SSBM Crew Tournament 2006 ~UPDATED~
« on: March 29, 2006, 10:06:24 pm »
~SSBM CREW TOURNAMENT UPDATE!~

The SSBM Crew Tournament will begin at 8:30pm on Friday September 1st near the Lobby.  But, be there around 8:15pm so we can assign the crews.

RULES
- 1 vs 1
- 5 stock
- No time limit
- No items
- Banned Stages (tentative): Hyrule, Termina, Brinstar, Brinstar Depths, Yoshi 64, Icicle Mtn., Flatzone, Big Blue

-Teams decided randomly
-Character change not allowed inbetween matches
-Captains decide the order of the teams
-Crews with five members get four lives per member. In the case a crew has only four members, each member gets five stocks instead of four

The winner after each round needs to suicide until you have the same amount of stocks you had at the end of the previous match.

*Crew Leaders: Heaven, D-Man, Fevenis

I'm assuming we will have twenty people for this, so that is four crews.  I will assign the best SSBM players as Crew Leaders.  The other four people will draw poker chips from the tin can to determine which crew they are on.

For those who don't know what this is, it is a Super Smash Brothers Melee tournament put on just for fun the night before the convention.  We have crews (or teams) fighting against other crews.  What we did last year was hook up a TV outside the console gaming room and hooked a Gamecube up to it w/ SSBM.  We then had one person from a crew (composed of four or five people) battle out 1v1 against a person from another crew.  We organized our own little fun crew tournament that way.

Last year was fun for the crew tournament.  It was a great way to meet some fellow Smashers and new friends.

I'll be the captain for my crew.  So far I don't have a crew formed.  Shall we start discussing the crew tournament?  I'm curious to see how many people are interested in it this year.

(I'm hoping one of the regulars will post the rules and stuff for the crew tournament, cus I'm a little lazy right now)-

Providing that I am not dead and have the gaming room already set up I would not mind joining in as well.  It is one of the few times that I get to play a game durring the con.  >_<

Nice XD.  I hope to have at least four crews.  So, we'll need at least 20 people for the SSBM Crew Tournament.

Thanks for your guys' participation. I'm surprised the regulars haven't posted yet.

I'm posting, you happy?  Maybe I can be on a random crew again and lead them to victory? :D

I hope the rules get hammered out before the con.  It would be a shame if it was the same as Sakuracon

Yeah, for the actual SSBM Tournament.  I'll probably get on the Gaming Coordinator's case about that.

As for the SSBM Crew Tournament, should we post some rules?

Yeah, that'd be a good thing.  We don't wanna have to spend a bunch of time setting up rules while we could be playing.  So, yeah.  Look up some of the rules on Smashboards.com.  Those are the best rules for tourney play.

Alright, I found a thread somewhere that discussed the rules used at PAX for their SSBM tournament.  I'm going to tweak those a bit, so how does this sound:

- 1 vs 1
- 4 stock
- No time limit
- No items
- Banned Stages (tentative): Hyrule, Termina, Brinstar, Brinstar Depths, Yoshi 64, Icicle Mtn., Flatzone, Big Blue

---------------------------------------------------

-Teams decided randomly.
-Character change not allowed inbetween matches.
-Captains decide the order of the teams.
-Crews with five members get four lives per member. In the case a crew only has four members, each member gets five lives.
-Suicide till you have the amount of lives you had in the previous match.

Anything I should add or change anything else?

Yeah, random crews sound fun.
You can't change your character inbetween matches.  Captains decide the order of the teams.  If a crew has four members, each member gets five lives, and if the crew has five members, they each get four lives.
Um...suicide till you have the amount of lives you had in the previous match.  You guys that played last year should remember.
Also, the other samus stage should be banned...cuzz that one just sucks.  All samus levels = lot's of stage interferance...which is fun in a free for all, but so are items, but not for tournaments.

I'm all for randoms!!
Hm...

Count me in for sure. I have a friend that is gonna show up too...so just list him as "Lime's friend" or something :P

I think the tentative list of rules sounds awesome so far...I actually like the idea of just doing random crews this time.

I can't believe it's already been a whole year since last kumoricon...it seems like just the other day we were sitting around the game room playin smash all day XD

I didn't get to go to sakuracon this year, but from the sounds of it, they kinda joked up the tournament...just like the previous year

Definitely looking forward to smashing with you guys again :D

The crews this year will be randomly drawn.  I am putting numbered poker chips in a can, and then everyone will draw.  Those who draw poker chips numbered 1-5 will be a crew, 6-10 will be a crew, etc.

Alright!  We are at ten people, but we need more!  I'm hoping to see at least 20.  Everyone, spread the word about the SSBM Crew tournament.  Have your Kumoricon friends post in this thread if they are interested! XD

Being "terrible" at something shouldn't stop one from participating and enjoying themselves, XD.

But I will do something.  Since crews will be decided from poker chips randomly, if all the people who say they aren't good at this game end up being in the same crew, I'll do some rearranging.

The crew tournament will start around 8:15pm, but I'd like everyone there at 8:00pm.  It is on the night before the convention, which is Friday night.  There are no conflicts with this Crew Tournament, it is something I put on for fun the night before the convention.  Therefore, it doesn't interfere with any events, and that includes the Idol Contest (this Crew Tournament is different from the actual Kumoricon SSBM Tournament).

Can you still make it to the Crew Tournament on that Friday night?

Gah sorry, I really need to learn how to read. Good job on answering my question in your first post!

You can count me and possibly another in. If needed, I can actually bring my TV (nothing big, just a 27") since I live pretty close and I have a decent size car (yay, perks of adulthood). I don't have a gamecube, though I do have a friend with one that also has SSBM. It's probably broken though, knowing him.

I also suggest that you let people volunteer to be crew captains. It would make sense to have the most skilled players doing that probably? Also, that way you automatically spread the best players out among the teams. Just an idea though.

edit: lol negima, I'm a fox player. But instead of really really good, I'm really bad ><.

That's a good idea, Aaero.  Thanks for suggesting it.  I'll modify the rules.

I have a Gamecube that I am bringing with Super Smash Brothers Melee.  Unfortunately, I only have one controller, and my memory card was lost.  I'll try to get my friend's memory card for this.

27" in is pretty big in this case, in my opinion.  But, that would be great if you could bring it along.  What time are you arriving at the Red Lion Inn?  I could help you with that.

@Negima

lol, sorry Negima, but I am a main Fox player. XD

I have a friend that wants to join: Heckler. On a related note, he and I will probably practice on Thursday nights from 9:30 - 11:30. If anyone, for some reason, wanted to join. I live right in the intersection of Tigard, Beaverton, and Portland.

I just thought of this and thought I should post it here.

If we have time and if others are up to it, what if after the first tournament we had another crew tournament (or something) where we don't get to pick our characters?  The chip numbers could stand for different fighters (ex: #1 is Zelda, #2 is Mr. Game and Watch, etc.) and then we drew again to figure out crew teams.  That way most players would have to fight with a character they aren't used to like someone who's used to Bowser suddenly gets Pichu.  Again, just thought I should throw this idea out there.

I don't mind that players use Fox, I just hate the character.

Just so you know why I don't like them, it's due to lots of agonizing experiences where they will give me 100% or more damage in what feels like 10 second and they've hogged the edges a lot.  And then there's the taunts.

I brought the TV last year...

What a pain :?

I live in gresham AND I didn't even have a hotel for the night before the con. It was still alot of fun though :P

I would offer to be a crew leader, but I haven't been playing smash that much recently, so i'm sure my skill has been somewhat reduced.

So i'll be humble for right now.

I dunno if you'll catch my response, but I suggest using Mario against people who use Fox. When they do that zippy flash attack move, use Mario's cape. Actually, using Mario's cape against almost all of Fox's moves are enough to really mess with a player who uses him. ^_^

You don't say.

I didn't know that and one of my usual characters happens to be Mario.  Now I'm trying to decide if I should use Mario or my other regular character.

Heh, yeah, Mario can be a pain for Fox.  The cape is good for edge guarding, and his upward throw can be chained for heavy character (like Fox) when they are at low percentages.  I think Dman did a upward throw to me a few times, then an up smash.

This sounds like a really cool idea! I might be able to make it there, it would depend on my work schedule, if I closed that night I wouldnt be able to make it.

Count me in!  It sounds like a blast!

Awesome Zennus.  Keep me posted on that.

Alright, so, I'll be in my Akito Sohma cosplay on September 1st, and I'll probably have a sign with me that says "SSBM CREW TOURNY." I'll probably be lounging in one of the chairs in the lobby with my laptop, with the sign against the chair.

Hey, I'm still not on the list. Neither is the friend I'm bringing. Be honest, is it because my avatar is just a little too girly? Or is it because you fear my waveshining skills?

Anyway, I'm still bringing a TV, so between lime and I it should be covered.

And I can bring up an extra controller if needed.  I use one of the smaller ones.

Freakin' bottle deposit costs.  I never noticed it the price would go up THAT much for a 24-pack.

Sorry guys, I was only able to buy one 24-pack of Dr. Pepper.  It was going to be one 24-pack of DP and one 24-pack of Sierra Mist, but...the Slaveway won this battle with that cap deposit stuff.

I hope 24 is enough X_X

Ha...i'm getting excited K-con is so close now...and playing a little competitive Smash is gonna be great :D

So far, it looks like we're gonna have waaay more people for the crew tournament this year than we did last year...which is awesome. I think we should make a habit of this every year.

Mr. Dane, is there anything you still need people to bring? My brother and I will have our own controllers, of course, but we may be able to snag our GCN if needed. BUT, our SSBM disc is kinda screwed up, and likes to crash in the middle of the game, so I wouldn't volunteer it. x_x;

And! Do you need any more crew leaders? You only have 3, and you have nearly 30 people! I volunteer if you don't mind allowing someone you only know from Myspace... xD
Though I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem finding other leaders.

@SephiChan

If you think you have what it takes to be a crew leader, just tell me in person on Friday so I know who you are, and I'll make you so. XD

Alright, so far I am bringing:

1x 24-pack Dr. Pepper
1x Gamecube
1x SSBM
1x A/V Cord
1x Power Cord

I have no controllers that I can bring, so I am really relying on everyone else for that.  I hope there is eight or more.

Oh yeah, and this thing is TOTALLY annual.  I always make it to Kumoricon, no matter what.  So long as I am their, these SSBM Crew Tournaments shall continue. XD XD XD

xD Not a problem. Couldn't really expect you to recognise a forum name you'd probably never known.

But! Try to get someone to bring a copy of SSBM. Or, I can try to talk my brother into buying a new copy--he gets a discount at the Nintendo store, so he was thinking about it anyway. xx; Tourny would go much more smoothly with 2 games.

I'll bring a controller.  I'd bring 2 but for the other one it's Z button has a tendency to stick.  Trust me, it's very annoying when unintentionally trying to grab someone when they're on the other side of the field.

It sounds like we'll have some extra game discs.

If you're bringing stuff I'd suggest you label it in some way, since it's easy for things to get lost or for there to be some disorganization, even at small gatherings like this. And by lost, I don't mean stolen. I literally mean lost, or at least taken but genuinely by accident (at least, I prefer to believe it's genuine). If there's like 20 controllers, it might be hard to remember exactly which ones are yours.

I won't be labeling my TV though, heh. If someone accidentally takes that...well, they'll have a hard time convincing me it was an accident.

Aaero, I know exactly what you mean. Things get moved, misplaced, etc.

Anyway! Good news. I can bring my GCN. Probably just that, memory card, and controllers. If someone else has a mem card, it'd be great, because I don't know which of our cards has the most SSBM data on it.

Well, I can bring a memory card if that's what we need.  I'll also bring my roommates copy of the game as well.  Hopefully, everybody that's coming to the crew battle will pick up their pre-reg badges early, so nobody has to go to bed early to get in line early Saturday morning:)

All that is really needed is all levels unlocked and all characters unlocked.  I already have the data prepped on the memory card I obtained.  My only concern is the levels.  It's going to be set on Random, and I banned the majority of stages.
