What do you know about the Kimono and the Obi?
« on: August 01, 2004, 02:48:08 pm »
I am doing a research paper on the Kimono and Obi and would like to know what you know about them.  I appreciate all the help I could get and any book references, web-sites and what you know. If you know someone who knows anything about the subject even.

the Kimono is a beautiful masterpiece and a practical garment that I would like to know more about.

Any questions you have might help me get a better idea what to look for too.

Heh, you asked EXACTLY the right questin for my frame of mind right now! ^.^

My Kimono links:
http://www.japanesekimono.com/index.htm
http://www.risingsunimports.com/articles/underkimono/index.php

There are other sites online about the history of the Kimono that I don't have bookmarked, these are for the wearing and creation of one, so I suggest using google with all your bandwidth. ^.^

I've heard good things about "The Book of Kimono" by Noriko Yamanaka. Things like it's good for a pretty comprehensive introduction, has nice instructions on wearing kimonos etc. If you can, check to see if your local library has it otherwise it doesn't look like it costs too much on amazon.
If it's really nice pictures you want though, ask at a Japanese bookstore if they have any books or magazines on the subject. Kimonos aren't intuitive for many modern Japanese people so chance are pretty high that there will be some books about it. Downside is that those pretty imported photo books cost a fair bit.
Hope that helps ^_^

I found this links page while I was looking for some more info on how to tie my darn obi (jeez you'd think that there'd be an easier way...) http://www.storyanime.com/Links/Wearing.html Has lots of links to different pages from general info to history, etc... I think one of the sites even has some essays and stuff... good luck :)

IF anyone needs any pics of a kimono, I will be wearing an authentic one to the Con, with at least two layers.

And yes, I am making ALL of the layers myself, and hand sewing them without a machine. ^.^;

I'm actually really good at hand sewing (for those who remember my Chii costume, it was half hand sewn) so I;m not too worried about not getting it done, I'm just worried about not actually sleeping for the next month, and getting the kimono to the Con.

Kimonos take up a lot of space. >.<

Sumire Kanzaki
« Reply #10 on: November 05, 2004, 02:54:05 am »
Hey K-Fans,

Yes there are plenty of Anime and Manga series that display kimonos and obis.  I bring Sumire Kanzaki up, because one of my statuettes I bought at Otakon 2002 is her wearing an obi.  It is a nice bow.

Anyway I merely learn about these kind of things off "TV tidbits" [random shows on TV], however I have seen some "edutainment" programs off PBS, etc.

Yeah look around on the internet and I am sure you will find something legitimate.
"You drive like a baboon in heat!"
"It is down to you and me mister fly."
"Oh I am sorry, did I break your concentration?"
"You no mess with Lo Wang."
