Great stuff guys!
I'm glad that this particular thread is active. It's good to know what's going on. Thank you MamaKat for looking up some legal stuff. I know that I can operate "freelance" so long as I don't do ANYTHING outside my own scope of practice - kinda on a "good samaritan with strings" thing. With you being an RN. I can operate under your license. I'll just call you my medical director(ess). :-) .
There was a comment posted above about how the 'Con would like to avoid dealing with first-aid type of stuff. I have done quite a few major events (Football games, concerts, etc) and I do have a little bad news.

The 'Con ultimately IS responsible for a certain amount of assitance.

I know this probably should be addressed elsewhere, but it is important. I think a full operating room would be ridiculous, but in an event that people are profiting (non-charity) and have a large amount of people expecting to attend, you must have something. Each state differs. I don't want to bust any chops, and it's really awesome nothing major has happened (knock on wood). But, if something major DID happen, it would look REALLY bad for the people running the show, if there was not reasonable help.

However, it does seem it's been covered for awhile now, I just can't help the public health and safety guy inside me from coming out :-).

So, thank you Mamakat for the info, I do ask any other people from previous 'Cons to toss out any info on common injuries - if any - that you've seen in previous years. Thanks again!
What would YOU do for a Klondike Bar?

I won't be functioning as any sort of medical help for the con but I do have my First Aid and safety training from being an Eagle Scout.

However the reason I'm popping up is that I'm maintaining the convenetion maps right now and I wanted to ask where you guys would be. If you get a first Aid station from the convention let me know so I can put it on the map.

Here are my maps of the conspace.
http://pockyclub.elite-otaku.net/maps.html
This information is kept as up to date as possible.

I know that the Ops suite will be on the third floor. Other convention spaces are as of yet unknown.

Another thing to consider... this from personal experience at a previous convention... I somehow managed to cut myself and after going to the hotel front desk, the concierge pointed me to the on-staff hotel nurse, who took me to the staff area of the hotel where they had a mini nurse's station packed with all kinds of medical necessities. Of course, all I needed was a bandaid and some antibiotic, but it was nice to see that if I'd managed to damage myself more thoroughly, that the hotel had sufficient supplies to handle most first aid situations. The nurse told me that many hotels in the area have staff nurses.  Someone should check on whether this hotel has a staff nurse and what kind of supplies the nurse has just in case our first aid kits are missing something we need.

The main thing a medical staff at the con would be for is to serve really minor needs that DO NOT involve dispensing any kind of med over or under counter and to be there to stabilize the situation (either medically or to clear the area) and wait the 3-4 minutes for an ambulance.  Also something like CPR is covered under the Good Samaritan rule as long as you have a card recognized by that state.  Any thing more complex than CPR and you would have to be licensed by that state.  Something like an event medical staff like my friend is they are ready to work in any state having gove over the peper work and have nurses and medics who operate under the license of the Dr who owns the company

the point you brought up is a very important one von
and thats why i startd diving throught the regs for the army

once we go through our CLS and medic courses we become
nationally recognized (licensed)

meaning we can perform medical procetures "?anywhere?"
that the army serves until the proper medical staff arrive

dont quote me b/c between now and then the reg might
change

if it does ill be notified of the change (however minor or major)
and in turn notify ops

but i dont see any changes in the immediate future
so i should be coverd for now

now i dont know if this applies to all service people
but i think it might b/c i have to train people
this month (April) more CLS stuff (new and old)
to a few of the regular guys
and they then become nationally recognized (licensed)
in basic first aid and CPR for atleast 6 months
before they have to retake my course

now if no one in ops see a problem w/ it
i can teach some of the very (VERY) basic stuff
so that people know what to look for
and know how to handle situations

army really frowns on us just flat out teaching
what we know to non-service persons

well all in all i think this year we should be coverd to the hilt
w/ our medical staff and all the training that we have amongst ourselves

(but we can always use more)

and to those who said they would help w/ the nurse cosplay
i did shave my legs and now im cold but hell its not the first time
and it probably wont be the last
these are some of the ideas i want to use
Nurse_Green
Nurse_Black

pls post some comments i need some feedback on this
(like where to get materials)

so peace out all
im tired sleepy time cometh

You might want to check carefully that the CLR would qualify you to practice any ware.  As I recall from friends who were in as medic’s no civilian jurisdictions recognize military medic certification. (Thus friends had to go back to civ EMT school).  If the CLR covers any thing more advanced than a standard Red Cross CPR and First aid class I believe it only qualifies you to practice on military property or areas of direct military control.  Military medics are giving authority in there own jurisdictions to do things that would never be allowed by a civilian medic mainly because a soldier can not sue for malpractice

But don't worry if we kill any one I know what to do I used to work in a Mourge and still have toe tags

maybe i dont want to leave the nurse costumes to the girls Runa

but to what you said von
i got clarification from my unit for medical procedures
im under standing order
i can use only up to CLS training on civilians
anything more and then i fall under civil codes
and need the proper licensing in those areas

i also have some friend who were medics for
the Navy and the Army that are now EMTs
what they told me is that as long as there
is a risk to a persons well being i have a duty to help

now ive never had to hold a severed head
but does a severed arm count after being sewn back on
(being that the guy can fully use it)

ok to conclude this matter
the army doesnt have any problems
w/ "QUALIFIED" medics performing
CLS on civilians in need as long
as we dont complicate the matter
any worse then it is
(being the Reason for "QUALIFIED")

anything beyond CLS and the Army
wants due compensation for services
provided (this is no joke they will
force the issue if they know about it
(so we dont let them know if we have to use
more than CLS))

hopefully this resolves the issue of
military medical training
the less i know about the "RED TAPE"
the more i can do
"DONT ASK, DONT TELL"

if anybody has any questions pls ask away

Well, unless Vondan has a heart attack when he sees some of the new cosplay outfits the young girls are wearing,   :P  I suspect at worst you'll see a few blisters, assorted cuts and bruises, and maybe a bloody nose.

There may be some allergic reactions or "too much pocky" stomach aches or nasty hangovers to handle, but I think for the most part there are very few medical issues that pop up at a convention ... so we probably don't have to worry too too much. (though it is fun to ponder what oddities may pop up).

the funniest one ive had to deal w/
was when about 12 kids took it
upon themselves to get drunk

its never been more fun explaining
why kids shouldnt drink then when
you get to do it while theyre puking
their gusts out

"Thou shall bow before the porclain god
after consuming too much of the divine
drink, and thou shall beg for forgivness
lest we tell your parents why you smell
like SH!7"

i cant wait to go throught that again
it was so much fun lol

My certs will all be expired by K-con, but I've worked as a lifeguard, so I'm trained in 1st aid, cpr, O2 administration, and obviously, lifeguarding.

It seems there is much on this topic but I will say I have 2 years of Medical training as a LMT and I need to get current with Red cross but I am happy to be tapped incase of an medical emergancy.  I also have a bit of rescue training with the boy scouts and I have helped run first aid stations as well.

It may be worthwhile to investigate setting up a Red Cross first aid/CPR session for the meetings during the summer, and maybe staging some of those breathing barrier kits at key doorways.

THE MEDIC CREED

My task is to  provide to the utmost limits of my capability the best possible care to those in need of my aid and assistance.

To this end I will aid all those who are needful, paying no heed to my own desires and wants; treating friend, foe and stranger alike, placing their needs above my own.

To no man will I cause or permit harm to befall, nor will I refuse aid to any who seek it.

I will willingly share my knowledge and skills with all those who seek it.

I seek neither reward nor honor for my efforts for the satisfaction of accomplishment is sufficient.

These obligations I willingly and freely take upon myself in the tradition of those that have come before me.

…These things I do so that others may live...
