Eugene Area Anime/Manga Club???
« on: May 31, 2006, 07:47:04 pm »
I just heard that there are no anime clubs here, now that I started to get serious about anime/manga.

I would like to know if there are interested parties to meeting and discussing such.

I have Sunday and Monday nights off. So far, may change to Fridays, Saturdays in August.

Part of why I would like to do this, is this upcoming Kumoricon will be my first con, of anything, and I would like to get to know some people before I show up in Portland. It may also help me sound more knowledgeable about more subjects than what I have already actually seen/read.

Maybe we could have a baseball game of subs vs. dubs? lol

Once I clean up and reorganize my shop I’m going to start D&D & Board games here again and was thinking of having anime and samurai movie viewings too.   It's a few more weeks/months away as it is a total mess and it's dependant on getting a storage loft and sewing loft built just to make room, as now there are 2-foot wide paths around the place.  Of course if any one knows of heavy timber for cheap or free to haul away it will make it go faster.  Not that any one in town would want to use my sewing loft or some messy creation station space

I'd be game if timing worked with me scheduel which is basically not tuesday - thursday and you have a deal. And hell, if we get enough interest I may be willing (someone kill me now before I do too much) be willing to restart TUNAC in the fall.

Right now for me, Sundays and Mondays are all the choice I have. I work evenings, and those two are my days off.

jaybug39@yahoo.com

895-5095, or call here at work 346-2215 if you would like to get together. I really don't know what we need to have to make this something people would want to go to. I guees we could meet at my house in Creswell, unless someone has better ideas.

So if I clean up my shop and have a Seven Samurai/Princess Monoke night 3 peaple will show up (after we can play with plastic ninja army men)

Ok, how's this, bring DVD(s) that you would like to show, and come to my house this Sunday evening the 11th June 2006?

I'll make dinner, and have some refreshing refreshments. Don't expect Japanese food, I am not good enough in making those presentations. But do let me know if you have dietary requirements.

If nothing else, this should get me motivated to really clean the house. I hope you aren't allergic to cats.

So whats going on with the Anime Clubs or groups in Eugene.

Is the old TUNAC crew still meeting at the Bowling Ally or at there homes.  What is the contact info again for the secret group of the old TUNAC core members, I had it on a napkin but then I had a maple doughnut.

Any one having anime parties comming up, what happned to Fate Ruin's parties

Any want to watch anime and play with costume stuff in a cold wearhouse building full of leather.

If TUNAC does not reform.  Whats the chance the old Gaurd could help some kids on campus with TUNAC:TNG

Lets get something going at least a few times a year.  In a few more weeks i'll have a lot more space  (if my friend ever comes by with a truck to the dump)

And bring your aunts

I guess no one around here wants to do anything. Now the question is, are the ageists? Or what other kind of elitists are they?

Have you got your work site cleaned up yet? do you have something bigger than a 13" B&W TV? Otherwise, what do we do, go bowling? Visit Babysugarbear at work?

I have sort of cleaned up.  I moved some furniture around and built more shelves and I need to finish a bit more then will some how get rid of all those stacks of wood for shelf building.  I was ready to do it all months ago but some of it has been waiting for certain people who say they will be over to help build shelves “next week” and it’s worth he wait because they know what they are doing but never do come over.  Or waiting for weeks for some one who will make a dump run or even take stuff 3 blocks to Goodwill.

Going to bring down a bigger TV and get a cheapo VCR and maybe DVD player

I am currently (shooting myself in the foot) working on trying to get TUNAC restarted. If any of yas are UofO students or nearby when would you like meeting?

Furthermore UofO prof Miyao is running a Japanese Cinema night open to the public Thursdays at 7pm on campus in Lillis 182.

I sent you a PM about some new kids at U of O who were asking if I knew about any anime clubs on campus.

Hmmmmm I used to go to a lot of the free movies at the U of O in the foreign language building and once in CHAPMAN HALL.  Come to think of it that was a reason I did not go to TUNAC a lot it was also on Thursdays at 7.00.  One time at band camp.. oh wait no one time on the bus on the way to the U of O.   I spied  an asian woman (WOMAN a bit older then the college GIRLS) dressed all mousey with glasses with her nose in a book (thats the best way to get my attention) so I sneaked an oogle over the top of my book and was wondering if she wants to go see a free samurai movie and get Ice cream but I figured she had more nerdilichious things to do.  Then I kicked around the campus area for an hour before the free movie.  I walk in the room at 7:00 and not only was the time in the paper wrong and I walked in on a class but the teacher was the one I had Oogled.

Nyco27,

I PMed Vondan a week or so ago about anime clubs on campus. I didn't know you were interested in starting one up. I'm a freshman, so I don't know much about these things but I am always interested in helping out and meeting fellow anime junkies. =)

yes I sent her a note with your PM.  So your job is to gather an army of Anime fans so she can restart the group as an offcial U of O club.  Keep an eye out for any one with an Anme T Shirt or bag (except Helo Kitty that has crossed over into mainstream and pepale who dont know about anime have HK stuff)   And  dont forget Emerald City comics has the largest selection of anime in the city and the manager is the inpseration for the comic guy on the simpsons.

I've talked to Prof. Steven Brown and he's agreed to be our advisor now I just have to get the old chaters and such from Beau or from the UofO - whichever ends up being faster and I'll let you all know from there.

Like the thread title indicates it's the Eugene/Springfield/Gleenwood tri city area.   The theater is called 'Movies 12' the old 12 screen multyplex in Gateway mall that was turned into a bargin theater (All shows $1.50 0r less) after 'Cinema 17' the 17 screen multyplex opened at the other end of the mall (cinemark is so creative with the names)

does Longview still have all those hills of volcanic ashes next to the train station

Ok prices go as follows...

Mondays- Family night... (three or more people go to a movie its 50 cents a person)
Wednesdays- Dollar night... (everybody gets in for a dollar a person)
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday- Regualar $1.50 nights
(but hey its cheap right?)

And don't complain about prices for drinks and popcorn.. I hear enough of that and thats how we make our money... otherwise there will be no discount theater and your tickets would be 20+ dollars per person...think about it that way before complaining.... ty XD

Hmm, that makes sense I guess.  I remember in Japan paying over $10 for one movie ticket and I'm thankful we don't have to pay that.

Anyway...

The Eugene/Springfield/Gleenwood tri city area is about 2 hours or 110 miles south of portland.

After the next Kumoricon meeting In eugene (november or December) there will be cookies and cosplay & prop project brainstorming at Von Dan's

By train? That could be even longer. It should only take about 2 1/2 hours driving. Unless you hit Portland area traffic, which runs from 5am to 10 am and 3 pm 'til whenever. I guess. I don't have to do that. Only when I visit my family up that a way.

I hope Baby Sugar Bear posts tonight, after she finds out when she works. "Cause if she ain't working, I'm gonna go see the new Robin Williams movie.

Dude, I am going to need a little recovery time after the Duck game. It may be the 9ish movie for me. You'll have to phone me, as this is about it for emails and posts etc. No comp at home!

I may try for Over the Hegde.

I don't think Vondan drives. That or his watch is broken. It takes 1:40 to go from Eugene to Portland, or the other way. According to this atlas here at work, it's about 40 miles. Which means it's about the same distance Portland-Salem. And doing about 80, that's 1/2 an hour.  So it should only take you about 2 to 2 1/2 hours to get down here.

My mother lives in Hood River, that's a 3 hour tour, a 3 hour tour!

The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed.

Any one else going to the meeting on October 28th.  We can all meetup at my shop and caravan there (And then I can get a ride)   I'd pay for gas and bring snakes and snacks.

I was going to go with some one who would rather stay in town and watch a U of O Yoai Ball game

this month it is in Salem at Chemeketa College.  On the same day the anime club at the college is having a party so we can all stay for that

The meeting places move around between Eugene Portland and salem and maybe vancover this year.

Thanks for your efforts and this new information. My current enrollment is at LCC, but I'm not aware of any kind of campus group there. Is there a link for the calendar for the showings for this Japanese Cinema? Have you found it a valuable opportunity for outreach?

I just wanted to say hi.  I live in Eugene and would be very interested in an anime club.  I'm really into anime but don't really have any friends who are also into it.  I have weekends free.  It would be really cool to socialize with some fellow otaku.  :)

BabySugarBear, please post your new schedule so we can all visit you. I may have to go alone, my girlfriend can't seem to be dragged to a movie. Although she did manage to watch RV with me.

If I didn't need to eat so much popcorn and sodas and schnacks, I could afford to go to movies more often. $1.50 for a movie, and $15 for schnacks.

And that's with a small soda!

OK I have briefly returned... what I would like... IS TO GET THIS CLUB STARTED... I want us to have a club in the valley for anime. This weekend is not good for me but the rest of you do me a favor and start communicating with eachother. I want to meet up in the next few weeks and/or months so that we can start up our club and I can get some hugs from people. I love you guys so you better get this thing in motion! Start talking, finding out where we can meet, what we can or can't do that kinda thing ok? So I will be here on and off but I <3 all of you...

Ok so this is the deal... I work thursday, friday, sunday and wednesday night... so my only free night this week to meet is saturday. SO... I would like to organize a meeting for that night.  All those who can make it please let me know! This way we can get something going and I can know how many people plan on showing up!  Jaybug and I were thinking that Shari's over near the gateway mall would be a good place to have a sit down dinner/meeting just so we could get an idea of who is who and all that. Please let us know who can make it or who is interested in the club!

I know who is babysugarbear is from the Photo thread (and seeing her at the theater) and I know jay and jay knows me, I might know some of the others from the old campus or ECC anime club but who knows.    So if BSB gets a table at 6.15 and tells the staff it's for 6 peaple and it's for an anime club

Alright so the first general meeting of the as we are called right now OUNAC (Other UnNamed Anime Club) that is a temporary name... so dont yell at me... went well.... We have four members that showed up including myself.

Our next meeting will be at Vondan's shop at 865 Conger Street in Eugene. I am not sure what we will be watching yet. Those who plan to attend this meeting it will be Saturday the 11th and I would like to know who will plan on attending this meeting. The actual time will be announced soon. Bring Snacks!

Thank you to those who did attend tonights meeting. I had a great time. Don't forget to invite your friends who might be interested in joining!.... Our plan is to have another great time and watch some good anime!

Excellent... I will be sure to be there next week; I already know where Dan's shop is. :)

Sorry I didn't join in this week. I didn't catch the thread posts, and also I was called in for temp work -- the dang Ducks game, again...but hey, gotta have money before anime. Ducks games don't come every week, though, so they shouldn't interfere often (some people here watch football, unlike me, not to mention the traffic on game day).

I'm glad you at least got four people; that's good for a club that's just started out. If each of you try to bring friends, you will have enough for a good time. :)

Hmm, cat ears... I really need to make me a pair sometime. The ones you can make for free at the con look too low-budget and fragile, and the ones you can buy at the con cost a fortune and are not personalized.

I think our plan is to try to have meetings every other saturday after this. I also need those who are interested to give out these simple things your name, phone number, email and user name :P... its also nice to know what you prefer to be called and age.... so far we have a wide varity of ages. Yay for older otaku and young otaku alike... I like the age differences... means that nerds don't die off right after highschool... no they go on to run anime conventions! (meg don't hurt me I love the convention... don't eat my future babies!)

Die off right after high school?... Heck, I attended my first anime convention when I was 20. I had just *barely* started to get interested towards the end of high school. Although, admittedly, anime fans have apparently gotten slightly younger on average, thanks to Cartoon Network and other channels that have been airing more and more dubbed anime series...

Y'know, I think it's rather weird that some people talk to Meg like age is a sensitive issue. For instance, Nyco, our Programming Director, is around 18, and some people comment on how "young" she is. I don't remember Meg's exact age, but I don't think the age difference between Meg and Nyco is any more than 8 years. Does it only take 8 years to go from "young" to "old"? :P .... ;)

Well, at the meeting on Saturday BSB declared everyone else at the table to be "creepy old guys", so I guess I'm already old at 28, and creepy to boot.  ;)

Okay. I have almost zero DVDs, though. I can bring Fruits Basket if you want, but I only have disc 1 so far.

I do, however, have two unopened DVDs I've won at conventions that I wanted to exchange rather than watch. So I could conceivably get more Fruits Basket, or whatever.

Also, the reason I have almost no DVDs is because I usually rent them from Emerald City Comics. If there's something we'd definitely like to watch that nobody owns -- practically anything -- I can probably get it there. We'll probably have to talk about that at a meeting, though. And for that to happen, I'm going to have to show up first, so I'll shut my mouth now until next meeting...

Yeah Like Radien said ECC has the biggest anime selection in town and they are only $1 or $1.50 to rent

I close at 6 so any time after that is good

I’m looking at a box of anime I have at work and it’s all I have.  I don’t know what ones are DVD what ones are VCD and what ones are Avi Mpeg.  It depends on what DVD player I bring from home that will play them. They will all play on the PC but I hate watching n the little PC screen so have not watched most of them yet.

Studio Giblets set

Disk 1:  Nausicaa & Only Yesterday
Disk 2:  Whisper of the Heart & Mononoke Hime
Disk 3:  Totoro & Pom Poko
Disk 4:  Porco Rosso  & Laputa
Disk 5:  Kiki & Tombestone of the fireflies
Disk 6:  Ocean waves & Music Video

A loose Mononoke Hime (for who ever gets the most raspberry jelly on the face just like Mononoke)
A loose Kiki (for who ever delivers the most pepsi)

Ai Tori Aoshi 1-2 VCD
Macross Plus
Ah My Goddess
An unnamed one for who ever can show ID proving over the age of 30
The Guyver ep 1-12
Ghoast In the Shell
Escaflowne ep 1-26 (40 min Jap versions I think)
EscaFlowne the movie.

I also have a few horror and Kung foo and Wuxia movies here and have more at home including some classic samurai movies (One night this year will be for Kurosawa Films) and by January I HAVE to find Legends of the Condor Heroes 1988 Hong Kong TV version.

Hey Gang I just got Another DVD player at SVDP   I spent 30 min checking it out with 3 dif DVD's and it seems to work at least for normal North American DVD.

My hands were full but I may go back to check the 20 VCR's at goodwill.   As I said my tv at home stopped working and the extra one we put in the front room is really small like a 14 inch.  BSB said she had an extra TV is that so? Any one PM me about if you want to bring a TV down and if for good or until the friends who said they had extras can bring them down and if you can bring it  down friday or early saterday so i can set up all the cables and  stuff (I can do it I have 50 credits of video production and used to intern at a cable station)   Even some of the free tv's off Craigs list would work but i'm sans car to get them.

I'm off to look at the GW VCR's (and get the Derby I saw so i'll look dapper)

EDIT:

Grrrrrrrrrrrr Damit

If I had not stopped by work to drop off the dvd players and get more petty cash and hop on line to check the K con forum I would have got back to GW in time.   As I was walking in some kid was buying the Derby, he wont know what to do with it, I'm the one with 4 trunks of hats.

I found a VCR that works to.  Fo ryou kids to young to remember TUNAC showings were all on Video tape

Um.... I have a tv that has a dvd and vcr built into it. I can bring it if we need it... its not a big screen tv but it is bigger than a computer moniter. XD....

um.. I have three sailor moon movies, the escaflowne movie, kikis delivery service, spirited away, and castle in the sky also one of the tenchi movies is lying around here somewhere. ^_^ I am gonna see what I can do about borrowing some stuff from people.

Vondan let me know if you would like to use my tv or not. All it means for me is to unplug my ps2 from it :P Yay kingdom hearts!!!

Right now plan on Bringing it until

A.  My friend who loaned me a 12 inch TV for work then took it back because it fit n the Van he was driving to LA for some movie meetings this week, brings the other bigger TV he said he had around

B.  My Room mate said a friend of his was going to give us a TV or two (Mine stopped working when I was not home and others were using it so there may be a story and a reason he thinks he should find me another TV.)

C.  I go get one from a junk store or such, they had some that worked well and the right size i'm thinking of for $25 but I just spent $35 on DVD and VCR and I have some big bills on Friday.  If I do well the rest of the week we could take a road trip to the store and get a TV on Saterday.

oh so thats why it was mononoke hime instead of princess mononoke... lol....

Anyway... i am sure i can bring this thing... I just gotta find the remote for it which is floating around my bed somewhere.

Alright so the meeting will be THIS SATURDAY at 6pm. Here is the thing. I work from 10:30 to 5:30 that same day so I might be a tad bit tired and possibly grouchy but I will be there no earlier than 5:50pm.... Not to mention if that weren't enough I have to be a consessionist on the morning after the opening of pirates of the caribbean 2 in my theater... so... prepare yourselves.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALRIGHTY MEETING STUFF:

Time: 6pm Saturday November 11th
Place: Vondan Leatherworks 865 Conger Street #17, Eugene

I am not sure what we are watching yet. Bring whatever anime you have laying around and we should be able to vote on something suitable for the meeting.

CHAIRS... ok so there are a few chairs but people if you want to be insured a comfy spot then you may want to bring something soft to sit on or possibly one of those fold up captain chairs... i am bringing one for myself or posssibly my mom to sit in.

YES MAMA BEAR WILL BE THERE THE ENTIRE TIME.... so people.. be nice to her... she is not as anime savy as the rest of us.

OKIES SNACKY SNACKY....

Ok and if you want other snacks please do bring them. Soda and other snacks are more than welcome

I will be bringing my tv for this event. I did finally find the remote.

There will be a door prize drawing at the meeting. One person will get to have something kinda cool. So be there!

I hope to see you all there!!!! SHOW UP OR I WILL BEAT YOU WITH THE PARASOL I BOUGHT AT THE LAST KUMORICON!!! Anyway So I will check here before I leave for work tomorrow and hopefully all that can will show up.

I found a TV while my friend was in LA he had an estate auction and allthough they sold a 200 year old violin for $15 and swords from the movie hook for $7.50 they did not sell the junk tv.   We spent all last night going over what was missing (that was not on the sale list or in rooms marked not for sale) and what was broken and what was sold for less than the listed reserve prices and loading guns.   So I have a TV down hear now  yeah.

scratch that about the tv, last night in the garage it looked fine but I have been fiddling with it for 40 minutes and the image from the VCR and DVD is grainy and tinted red

I do have a stack of paper plates but only one fork

So, is there anyone besides me and BSB who likes to play Soul Calibur?  I have all three of them and could bring my PS2 and/or Dreamcast if anyone was interested.  I never get to play it against other people.  Could be fun.  :)  But, like I said, I'm busy and won't be there on the 25th.

Heeh I <3<3 Soul Calibur. But I've only played the second one >C

I really suck <_>

But it's entirely enjoyable! :D
Someday...I'll get around to you.

That's OK, I probably suck too.  I only get to play against the computer so a real person who's good at it would probably kick my butt.

Well, that's two people besides me who want to play.  I'll probably bring the PS2 with me next time I come and we'll see what happens.  :)

I got them to make Larry Elmore inspired warrior barbies like I seen Valkyrie barbie on Ebay for $200.  So far all I have made was a Biker guy in a little leather jacket with a zipper and every thing.   I started a Pirate girl when the call screener on a local radio show said she wished some one would make an action figure of her and said she went as a pirate for haloween.  But when she said she got engaged I stopped that project, but I had made was a little sword and glasses

Shhhh don't be talking about that stuff.  If every one knew about the hundreds of RPG books, 50 board games, the two golf bags of swords we will be swamped with nerd guys.  The Point of the club is to get more young ladies to bring there aunts or much older sisters and cousins who never had a chance to explore there imaginations (be nerdy) in HS.  So lets just talk about the barbie's, the 9 sewing machines and the cabinet full of lace.

So were all on for tonight!!

I don't want to clean my shop for nothing

BSB can you bring your TV again.  I'v spent $60 on vcr & dvd player for the club but I still have not found a good enough cheap TV.  Some one me gave me a TV that's to red and fuzzy, some one gave me one thats built into a cabinet 6 feet long so i did not take it and some one offered one that has like a 9 inch screen.  I see some at the junk store from time to time but never when I'm with some one with a car AND have extra cash in my pocket.  I have found some that work cause no one bothered to figure out how to use the tv menu W/O the remote so they sit there on a non channel looking like they don't work.

Any ways be there or be round cause we are all ready square

Wait, December 9th? Why the 9th?  Aren't we going to do something on the 2nd (this Saturday)?

I'll probably be gone the weekend of the 9th.  I will be free on the 2nd, however, but it depends on whether my girlfriend wants to go, because she'll be down from Portland this weekend.

Sorry, I missed where you said it was gonna be biweekly. I just assumed it'd be weekly, since TUNAC always was. :)

By the way, one of the old TUNAC members, Terry (a.k.a. Wuntvor), has been holding a weekly anime night ever since TUNAC was disbanded. I've emailed him to make sure he knows about this new club.

Indubitably. (dang I need to get a car)

Not sure if I'll show up this weekend...we'll see how it goes.

If we need a TV badly enough, I always have my immortal Commodore 64 monitor. ;) It still works great... however, it doesn't seem right for a club to watch anime on something that small. I think we should instead keep looking into the University sponsorship, or even just start holding it there unofficially like we used to.

By the way, do you think we could have a discussion about the club's name once we get about 8 members or more? OUNAC doesn't really roll off the tongue, and I thought it'd be nice to actually be a "named" anime club this time around...

If nothing else we could play around with anagrams. "The Ultimate Northwest Anime Club"? ... "The Unified Neo Anime Church"? ...Yeah, something like that... ;)

A while back Nyco27 said she was trying to get TUNAC reinstated and had found a willing faculty adviser and I put her in touch with some freshmen who wanted to join but I have not heard back on that.  Would the U of O want 2 anime clubs hanging around one with creepy old guys.  I'm open to meeting any ware. And I would not be apposed if our club folded into TUNAC like the double decker taco we can be the refried beans layer.  My place is till open for Movies  rpg  board games any thing that will get the nerdy aunts out of the house and to my lair.

And if TUNAC is up by the  Con they need to work the club booth and sell griled TUNAC and cheese sandwhiches

Ok so this is what I have got figured out. I am cool with doing meetings every week with the anime portion being every other week. Also here is another thing.... I won't be able to go to everysingle meeting but just because I am not there doesn't mean that the meetings can't occur. I don't expect every person to be able to make every meeting. Another thing I don't really know if I want us to be called just an anime club cause I guess it makes me feel like our club doesn't accept people who are nerdy but don't particularly care for anime...

on a side note... here is my lil vote for the club name... I think that Nerdy By Nature would be a cute name because well we are all nerdy in one way or another so its true, its cute, it has a bit of a ring to it, easy to remember and it doesn't make us a certain type of nerd group but rather leaves it open for interpretation. But that is just what I have come up with... I am still leaving it open to all of us members to decide.

YAY we broke the 4 people standard ammount that have showed up to the meeting... XD We had 6 people show up tonight.

Vondan, Radien, Jaybug, Lit, A coworker of mine Nick and myself! We watched Full Metal Panic and played on the ps2. Over all I think we had a pretty good time chatting, watching anime and playing video games. NERDS JOIN US NEXT WEEK for roleplay gaming, nerd chat and other such festivites... the next anime meeting/viewing  will be on the 23rd just before Christmas ^_^ Hopefully we can see you all there again!....

I may not be at the next meeting (the 16th) due to something up in portland. If I can attend I will but if not... don't let Vondan eat all the snackage..

Also I want to let people know that any snacks left behind after a meeting become club property and can be used by the club and possibly vondan if he gets hungry enough ^_^

SANDY CLAWZ WILL SUBDUE YOU.

Heheh. I'm going to have to attempt to create a Santa Claus in Soul Calibur 3 to go along with Ms. Sandy Clawz. I have a feeling I'll be able to come up with something pretty amusing.

What fun it is to ride and sing a slaying song tonight...

I promise not to eat any thing that was not open, that means we have 3 bags of chips and a 3 jars of dip left and a bottle of Kogome.  Looks like the pocky was open and so were the pickles

Hmm, next meeting is on Christmas Eve Eve... Meaning, the 23rd. Well, I might be able to come. Count me as there unless I say otherwise.

By the way, I'd like to suggest that we try out Genshiken sometime. If you want to start an "otaku club," it's very... educational! ;)

Well I suppose someone would need to rent out Genshiken? Assuming Emerald Comics would have a copy.
I'm broke, pretty much until payday. I could bring one of my own. I have GITS SAC discs, a few Ghibli movies, the usual suspects there, and the first four discs of Vandread, and Bubblegum Crisis, oh, and Oh, or Ah My Goddess.

Duh, I keep forgetting that I am losing half of my weekend working overtime. So I won't be going anywhere other than work Saturday.

I'd be open to any RPG, the one the kids wanted to play was D&D but I might incorperat some D20 BESM or D&D Oriental Adventures to add some anime elements.  I have not played Buffy or serenity I may have the books on PDF (I have 40 giggle bytes of rpg PDF files (I just checked and I have the Buffy book by EDEN ) or there is a D&D Modern setting I have that is a clone of Buffy.

Actually rather then play the Buffy or Firefly RPG cant I just hang out with Allison Hanigan and Jewel Sate and date them both in character.

I think D&D is vastly overrated. Not to say I dislike D20. But ironically, I think D20 is better suited to settings other than medieval fantasy.

If you want anime elements, I strongly encourage D20 BESM rather than Oriental Adventures... largely because I've read over and approve of D20 BESM.

I'd be happy to try out an RPG at club, as long as it's anime-related and not in the D&D setting. I have simply played more D&D than I really care to in the past few years. :P

As for Joss Whedon, I think he is awesome, but if we want to create an anime club we'd probably better watch the non-anime outside of "advertised" club meetings (after meetings, perhaps).

It may sort of be that one week is anime the other is something else nerdy.  So something going on every week since half the time we have just had nerd talk or played games

As I said I’m not stuck on any one system although for cost effectiveness If I’m running a game I’ll try to do something D20 as I have a lot of stuff for it, I’m familiar with it and I can easily find more resources.  I’m also kind of tired of the normal fantasy D&D (Even is HS we used 0 ED D&D to play the old west and something like the Road Warrior and made up a space game.)  Last year I started a D20 Modern game set in 1937 but two of the players had to go and get jobs and the game ended right after the battle with Die Flagger Wyrms Flyng Circus and before they got out of New York and met Tammy Tessla or had the Airship battle against the Graf Wyvern and the Nazi Luft Komandos.

The main reason it started as D&D is the kids wanted to learn that one and I have the books all ready in hand (if we played old 1ed D&D I could loan every one a PHB).   I have a about 20 BESM files and was just looking at BESM D20 and rolled up a NPC and we could convert the one or two PC that are all ready rolled up.  So far nothing is set in stone other than one person rolled up a druid (because she wanted to have magic and a cute animal companion) and another may wants to play a fairy.  I'm leaning toured an adventure like when Inyuahsa and his friends are wandering around the woods doing stuff and D20 BESM does not have a lot of resources for medieval or outdoors adventure.  Oh what if it turns into a medieval Magical Girl campaign

And then of course we could get no farther then look though all my stuff and watching Anime.  Anyways keep sending input RadIEn.   And if you wanted to run the game then I could play (No play since K con all my groups floped) and I'll play a magical Lizard Girl martial artist

Some of my sister's friends from out of town are arriving this evening and staying for a few days, so I may or may not be there.  We'll see what happens tonight. If we end up exchanging gifts, I may be homebound again.

BESM D20 doesn't have a lot of medieval fantasy adventuring provisions, you say? Would it be possible to start with BESM D20 and work in whatever you want from D&D? Or the other way around?

I dunno, I just really like to get away from the rigid setup D&D always starts with. Rogues disarm traps and backstab people, fighters hit things in the face, elves find hidden doors, etc. etc.  Plus all the D&D GMs I've ever had have had us spend 60% of our time in a slimy cave or smelly dungeon. I know that's optional, but it always seems to happen, and I really wonder why my hero shouldn't have better things to do with his/her time.

I do have a medieval anime character or two that I could play. But I do hope we have access to BESM D20 skills and classes. I really liked a lot of what I saw, and the one time I got to play regular BESM was a lot of fun. ^^

Anime Friday at my place
« Reply #213 on: December 30, 2006, 12:19:25 pm »
Hi all,

I just discovered this thread, Radien told me about it.  I have been hosting anime at my home every Friday night starting at 9:00pm for about a year now.  I was one of the main members of the old TUNAC anime club.  I have a 46" HDTV and 8.2 surround system as well as a media center computer that is tied into it. I can play DVDs, AVI's, MKV's, OGM's, you name it. I also have a massive collection of anime and torrent downloads.  I haven't updated it in awhile.

http://wuntvor.home.comcast.net/anime_list.htm

My wife, 16 year old son, and 21 year old daughter are usually around, as well as my daughters "girl posse", so younger female/male members should feel safe in attending.  I have no problems in meeting with parents of younger members if they wish to "check me out"  If anyone wants to attend feel free to contact me.  Space is sort of limited and I don't usually provide food or beverages anymore, although you can bring your own.  I will occasionally try to plan a meal with some gyoza (potstickers).

I can be reached at the following E-Mail

wuntvor@comcast.net

or you can call me at home  541-689-4219  in Eugene

I have a map to my home on-line that I will E-Mail to any interested parties.

Hope to see some of you soon.

@ Radien

As a DM I'm pretty loose it's about having fun.  For the Pulp Game set in 1937 we used PC classes, skills and feats/abilities from D20 Modern, D20 Past, Trinity D20 Adventure and D&D 3E.  It was what ever the players wanted for a PC concept and some of the campaign was modified to fit the PC backgrounds every one wrote or told me about.  We can see how serious any one is about actually playing or just looking at the pictures of elves in the books and playing with the minis.   And if any of your sister's friends are nerdettes you are welcome to bring them.

@ Wuntvor

Yeah Steve gave me your info once on a napkin at a K con meeting.  I don't remember any one else may age at TUNAC, it seamed after the meeting they would say creepy old guy and run off to watch anime.  I kept forgetting to go and or transportation, I’d be interested in the location.   And every one expects me to ask if your wife will have any of her single friends or sisters there nerdy with glasses 30 to 40 YO

You might as well bring it, every one misses anime and we have not watched any the last few meetups.   If I still have the $50 in my pocket by the time of the meeting we could take a filed trip to goodwill to look for a TV (I never have a ride when i find a good one) but I have a ride coming to get propane and snacks in a few

Actually, we spent most of the time chatting and watching Genshiken. However, I was only there a little over two hours, so I can't speak for what else was done that evening.

Wuntvor was there, and it was good to see him. I know he's got his own weekly anime thing, and it sounds like our two "gigs" aren't going to be consolidated, since Wuntvor wants to focus on the anime portion. But either way, I hope we can share members between the two. :)

Anyway, I'd like to continue showing Genshiken in the future, as it's very "educational" about the differences and similarities our club shares with Japanese clubs of the same type. That and it's damn funny once you get a few episodes into it.

I got thee at 6.15 and BSB got there at 7.00 then Radien called and came over at 7.30 and then Wuntvor called to come over at 8.00.

I thought no one was gonna show up so I ate all the Peperoni and ham for the crackers

We had geek talk and watched two eps of Genshiken Radien had on his Lap top and we hope to have some one rent the rest from Emerald City.   As the last 3 meeting have crashed with holiday weeks we hope to have a more decivive schedual the rest of the year.

I intend to rent Genshiken this time, but if worse comes to worse I have plenty more episodes still on my laptop. :) The translation is good either way, but the fansub has a bit more in the way of Japanese lingo and footnotes.

Anyway, yeah, if you want to catch up, watch episodes 1 and 2.

If enough people show up this Saturday who haven't seen it, perhaps we can see about rewatching the first two again. In this series I'd say that the first two episodes are pretty valueable, as they set up some of the quirky situations that keep developing throughout the rest of the series. ;) It's still quite possible to start in the middle of the series, though.

Thank you vondan.

I need all the pocky boxes I can get so that I can build my armor this spring.

My problem is that I don't have enough of the SAME kind of boxes. I have a lot of different flavors and one or two of the seasonals.

If anybody out there has giant pocky boxes i'll actually pay you a little for them. I buy those when I can but it takes so long to finish them because few of my friends actually like it.

Are we gonna play any Soul Calibur tonight?  I have a PS2 and the game if BSB doesn't want to drag hers over.

NO remote BUTT!   I just realized it has the new types plug things on the front ( I went to video school 20 years ago) so I can plug the DVD player directly into it and use it on the Line input setting bypassing the RF Modulator but cant have it in a daisy chain with the VCR or Antennae.   So we can watch DVD  VHS (built into TV)  and game boxes.

I'm looking at how cool that flash Gordon DVD is right now.

The one thing we are missing is the heater tank is empty so if any one with a car can go get it filled that would make Steve happy.

Although I called my friend this morning about the remote and getting the tank filled.  He was in Florence dealing with Drama and said he was coming back to town but his cell phone don’t work outside of Eugene  (Young men I advise you don’t date chicks with addictive problems)

Just so you know, I'm planning on coming by for club today. :) I don't remember if this is supposed to be a club week or not, but I've missed twice, so I'm coming either way. That okay, Dan? I will bring my laptop, plus other stuff if desired.

I plan on having the club tonight and said before any one who wanted to see my shop after the meeting can come over.  All though I may have to run an errand after 6 if I do not get together with some other friends potential bussiness partners to get it done before I go to the meeting at 1.30 but that should only take me 30 to 45 min and another friend will drive me and I may just send him to do it anyways.

I'll know more exactly by the time i go to the meeting.

I challenge any one from Eugene who is a member of Tunac, OuNac, NbN or freelance nerds to donate some time to the Kumoricon booth at next weeks Asian Celibration at the lane county fairgrounds.

As far as I know now I will be there 7 hours on sunday so if I follow my normal routine I will have to spend $42 on noodles at one plate an hour.

We cant rep Eugene with only 3 volunteers this was the town that founded K Con.  If onlt the three show up they will mock us and say "Is this all you got, is this it, is this all you can conjour up Sarudan"

If your up to the challenge contact Antares and the street team

Is there gonna be club this weekend or is everyone gonna be at the Asian Celebration?  I'm thinking about checking that out for a little while.  I might have someone who wants to come check out the club if there's gonna be people there.

I think I am not going to buried in homework or other stuff this Saturday. I was wondering if I should bring my new Hellsing disc, or if we are doing other nerdy stuff besides anime?

Let me know your thoughts, please.

Not sure, but I'll be coming this week. I have to bring some stuff to Dan regardless, so might as well combine it with a Saturday club trip.

I'll try to be there as early as I can after 6.

Dude, I tried calling you twice but you're on the damn internet! ;) Maybe you'll see this post here.

Not that it's terribly unreasonable that you are, though... I first tried to call around 9, so it was probably obvious that I wouldn't be showing up in person.  For those who don't know, it's because I'm sick and don't want to drive all the way across town (not to mention expose you guys to the bug).

Anyway, no big deal; I just wanted to talk about business, so to speak.

yea we got tired of each other.   The new place is about the same size and $200 cheaper, and without the grumpy landlord there were at one time people who wanted to move in and share rent on the shop.  I'll loose some walk in Biz but I all ready lost a lot of walk in Biz getting the flu and Pnemonia and not being here.   I got the sports company assembly thing back for the summer and I'm gonna try and do events and the costume stuff more

I'm pretty busy too. :(  Next weekend Sakura Con, the weekend after I'm having friends from out of town.  And even if I wasn't busy with them, I would be going to the Kumori Con staff retreat (can't believe they scheduled it for one week after Sakura Con, agh).

Everyone and their dog is putting SOME sort of event on in April. So it looks like I'm going to be busy as much as three out of four weekends.

I have FMP, TSR discs 1-3.

Yeah, BSB and I have been chatting about a more public place to meet. Dan's place was always a bit out-of-the-way, so once he decided to move we started talking about holding it in a more central location.

Tomorrow we're going to meet at the Starbucks on 13th St. at 3pm to discuss club plans and to create a promotional flyer. If you're interested, check out the topic here.
