Aw man, I'm looking at the review of SH in the newspaper (RegGuard) right now.  Looks like Roger Ebert didn't like it very much (1 1/2 stars).

Well I'm going to take your guys' word over his and still watch it.

What does it mean to you?

How do you think video games like Silent Hill (or in fact, any game) work as movies? Does it help or hinder the popularity of the game,  or does it not make a difference?

It's funny, I find myself citing Kotaku.com twice in about 15 seconds. They had an article up about the huge difference in reader review scores and professional critics' scores for Silent Hill. Massively panned by the critics, but high scores by the viewers. I suppose one would have to account for factors favorable to those high scores, such as people who didn't like the movie being unlikely to vote, or something like that.
You'll be loved, you'll be loved, like you never have known. When memories of me will seem more like bad dreams. Just a series of blurs, like I never occurred. Someday, you will be loved.

Saw it. Liked it for the most part. Awkward dialouge in some scenes made me cringe.

And the dialog in the game didn't?

"What is a wheelchair doing here??"

(not, "what are all these dead and mutilated half-human monsters doing here?")

Radio.
What's going on with that radio?

Yeah, the first game's dialog was pretty rough (what the hell is gyromancy?) but I don't think it was that bad for its time. The sequels got WAY better after all.

I've heard complaints about how the storyline was "all explained in a neat bundle of exposition" but I thought that a lot of the stuff, like good old Pyramid Head, was still just as weird and unexplained as it needed to be.

Still the best video game movie ever.

It just felt like they thought their audience would be dumb.

I'd jus tlike to say I HIGHLY doubt Ebert is a gamer.  Therefore it was probably WAY too over is head.  It was probably a big "WTF is going on, this sucks!" for someone that doesn't "get it," ya know?

Game movies in general - take them out of context with the game (i.e. Resident Evil) or they SUCK.
Bad game movies:
- Mortal Kombat II
- Street Fighter

Silent Hill? OWNED ME.

I went to see it the day it came out. I really liked it. I cant play those kinds of games (hee hee I get afraid and hide in the corner) but I really like watching someone play them.

My boyfriend plays Silent Hill (s) and he was really impressed with the movie. and I am going to buy it the day it comes out in stores!!
Trust is where it all begins...

Yeah, that's the kind of tone I got after reading his review.  He described stuff that, as a gamer, made sense to me.

And good news.  I found a used copy of SH 3.  I'm going to try it out later tonight (if I get some work done first).

Street Fighter is so bad that it's become a guilty pleasure :P

But the best gaming movie title is still claimed by Mario Bros. ;)

Oh GAWD I love that movie.  I wonder if I can still find a copy somewhere.

When that came out I was trying to figure out how to make a pair of those awesome "jump" boots.  ^^
