I would choose the straight gold, or see if you can get some gold fabric to make bias tape out of (rather than using ribbon). Bias tape covers the whole edge, and works around the curves of the armscye much easier.

I will check into the bias tape! The straight ribbon actually sits pretty well I just did haphazard job at pinning it so I could get the picture! XD I have waaay too much gold ribbon now.

^ i second the bias tape notion.

bias tape is great, because it creates a clean, professional finish. and if you get double fold bias tape, you won't need to make a seam edge finish on any of the places where you use the bias tape.

Yes, and if you can't find actual gold bias tape, you can get gold fabric and cut on the bias (45 degree angle to selvage) some strips, then iron it into double fold bias tape. There are even machines that will do it for you, but they're not cheap.

Hey everyone. Thought I'd finally hit this thread up.

My progresses are:
Kirito - I have the costume itself finished (need to make new armor though), and have the sword almost done. For the sword, I forgot that he had these partial dome things on either side of the blade bases....Made those today and glued them. Gotta re gesso the area now lol

Cloud - I decided to make an original PSX FFVII Game version of him. I'm on the 3rd cloud cosplay now..Yea..Awesome..lol I unwrapped my buster sword (it was wrapped in bandage for the KH1 version) and have put my materia in the sword's slots. I have also made the harness and SOLDIER belt but they need sewing and the belt neds backing. I also made boot covers but I'm like only half way done with ONE of them lol Also, the materia in the sword's slots GLOW!! They are awesome.

Well before I had to head to the ER for some serious medical issues, this was the progress I got done with Saria:

This was literally a living hell. It's made out of broadcloth, so it was really stiff. And my sewing machine, Bertha, kept screwing up with the bobbin. Anyways, I'm really happy with how this is turning out. I'm going to the Zelda Symphony Concert, and I'm entering the costume contest; so this has to be perfect.

Another side note: I didn't use a pattern with this. I just kind of outlined a shape with pins to make a dress kind of thing, blindly put in the zipper, and then by some effed up miracle was able to bulls#&t some shorts into the bottom half.

Current Progress Report:
Matryoshka! Gumi: 80%.
Requires general maintenance, including stitching up here and there, a new pair of bottoms, and possibly a new pair of boots + gloves eventually.

Gijinka! Tiger (Monster Rancher 4): 30%

Jacket pretty much completed, after god knows how many fights with the sewing machine. Goes down to about the bottom of my ribcage. Not too bad considering it's my first ever attempt with a pattern. Due to my lack of experience and my machine being...well, it's usual self, the zipper is not perfect. But hey, it's on there!
The zipper is what I call "idiot proof", meaning I ended up accidentally getting the kind that does not open up at the bottom. So I just slip it over my head (I probably would have ended up doing so while rushing to get ready anyway -.-). The sleeves are snug, but not painfully tight, and the shoulders are a little on the loose side, but I have a feeling that it'll help in the sweltering summer heat. Now I just need to find a way to cover the awkward stitching on the collar.
I need to get the connector screws for the horns (apparently, they are only available through special order at both Lowes and Home Depot, darn!), a bit of wonderflex, and I need to find the gloves, pants, and boots.

Gosh, I feel so intimidated with all the wonderful cosplayers here!

Things (And personal fandoms) have changed over the past half year, so I'm updating with what I'm hoping is my final list for Kumoricon 2013:
Momiji Sohma in his summer uniform with giant lollipop is returning, for Cosplay Chess.
Hitsugaya will be returning in his captain's robes and in a new soccer uniform for the Probending Tournament.
I'm still planning on cosplaying Haruka from Sailor Moon in a fancy, lacy dress of hers, but depending on what materials I make this out of, I might not be able to comfortably wear it for this convention.
This one's new... Afrika Korps uniformed Prussia from Hetalia. I'm a Hetalian now. And His Awesomeness, Prussia is my favorite character, but most of his outfits have at least two layers, which would kill me at this convention, so lightweight cotton uniforms for the win!

I just received my new socks for Fionna but they still need stripes at the top so I'll be doing that and sewing her skirt soon. Then all that will be left is her backpack and sword and she will be completely finished. I'll try to get some pics after the skirt is made.

I finally got started working on my cosplays.

Chibimano- Not much has been fixed, still need to finish the top.
Hipster!Poland- I got the green converses I needed and have the button-up shirt. I just need the skinny jeans, suspenders, tank top, and the beanie.
Dress- Got the pattern,still need to get the fabric

I would've gotten more progress made but right now I'm busy making my entire youth group zombie outfits for a music video

Female Loki just needs a golden necklace, much like the gold collar thing on Loki's chest.

Nearly-finished prototype of the heart-gem for my White Rabbit tie.
It's made from epoxy, with foil on the back side of it. The edges need some cleaning up, but it should be ready in time for Sakura-Con.

Get a baseball display or one of those clear photo cubes, they're the right dimensions and look fantastic when done. I used a baseball display for mine.

Just so we're all clear this is without photoshop.

I've also managed to snag a pair of white boots from my sister. She never wears them, and they'll work great! Now just to get to work on the other parts!

So, you can tell this isn't accurate lol I mean yes I have a white shirt and the vest, But I will be making a new vest, buyint a TANK TOP rather then the while shirt I have, and getting the correct shorts (I have a skirt here instead because I don't have shorts). I started working on my new gauntlet and claw for Albel today. I got it patterned out and shaped from the worbla.

I still need to add more more raised details on the arm parts. Also tomorrow I am going to remake the claws so they are more cured like the white one in the picture below.

On a side note. If anyone is interested in making armor I strongly recommend using worbla. This is my first time using it and I am so in love. It is so very easy to shape, easy to cut, its strong yet very light weight.

Tomorrow I am also going to work on the armor for Kuja's shoes. I don't have too much time left till Fanime x.x

I am trying to figure out if I want to make my collar accurate size or keep it smaller so it is comfortable.
Here is a reference shot and here is an example of acosplayer making it smaller

I like the way both look, and I have made it the accurate size before and it was difficult to move my head and such.

I think you should go with the smaller one. It still looks just as accurate and recognizable, and you don't have to suffer so much
