Donate your old manga to Kumoricon
« on: February 28, 2007, 10:00:52 pm »
This year we are trying to bring something new to Kumoricon - a manga library, where you can come in and take a look at some new manga, or read an old favorite.

In an effort to build the library from scratch, we are looking for donations of old manga. So... if you have some books you tried, but couldn't get into, or some books you just don't read anymore, and they are in fairly good shape, how about donating them to the convention?  :D We are starting from nothing, so anything you can give us helps bring the library to life.

Donations can be brought to any general meeting.  If you are interested in donating, but can't make it to the general meeting, PM or e-mail me, and we can work something out.

you would have a better chance if you had it more as a manga reading room and no real checking out and a badge system to lend books, and instead of donating the books, rather lend them because for many of us (myself included) those manga were bought with hard earned cash and not so easily thrown away at 10 or more bucks a pop....

I might consider donating my Ranma 1/2 collection to the library.  I have all 36 issues.

The library will be a place that you can go and sit and read manga that will be stored there - there will be no checking books out, and bags will have to be checked at the door.

We understand the manga is expensive... if it wasn't, we would be able to go out and buy all the books we need, instead of asking for donations  :)  All we are asking for is books you don't want anymore... maybe you grew tired of the series, or maybe someone gave you an extra copy - if it's in good condition, and you're not interested in it anymore, why not share it with others?

As for just having people lending us their books... How do you keep straight who lent what?  What if you're particular about how your books are handled? (personally, I'd skin somebody if they bent the pages or spine of one of my books, which is why I'm choosy about who borrows them  :x ) When do you get your books back?  What happens if it goes missing?  The logistics would be a nightmare.

I have a bunch of manga I don't want anymore and that I don't think anyone will buy. If I bring them to the Uwajimaya Fest. can I make my donation there?

Are there any sort of restrictions as to what can be there?  (Like, any hentai or other stuff that might not be suitable for children).  I'd imagine no, but I thoug it would be good to officially get it out of the way for anyone who would be curious.

Right now, there is no restriction on what we will accept.  Anything that is not suitable for general reading (i.e. hentai, yaoi, anything extremely graphic) will be kept separate from the general books.  We will have to decide policy on how those will be available - whether we set them out after curfew, or if they require ID like some of the other adult programming.

I've got some more or less new manga that I no longer wish to hold onto, so I'd be happy to donate them.  Just need to arrange a time/place to hand them over to the proper authority.

If you are going to Uwajimaya's Sakura festival, you can drop them off there, or at any of the general meetings.  If those don't work for you, PM me and we can arrange something else.

Thanks :)

Vondan I think if you did it would be a good idea, remember Kumoricon supports anime fans of all ages and fanbase.  There are people who just know "scout guides" and that is ok. It really is

We have received all but this year's Shonen Jump, so if you have some from this year that would be great.  And we are accepting Newtype as well... every little bit helps.

As of the last meeting, we had a little over 110+ manga, and 4 years worth of Shonen Jump.  It's a good start, but we are always looking for more books... so please, if you have anything you're willing to part with, think about donating it to the con for others to enjoy  ;D

Hello --

Just jumping in here to say that Dark Horse Comics will be donating a large chunk of manga to the library to offset the price of their vendor room booths. Not sure how much it all equals out to, as I have not "seen the goods" yet, but will be picking them up before our final pre-con meeting on August 25. Anyway, it should be over $300 worth of manga.

Holy cow, I gotta check my vendor map and see how many booths they got!
I hope they have some cool merch there this year, last year they had two guys to talk to who would give you keychains and nothing else. They'd say "Hi, we're from Dark Horse." and when you nodded... keychain.

Antares, you're awesome!!  Thanks for all your help  ;D  Let me know if you need help picking it up from them.

We got a few more donations at the last general meeting (thanks all :)).  If you have something you want to donate, the general meetings are a great place to drop them off, and we have 2 meetings left before con.  If you can't make them, but still want to donate, then please PM me and we can make arrangements.

Yay I know -- but they almost weren't there at all! And actually early on they were giving away $9 mangas for free (ask Jazz, I think she donated one to the charity auction to go with her wall scroll!) Obviously they ran out of those. Thus the keychains. They reserved 2 booths this year so I am assuming they will have much more happening. They also are going to run a panel or two (I am checking with Brenda to see if she received their forms...) I<3 DH
