does any one know if nntindo import game work on american ds

heres the deal my younger brothe rwould dearly love to get the game mother 3, which would be the american version of earthbound 2 but it was never realeased here (stoopid nintindo...) anywho he had a ds and an advanced can he play it on those? is there a way to play it? thanks
