the content will keep everyone's attention, then go for as long as you'd like.
My favorite long AMV was "Lord of the Yen" (All of the Lord of the Ring Trailers' audio to Azumanga Daioh).  That one was over 9 minutes long and brillant.
