Tips for the Summer
« on: June 18, 2004, 02:14:03 pm »
As it is now about 100 F at my house in Western Washington, I've decided to declare it officially summer.  An icky heat filled summer. ^.^;

So here are some tips for surviving the summer heat without landing yourself in the hospital or winning a Darwin Award.

1.  Stay hydrated.  If you're feeling weak, very warm/hot, have any headaches, or just sweating, drink some water.  Water helps you LIVE! ^.^

2. Avoid caffeinated drinks.  Caffeine and alcohol both degydrate you, and will actually make you sicker.  So lay off the Mountain Dew and drink juice. ^.^

3. Get a really good coolent system for your computer.  ^.^

4. Try to stay out of the sun as much as possible.  Sunburns are not fun, I can ssure you.  If you do need to go out in the sun, wear sun block.  Most moisturizers are SPF 15 now, in case anyone wondered. ^.6

5. If you excersize (sp?), try to work out in the cool morning hours, or the cool evening hours.  That way you don't fall over dead of heat stroke.  And ALWAYS bring a bottle of water with you.

6.  If someone you know collapses, is VERY warm, and not sweating, CALL 911!!!  That's heat stroke, and it kills.  Try to keep them in shade, and give them SIPS of water until the paremetics arrive.

7. Streaking is stupid and leads to funny sunburned areas. ^.^;

8.  Don't skinny dip in the lake that the old guy says constains some sort of ancient evil/ deadly serial killer/ where several students died the week before.  You are probably an extra, and will not survive.

9. Try to drink at least a cup and hour if you ARE working in the sun, probably more.

10. Gatorade may be fine and all for drinking if it's on hand, but the sugars it contains can make you ill if you are dehydrated.  Stick to water as your first choice of drinks.

That's all I can think of for now, but please play it safe this summer so that you ALL get to attend Kumori Con without the odd tale of some near death hospital visit. ^.^

bah....

http://www.dangerden.com

I've been watercooling for over 4 years now... but then again, I only recommend this for the saavy... I highly disagree with Fry's selling watercooling equipment.

as for the SLK-900, I agree, good heatsink... so is are the products at www.swiftnets.com.  Both will get you about the same performance... I highly recommend staying as quiet as possible though.  Having run with a black label delta for a while, it's not worth it.  That's one of many reasons I went to water.

Then again, you could always buy a mac... :-)  they just naturally keep cooler, and heck, the new G5s are already liquid cooled.  :-)

Just a couple of things to add:

Long-sleeve shirts are our friends, even during the summer.  A lightweight white shirt can help keep you cool, and you won't have to wear as much sunscreen.

Brimmed hats are also great, especially for people with short hair (and exposed necks).

Yeah, water is important.
When you refill you 52 oz. Mega Mug with pop be sure to to get a glass of water chaser.  :wink:

Seriously though, I use the water thing for my friend's houses, only ONE of them has AC!

As little as one glass of water for each can of pop can make a huge difference iny your well being.

"Trust me, on the sun screen."
I like my brand of sunscreen, it's SPF 1300 or so, it's called "roof".

even just sitting in the sun drains your energy, learned that  during track season, sure it feels good but you can get really weak.

what is this sun you speak of.  I spend my summers cooped up in a nice 68 F cooled apartment with the shades closed and the puter on :).  tho i will admit the occasional trips to the pool and hot tub provide some WONDERFUL eye candy *grins*

Not meaning to be picky (plus it has been awhile since I last posted), it's spelled "exercise."  Plus, don't get it confused with "exorcise."  Oddly enough, if you put that word in instead, it still makes sense.  ^_^

Yes, everyone, please stay fully hydrated while exercising and excorsizing! ^.^

I always get those two words confused. ^.^; (The spellings, not the meanings. ^.^ )

XD I went to visit my brother in Arizona for a week.  It was 115 outside and fairly humid.  Needless to say, I was in pain for a few days.  Arizona is odd...  they keep the stores at like.. 60F so if you walk out and into stores for a while, it gets really nasty.  ^^; I had to lay down and drink some water for a bit.

Las Vegas is kinda like that, all the casinos are really cold and the the air outside hits you about three feet from the doors.

I burn, then I mystically either tan, or get even whiter.

Either way, I just sit in front of the computer all day.  No risk of combustion there! ^.^
