Prop Weapon Policy?
« on: July 07, 2014, 12:03:49 pm »
I'm totally new here and all, and after getting back from Anime Expo I was wondering what sort of prop weapon policy there was at Kumoricon, if any?

AX had me glue the barrel, magazine and bolt of my airsoft gun, and turned my friends down completely because it was half metal. Is this con going to have draconian prop weapon rules like AX did?

Or I guess I'm just wondering what they are in general.

If you go to https://www.kumoricon.org/policies and search for Props, Weapons, and Replicas (in particular the subsection on Prop Requirements), it should have all the information you need.

If you have prop / peace-bonding questions that aren't covered, the people at operations@kumoricon.org will be able to help.
This is my serious voice. Otherwise, I'm just another anime fan, not a moderator.

Pulled that directly directly from the policy page.  This is a pretty standard rule,  I don't think I've been to a con that had rules much different from that.

I have a related question: would I be allowed to bring a slingshot? It's technically a functioning projectile but I won't have ammo.
Kumoricon 2014 tentative lineup:
Day 1: Yumichika Ayasegawa (Bleach)
Day 2: Flamenco Jolteon (Pokemon)
Day 3: Fujisake Yuusuke/Bossun (Sket Dance)
Day 4: Superbi Squalo (Katekyo Hitman Reborn)

Quite literally anything you pick up off the ground can be slingshot ammo. Don't bet on being allowed to have it unless it can't be fired.

I don't know about slingshots, you can ask a staff member about the specifics.

Try e-mailing this address, they know about rules and such (or they'll direct you to a specialist): policies@kumoricn.org.

As for guns, I prefer to use cap guns instead of air soft. Primarily because I can just remove the bullets, remove the trigger altogether and glue down the barrel so nothing fires. Cap guns are cheap plastic toys and are easier to censor and pass through the prop check. You can go on Amazon and find a variety of styles and use those with your cosplays. Also, it really helps make things easier if you buy cap guns that have the orange tips on the end - which prove that they're plugged or fake, and are safe.

Trust me, cap guns look just as nice as air soft; so don't worry about walking around with some cheap blue thing that makes your pictures look bad.

As for swords and staffs, so long as they're not sharp or too heavy, they should be okay - just let them look at it and judge if it's safe so they can peace tie it.  :)

Also, and this is very important, you MUST bring your weapon props to the table every single day that you plan to carry them with you in the con area. Prop checkers at the table are required to re-check all weapons to make sure they're still safe and haven't been modified to fire or anything. Each day, there's a new colored peace tie being tied to props. So, Day 1 could be blue peace ties and Day 2 could be green ties, for example. I learned this last year, and also found out that some people even collect the colored ties for fun.

That's new to me. I have never heard or experienced anything other than peace bond once for the weekend. Even last year I had a giant sword that I got peace bonded on day zero, and no one told me to get it rechcked daily. Is this a new policy? Or are you maybe thinking of a different con? This just sounds like an unrealistic and unnecessary workload for the staff to bring on themselves.

I know that Metal isn't allowed. What if your prop has three metal screws in it though? (Only the top is visible and it is screwed and glued deep into a PVC pipe).

I agree here. Last year my friend had 2 swords and a hand gun. All were fake and he got them all peace bonded on day 0 I think and never had t get them check again after that. And I've never seen or heard of a rule like that. Also your username has the title of sailor scout. It has zero indication that you are either staff or anyone in any possession to tell anyone that it's a rule. I would be more able to believe you in that being a rule if you had any title of staff at all. I see the users on here that are staff all have which staff they are under their username. I don't know if you are or not, but either way more than one person has not even been told that in the past.

EveofAbyss: I'm just relaying what the people at the table told me, so I don't know if it's a new rule or if it's even enforced. If you get a peace bond just one time, you might not be stopped and told to go to the table to get a new color; I don't know, it hasn't happened to me. But I did go to the table on Day 1 and I was told to come back the next day to get a new one. Sorry, I wish I knew more about it.

Sailor-Jeimi: No, I'm not a staffer and you are correct to take my advice at face value. Again, I'm just relaying what I was told in the hopes of helping someone else so they're prepared - I don't want anyone to be surprised or get frustrated because they didn't anticipate something and run into a problem. In my defense, I didn't necessarily say it was a rule (if I made it sound like that, I apologize) - just saying what was said to me by staffers. Also, I feel that for you to point out that I'm not a staffer or my advice shouldn't be trusted is a little too critical and I would appreciate it if you would just correct any mistake I make in the future instead of just disregarding me; because I do feel a bit attacked in this moment.

Looks like there is some misunderstandings going on here and I will do my best to clear some things up. ^__^;;

First off, you only need to just peace-bond your prop once. What staff is looking for mainly after you peace-bond your prop is that you aren't using it in a way that is dangerous as you already signed an agreement that you will carry it safely through out the event. If we notice that you don't have a peace-tie on your prop, we will simply ask you get it reviewed and peace-bonded. Thats about it really for that.

As for staff titles on the forum titles/profile, that is actually optional. I am staff this year again for Kumoricon but I did not check the box to include that on my forum account.

Hope that helps!

So I had a question specifically about some prop guns I'm bringing... Do I email the operations or policies email?

In short:
The guns I bought are designed to shoot little plastic narrow sticky things. I've painted and altered them, but I left the trigger. The 'motion' they perform is adjusting the top part of the... barrel, which would crack and deform the design I've put on them. They are painted, but their tips were covered and remain bright orange for visual safety. I'm not sure how to make them unable to move since I don't want to break them in attempting to see if they still move currently.
The only thing I can see that I can do is put a bunch of hot glue down the inner barrel to literally jam it. I don't care, but I'd like to know if that's needed before I do it?

The policy does specify filling guns with hot glue to incapacitate them. I imagine staff would require that degree of non-functionality, and that would also be safer for you in removing the risk of damaging your designs with a test trigger pull.

I thought I did read that they needed to be full of glue but I wasn't sure since the design of motion doesn't seem to come from the barrel.

The trigger's pretty stiff. They were designed that you adjust the top half of the barrel square part forward, load the plastic sticky thing, then pull the trigger and it fires? It required several things to work. I really don't recall because I couldn't get them to fire the doo-hickey toy anyway.
They were just 3$ guns from Fred Meyer near the cap guns, but I guess they were supposed to work more like nerf's.

Well I am sorry.
It did come accross as if you were saying it's a rule the way you put it. You didn't say anything to make it sound otherwise. The way you wrote it, it looked like you just read it off somewhere like the others did, which you didn't. If it was something like " I was told last by a staff member year blah blah blah this and that rule" then that's different, but you answered it as if you were telling them "this is how it is", when in fact it isn't. The only reason I brought up the staff thing was to explain why I don't believe that rule. BEcause the only way you'd be able to throw rules at us is if you were a staffer with the rules sitting in front of you (or you knew them already), so pointing out that you aren't staff was pointing out that you don't have the staff rule list or booklet or whatever, and therefore wouldn't have been able to tell us we have to do that specifically..That;s all. So I'm sorry.

Also, I guess a reason too is that I've replied with something the same. In fact, mine was obviously worded that I didn't know for sure on the rule of another question, and that I wasn't staff was stated in the post, and I said from my experience last year and blah blah blah and I got yelled at by the staff to "not act like I know the rules" when I wasn't acting that way..
