Anime societies for the Eugene/Springfield area
« on: December 16, 2005, 05:16:15 am »
I recently ran into Wuntvor (that's his forum username, anyway) at a local mall, and he mentioned that he's been having anime viewings at his house from time to time. I asked him whatever happened to TUNAC (the University of Oregon anime club), and he said that it was effectively disbanded.

This made me sad, not so much because I was going to meetings at all, but because ever since I and my college mates gradually started to graduate and/or move on to other things, we rarely get together just to sit down and watch anime. :? Apparently, this isn't to say that we don't watch anime anymore. People just tend to do it on their own. :P Most of them simply download fansubs and watch them on their computers when they feel like it.

This is all nice and convenient, but it seems a bit too "otaku" for me. In this case I'm using the original Japanese meaning of the word otaku: "doesn't get out much." Perhaps it's because I never watch cable in my spare time, but I don't like to watch anime alone. I find that to be so much more boring. ;)

Is there anyone in the Eugene/Springfield area who is itching for an anime viewing group? I'm considering an attempt at a revival, whether it be a formal weekly gathering or an "open house" or two in the area. I already know some of the potential obstacles to such an endeavor, but I'd like to hear what other locals think before inadvertently shooting down their ideas. Whaddaya say?

(Note: Yes, I know that there are probably some existing anime viewing groups, including Wuntvor's.
That's part of what I'm asking: I want to find out how much publicity such groups are getting, as they stand now.)

Really.... I didn't expect anyone would consider posting in that forum, considering it's intended for con activities. I guess it's related. And perhaps I did see that topic, and just forgot about it...

...Oh well. The point of this topic is that I wanted to try something else. :) For one thing, groups made solely for viewing anime tend to be a little lacking in the socialization department. I'd much prefer the type of atmosphere that could be found at the last Kumori Con staff retreat.  Hence the "Open House" idea.

Yeah the club at ECC was mostly watch and go, not a lot of Geek talk after the show and most folks did not show up early to get in some nerd chat before the show.  Eugene needs some sort of Mini cons or gatherings anime related.  I also want to see more stuff for nerds over 30 (who aint the wack-a-doodle kind that think D&D or vampire is real)  I allready have had RPG games and War Games at my shop but dont have a TV here yet and it is a mess and dangerious and cold right now.

If I was rich I would open a night club for nerds,  All the tables would look like R2D2 with the Serving tray from ROTJ and all the waitresses wold be dressed in ST:TOS uniforms.  The tv would only show the Sci Fi channel and Cartoon network and anime and there would be rooms for RPG and LAN games

Oh, you run a shop? Which shop might that be? :)

Hmmm, mini-con... makes me wonder if GameEx is still running annually.

Anyway, yeah, I've always wanted a little bit of a chance to chat and get to know eachother at viewings. Otherwise, all they provide is a means to watch fansubbed anime, which isn't a very valuable service since it's getting easier and easier to get fansubbed (or even commercial) anime on your own. :P

Meeting at somebody's house is quite fun, but doing only that sorta destroys the "doorway" for potential new members.

It's too bad that anime viewing isn't something that could be held at a more public place. My sister's National Novel Writing group met at the Starbucks near campus; that worked great. :P

My Shop/My store is my leather repair shop ware I do some leather costume stuff.  The only games and toys hear are my own. (Follow my sig)

Gamex:  I keep checking out the U of O game club web page but they never update.  I found out about the last Gamex from a flyer at ECC the day it was on.  I went there and I found the right place, a row of meeting rooms that had flyers for Game x taped to the windows.  It was the right day/time but no one was there.  The notes said it went to 11Pm and I was there at about 5PM, maybe they were out for snacks.  Also the U of O game club president (Unicycle Guy) comes to some of our minis games at ECC and told me the day and time for the weekly meetings and I checked twice but no one was there. I think it was Fridays in the coffee shop in the basement of the library.

The guys I have had over for War Games had posted a note at ECC and they also attend RJ's Game day which is a guy who has games one Saturday a month at his house but it's when I work.
