Any 21+ attending the convention this year?
« on: June 27, 2012, 01:06:07 am »
Last year was the first Kumoricon I had been able to attend and even though I enjoyed it I felt a little out of place at times.  It seemed like everyone besides my two friends and some of the staffers I hung out with were a lot younger.  Just curious to those of you around my age if you came with people already or were able to meet people closer to your age at the Con.  I'm 25 years old BTW.  Just curious about what other peoples thoughts are about this.  Anyways hopefully I can convince my friends to go again this year :)

My husband and I are 35 and 27, respectively.  We're happy to be your friends during con  ;D  I also know there's a thread somewhere here... something like "Otaku over 30" or "Too old for con"?  You're not alone  :D

My wife and myself, and most of our friends who go with us, are in the 23-30 range (my wife and I both being 25). There is definitely an age minority around the 15-18 range, but don't worry! There are other "older" otaku, lol. We just don't run around like spasmodic children, so we're harder to find.

I am 29.  I have also submitted a 21+ panel, and will possibly be part of the Otaku 25 and Older panel.

Yup, we have grown up with the convention. My bro and I will be attending again, and I have forgotten how old we both are  ::) We're fossils.

Didn't know there was a 21+ panel going on.  Well thanks for all the replies hopefully I'll get to meet a few of you there in September.  If I ever get around to it I'll be the guy in the Roy Mustang outfit.  That was the plan for last year and I never did it so gonna try for this year.

You're welcome!  I just realized that I made a slight oops.  The panel level is 18+, and I should clarify that the 25 and Older panel is open to folks of all ages (to my knowledge).

Not in the sense that it's okay to act like a moron because you're at a convention (I'd prefer people didn't), but in the way that we can be silly and have fun the way we did when we were kids, without being judged by a society pressuring us into normalcy.

There's the long version of what I meant.  ;)

Either way, it's not really how I'd word it.  I'd probably go something more like this:

"This is an opportunity to explore and exploit one of the many faces of Japanese culture without leaving home, while connecting with fun individuals who may become life-long friends."

...or something like that.

^ There has been a submission for the 25 and Older panel, which I might be co-hosting; unless the paperwork was filed differently than it was for Sakura-con, it will be open to folks of all ages, though.  There will also be a variety of 18+ panels.  I myself submitted for one, but I'm not sure if it will be approved or not.  I do hope it will, though...

I thought I went to conventions so I could act like a 4 year old and not be judged?  Honestly even though I didn't meet a lot of people my age when I did we had great conversations.  LOL I understand the Facebook thing it is just a convenient tool to say hi that's all.

There are plenty of older folks attending... just look for wrinkles and grey hair  ;)  Well...most of the time. Some Anime characters have grey hair (and people wear wigs or color their hair), and sometimes a youth will attempt to dress as an old baba, but usually you can tell whether someone is an elder or not. Yes, many attendees are very young - but we oldies are around.

I've been attending conventions since I was 18, and I believe my husband has done the same (but he's 5 1/2 years older....). Later on in September, we'll be celebrating our 22nd wedding anniversary.  :)

For example: when I was 13, someone thought I was 30.

My brother had the same thing. When he was fourteen, waitresses would ask if he wanted anything from the bar because he looked older.

I tend to look younger than I am, now that I'm out of my teens.

My wife and I are both attending, I'm 31, she's 24. We've both been attending the local conventions (Sakuracon, Kumoricon, Akicon) for years now. We went through a period of time where we felt a little out of place as the crowds skewed a lot younger, and considered that maybe it was time for us to move on... but then we got back into cosplay, and the convention was a completely different experience for us again.

Now we just need to get better about being social with people we don't know at the convention. But you know how it goes, one step at a time. XD

I am turning 24 on Aug 3rd. My first con was Kcon '07 when I was 19, so I've always been on of the older people. But all my Cosplay friends are Younger then me....so I feel a lot older.

25 Years old and thinking of attending.

With me I don't know yet if my work schedule may allow it, so I may end up waiting till the last day to pre-register.

It could be the case with a lot of us who are older and have jobs. Don't always know if we can make it so we don't.
