I'm not sure what they wanted it for might have been the theater.  Aint all princess gowns all the same.   Lurking on Cosplay Lab I see gowns that would rivel any for the big city or university theaters

weeeeell, sca stuff has to be made of period acurate materials, leather, wools, linen (assuming your doing a sca char based in europe) and thats about it...some velvets and a little cotton, but that would be for very fancy people.

and well..cosplay stuff can be made out of whatever the hell you want.

yeah they want the sca stuff to be period accurate but there is a lot of duct tape and plastic at a tournement.    I was thinking more of some cosplay outfits I have seen of disney princesses and such.  As close to the real thing as you would see at an event or on stage.   I think it may be a few more weeks before i'm making a ball gown with petty coats.  If only some one wanted to go as Bell as a beast hunting Xena warriour women then I could help with that.

Question!

I don't so much need costuming as I do armor props such as the ones found here:

http://www.dragon-tear.net/images/bof2/BoF2_ryu2.jpg

Would the knee pads, shoulder strap/chest plate, Boot tops, and hip armor be hard to ask of anyone? Or very expensive? Those are the only things we're having troubles with =).

I can't see anyone from the SCA referring to something they wanted to commission as a "princess gown." For starters, the word "gown" refers to a type of clothing which is on the very tail end of what would be considered "period," so you won't see it often in the SCA (the greater the span of history in which something appeared, the more often you see it in the SCA). Secondly, gowns are generally intended to be worn in very clean indoor quarters, making them very impractical for outdoor events, and most SCA events are outdoors.

Lastly, Prince and Princess are titles that are earned in the SCA (by winning a fighting tournament, in fact), and the people who end up in those positions do plenty more than play dress-up. Besides, most custom jobs are commissioned within the SCA, since major events usually have numerous clothing merchants present who specialize in SCA garb.

Anyway, pinkrandomattack, I'm glad to hear of another up-and-coming costumer, and I'd like to know more about what you do. :) Do you have examples of previous costumes you've made, and about how much they would have cost if you were to make them again on commission? As I'm sure you know, different costumers vary in their rates of labor, and in the quality/expense of the materials they insist on using...

Also, how long does it usually take you to finish a costume (choose an example)?

yeah i know all that stuff about the SCA thing, ive been trying to go to a newbie meeting here in portland but the last time i went to the "chatalanes" house there was no one there, so me and my friends just kinda stood outside confused for a while.

i have a profile on cosplaylab.com and it had picing for the stuff that ive done, howevere the qulity of the pictures is either kinda bad or nonexsistant, i made 13 costumes for this past sakura con and i dont have good pictures of any cause my sister told me she was going to do a good job (and they are all blurry as hell, im waiting for the people who i made them for to send me copies if they have god ones)

i work really fast actually i can finnish a dress in a night of work usually a costume takes me about a week though since im in school right now and have lots of either being in school or homework to do. I also work at Glass Alchemy ( an art glass manufacturer here in portland) a couple days a week packing, yesterday they started me on the torch! i melted
things...

i think the fastest i finished a whole costume was the Bridget (guilty gear) that minus the shoes only took me probably 5 hours total to do.

i guess i do have a few good pictures though

i didnt do the prince there, and my boyfirend refuses to put down his stick. obviously is care of cosplay.com

i did the blue (and actually male)bridget, i "helped" with the baiken, she says help, i call it free labor

The one time a caller asked about a princess gown I figured it was for a theater or a costume party, I did not get any more details as I had no one to recommend they call (hint cosplay princess gown makers in Eugene).  The other calls for Medieval Gowns or an “A dress like in a Fairy Tail” might have been for a SCA event or the Ren Fair for a non-member.  Most of my leather accesories have been for one time ren fair goers.   I have not gotten much work from SCA members as they tend to want to make their own and an older member shows them how.   I went to one SCA event and there were several ladies in real nice kirtle gowns much fancier than the other more common working or day ware garments.  And there were ladies in leather Xena outfits

I can see you went to sakuracon pinkrandomattack.  I'll take it that's from '06.  I was there too, and this is what scares me.  Hopefully there won't be AS many naruto cosplayers as at sakuracon.  I couldn't walk 5 feet without seeing someone from naruto, normall a sasuke, sakura, naruto, or kakashi.  Itachis somewhere and I saw 1 ino, 2 tsunades, and 1 3rd hokage.  Well hopefully the amount will be less at kumoricon, but if not, oh well, naruto's an awesome anime ^^ (japanese version).

lol, glad you take interest in the anime somewhat, because it's a known fact that they'll probably end up being the majority, as usual.

Heh, thanks, but not really... ^^ Just that I've been in the SCA for 10 years. Many SCA members have been doing it for as long as 30 or 40 years, and they generally like to talk at length about period history, especially after a few drinks. ;) Hanging around them is sometimes like hearing an impromptu college lecture. Most of them would make me look like a dunce in comparison.

I suppose sometimes they use the word "gown," but I've rarely heard it. The word "dress" is usually more appropriate. I suppose it would be better to ask my sister about it, since she's taken more medieval studies classes than me...
