yes a big suggestion

this is something i brought up at the rant and rave

when signing up staff and volunteers
find out if they have any medical training
like CPR

after finding out this then give then
an extra sticker on their badges

this will help if a medical problem were to arise

and on that note
a seperate badge for the medics
maybe have the mascot look like
a nurse

That was one of the things I was saying about Volunteer and staff signs up this year to find out what Experience and certifications they have.

You can also bring up putting some one in charge of the aid station as early as possible.  I gather in the past one of the kid’s mom who was a nurse ran it.  This last year I don’t think there was one unless they found a nurse mom in the last week. (and no kids I was married to a nurse once and put her through school ewwwwwwwww I wont go there again)

I was an orderly for 10 years and WAS certified as a CNA and then First Aid, CPR, making cast, Setting up traction, Emergency Psych response, Morgue/Post mortem procedures, and a bunch of other OJT.  I was going to start EMT school then I had to retire from that due to a bad liver and a teeny weenie adorable stroke.

I have a friend who basically has his own Clinic and even an ambulance I don’t think we could get his company that does movie set medic work to come as a free gig (Unless he could show off his complete Civil war hospital and be in Confederate uniform) but MAYBE some material donations.

And then of course have those working the aid station dressed as anime medical peaple

I suggested the same thing two years ago.  Bring up the ideas at the October meeting, if done early enough we might get it through this year.  I am CPR and First Aid certified.  I'm also rescue diver certified but I doubt that will help much unless someone goes into the pool.  I'm planning to get both my O2 provider and AED cards by the end of the year.

Most awesome idea, Vondan.

Having tons of little medic ninjas running around the Con saving people is always a good thing.   8)

Especially with some of the weird things different age groups do.  POCKY DOES NOT GO UP YOUR NOSE!!!  :x

Or, at least, that's what I assured my cousin...

I used to be certified in CPR and First Aid but I gotta go do it again. It's been a while and they keep changing the rules on me. >.>

If we can get a bunch of people certified I think it'd put a lot of people's minds at ease. And the people wouldn't even technically have to be ON staff. Just have the badge that let's people know they know what they're doing if something happens.
Unable to come this year. Sorry guys...

if certification is the problem that crosses
peoples minds then ill just take it up w/
my little bro

hes certifible but in a good way

but really he trains boyscout how to do
cpr and first aid

and if my memory is correct
then hes certified to certify

and if that was a prob last year
then i guess i can go and try to
get certified as an RNA or EMT

but really i never quite understood
what was wrong w/ just being certified
through the army

we have more training then an RNA but
not as many year of experince as an EMT

but then i guess civilian rules make a point
about it somewhere

As for what medic said I do train scouts about first aid and a little of cpr.
I am certafied in adult cpr and aed, child cpr and aed, infant cpr, and envirmonetal first aid.....ie I can treat any minor injury and stabalize a major one atleast until the ones who get paid to do that kinda stuff get there

I had the 40+ hour First Aid/CPR training course, but my card is since expired, unfortunatly.

Anyone know of a web site that will list CPR/First Aid courses, and where they are?  I would love to renew my certification before the Con, just because it's a great certification to have.

Call your Local red cross.  When I worked at the hospital most of the training was in House but the test and cards were administered by the red cross, so they must over see every ones program.   If it gets into any thing higher than CPR/First Aid the State board of nursing probably over sees it.

I have not been certified for anything in 10 years.   When I was I did CPR on people at least once a week for up to 30 min at a time (once even riding on the bed as I did Chest Comp on a patient as they pushed it to the OR). I won some I lost some.   I could never physically do that any more so my best asset in an emergency is the ability to stay calm and organized.  One time at the last con one of the main staff came in yelling and waving arms, I did a Jedi hand wave and said in a grandfatherly voice "how many and ware do you need them, I'll take care of it" and the emergency was over.

the first virtue of any medical prof has to be
the ability to stay calm and focused in times of crisis

that right there tells people that you have experience
and that in itself can calm and reassure the people
around you

I was the staff nurse for 2004 and 2005, but was not able to attend this year. I had to care for my dying father, and being the only nurse in the family.......

I would love to have help with medical issues. Not that there are many, a few bumps and bruises and underage drinking binges. I usually bring my two medical bags and can almost do minor surgery (but that would be outside my scope of practice). I did a lot of circulating around, and was accessible by radio 24/7. A real aid station would be nice, and I will even wear kitty ears and a nurses outfit.

I will be there next year come he?? or high water.

i knew this would an issue that needed to be brought into light in force
i really like it that most everybody is thinking on the same wave length
that will help us to organize this better

but on to other topics

we need to make sure that someone is in charge of our team
somebody that knows about the con rules and guide lines thoroughly
somebody that has some medical training
somebody that can make decisions

but before we can chose somebody we need background info
and before somebody nomenates me
i would have to decline
i know i dont have enough experience

but for my background info

Im Pvt Sean Trotter US Army
I have 2 yrs basic and adv medical training
I can do basic first aid to minor surgery
Ive been training and studying first aid since i was 10
if you there is anymore info that is needed from me
then pm, message, or email me

on another thought
should all the medical staff cosplay as medical staff?
just a strange thought from a strange otaku

I had thought that who ever has the highest level of official state medical license will be in charge.  At this time that Looks like Mama Kat if she will take the position with the help of the volunteer coordinator.

This is another one of those department or positions I had assumed was in place for every con that was missed this year so I want to make sure it becomes a regular feature.

While on duty at the aid station the medical volunteers should be in medical cosplay but the con attendee’s cant assume that any one in a medical costumes on the hotel grounds is on the first aid team.  We would hate to have a real emergency and some one sends in  NekoChan in her bunny girl nurse witch costumes with bag of magic heeling pocky.

If enough kids are interested they could go enmass to a first aid class in the Portland area.

Again we need to get tighter at the meeting in october

4311 we keep bringing up redcross Certification
so i went digging

this is the Oregon Trail Chapter of redcross website

Redcross

now all we need to do is set it up so we can get
everybody to some of these classes

that way we will all be certifiable
(in a good way being that most of us are in a bad way)

I definately like this topic.  Please keep it up and definately bring this stuff up at the next meeting.  I have been discussing at times with Staze, the 2006 Ops Director, Brownie, the 2005 Ops Director, as well as a medical director trying to determine an effecient method of medical management for next year.  It sounds like you guys like a heirarchy system, which is one that we have been discussing (along with possible divisional and democratic systems).  If you want to determine who you would prefer for this position, recommend it and quite likely the 2007 Ops Director will choose them for that position as well, if they decide to use that system.  I will back up the choice as well (something which I am STILL shocked to find seems to carry some weight).

And Kat, it will be wonderful to have you back again this year.  I look forward to working with you again.  This is Jess btw, the 2005 Yojimbo-1.

well damn
i didnt know it would be this hard to get all the medics together

it sounds like we need to get everybody who is willing to work
w/ us together so that we can get to know each other better
(damn that sounds like somebodies lame attempt at picking up a date)
and so that we can get all of our thoughts together
and then put them on put them all on paper to bring before all
the head people

but anyway

the only ones who would have the power to lock this topic
would be the mods

i dont think any of what we have said can be used to close this topic

I might not be on staff this year, but I'm deffinitly going to drive my roommate nuts so I can get a ride over the pass (everything in WY is located in Cheyenne, a 45 minute drive and one mountain pass away) so I can go to the local Red Cross medics to renew my First Aid and CPR certification.

I don't want to miss out on helping people not bleed to death in painful ways on the Con floor after some grubby Viking Ninja accidently skewers them with a five foot long viola bow! ^.^

I'm not sure who brought it up, but here are my qualifications:

I have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from OHSU,
10 years experience as an RN,
CPR level C certfied
NALS (neonatal advanced life support) and PALS (pediatric advanced life support) certifications
Former CPR instructor (6 years of experience)
Former Self Aid Buddy Care Instructor for my ORANG unit
Staff Nurse for Kumoricon 2004 and 2005
Mother of 2 sons that actually made it to age 18!

I would be more than happy to organize an official aid station for Kumoricon, or assist whomever the powers that be choose. I was planning on getting recertified to teach CPR and basic first aid again, so maybe somewhere down the line we could have a one day aid training for volunteers.

I'm very sorry I was not able to atend the October 18 meeting. My Dad passed away peacefully on October 14, 2006, without pain and all of his daughters with him. Unfortunately my car was totalled before his death while I was on my way to care for him during the last week of his life. October has not been a good month.  :(  Here's hoping the rest of the year goes better!

I know some one who is a EMT, PA and part owner of an on set medic team that works on movies sets for months at a time or short term events like concerts.  He has enough stuff for a clinic and an ambulance they keep parked at a college ware he is a nursing and EMT teacher.  But I know they would not do it for free (Allthough he would do it in costume) if and when the con is big enough to need the conventiuon center a group like that could be looked into.  I will be hitting him up for supplies                         .

I'm glad to see this thread. I've pretty much done everything (except coding for insurance billing) that someone can do in a medical clinic without being clinically trained, from spanish translation to transcription to reception-level triage to case management. also cpr, first aid, blood borne pathogen, and hiv prevention trainings. pretty busy at con (running creation station) but hoping to help the brainstorming ahead of time. and if the powers that be choose to have multiple outposts for first aid supplies and whatnot i would be into the creation station being among those outposts.

Hey Sean,

Last time I talked to Brownie it was still being discussed.  She is rather busy with midterms right now so just a little patience.  What with being in Washington next year, lots to consider about how to go about this.

Since the con is going to be in Washington this year, I am willing to get my RN license in Washington reactivated. That would protect myself and the con from a medical-legal stand point. It's not a huge deal to me, I may need to get it anyway since I am applying to a Master's in Nursing program at UW next fall.  :)

As I wrote before, I am more than happy to help in any capacity. I can help organize, help with space planning, appropriate supplies, write policies, train medic volunteers, whatever. If someone else is more emotionally invested and wants to run the show, I'm fine with that too. I just want to see everyone have a great time and be safe.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

I am interested in joining as a volunteer. I am a rescue swimmer and an EMT. Out of curiousity, who else is qualified as medical personnel, and how this part of the convention is generally handled. For example, is there a "first aid station", or medical area? Are any supplies made available? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If the patch you use as your avatar is true about you
then its nice to see some more military training
and sears training to boot

but to the question of who has actual medical exp
just start read from the beginning of the topic
b/c i know i posted some of mine
and mamakat posted some too
along w/ vondan

to be honest i think everybody who has posted
has some kind of medical training in one form or another

if you have anymore ?s then pm one of us
or bring it up at the next meeting
one of us should be there

i know i cant be there b/c i have to go play army
that weekend but you can still message me if you have some ?s

and as a side note as i think about this hrs after i posted

i found out from my unit that my training is nationally certified
meaning that i dont need to do any of the civilian licenses

so now my info stands as is

I have 3 yrs basic and adv medical training
I can do basic first aid to minor surgery
Ive been training and studying first aid since i was 10
medic for kcon 2006
ill be doing more CLS training in July07

peace all

Kumoricon Medic,
Although I appreciate the reply, the response only answers 1 question. I would like to know how the medical situation has been handled in the previous conventions. What supplies are available? Is this coordinated with local Emergency Medical Services (EMS)?
And as far as your question to me: I am nationally certified as an EMT-B. I have a little over a year of field experience with Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Paramedics, and am currently one of the primary EMT's for Naval Air Station Jacksonville. Additionally, I have been a Rescue Swimmer for 4 years and have practiced first aid (below EMT level training) for that time. This also includes training lay personnel in basic first aid / CPR.
I do apologize that I cannot make any meetings until June at the earliest. I would like to help as much as possible to make this a safe and enjoyable convention, as I have many friends who are going to attend. :D
Again, thank you for assistance, and if there is a coordinator whom I should shoot an email to, please let me know!

right now our medical situation can best be described as bleak

were still working on where we fall under
most likely this will be w/ operations
but as far as i know on one can be certain
right now the head of the medics would likely be mamakat
but im not for sure on that either

as for supplies we all have our own that we bring
thats what me and andrew did for kcon06
him w/ actual supplies me w/ improvised

but for actual medical emergecies we stabilize
and if its over our colletive heads then we
bring in the state licensed professionals
we only deal w/ the minor and immediate
for the major(as rare as they may be) we defer
to real guys that get payed to do this work

now if it sounds like im just blowing smoke
thats b/c none of our policies are set in stone
i dont think we can afford to do that
no matter what the situation may be
you can never be 100% on anything
all we can do is try and do our best

all i can really say is grab some books
and learn a little improvised medicine
its helped me when supplies were nowhere
to be found but all i had was tape and t-shirts

if you can think of something you might need for
a minor or immediate emergency write it down

between all of us we might be able to handle alot
of different situations but by no means can we ever
handle all of them

now i dont know if i have answered your questions
but think i might have been able to shed some light
on the subject

and as always if you have any ?s then pls ask
i try and check the forums daily so i should see it
but even if i dont this topic has become a sticky
on the board so people should see what has been posted

hopefully well be able to meet as a group so we can get
to know one another in the near future

but anyways you all have a nice night

ps i noticed you said Jacksonville
would that be Jacksonville FL

peace all

Good information to know!

I'm glad to have an idea of what we have right now - And what we should look for as far as supplies and possible training for volunteers. The info will hopefully spawn some questions for the next meeting.
As I stated, I am in Jacksonville. And yes, in FL... Good call. I will be in the area in the middle to late May. Astoria, to be exact. I have sent a volunteer request to the personnel@kumoricon.com email address. I have not had any replies, but I am sure they are VERY busy. Anywho, I do have a few ideas that may be points to bring up at meetings. I don't know how formal the meetings are but nevertheless...
-Organize all medical volunteers (phone lists, emails, etc)
-Assign other volunteers if neccesary (Again, I don't know if there was a major need for medical people, this is my first :-P)
-Procure realistic supplies (bandaids, alchohol pads, gauze) - preferably free ones
-Ask people (like yourself!) who were at previous K-con's about what supplies would be useful / What injuries were common
-For medical volunteers: basic first aid / CPR training
-See what the Hilton will supply - wheelchairs, tents, convention stuff..

I seriously hope I am not stepping on anyone's toes, but to describe the situation as "bleak" with 2000+ people expected is spooky. Just by looking at the forums it seems there is plenty of talent to go around, all that's needed is some structure! Let me know what you guys think. My email should be available through this forum, but if not : CYPHERNAUT@LYCOS.COM .

When people register, is there a section that lets people check a box that includes items such as: have Redcross certification in CPR, First Aid, AED; have RN; have EMT; have MD  ?   This would allow us to at least know who at the convention may know some medical stuff...

Just from experience, I recall walking into SakuraCon OPs and some kind had a _messy_ nosebleed. People were debating about what to do for him. Since I'd just finished my Red Cross recertification I knew what to do for the kid, and was also able to calm down the spastic mom who was rather upset about the kid's nosebleed (the boy was calm...mom wasn't.) If we knew all attendees who had some medical knowledge (even if they aren't doing special volunteer work...but if they happen to be within shouting range when something happens, that would be very helpful)

Vallie says that registration does not have any of that information.

Volunteers have all been asked for what training and abilities they have to help decide what they can help with. However we still aren't specifically asking them about medical training. Maybe next year.

I had this vision of there being an accident and some one grabbing some one in an anime nurse outfit (wasn't Neko going to be an anime bunnygirl nurse with a bag of magic healing pocky) and they expect the "nurse" to help.  And then after she tries to revive the person with magic healing pocky and they die the con is sued and she is in therapy for 10 years for PTSD

The situation from what I've learned is bleak....the con doesn't really want people being in charge too much of first aid because it then leaves the responsibility to the con for this. Basically most of this is running off of the good citizen thing where if someone is hurt or in trouble then the citizen comes to help until the real guys show up with their van of tricks.

The coordination is that the staff have been asked if they have first aid and cpr ect ect bye Medic!!! but other than mamakat saying she would take on RN there hasn't been anything set up. From the looks of it most of the first aid/ cpr certified people are on the Yojimbo staff.

I don't know if that is any more help than medic but I figured I would try to help.

Hi There,

I guess I will put in my two cents. I was the Staff Nurse for Kumoricon 2004 & 2005. I am an RN licensed in Oregon, and soon to be in Washington as well. I brought my own first aid supplies with me to both conventions, one large kit and one small kit. I was unable to attend Kumoricon 2006 due to a death in the family.

Regarding the question about a first aid station, I can only speak to the two conventions I attended. I was it, and I was available via radio or my cell phone (at 2 a.m.)! We had a broken toe nail the first year, and the second year a couple of blisters, a few questions, and one stupid drunk kid.

I am waiting on my Washington RN license, then I can make medical decisions within my scope of practice while at the Con. I don't know about anyone else, so I will call a friend of mine who is an attorney that specialises in medical malpractice issues and ask him about it. I have not been to any of the meetings, yet.

I do sincerely hope that we would not need to do surgery while at the Con! I sure hope we are not expecting WWIII! LOLERSKATES

Great stuff guys!
I'm glad that this particular thread is active. It's good to know what's going on. Thank you MamaKat for looking up some legal stuff. I know that I can operate "freelance" so long as I don't do ANYTHING outside my own scope of practice - kinda on a "good samaritan with strings" thing. With you being an RN. I can operate under your license. I'll just call you my medical director(ess). :-) .
There was a comment posted above about how the 'Con would like to avoid dealing with first-aid type of stuff. I have done quite a few major events (Football games, concerts, etc) and I do have a little bad news.

The 'Con ultimately IS responsible for a certain amount of assitance.

I know this probably should be addressed elsewhere, but it is important. I think a full operating room would be ridiculous, but in an event that people are profiting (non-charity) and have a large amount of people expecting to attend, you must have something. Each state differs. I don't want to bust any chops, and it's really awesome nothing major has happened (knock on wood). But, if something major DID happen, it would look REALLY bad for the people running the show, if there was not reasonable help.

However, it does seem it's been covered for awhile now, I just can't help the public health and safety guy inside me from coming out :-).

So, thank you Mamakat for the info, I do ask any other people from previous 'Cons to toss out any info on common injuries - if any - that you've seen in previous years. Thanks again!

I won't be functioning as any sort of medical help for the con but I do have my First Aid and safety training from being an Eagle Scout.

However the reason I'm popping up is that I'm maintaining the convenetion maps right now and I wanted to ask where you guys would be. If you get a first Aid station from the convention let me know so I can put it on the map.

Here are my maps of the conspace.
http://pockyclub.elite-otaku.net/maps.html
This information is kept as up to date as possible.

I know that the Ops suite will be on the third floor. Other convention spaces are as of yet unknown.

Another thing to consider... this from personal experience at a previous convention... I somehow managed to cut myself and after going to the hotel front desk, the concierge pointed me to the on-staff hotel nurse, who took me to the staff area of the hotel where they had a mini nurse's station packed with all kinds of medical necessities. Of course, all I needed was a bandaid and some antibiotic, but it was nice to see that if I'd managed to damage myself more thoroughly, that the hotel had sufficient supplies to handle most first aid situations. The nurse told me that many hotels in the area have staff nurses.  Someone should check on whether this hotel has a staff nurse and what kind of supplies the nurse has just in case our first aid kits are missing something we need.

The main thing a medical staff at the con would be for is to serve really minor needs that DO NOT involve dispensing any kind of med over or under counter and to be there to stabilize the situation (either medically or to clear the area) and wait the 3-4 minutes for an ambulance.  Also something like CPR is covered under the Good Samaritan rule as long as you have a card recognized by that state.  Any thing more complex than CPR and you would have to be licensed by that state.  Something like an event medical staff like my friend is they are ready to work in any state having gove over the peper work and have nurses and medics who operate under the license of the Dr who owns the company

the point you brought up is a very important one von
and thats why i startd diving throught the regs for the army

once we go through our CLS and medic courses we become
nationally recognized (licensed)

meaning we can perform medical procetures "?anywhere?"
that the army serves until the proper medical staff arrive

dont quote me b/c between now and then the reg might
change

if it does ill be notified of the change (however minor or major)
and in turn notify ops

but i dont see any changes in the immediate future
so i should be coverd for now

now i dont know if this applies to all service people
but i think it might b/c i have to train people
this month (April) more CLS stuff (new and old)
to a few of the regular guys
and they then become nationally recognized (licensed)
in basic first aid and CPR for atleast 6 months
before they have to retake my course

now if no one in ops see a problem w/ it
i can teach some of the very (VERY) basic stuff
so that people know what to look for
and know how to handle situations

army really frowns on us just flat out teaching
what we know to non-service persons

well all in all i think this year we should be coverd to the hilt
w/ our medical staff and all the training that we have amongst ourselves

(but we can always use more)

and to those who said they would help w/ the nurse cosplay
i did shave my legs and now im cold but hell its not the first time
and it probably wont be the last
these are some of the ideas i want to use
Nurse_Green
Nurse_Black

pls post some comments i need some feedback on this
(like where to get materials)

so peace out all

You might want to check carefully that the CLR would qualify you to practice any ware.  As I recall from friends who were in as medic’s no civilian jurisdictions recognize military medic certification. (Thus friends had to go back to civ EMT school).  If the CLR covers any thing more advanced than a standard Red Cross CPR and First aid class I believe it only qualifies you to practice on military property or areas of direct military control.  Military medics are giving authority in there own jurisdictions to do things that would never be allowed by a civilian medic mainly because a soldier can not sue for malpractice

But don't worry if we kill any one I know what to do I used to work in a Mourge and still have toe tags

maybe i dont want to leave the nurse costumes to the girls Runa

but to what you said von
i got clarification from my unit for medical procedures
im under standing order
i can use only up to CLS training on civilians
anything more and then i fall under civil codes
and need the proper licensing in those areas

i also have some friend who were medics for
the Navy and the Army that are now EMTs
what they told me is that as long as there
is a risk to a persons well being i have a duty to help

now ive never had to hold a severed head
but does a severed arm count after being sewn back on
(being that the guy can fully use it)

ok to conclude this matter
the army doesnt have any problems
w/ "QUALIFIED" medics performing
CLS on civilians in need as long
as we dont complicate the matter
any worse then it is
(being the Reason for "QUALIFIED")

anything beyond CLS and the Army
wants due compensation for services
provided (this is no joke they will
force the issue if they know about it
(so we dont let them know if we have to use
more than CLS))

hopefully this resolves the issue of
military medical training
the less i know about the "RED TAPE"
the more i can do
"DONT ASK, DONT TELL"

if anybody has any questions pls ask away

Well, unless Vondan has a heart attack when he sees some of the new cosplay outfits the young girls are wearing,   :P  I suspect at worst you'll see a few blisters, assorted cuts and bruises, and maybe a bloody nose.

There may be some allergic reactions or "too much pocky" stomach aches or nasty hangovers to handle, but I think for the most part there are very few medical issues that pop up at a convention ... so we probably don't have to worry too too much. (though it is fun to ponder what oddities may pop up).

upon themselves to get drunk

its never been more fun explaining
why kids shouldnt drink then when
you get to do it while theyre puking
their gusts out

"Thou shall bow before the porclain god
after consuming too much of the divine
drink, and thou shall beg for forgivness
lest we tell your parents why you smell
like SH!7"

i cant wait to go throught that again
it was so much fun lol

Well, unless Vondan has a heart attack when he sees some of the new cosplay outfits the young girls are wearing,

Hey now I think I was very well behaved at the last con, even though as we unloaded the truck at 8am my friend said “Dude if you were a few years younger this place would be a smorgasbord”

And I have new BP meds that help my heat.

I don’t want the young girls (but I do want to make a time machine I bring my 16 YO self to the con) I want there aunts,  I want girl my age who have kept there imagination.  Hey your may age you should bring your sisters and friends from the costume guild

My certs will all be expired by K-con, but I've worked as a lifeguard, so I'm trained in 1st aid, cpr, O2 administration, and obviously, lifeguarding.

It seems there is much on this topic but I will say I have 2 years of Medical training as a LMT and I need to get current with Red cross but I am happy to be tapped incase of an medical emergancy.  I also have a bit of rescue training with the boy scouts and I have helped run first aid stations as well.

By K-con '08 I might be certified in CPR... I'm not on the general-whatsit-council or whatever, but I could help out if need be...

It may be worthwhile to investigate setting up a Red Cross first aid/CPR session for the meetings during the summer, and maybe staging some of those breathing barrier kits at key doorways.

I bet the doubletree would have some somewhere.  Most work places are encouraged to have things like that.

THE MEDIC CREED

My task is to  provide to the utmost limits of my capability the best possible care to those in need of my aid and assistance.

To this end I will aid all those who are needful, paying no heed to my own desires and wants; treating friend, foe and stranger alike, placing their needs above my own.

To no man will I cause or permit harm to befall, nor will I refuse aid to any who seek it.

I will willingly share my knowledge and skills with all those who seek it.

I seek neither reward nor honor for my efforts for the satisfaction of accomplishment is sufficient.

These obligations I willingly and freely take upon myself in the tradition of those that have come before me.

…These things I do so that others may live...
