Otaku 0ver 25
« on: February 29, 2012, 11:22:21 pm »
First this is the name change. I have originally base Otaku over 30 from my own experiences as a older person in the furry fandom.   Many have come up to me and made it clear unlike the Furry fandom the age where anime fans start to feel like they the odd person out happen much younger.
So what are about; can one like Shōujo or  Shōnen because one is over 18? Why not? How do we conduct or ourselves older Anime fan. Of course sharing about the anime we love: old or new.
Again  this will be an open forum I do have some serious  issue I might want to throw around.  Fro example in light of awareness of sexual predators how do we conduct ourselves to a younger generation?
On a side note some have ask can there be a separate panel on cosplaying for older adults. I can support it but we need somebody who is more knowledgeable  on the subject to run it. I confess this one reason I do not engage in cosplay. Perhaps my partner in crime would like to take this up?

I totally feel you, I still love anime and enjoy cosplay but being over a decade older than someone who I ask to take his/her picture can make me feel a bit pedo.  I'm not a pedo, but every once and a while will read something on the forums about "some creaper" and wonder if the younger generation perceives me that way.

If I may make a recommendation, Animeman73 ran this panel at Sakuracon (with me & two others backing him up). Perhaps he'd be up for helping out with this panel...
My cosplay plans for 2022 (thus far): Vanir from Konosuba
My son's plans this year (thus far): Penguin Chiyo-chan from Azumanga Daioh

Well, depending on what the schedule will look like, I'd be game for helping out.

The one we did at Sakura-con was pretty good. I think it needed a little more structure, but other than that, it was pretty good.

Ok folks it looks like all system are go, I hope my transportation hold up.
Anyway  I look for ideas and  a few request for topics. It will be an open forum so don't shy and I will help keeping it civil and and let everybody to speak their mind.  I can use a second set of eyes and ears to help moderation.

One in particular I like to request is  a few cos-players share how the deal whit being an older cos-player and give is some ideas.  ( since nobody came up with an older cos-player panel)

Mostly being a minority I tend to just be a little more reserved.  There are lots of little anecdotes on the forums about "creepers" at con so wear my cosplay and try to be extra polite so as not to scare anyone.

This time around I *should* be able to make it,
(assuming that we are done counting AMV ballots by then!!)
We may be swamped, though.

I will hit 50 this November.

It's also a little hard to find anime characters who are
adult-aged. Some seniors and geezers; Miyazaki OVAs
almost always have a grandparently-aged person who is
significant to the lead characters, and often in a positive way.

There are often some older-looking no-name side characters
in military fiction animes, especially naval settings. We can
all be bemused if not a little tired of of the 14- or 16- year
old FOUR-STRIPER who has to LEAVE THE BRIDGE (and
take a helicopter to the mainland?) to study for
HER HIGHSCHOOL TESTS... :-P

But lotsa times you will find nearby some unnamed or
barely present charactar who gets maybe 5 lines in the
whole show, who is the XO or a Master Chief. Non-coms
really don't get much glory but the unseen truth is that
THEY are the gang who really makes the boat go...
For cosplay, they often get equally handsome uniforms
as the main character, so people might recognize the
uniform and go "Oh, you're from [that show.]"

I would LOVE to see an anime episode in which the main
character is some young, strapping Lt. JG right out of some
preppy officers' school who STANDS on his authority and gives
a DIRECT ORDER to a high-ranking warrant officer...

Add a couple of those famous anime "plus sign" vein bulges,
just for a SECOND - then they go away... and BOY is our
n00b gonna get his wagon fixed right. I would -SO- enjoy
waiting to see what they would have planned for him...

I'm actually having the opposite problem.   I commished a cosplay of an old old looking guy so I'm going to have to find a way to make my hair gray.

Last year, Gandalf was THE BEST costume at the con. Maybe not homemade, but it was the highlight of the whole con.
