Anime clubs
« on: July 01, 2006, 10:46:26 am »
I (Being thirteen years old and sound of mind.) am trying to star an anime club at my school. Unfortunately, I have no idea what I'm doing. A lot of my friends are into anime/manga, but I want other people to be in the club as well. I want it to be a place where people can find someone who is into the stuff that they like, without having to look all over the place. But, since it is a middle school, we would have to find an adult to supervise us.   >.> That could prove a problem, so I'm thinking about a permission slip, or something that says the kid can be subjected to the T or OT manga/anime I might bring. (I gotta show them Cowboy Bebop and Trigun!) I know that a lot of the schools TVs have a DVD player, so we might be able to use one of those...

Antway, If you have any suggestions or tips, tell me.

i use to be apart of one when i was in highschool, then i eventually took it over when i was a senior, basically it was always run by seniors cause they already knew teachers that would let us use their room for the year, every wednsday, and most rooms already have a big tv/dvd/computer hook up, so we just put xvid on the pc and we watched all new anime that came out, or full series like please save my earth, rayearth magic knights, like switch it up between movies, series, or just show like 2 episodes and see if people want to watch the rest, but we never watched anything that had already been showed on cartoon network , cause like whats the point of showing anime that people can go see at home.
ohh and it wasnt called just anime club, our school wouldnt let that fly we had to have some sort of educational experience to it, so it was called the japanese culture and anime club(and then we called it genshiken..jk^^), and at the start of the meeting just say some fact about japan that most people aready knew, and we did have manga days and days people would bring in japanese food~!it was awsome. iono hope this helps somewhat, and goodluck~!

Ask a school counselor. Seriously, that's why they get paid the big bucks, to help students do things that are actually good things to do. A counselor is going to know all the rules you will need to follow in regards to an anime club.

Find friends, who are willing to work at making a good club. fickle friends who only show up for the party, aren't worth much in having for the club. Meaning, don't let them control your club.

Good luck.

I was going to name my club the Genshiken! My brother told me that it might not be a good idea because there is so many mentions of porn in it... We are but a (Non-existant, as of yet) anime club. And calling it japanease culture might be cool. My schools pretty neat, bu the adult chaparone thing makes it hard... they'll try and take it over, as I see it. >.>

Hmmm... I'm not sure about middle school.... but at my High School we got people to our anime club by making a trailer for the news every morning. The schools in my district have a tv in each class donated by channel one, where schools also show their announcements.

U can also use gimmicks to get people there... like have a Christmas of some Holdiday party with food.... lol... when we get pizza alot more people show... and then some actually stick around. You might not beable to do this, but our anime club has planned events to, like we go to Uwajimaya (a Japanese store) in beaverton every once in a while.

I had to wait until College to get into an anime club.  Unfortunatly I grew up in Toppenish, WA... where there was a group of 3 of us that liked anime... and out of those 3... 1 was more into FFA and the other just joined FFA to escape out of some classes.
I was happy to go on to the WSU Anime club.  And met many people there that helped shape my taste in anime.
However I really wish there was an anime club in my home town... it woudl help being 3 1/2 hours from that club.

In the middle school I went to, they hated us. :] It's true. We had Phsycic Academy Manga at school and they said we were looking at Pornography. I was the only one in trouble though, because I lashed out and told them that if I wanted to look at pornogrpahy, I could easily bypass the internet blocks and do so.

Yeah... In-school suspensions no fun...

I would reccomend going to an art teacher (I dunno if you ever have one with all these budget cuts...). If not, wait until highschool. You'll have a much large audience to apeal to... But people may call you names. ^^; Just my experience being an anime fan in todays highschool setting. The Pizza idea sounds like a good idea. Make sure people aren't just going up to you and being like "Hey, anime cool dudes... Yeah, e're gonna take some of this. See you later!" (Heheh... People at my school did that to the Bible study group all the time. Funniest stuff ever because they would never stop us. xD)

And don't even begin thinking that you'll be watching any kind of Ot, or T anime in middleschool, with your club being school sponsored. I had a really awesome teacher and she let us watch My Neighbor Totoro during our study hall. Most teachers have to watch the program first and then decide if it's appropriate. (My English teacher this past year had to fast forward a poetry movie because of complaints from parents... It was about Candlewax if you get my drift...)

Hm... I'm not very encouraging... xD Good luck though.

We can make a permission slip to let us watch OT or T stuff. as long as we don't start watching things rated M, I think we'll be fine.

I'm not worried about being called names. Being the only openly bi person in my school, I'm kind of decencitized.

My friend and I started an anime club at our school this year.  <3
We're all coming up to Kcon this year.  8D  Well, five of us are. One more member is coming on his own because "He doesn't like the way we run things."
He just not going to be staying in our suite, huh huh.  :<

Anyways, just be dedicated to getting it going. Run an annoucement in your school's annoucements (if you have them), tell any people you know that like anime about it repeatedly, and make sure you do fun stuff.
For about half the year, we went over to one of our member's houses and watched FMA as our "viewing". We never did get beyond that.  xD  We had some problems with the member and had to postpone our viewings.
They'll be continuing next year though.

Also take the club to Kcon of course! And be super friendly with everyone. All clubs like that kind of thing.  <3

And good for you for not caring what others say about it. We get hassled so much about it at school   :c  Like, when getting off the bus for our viewings, we'd always get calls from the back of the bus about going to watch Pokemon and Sailor Moon.
The next day, those same people were very sorry to see me coming at them and telling them off for it. Ha ha.

I just don't put up with that kind of thing.  o____o

My friends that like anime already know what is happaning and are on the bandwagon, I'm happy to say. I don't want it just to be us though, the school announcements seem like a good idea. I'll see if a student can get stuff in there.

I don't know how it works on a middle school level, but here's how it goes with college.

You need to work on a charter.  Get a number of students together (my college says 14 students) to sign a form saying that they support the group idea.  you also need to have an advisor, which needs to be a member of the school staff; teachers, secretaries, janitors, anyone employed by the school.  There is also a place to describe what your objective is.  Once this form is filled out, take it to a student government meeting and present your desire to start the club.

This is how it works at my college.
My cosplay plans for 2022 (thus far): Vanir from Konosuba
My son's plans this year (thus far): Penguin Chiyo-chan from Azumanga Daioh

we have an anime club at our high school, and it's pretty successful. although, it almost didn't start last year because we couldn't find an advisor. luckily, our hardworking president asked everyone he could and eventually one of the math teachers volunteered. we use his classroom (on sunny days we go outside), but most of the time he's never there.
held every tuesday after school, we do lots of things. sometimes we watch anime (trigun, fruits basket, miyazaki flicks), anime improv, and lots of made up games. we haven't recieved any critisizm (yet?). but i think it's a wonderful way to meet new people with the same love! :3
you should approach whoever's in charge of school activities/clubs, present them the basic idea of the club and what it's about, and find an advisor. also tell the advisor the basic idea ... maybe embellish it a bit, lol. i wish you the best of luck! ganbatte!

[here's a picture of our club...well, the regulars anyway. i'm the one on the far left, short black hair. >D my position: public relations/mascot. which involves cosplaying on certain days. XD]

we had one that was kind of a gaming and anime club... just make sure that there's enough variety for everyone... our club lost members (including myself) because it transitioned into one specific thing, rather than a variety of things...

Actually, my club is facing a similar situation that oishiidesuyo had.  Our advisor will be leaving her duties this October; we've been drilling every department for a replacement.  Apparantly, one of our first advisors is (also like oishiidesuyo) in the math department, and said he was interested in coming back; the problem is that nobody in the club can remember what his name is.
