Anyone else up for tabletop roleplay?
« on: June 22, 2004, 01:37:45 am »
Would there be anyone willing to DM/ST any Tabletop roleplay, such as BESM d20 system? It could really be quite an entertaining addition, but I'm not the person for the job...

I've heard of it done at other cons, I'd just like to know if there's any possibility of tabletop or LARP at KumoriCon. It's something I'd like to participate in.

At my first con(Sakuracon 03) I saw the same group of guys sitting in the gaming room at all hours of the day-all of the days! What the heck, get up, go see some people, Gasp, talk to a girl!
And now I'm a catgirl?

The voice of the one I love
was all I could hear as I lay broken in the darkness
My own voice faltered
My wings no longer had the strength to fly

There will indeed be tabletop RPGing going on this year, just like last, though likely more of it.

Nyco27 is the one in charge of it, but she's very rarely on the forums.  Since I see her on a weekly basis (she currently GMs my gaming group on Sundays), I do know she will be running L5R again this year, and I will be either running Feng Shui or BESM D20 (I'll be prepared to run either, and will likely just pick which based on requests).  And I believe that several other smaller groups slipped in and formed up in their own pickup games as well.  I don't think RP will be going on non-stop during the con, but I do think there will be sessions each day, multiple ones even, if I'm correct.

Also attending will be such nifty games as Ninja Burger and Munchkin Fu, for those who want to game but don't want to RP.

I don't think we're going to be putting together a true LARP this year though.  Just not enough time to iron out the semantics we would need to make it work.

I think this got mentioned in another post somewhere, but it probably does belong much better here.

Besides, Big Guy... some of us are scared by girls!

Way back in my D&D days (I don't want to admit how long ago that was, ilusion of youth and all!) when we weren't playing D&D or Starfleet Battles, we played a game calledm "Food Fight."  Does anyone still play that or know if it.

I remember that it was a riot!  There was different damage for different kinds of food. (that's about all I remember!)

Ah, good. BESM d20 would be good experience for me, because I have all the necessary stuff, I'm just not quite sure how it meshes with the D&D stuff.

I've never heard of Feng Shui before, what's it like?

I'll run one if you so desire. I am familiar with the D20 Modern and original versions od AD&D 3.5v as well as GURPS. I actually have a Tenchi Muyo GURPS book if one were so inclined.

If you're still interested e-mail me, I have no problem assisting or being a DM, or just playing for that matter. ^_^

Rebecca:  Straight D20 could convert almost directly to BESM D20 without difficulty, though going back would seem to be a bit of a bother.  The only major difference (other than classes - they even have the "D&D" races in the BESM D20 book) is that they have the attribuites and defects in BESM, which you won't see on your average D&D character.  As for Feng Shui, it's based primarily on Hong Kong action flicks, or any action movie for that manner.  It's a remarkably easy system to learn, and it's a riot to play.  You ever see the movie "Big Trouble in Little China?"  Basically think of that as an RPG session instead of a movie.  That's Feng Shui.

Tylo:  In terms of additional GMs, I think we're just winging it at that point.  If Nyco actually checks the forums for once (heh heh), she'll probably say similar, which is basically bring your stuff if you like, and if you end up wanting to GM, go for it.  If it's done the way it was last year, it'll just be show up and play, and make your own game if you're not wanting to join one of the others.

XD My group is planning on playing a Naruto spin-off of D&D in the early morning waiting for the con to open up.

DM (Itachi): Theres a mirror in the room.
Sasuke: Yes, and I step up to the mirror and admire my vast unearthly beauty.
DM (Itachi): Take a fortitude save.
Sasuke: *rolls dice*
DM (Itachi): ...Yes. Upon looking into the mirror a bolt of lightning shoots out and kills you.
Sasuke: DAMMIT MELISSA STOP KILLING MY CHARACTER!! >.<

Is anyone doing tabletop willing to teach someone who has no idea what a twenty-sided die looks like the basics?

I imagine that this would be one of those times that you just ask one of the other onlookers and see if they can explain it, but... oO;  Felt like asking anyway X3;;

(I'm one of those people who can read the rules and still not get it.  I need to see it in action, and unfortunately, all my friends in this area have "moved beyond" D&D and are now doing Crack ^^;;)

If there's not, I'd be surprised.  In fact, the odds are pretty dang good that it would be no problem at all... what happened last year, and I expect is what will happen again, is that any GM who shows up can plop down and run a game.  So if you're wanting to run a Slayers game, I really don't see a problem with it.

Is there a way to reserve table space and put up a sign-up sheet so that i won;t have to rely just on people walkiung up to the table and offering to play? RPGs at conventions just doin't seem to work that way.

Also, if there are any BESM and Slayers fans in the group, I'm looking for a good writeup of Naga just in case she shows up in ym game,. Usually I can imrpvoise her, but it would be nice to have stats -- and since GOO's license does not extend to the movies or OVAs there is no official writeup for the bounciest sorceress in anime history.

Huh.  It worked well enough that way last year...  But if you want to get a signup sheet put together, feel free.   As for "table space" specifically, I can't say "yes" for the major reason that I really don't know exactly how much space we will have.  I'm pretty sure we'll have plenty... if we have half as much space as we had last year we'll have enough.

Gaming setup and GMing
« Reply #14 on: July 28, 2004, 11:51:21 pm »
Okay, the offcial info on how we're setting up GMing. Drop-ins will be allowed like last year, but if you're really sure you want to run something right now, then email me. At the actual con I will have a sign outside the gaming room to let outsiders know what game is being played and when. My email is Nyco27@yahoo.com and I check that far more than I check these forums!

Next, to newbies: personaly I see d20 gaming as overly extensive (no one kill me, I'm a GM!) and it took me a while to get the hang of it too. Although I am running a first edition (hurray for first eds!) version of Legends of the Five Rings. (For those who don't know what that is just think a samurai rp with spellcasting and you'll have a pretty good idea.) Anyways, L5R is a D10 based game that I can make as complex or as simple as the gamers need it to be. As long as I don't have over a dozen players like last year... lol

Hope that helps all yas!

Dude... Thats not very many books at all! At our D&D sessions, we have about 4 3rd ed. PHBs, 2 3.5 ed. PHBs, 2 3rd ed. DM guides, 1 3.5 ed. DM giude, 1 Oriental Adventures, 1 Deities and Demigods, 1 Races of Faerun, 1 Epic Level handbook, and a Draconomicain book (dragons). We also have 2nd edition books that we reference every so often.

I think we would go crazy without our floor covered in books.

BESM I've never played. Never heard of either, really. I would deffinitely be interested in playing some D&D while at the con, and I'd probably like to watch some of the others just to learn about them.

Anyone a vampire the masquerade player?? I haven't played that game in years because all my friends here are into D&D and nothing else!

Tabletop gaming? I'm definitely up for that.  However, I am a bit of a n00b at tabletop RPGs, but I am a quick learner!  I'm ready to play some BESM (sorry, not familiar with the d20 system), or Mekton Alpha, or something else.  And yes, I am willing to play a "meat-shield" chara for the benefit of the group.  :P

One thing I might add that I am doing in my game is that I'm doing pretty much all the math and technical stuff in advance... basically the character sheets will tell you exactly what to roll.  This will (hopefully) make it easier on anyone who is unfamiliar with any game system I run... particularly since D20 games can be a tad arduous for anyone who isn't familiar with them.

As opposed to, say, Palladium games which are easy enough that I know a 4 year old GM!
*snicker*

Actually d20 is one of the more simple systems. They streamlined it to make it more available and inclusive, therefore more marketable.

Oh, and a side comment.
The Trigun RPG that I saw today at Bridgetown Games was a d20 book.
