Portland Tribune Article

Check out the article in the Portland Tribune. They were basically kind, though the title was kind of silly.
You'll be loved, you'll be loved, like you never have known. When memories of me will seem more like bad dreams. Just a series of blurs, like I never occurred. Someday, you will be loved.

I say we burn their place of business to the ground. That article makes me mad. The guy took a picture of my friend and I don't see it. He even said that he was going to use her photo. It is unforgivable, they ALL deserve to be punished!!!

Oh, I guess the stuff that was written was neat though. ^_^

"Anime is, simply put, Japanese animation. The basic anime template is fairly familiar: Childlike characters with huge, sparkly eyes and spiky hair get swept up in a save-the-universe fantasy adventure."

I think that description only covers the later part of the DragonBall series... o.o

Cosplay puts on the drama

Uhde leads me into a carpeted ballroom, where the cosplay competition is in full swing. In front of an audience of more than 500 people, two young men are acting out a skit on stage. They hold gigantic swords – they’re warriors from a video game – but they decide not to do battle. The audience laughs and cheers.

When a woman with long blond hair and black samurai armor appears on stage, the crowd erupts in applause. I don’t know why.

yes our skit!! lol yes we cannot  "battle" with those big swords cause they would kill some one
Oh and yes i was a samurai with a gigantic sword i mean come on who wouldnt cheer for that  ( i am the chibiroth b****)lol

Man, this guy didn't know ANYTHING when he wrote this.  He didn't even know what DDR was.  You'd think it's been around long enough for people to know what it is at the very least.

(My imagined situation)
"What's that?"
"It's DDR."
"What?"
"You know, the Dancing Game."
"No clue."
"The game that makes you tired just watching other people do it."
"Oh yeah."

Still, very entertaining to read.

The Oregonian covered us better back in '04. They had a very nice picture of Sean with GitS 2 on his TV behind him. They also put their piece in the paper BEFORE the convention and not afterwards.

this reporter sounds like one of the drunk wedding people we had to deal with, but at least he doesn't sound like one of the drunk BASEBALL DADS!

Maybe if some girls gave the reporter a hug and screamed YAOI, the article would have been a bit more complementary towards everyone at the convention.

With mundane journalists I think that would have hurt us and they would have written something like "Wannabe Japanese preteens were seen randomly assaulting people around the convention and screaming things at them. Two such girls grabbed me at one point and shouted Japanese obscenities at me. There is word of some of the hotel staff sueing the convention due to this activity."

I'd just gotten my hair cut from it being below my waist, so I had short hair.  It was funny trying to get in the buns.
Eventually, we just made me some mouse ears out of the top layer of my hair and I went that way.
It was bad, but I loved it.

regardless the paper could have sent someone with atleast SOME knowledge of anime or video games to do the article.  Sending this guy made us look bad in alot of ways.  Its truely sad to see that the paper is more about slander and less about covering whats really going on.

lol, what I love is that if I tried to write an article about football or something, it would basically sound just like this article.

"These self-titled 'fans' gather, occasionally adorned in face paint or coordinated colors, to cheer for their favorite players.  They fill the stands, watching a group of uniformed men run back and forth accross a field, jumping on each other."

I don't think there is a word for non-critic. Maybe two though. Unbiased professional?

The article wasn't very professional though. Unless that column is supposed to have the writer's personal opinion on something ooze in from all directions. Maybe Anne just thought that he/she was above things like this convention and this was an insult to an elite reporter such as himself...

I still wanna know who from the hotel wasn't amused by what was going on. From what I saw, alot of the employees had smiles on their faces. Unless that is in their job description. Were their eyes sad, or filled with such rage that anyone who was in cosplay could not recognize the fury that burned in their hearts?

Anyway, yay for being a cynic!

Okay, I'm done on the lite bashing of this article. The ignorance is kind of cute, so no reason to be upset. ^_^

"Anne" was a she.  I talked to her for a moment when she was in the creation station with the con chair.   She was polite but this was all new to her and she had no frames of reference.  Half of what Meg was saying to her was explanations of terms and activities.

Maybe it’s my fault she did not take it serious.  They came by my area and Meg said, “This is the new repair station ware con goers can get their costumes and props repaired”.  And I said “Yeah as long as I had to bring all this crap here to teach a class I figured I could fix any junk that get broke.”

Meg rushed her away before I could ask about her glasses

... Maybe Anne just thought that he/she was above things like this convention and this was an insult to an elite reporter such as himself...

Yeah but, after the convention Anne could have easily just googled some of this stuff for a couple of hours and then written her article. Instead the whole thing looks silly.

lol, what I love is that if I tried to write an article about football or something, it would basically sound just like this article.

"These self-titled 'fans' gather, occasionally adorned in face paint or coordinated colors, to cheer for their favorite players.  They fill the stands, watching a group of uniformed men run back and forth accross a field, jumping on each other."
You have no idea how hard that made me laugh. :''D
My cousin used to be a football player before he decided to be a lawyer, so I've had experience at a game or two...

But anyway, coming from someone who took a journalism class last year, it's really hard to write something about what you like because it'll definitely be biased.  This article, unless an opinion column, is extremely unprofessional.
Either that, or s/he had major writers' block considering 1: how short it is and 2: how many negative words they used to describe us.  >>

I hope you can at least understand why that generalization was made.  My initial reaction upon arrival at the con was OMG! Everyone here's ten years younger than me! WTF?

In defense of Anne (a very nice woman) -

She has to sell this stuff to an audience that knows even less than she does. And she meant no disrespect with the term "geek". Lots of us anime fans (myself included) refer to ourselves that way with pride. I guess it's kind of like the word "queer". *Some* people who are in same sex relationships can use the word, and own it as a form of empowerment. But it's just plain wrong to use it if you are straight. (Unless you are saying something is odd.)

As for bias - bias is what you receive when someone is trying to influence your decision one way or another for personal gain. Like the a phamacuetical company giving data that there product is safe. They would benefit from that information, and therefore are biased. I doubt Anne had anything to gain from calling us geeks, or not knowing much about anime. Quite the contrary. She was able to present a niche culture to a larger audience by presenting what she actually SAW without use of jargon or too much inside info. As much as we hate to admit it, most people in the big world don't know anything about anime. I learned that just talking to her.

I hope this is helpful and informative, and I don't want to slight or guilt any of you. Just offering a different perspective.
You'll be loved, you'll be loved, like you never have known. When memories of me will seem more like bad dreams. Just a series of blurs, like I never occurred. Someday, you will be loved.

It's one thing to self-proclaim you're a geek and your friends say you're geeky, but when some chick who doesn't even know you throws the term around in such a way it's super insulting.

I really don't think there's any way around that fact that the article was more insulting than informational and if you have to make fun of all of us and pass judgement to entertain some lame@$$ audience then I'd rather you didn't write about us at all.'

The Oregonian article a few years ago was really great, as was the Columbian's article on anime cons in genearl.
