Favorite Manga?
« on: May 26, 2004, 05:23:06 pm »
I figured since there was a forum for anime, dubbed, and whatnot, I thought I should start one asking about manga.  Plus I'm more of a manga reader than anime watcher (recently anyway).
Tell us what your favorite manga series is, make comments about it, or maybe ask about a series you're curious about in case someone else is a fan of it.  You can also give Japanese titles.

My favorite manga series are:
Love Hina
Mahou Sensei Negima (where I got my screen name)
Chrno Crusade (Japanese)
D.N.Angel
Asagiri no Miko (Japanese: "Shrine Maiden of the Morning Mist")

Resevoir Chronicles Tsubasa- CLAMP's new manga, I've been waiting FOREVER for it to be relased and I finally got Volume 1! I'm so happy! The story and the art is really good.

WISH - It's sort of weird, but I like the story. It's sweet, but it made me cry.

Ranma 1/2 - Just for kicks. It's insane.

Inu-Yasha: A Feudal Fairy Tale - The manga is so much betetr than the anime.

Mars - Gotta love Teen Angst.  The architecture is very neatly done.  Its sad how little recognition this lil' series gets.

Inu Yasha - There's so much more fluff in the Manga, because they don't have to worry about tyring to fit it into a half an hour block.  The relationships are so cute, I enjoy the fact that they take a bit longer to develop them there.

Chobits - The costumes are adoreable in this and incredibly well drawn.  I love it because the story-line is cute and the artwork keeps you coming back.  It's also less singsongy than the Anime, which regardless is postitively adoreable.

Shutterbox - Another with great artwork.  Love the fantasy.

I think the best thing about Manga vs. Anime is the fact that you can pack it along with you, and enjoy it anywhere.  Also am more of a Manga fan than an anime fan.....Woot!

I love the Pokemon manga by Kagemaru Himeno, probably because I'm a huge geek for the cards. See, this manga takes a picture from a card and comes up with a story for it (my god, the story for the Jungle-set Persian is just plain creepy...gives me shivers even now)

Okay, let's see if I can summarize the story so far....
Daisuke Niwa is part of a family that has a "condition" that causes him to transform into Dark, the legendary Phantom Thief (his grandfather was once Dark as well).  This condition happens whenever Daisuke longs for the one he loves which means it can happen at anytime and anywhere if he isn't careful.  The only way to stop this from happening is if the one he loves returns the same feeling of love.  Enter the Harada twins, Riku and Risa, and a large love triangle.  (As of book 1) Daisuke loves Risa, Risa loves Dark, Dark loves Riku, Riku may be curious about Daisuke, and Riku thinks Dark is a pervert.  Meanwhile, Satoshi, a young detective in Daisuke's class, is obsessed with one day catching Dark.
It's a good series.  It has humor, romance, a little bit of action, and a little bit of drama.  I'd recommend it.

Let me see now my top ten would be...

well Inu-Yasha is a given so I'm not including it.

King of Bandits Jing
I love both the manga and the anime though they are pretty different in a couple of places and there is a second manga series that will be coming out this fall which I fully intend to read.

Fruits Basket
WAY better than the anime by virtue of the story continuing much farther.  The manga gets much more serious and you're not really sure if Shigure is a good guy or not.

DNAngel
Really good, and beautifully drawn can't wait to see where it's going.

Angel Sanctuary
Originally fell in love with the anime which is awsome but again the manga goes much much farther.  It's really edgy and it has some pretty morally wrong stuff going on so beware but I think it's an awsome story.

Les Bijoux
It's a pretty interesting idea I really like premis of the story so far.  I'm also pretty fond of the character and scene designs as well.

Kare Kano
well I love the manga it goes much farther than the anime.  I have to say that I can understand why she didn't want to do a second season of the anime because it was too repetitive and almost like reading the manga.  It has alot of still frames and printed dialogue which can kinda get annoying.

Kodomo no Omocha
I've only seen about half of the anime but it was pretty good though it too diverges from the manga.  It's a good story though I think that the ending had a real rushed feeling to it.

Angelic Layer
Really cute neet idea, the characters are very interesting and so is the angel concept.  I haven't seen the anime for this put I plan to in the near future.

Megatoyo
Though I don't suppose that this is technicly a manga it's worth mention.  It's a web comic by Fred Gallhager which is also being published that is absolutely hilarious I highly recomend checking it out.

Full Metal Panic
I really like both the manga and the anime though the anime is organised with all the serious episodes in the first season and the ligh-hearted in the second.

Now these aren't in any particular order or anything.  But they are all pretty good in my opinion.

*ponder* eeeemm...

Naruto - Cute style of art,  great characters and character developement, and ninjas. That can't be beat.

Chobits - Cute style, interesting plot, cuuuuuuuuuute Chii, very cute chii ^^ and ish funny.

Samurai Deeper Kyo - Eeeeeevil, yet strangely funny. ^^

Full Moon Wo Sagashite - It's cute and sweet. And Meroko turns into a surly looking bunny. ^^

King of Bandit Jing - =D JIIIIINNGG!!

Kare Kano - Again, cute and sweet. Yukino is a little annoying, but yah kinda realize shes a lot like all of us. o_O; It's disconcerting.

Megatokyo - XD wah.

Yeah. Can't think of anymore 'favourites' off the top of my head. o.o Wssssh!

I love Yami no Matsuei.  I love Muraki.   XD No manga could ever change my favorite~!

Yes... I am a rabid Yugioh fan.  At least of the manga and the elusive 1st season of anime...

And I'm obsessive about Naruto.

It's going to sound so traiterous from me, but I think Saiyuki has been edged out of its spot as my favourite manga =D;;

Replaced by nothing less than Detective Conan X);; Oh man, I'm so easily led astray X);

Saiyuki's still second, though, and Slayers is third.  Dragon Knights is probably fourth, if we don't give any thought to webcomics as manga =D;;

Gunsmith Cats is fantastic. Sonoda is a master of this art form but because of his subject matter is rarely recognized as such. Other books I dig:

Blade of the Immortal: absoluty brilliant in every way

Planetes: a wonderful bit of speculative fiction.

Battle Royale: Brutal and nasty. Better then both the novel and the film

Azu Manga Daioh: Great fun. Both clever and subtle

Just about anything by CLAMP is lilkely to have me weeping openly by the end. I adored Wish and was weeping for hours at the end of Magic Knight rayearth.

I enjoyed the marmalade boy manga but never got to finish it.

I want to read more mnga than i actually get to read.

Ok, if I hard to narrow it down to two series, I'd go with Bastard!! and Great Teacher Onizuka.

What can I really say?

Dark Schneider is the freakin' man. I mean, come on, his dark wizard magic is cool too, my favorite spell is Venom, so far. Oh, and the kingdom of Metallicana? Metallica! My favorite band gets mad respect in that Manga (Even though its technically MetaRikana, which is the japanese spelling and such).

About G.T.O., I just find it so good. Its comical, its serious, and it makes such good points. If I had to pick one favorite manga, G.T.O. would be it.

Okay back onto topic(gasp!) I just started reading XXXHolic from Clamp and it's pretty entertaining, all these anime references just worked in in little places(like the wand from carcaptors just sitting around in a barrel) and I think they were talking about one of the priests from X, said he had a sister issue. Check it out if you can.

Tokyo Mew Mew, Maison Ikkoku,  The Adventures of Lum- Urusei Yatsura, Kill Me, Kiss Me,  Girl got Game, Peach Girl...

I know--Im such a girl...but I think action mangas are lame.  I prefer the more rough stuff animated.  The dramas are better in manga though.
