The sound of Kumori Con
« on: June 04, 2004, 04:59:40 pm »
Hello All,

I'm Michael and I did the lighting and sound in the main room of Kumori Con last year in Eugene.  This year it's going to be even better as I have acquired way more toys and I live in P-town, Mwa hahaha.

Anyway, I'm also on the list as to running the Dance part of the event and I would really like to get tons of input as to what music you would like to hear.  And more to the point what do you want to "shake it" to.  I'll have the right type of equipment to "mix" with and was thinking of some sort of combination of DDR favs mixed in with Anime soundtracks and general dance\pop\80's stuff.

If you just "gotta" hear something at the Con.  Please help me out and let me know.

Thanks,
-Michael-

pop and rap is some of the better dance music, you just have to find the good stuff
And now I'm a catgirl?

The voice of the one I love
was all I could hear as I lay broken in the darkness
My own voice faltered

Dance music is my forte!

Non-anime:
"Shake It" by Lee Cabera
"Summer Jam" by Underdog Project
"Night to Remember" by U-96
"How Did You Know" by Kurtis Mantronik pls. Chamonix
"We Like to Party" by the Venga Boys (old but a fave)
"All Things Keep Getting Better" by Widelife (the Queer Eye theme song, but not the remix from the QE soundtrack, the original one)

Those are some very danceable songs, and all are suitable for any age (no naughty lyrics or cuss words).

Anime/Japanese songs:
"Evolution (Law is Q Mix)" by Ayumi Hamasaki
"Sana Molette ne Ente (B.L.T. Sandwich Style)" by Sana (downtempo)
"Summer Planet No. 1 '98 Selection" by Two-Mix
"First Love" by Utada Hikaru (more downtempo)
"Sugar Baby Love (Exciting Cute Version" from Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar
"Party Night (Hyper Parapara)" from Di Gi Charat
"C'est la Vie ~ Watashi no Naka no Koi suru Bunbun" from the live-action Sailor Moon

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Can't stop the desu.

Oh, DDR songs.

Absolute
.59
B4U
Dynamite Rave
I'm Alive
Look to the Sky
Matsuri Japan (K.O.G. Mix)
My Summer Love (required!)

I haven't played DDR in a while so I forget if there's any other good songs.  I'll go through lists though.

Please for the love of god, don't play any Britney Spears et. all music.  Let's have something enjoyable.  ;~;

I like dance and hip-hop.
At least one Beastie Boy song, please? Even non-rap fans seem to enjoy them.

ps Thank you for doing this work and taking this survey!

My vote goes for no rap at all, no country, and very little techno since I don't think "no techno" will fly.

Lots of anime music would be good, and very few of the songs that everybody danced to in high school (whenever that may have been).

"Everyone Danced to in High School".
Ha ha ha ha!

You know how many of my anime friends went to dances in high school?!?
Very few.

Anyway I think that the usual dance/pop/hip hop stuff is ine but should definitely be balanced with anime and DDR songs. Last years dance party sounded fine to me!

The only songs I'd love to hear is stuff by Shonen Knife. They don't have much stuff that you can dance to but Sushi Bar is a classic, as well as "I Am A Cat". Also, Budget Girls and Cibo Mato would be cool.

I'm not going to dare say to keep anything out. songs you don't like exist so you can catch your breath!

Let's see... for DDR songs, I would recommend:
-The Korean songs (there are several but I can't think of the names)
-Maybe some of the Jazz tunes like "Long Train Runnin'" and "After the game of love" (with or without lyrics since I think some people don't like the lyrics to AGL)
-Heaven is a '57 Metalic Grey
-Candy

Please please please please don't play "It's raining men," "Somewhere over the Rainbow," or "Be in my Paradise."  (Also referred to as BIMP)  Those are my three least favorite DDR songs.

Thanks for all the input so far but keep it up.  Honestly I'm not really a country or gansta' rap fan myself but I do have quite a bit of music and really am willing to spin anything that the otaku want to hear.  Specific songs & bands work better than genre's to me as I'm going to need to hunt down the various cds to keep everything legal.  As for anime soundtrack music what do you want to hear, other than the “My Neighbor Totoro” greatest hits?  8)

I think half the music from Bebop would be good to dance to!
I also think it'd be fund to have "Dance Like You Want To Win" played at least once! Heh heh!

"Dance like you want to win" is from Neon Gen. Evangelion, right?

Oh and yet another question for Anime Soundtracks: Are Dubbed or Japanese versions better?  I have a feeling Japanese ones are easier \ cheaper to get.

Thanks & EnJoy,

The song I'm listening to right now has a nice groovy beat to it, and is probably quite dancable if you don't know the translation (which is basically about killing anyone who comes close)

It's "Black Intruder" from Digimon Tamers, and I can get a link if you want to hear it.

I think we need to stay away from the rap genre. I remember at the SakuraCon Rave Dance that people in the crowd (including myself) were yelling to play actual dance songs. It's just a really annoying kind of music and difficult to truly dance to.

Generally I would agree with you but in a limited sense.  As a guest of the forum brought up Beastie Boys can be quite shake-a-rific, and it's also tradition to play at least one C & C music factory song at a large dance event.  But these are eighties / early 90's exceptions to my usual anti-rap preference.  But I'll try to keep it as limited as possible.  After all, the pro-rap otaku's have been a bit silent on this discussion.

Jurassic 5 - What's Golden

When I went to that Nintendo shindig they had a few years ago right after the Zelda demo came out, the DJ spun that into the mix and it was such a beautiful transition.  I didn't even hear it coming, and I like Jurassic 5.
I suppose J5 is more hip-hop than rap...

Jamelia - Superstar

Liberty X - Jumpin'

I have limited experience with rap/hip-hop.  I hate rap, but well-done hip-hop (like J5 and Blackalicious) is nice from time to time.

Mike,

I would say japanese versions all the way.  dubbed are okay to a point, it really depends on that anime and it's presence in the US.

I agree that a lot of the Bebop soundtrack is very much danceable.  DDR tracks are always easy and danceable (obviously)... and I would have to say that no music should be excluded.  If someone wants to hear some Dogg, or some Lil' John, then by all means... they're very danceable songs.  Though, some of them would not be considered PG by any means, so we would probably limit what is being played at the dance by that.  If there is enough of a demand, we might be able to continue the dance past midnight, and after the youth are shuffled off, the music could change to a more mature nature.

FilkAeris (AJ) mentioned a while back that the sakuracon rave was a little silly because anyone can go to a rave anytime (though, there is the question of drug use at most other raves), but not everyone can go to a dance where the music played is anime/video game based.  So, I think that probably should be our primary focus.

Speaking of all this, let's get you fixed on the forum...

DJ Pretzel's Overclocked Remixes

By all means, do attempt to get permission to use some OC Remix music. I have their stuff on my general playlist - it's great.

Sandstorm by DaRude MUST be played once. It's like, a law.

How about the battle theme from Final Fantasy VII? It has a nice beat to it, and is definately popular...

Also, Ordinary World is one of my favorite songs from DDR. I'd love to hear that played... definate nice soft-techno with cool lyrics.

Thanks for the status upgrade Ryan!  I agree that I should stay with the Japanese versions as much as possible, though if anyones "gots ta" hear a son in Engrish I'd like to hear from them.  And if someone needs some hard core PG rated dogg {with the 2 g's cause he's good like that} let me know, I have no problem spinning anything, I just need to know before a week before the con.

I soooooooo agree with FilkAeris.  Anyone can go to a rave and hear techno, hip hop, or any other type of dance music.  But how many people get to grind it hearing the cowboy bebops greatest hits?

Kumori Con "Owns"...{add apropriate hand gesture here.}

I will definitely bring the two techno national anthems to Kumori Con.  Darude's Sandstorm as well as New Order's Confusion (pump-panel reconstruction mix) from the blade soundtrack.

I need to pursue some old school video game remixes with a passion, it really is a must.  I hope to have a few beat matched sets with fades into specific request songs for those "I gots to have it now" otakus.

There are four domestically-produced CDs that I can think of that has a lot of music that would be good for con dances and suchlike:

- Project Majestic Mix: It's all remixes of Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy)'s music, and some of it is quite "dance-able"
- Squaredance: A, uh... dance/techno/trance/whatever CD with Squaresoft remixes =D;;
- Time & Space: Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono series?)'s stuff =D
- The Very Best of Sega: A lot of this is similar to Squaredance stuff (so I've heard), and it's all Sega music.

The first two are by KFSS; the latter two are by One-Up Studios.  It's all video game music (versus anime, I know), and I haven't heard SD or T&S personally, but I own the gold version of PMM and TVBoS and can vouch for their shininess =D  I was very active on the message boards for KFSS, and everyone was like "so much techno~ .__.;" for SquareDance, at least.  If you'd like, I can go through and find which tracks, specifically, sound like they'd work (if I'm to use last-year's Fanime and KumoriCon track selections as a guideline).

The tracks I think would be good to dance to are, Stamina Rose, Inner Universe, and Run Rabbit Junk.

My personal favorites are Stamina Rose,  Fish Silent Cruise, and Some Other Time.

On another note, my friend is a dj and he would be willing to spin if you want.

our own snakeling is probably going to do the spinning... but who knows, he might be up for some help.

have your friend contact volunteer@kumoricon.org to volunteer, and have him mention he's interested in dj-ing... we'll get him in touch with Snakeling/Mike.

Or he could come on here and post... but make sure he gets intouch with volunteer first... we need to make sure people get accounted for and credit for any work they do for the con.

Staze\Ryan is right on the application process.  I wouldn't mind a couple of 'guest' DJs.  Though the dance night really has to have the right flow, remain professional, PG(13?) Rated (at least until 1am), and above all legal.  The right DJ’s are very important to this.  At a minimum the DJ’s would need to own original legal copies of all music spun, not MP3’s or burned CDs. And be able to cater to our diverse crowd and their whims.  In addition 'guest' DJs would need to submit some sort sample\references set and be able\willing to use professional CD players and not vinyl to mix with.  I would also prefer someone who can “beat match” over those who fade.  Overall, I'm trying to avoid a “live juke box” feeling to the DJ stand and am just trying to make this the most kick @$$ show ever.

Sorry if this sounds sort of gruff I have five big shows this month and am tired out of my mind.  But if your interested please let us know in the volunteers section and our techie guru’s will let me know and we’ll talk.  Oh and if you’ve got more stars than me and think I’m overstepping my bounds let me know and I’ll consider myself properly chastised.

Thanks
The Lighting Snake

Arrrrggg! I recently tried to purchase the Project majestic mix and the squaredance but was not able to find a company that had one for sale.  It seems they are limited edition turkeys that I can't track down.  If you find a place I can buy them from let me know...

I LIKE TO MOVE IT MOVE IT!  I LIKE TO MOVE IT MOVE IT!

Lol.

More songs:
Stuff from THE PILLOWS:
Ride on Shooting Star
Rush
...and all the other songs I forgot the names of by them.

Stuff from S.H.E. (I think that's the band that did the music for Guilty Gear XX)

Definitely need the Evolution by Ayumi Hamasaki.  There is a lot more I could suggest, but the last one will be YATTA!  We need yatta, it is a must!  I am actually gonna do a small performance of yatta with a couple of my friends there :).

I'm pretty sure you can get both through AnimeNation.  I'm also pretty sure you can get 'em through the KFSS music page.  Let me know if you can't.  I could have sworn you could, but you know... I'm sort of out of the loop these days ^^;;

I dunno about Squaredance (I STILL haven't bought it myself.  BAD Xella, this is what you get for being all angsty about making a fool of yourself on the PMM message boards all those years ago ><;;), but I know the original PMM:ATtNU (I love that acronym XD;;) had three versions: Gold (pre-order only), Silver (limited quantities available), and Regular.  Of those, I only DON'T have the regular one because every time I go to AN, they've got the silver in stock still and I want the REGULAR, dangit, not another silver XD;;

I was quite a big KFSS studios fan in my day o_o; Queen of the boards there, I was... 'til about the fifth or six time they had to reinstall or switched software and a) went to EZ board for like... a couple months (which I couldn't view, being on an old Mac at the time, and a new Mac now), and b) I made quite the fool of myself on the boards.  They didn't care that much, but I slunk away in shame and still have problems visiting for more than a couple days at a time ^^;

PMM Silver, at least, was released in the early part of middle-2002 =D  I never let my copies out of the house (too precious and valuable), but if anyone wants, I'll bring 'em with me to KumoriCon =3  Or at least, one of them (the gold, since that's got the extra CD of music)

It doesn't matter whether you win or squelch, but how you play the tuba.

Dude, someone totally needs to make Rocky Horror Anime Show.
I can totally picture so many of the songs and characters in the anime style.

PLEASE tell me this is being done by someone!
I mean, it'd be cool if it was the exact same soundtrack as the movie with anime on the visual track. In fact that'd probably be BETTER!
