Han-Bok in anime? (korean dress)
« on: August 22, 2004, 11:37:41 pm »
sadly, i did not have the time, money nor skill to make my dream costume from card captor sakura (yet).

this was, in part, because most of my weekends have been tied up in pirate-themed larps.

ironically enough, this weekend i was at one of these (society for creative anachronism) camping events, and lo and behold found for sale a Han-Bok.

This is the traditional Korean dress...sleeveless, long, poofy at bottom, long sleeves very short in back and front with long ties, at top

i want to wear it to the con and i'm hoping that there is at least one anime character who would wear such an item...either a traditionally dressed character in a korean anime, or perhaps what a girl would wear in a japanese anime that would clue in viewers that she is korean?

to my understanding these are also worn as wedding dresses

any clue anyone?

anyone else wearing korean clothes?

I can't think of anyone off the top of my head, but you will fit in quite well in any Asian themed clothing.

The mother (shown in flashbacks) wears a Han-Bok in the anime Oseam. (A Korean Anime that I don't think anyone but me has seen.)
No, I'm not insane.  I'm just... happy.

I know of Han bok(I am part Korean after all...).  From my understanding, the han bok is used for various occasions.  I believe its like the Korean verison of the kimono.  Some are worn as wedding dresses or for special occasions while others were considered formal wear with different designs depending on a person's status.  Also note that there are male and female verisons(I think my mother, who is Korean, had me wear one on my first birthday as its considered a family holiday in Korea).  Of course, there isn't very many anime/manga that uses it(since they're mostly JP).  However, if you read the manga(or manwha as its a Korean comic) Ragnarok published by TokyoPop, you would know the character Fenris Fenrir later wears a verison of the han bok(I think in vol 6 or 7 the GN).  I also remember of an anime series(don't remember name sorry) that is based on a Korean folktale, but I don't know if they made look more Japanese or not.

you have no idea how happy this post made me.

i can't explain all the detail to you, but fenrir (the demigod in norse mythology) is actually very important to me (though i have not read this manga).

i owe you for this!

if you could bring those to the con for me to look at i would be so grateful!

i will immediately seek the manga tomorrow!

You might ask on a more anime oriented forum about Anime based on Korean Folk tales.  (Anime on DVD might be a good place).  Once you get a name, Google will really be your friend.

Well Rem went and posted on the TUNAC boards, which currently has about four users, I replied there, but will also post here in case she looks here first, I'm bringing some of the manga mentioned so she can look thru it.
And now I'm a catgirl?

Yeah let me know when I could get ahold of you. BTW I got most of my Ragnarok manga at Suncoast at VRC, I don't know if they are still doing it, but they were selling manga between 7 and 9.99 for two for $15.
