Singles kumori meet up
« on: January 16, 2012, 10:38:53 pm »
A few years ago, maybe three, I saw a listing on here for people planning to do a singles meet up for kcon.

I was just wonderint if anyone would be insterested again? Or maybe there's a reason there hasn't been one. I don't know xD

I think it'd be a lot of fun too. I know every con, my two guys friends make a "get a girlfriend at con" pact. Maybe if enough people are interested we can plan to meet on one of the days.

Yeah, I'd attempted and nobody showed up so I said screw it and headed back to my room, it sucked. It'd be cool to actually see people show up. The one I'd set up was 18+.

I think it's a cool idea, but a lot of us are dependant on what the con schedule ends up being. I love going to the extra things like this, but, like last year, my group and I barely had time between official events. We didn't even get time to hang out at the park, which I really wanted to do.

Yeah, and it should be like, at the park gazebo or whatever, somewhere easy to get to at a time when most people will be available.

I think it was a con-time decision. But even amongst the people that heard and said they'd show, only a few did.

It's sort of a lose/lose. Tell as many people as possible day of the event or advertise on the forums and risk it getting around so people can troll it. I dunno. XD

The sign thing actually just gave me an idea... wwhat if there wasn't an actual meet set up, since we wouldn't know until last minute, and instead everyone had something that you could recgonize they were involved. Something that wasn't obvious so that those who aren't participating wont waste the time of those who are, but something that would be easy enough for those who do participate to see.

I actually like that idea.

If you're single and.looking, you could print.out a small, inch or two cut out of the forever alone face and slip it I. Your badge sleeve or add a little tape.

I'll probably opt for something a little less obvious, like a red dot, or a heart, or something.

Well a = could suffice for lgbtq folks as I'm told that's an accepted symbol, but anyone who actually knows please correct me. I myself will have a heart or a red dot, something inconspicuous.

I'd suggest putting symbols for whom people are seeking (such as an arrow "->" for men) But I know some of us are a little more.... androgynous than others.

I like the idea of doing hearts because it's not shouting out to the world but noticable. We could even do something as simple as a pink heart if you are looking for a girl and a blue heart if you are looking for a guy.

I'd probably be interested, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it on the 18th. It's kind of short notice (which is my own fault)...

And Hitmage, don't feel too bad... I'll be 26 on the 23rd of this month...

Edit:
Ah, I just noticed that this thing is looking to be for people 19 or younger. Then I'm out. Good luck, all.

Agreed, the three of us are all in the same generational boat it seems. Crazy to think my life will be roughly a quarter of the way through come October.

I really shouldn't go so long before I come back to check the forum...

I always feel so old and I'm only 24. It seems the more actively participating members are either under 18 or over 30.

I'm in between 24 and 30. ;) 27 to be exact!

I'm down. I wanted to go to the meet up last year but forgot to write down when and where it was and then didn't have internet at the con, not that it really mattered as it turned out.

I am almost in the same boat, depending on how you count someone as being a "real" boyfriend.

I would be up for putting a heart (or two) on my badge...for 18+.  (21+ is even better)  I'm already going to have a dot on my badge.  Heh.  I'm not sure I would show up for a meet though.  I'm social but awkward when it comes to date meets and such.  Lol.

If I remember and have time, I'll go down to the Learning Palace and get some heart stickers... The only thing is avoiding colors that blend in with any of the badge colors.

For the 18+ interested in guys, they could just use a different shade of blue than the card like a blue.   (Since the 18+ badge is blue)  Personally I rather have rainbow than yellow.  <.< >.>

During con, add a pink heart sticker to your badge area if you are looking for a girl, blue for a boy, and green for either/both... Just so long as you aren't obstructing your badge visibility and all that.

Your age doesn't change anything because people can tell what age bracket you are in by the color of your badge. If you see a person with a heart sticker, talk to them, see if you hit it off... This way, if something is going on during a planned meet, you can still potentially meet people even though you miss the meet. Not that there is an actual meet planned specifically for this, I think.

Depends on if you're a guy or girl. If you're a guy looking for a girl, wear a pink heart. If you're a girl looking for a guy, wear a blue heart.

Probably there only 4 or 5 that have actually posted here for this year..I can't believe people are actually still talking on this thread..it obviously didn't work with more people involved last year..how is this year with less people gonna work?

Ya know, I actually think a panel would be nice. Sorta like the Speed Dating thing, but not at the same time. Like a place for a bunch of single cosplayers to meet, and they can still wear the hearts or whatever got decided on, and just talk to others that are also looking for that special someone. Idk, Talk about interests and so on. Maybe have it be a 2 hour panel type thing (I know Sakuracon has long panels like that sometimes). There could even be a normal daytie one, and a night 18+ one. Me and my friend actually had this idea last year lol

If I knew about this I probably would have participated the past two years that I've been going to Kumoricon. If I'm able to go I'll see about getting a pink heart for my badge :3

We should consider maybe starting this thread in the general board since the Plan Your Own Adventure board doesn't get nearly as much notice. I wouldn't call it a meet up though unless there is going to be a planned time for singles to meet. I think having a standardized system for telling others that you're single and potentially looking is a good idea (and in many ways wish there was a system for "normal" life).

GregAtlas: I can't think of a good rationale for why a singles meetup would be on-topic for General Kumoricon instead of PYOA, myself... but I'd be all ears if someone can. (Personally, I think people are right that it would make a good panel - but that's yet another board.)

There are similar posts (such as the glomp sticker idea that was talked about a long while back) in the general message boards. I only brought the idea up because having a standard set should probably be a little more public than being off in a little niche area of the forum, especially when there are complaints about not having enough people participate. Not my decision though of course, and was just a suggestion.

I personally didn't know about this thread until just today while searching out of boredom and hardly ever visit the PYOA area since I live in the middle of nowhere and don't get to plan any adventures.

I really like this idea! It also helps to make friends, too.

Being friends is the best way to start a relationship IMO. ^_^ Feelings should be developed over time rather than "ooh, (s)he's hot, we should date!" :P (Though, this is kind of what I would worry about if there was a panel, but I am kinda paranoid about stuff like that)

I think I'll put a pink heart on both sides of my badge if I go to the convention. The badge holders have a nasty habit of flipping around backwards since they're usually not assembled correctly for actually clipping onto something.

Exactly why I was thinking this is dumb..The BEST idea for a panel would be a "Let's make friends" panel. No one will want to date someone right at the moment they meet..And if they do, they were already doomed to fail..I think the heart thing is a GREAT idea, IF people do it..If a huge number of people did it, then yes, great plan, that way, you can talk to them and get to know them without the whole 'should I talk to them? what if they have a gf/bf? maybe I shouldn't" type of thing. It'd make you feel less nervous to talk to them because you know they WANT to be talked to. But if we have 20 people out multiple THOUSANDS of people, it really won't do anything..

To all the peopl only posting negative comments.
Why are you even bothering to post and tear the thread and idea down?
Seriouly. If you don't like it then don't participate no one is forcing you.  Let those who want to do it do it. Its not going to hirt to try and if they want to do it and have fun with it let them go for it.
It may not be a huge success and only twenty or thirty people doing it. So there are thise twenty or thirty people with something akin to an insider game. Who knows maybe people will ask what the hearts are and it will spread.
I say let them do it and enjoy. Whats the wordt that can happen?

Yes I agree that it is more to make friends with possibilities but its still there and fun.

I'd like to try this singles meet thing. I mean, at the convention. I think it would be fun and a great chance to meet new people and perhaps not be a nervous wad of person when I do so.
I just hope I'm not covered in grey paint whenever the meeting time will be. I think people can be afraid to meet us Homestuckers, ahaha.

:S

But yes, I would enjoy doing this and I hope it is a thing that still happens.

Idk if you mean me, since I seem to be the only one not jumping for joy at it, but in case you didn't read, pretty much no one attended last year..Because why? Because of the exact reasons I and the others that talked like me have mentioned. It IS a good idea, but only if it's done correctly..Not even 1/8 of the attendee count goes on the forums it seems, so that means only less then 1/8 of the con goers will even know it exists..It's extremely hard to run a panel only 10 people say they are up for out of thousands

Oh and by the way, in no way am I saying this should not happen. Honestly I think it's an amazing idea. It just doesn't work with only a few people. If we had like a thousand people even doing the heart thing, this would be a rousing success, but the 10-20 people on here, really? How many people are going to talk to that person for this exact reason? If 20 people out of 5000 do this, how often do you think you're ever going to SEE those 20 people? A lot of them, you probably will never even see throughout the entire weekend..

Sailor-Jeimi - I was not singling you out sorry if it sounded that way.
I coulda sworn I had seen more negatives in other pages, so if I am mistaken I do apologize. I was just trying to put out a message to say lets try it. So sorry if it was taken as a flame or bashing. I truly do apologize.

But going off what you just said maybe we should advertise it around? Everyone tell a few people get the word out see how much we can spread this? I agree thousands of people wearing the hearts and this could be truly amazing. But all ideas have to start somewhere.

My convention back home (Kawaii-Kon) had a very successful Otaku Speed Dating panel that I never had time to attend. You could look into this? It's a GREAT option. And, if it were an official panel you could advertise the heart/badge thing in the description for the whole con to see.
I just moved from Hawaii to Portland.
I would love to find some wonderful friends here who love not only anime and games, but the outdoors too!
Hiking, Camping, Swimming, General Adventures and Exploring~

Your Central Oregon Otaku Chef here.
The sheer amount of support on the facebook page is staggering. In less than twenty four hours we have received.
20 likes, 50 replies, Several more people spreading the word. We have people on twitter, word of mouth, and spreading it via facebook to friends.
I have a feeling this may actually grow into something.

Magical Catboy - I would volunteer to run the speed dating but as of this moment I am not sure I am going to be able to attend the con just because of possible lack of having a room and needing to get it off work.(which the work shouldnt be a problem I am a manager and the place is so laid back its not funny. The only problem is I am the manager and head chef XD so if my boss wants the weekend off tooo......)

Another quicky update.
I have spoken to con staff and the stickers are allowed as long as they are not blocking any badge information.

A lady who will be working at the information booth is checking for approval but has offered to have stickers and a info paper at the booth for us as well.

So after a long discussion on the facebook page here is what it all breaks down to
There has been 30 likes, 211 comments.

Stickers are allowed on the badge cover not the badge itself. As long as it doesnt obstruct any badge info.
We are allowed to hand out stickers to those who want them.
It is advised you bring a black sticker or sharpy to remove your sticker when you are done with it. So when you no longer wish to be approached.
The info booth can not hand out stuff being this is not an official con event.
Those are the nuts and bolts of it.

Who is "we" that will will passing out stickers? I mean if you are talking about you and a few others you happen to know, there are chances some people may not see the exact people handing them out, or may not know you even ARE handing them out..Will there be a place we go to get the stickers?

Which is a generous number from what I'm seeing here. That's why it needs more exposure than to be swept into one of the smallest corners on this forum. I'm thinking of asking the guy that produces the Cosplay in America book on if he has any ideas on how to spread this idea on a large scale.

The post on the kumori facebook group so far has reached 33 likes close to 300 comments.
Not everyone who has liked has commented and not all who have commented have liked.
Yes a large number of comments are the same people.  There has been a number of discussions. Ranging from is this allowed , to should minors be allowed to participate and more.
So really the idea has doubled or tripled in size in a few days.  It may not be thousands strong but I think the chances of seeing another heart wearer are fairly good.

I have an idea since you mentioned "should minors be allowed". I know places like Sakuracon have a symbol on their minors badges. Maybe we can do like different stickers for minors. Like this (doesn't have to be, just a thought):
Pink- Adult looking for females
Blue- Adult looking for males
Green- Adult looking bor both

Yellow- Minor looking for females
Red- Minor looking for males
White- Minor looking for both

I wanted to write this with the minor colors being EXTREMELY different then the adult ones lol
But yea, this type of thing can keep the "accidentally doing this with a minor" thing down.

Aren't the badges themselves still different colors?

Yes the badges themselves are different colors.
Blue and Yellow.
So it should really help with the age problem for the most part.

Okay I don't know if this was mentioned or not but I do have 1 question, Is there a specific meet up spot for all of us who to meet up, or how is it going down? I hope my question is clear.

Umbreon,
There is no set meet up spot.
When you get your badge, place the sticker, color of your choosing, on the badge holder where it does not block any con badge info. Next, just enjoy your con as normal. Look out for fellow sticker wearers engage in conversation where applicable and over all enjoy your con.
I am sure many of us will be hanging out in the park and going to event like the dance and rave, so chances are there will be higher concentration of wearers at those locations and events.

This sounds like a great idea! :3

I'm not sure if I'll actually be looking to be dating or anything though ^^; Considering I'm just fifteen, and I'm getting the feeling that most of you are probably older than myself. Probably just going to be looking for some friends! :D

Anddd...By the way, I just want to clear this up. So, the official coloring for the hearts is...Pink if you're looking for a woman, blue if you're looking for a male, and green if you're fine with both? Is that correct?

There are a number of underage people joining in on this as well.
Its more to find friends and have the possibility of romance. Its to allow people to get to know others.
Yes the colors as
Pink looking for female, blue looking for male, green for both.

I think as long as the adults and minors that talk to each other aren't hitting on/groping/making a move on eachother, then it should be fine. I don't think this is just an event to find a new bf/gf, but more to make new friends that are also looking to eventually find someone but this way you can go up to someone and not have their bf/gf come up and it get sall akward lol So nothing wrong with doing this to make friends, it makes it way way easier to actually talk to someone

Me and my pink sticker will be there Friday through Sunday. Chances are I won't have any costumes ready in time for this con, but if I'm in street clothes I'm most likely to be wearing jeans and a black t-shirt with «Immortal Object» in purple. Possibly a black Aperture Laboratories t-shirt when the SAO shirt isn't clean.

I haven't really been able to review the FB group yet--are there currently any plans for any actual events, even if informal? Or is it pretty much, "see sticker, try to make a friend"?

Its pretty much see sticker try to make friend.
I can tell you many of us will be at the Anarchy Ball and the Kumori Ball, as well as the raves both nights. So there should be a fair concentration of sticker wearers those days
I also have a feeling Day 0 in the park there will be a number.
In short its wear sticker, have fun, make friends.

It's actually really helpful that the badges for minors are a completely different color. As an older fan one thing I really have to be conscious of given the way the demographics in fandom skew is not putting myself in positions that could be misconstrued as hitting on or being alone with minors. It's kind of the elephant in the room whenever I'm talking to or hanging out with random people at con even casually and don't know their age.

It's still going to be there in the back of my mind, though, even with adults wearing a blue sticker. I look (and for that matter, feel and act) a lot younger than I am so I'm always afraid of how someone will react when we get around to asking ages--and they find out I'm like 39 when they're like 20-25 or something like that. I can't really help when I was born--just means I'm familiar with a lot of 90's anime and remember VHS fansubs. XD

Here is an Idea about the whole age thing, when you put your sticker on put down you age, and if you don't feel comfortable putting your exact age, if you over 18 put 18+ also if your under 18 put  17- just a thought

I like this idea, but with a little differences..It seems the basges are different for minors, so no one needs to specify that they are under or over 18, the badge does that FOR them..I think maybe we could put age ranges on it. Maybe having the minors stay they way they are, then the 18+ put their tanges. Like 18-20, then 21-29, 30-39 and so on. That way if you all wanna hang out cuz you think they are cute or whatever, a 30 Year old isn't trying to pick up on, say, a 20 year old that wants to keep in their own age range.

I like this, aside from a few points.

First, not everyone has great eyesight and I know I'd be squinting to read people's ages--which seems like a great way to be mistaken for staring at their chest. ^^;; Aren't these likely to be small so they don't obstruct badge info?

Second, it's ambiguous--does it mean what age range that person is in, or what they're looking for? I don't want my age to be an unwelcome surprise, but I don't want that to be construed at "don't talk to me unless you're close to my age". Just knowing who's an adult is good enough for me.

It's probably best to keep this as simple as possible to avoid misinterpretation. But I do like the direction you're thinking.

Depends. What gender are you and what gender are you looking for? Those are what decides the sticker color.

If you aren't willing to read the last 2 pages or so just to get that small info, then idk, but that seems awful lazy to me..If you want the information that badly, just look..It's only a few pages back..But to answer your question (which, if you aren't gonna read the thread, how sure am I that you'll read THIS post):
Pink - Looking for females[/size]Blue - Looking for malesGreen - Looking for either

I had a thought--just throwing this out there for consideration.

Some of you have been going to Kumoricon for a long time and might already know each other from there or the forums. I'm brand new--this is certainly far from my first anime con, but it's my first Kumoricon, and I don't know *anyone*--or at least, I don't think I do. Maybe I saw some of you at SakuraCon in the SAO lines. Anyway, I'd like to remedy that, even if it's just finding someone to hang out with as a con buddy for my first KC.

One possibility that came to mind for ice-breaking would be for some of us to take advantage of this time before con to get to know each other a bit. Maybe share some basic information about ourselves--nothing confidential or personally identifiable, stuff like name (or leave it at pseudonym if you prefer to go by that), age bracket (generalities like ">18" or "30s" are fine), any constraints on what is acceptable in a partner like age/gender/relationship style, a short blurb about the person and what aspects of fandom (or specific fandoms) they're into, what days they're attending, or anything else relevant they want to add.

Since my badge is blue already, a blue sticker might not be so easy to spot, but I'll still see about putting a blue heart in the white bar area at the bottom.  And just to make sure, I'll probably make an blue origami heart and pin it to my moogle mascot's satchel.  Kupo!~  (^o^)
Prince McKupo is back in the action, baby!  Kupo!  Now, as for my "cooling down" cosplay: Jude Mathis, with both his Xillia 1 (100%) and Xillia 2 (100%) outfits.

I'm afraid I'm not likely to be there until later Friday--it's that whole day job thing. I can probably get Friday off, but more than two nights is pushing it from a budgetary standpoint. But yeah, Your-Friend-Sushi, I'd love to find some con buddies, especially if you know the area and the con well.

As for the head start, I was actually thinking more along the lines of posting basic info like that here in the thread. But I've also been thinking that a meetup sometime early in the con would be a great idea. Even if it just ends up being a small group.

So here, I'll take the plunge first.

Name: Brandon/Amezuki
Age: 39
Seeking: F adult
Attending: Fri-Sun
Stuff: I've been an anime fan for over 20 years with very broad tastes in genres, although I took a long hiatus from active fandom and con-going due to a previous relationship with someone who wasn't really much of an anime fan--big mistake. I got dragged back in last year by SAO and have written about 300k words of fic since then, and this reawakened inspiration has gotten me thinking about writing original novels again. SAO isn't my only fandom or major love by far, but if you engage me about it we can talk for hours. ^^

About 13-14 years ago I ran the Ayashi no Ceres translation project while the manga was still running in Shokomi. I'm a huge language geek and love picking apart languages and doing a bit of conlanging as well; my Japanese is decent depending on the topic but speaking/listening is extremely rusty. I've been itching to cosplay again and am working on learning to make my own costumes. I never quite figured out what this whole "growing up" thing was supposed to be about except that it the important parts seem to boil down to handling your responsibilities and not being a douche. I'm a cat person. And kind of sappy; I have a real weakness for shoujo romance anime.

...and that is me trying to be brief. I think I did mention that I'm a writer. XD

That's a good idea actually (I mean the writing about yourself, I have a few things on day 0 so I can't meet unless you attend what I'm attending).

Name:
This depends, I'm biologically male, named Jason. However, I am transgendered and would also respond to Jeimi (Like my username. It's pronounces like Jamie).
Age: 26 (just turned 26 on 8/8/13
Looking for: Males or females around my age. Not really looking for dating as much as just friends. I AM, however, more into girls. So if you're a girl tha is my age that is also really accepting of my transgender-ness, I will be more then happy to try to get to know you really well..
Attending: All days, even day 0. I'm staying at the Red Lion, so you may see me there a bit.

Things to know (also good ice-breakers):
-I love Magical Girl Anime. Talk to me about any. The basic ones are: Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Full Moon, Madoka, Nanoha, etc.
-I also like the basic anime (not naruto so..Just don't) like: Haruhi Suzumiya, Dragonball Z, Kanon, SAO, etc.
-I play guitar. I will be in a visual Kei syle outfit Sonday. Feel free to ask if I know a song.
-I am a huge DBZ buff. Ask me anything.

No idea what else to put..

Happy belated Birthday Jeimi!
Name: Jess but I answer to Sushi
Age: 21
Attending: Friday/ day 0 - Monday/ day 3, all day.
Looking for: Around my age, male or female, but I think I perfer male..

Things about me: I have a moderate case of socal anxiety. At times it is very crippling, but once things get going, you probably would be none the wiser. I'm a goof and love to make others laugh. I have found a passion for cosplay and hope to one day win a competion for craftsmenship, even though I still have a lot to learn. I enjoy seeing and exploring how make up and a costume can change someone's appearence.
My starter animes: DBZ, cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor moon, inuyasha, tenshimuyo, yu yu hakusho, pokemon
I love pokemon games! I'm super excited about pokemon x/y, talk to me about it and I'll give ya an earful XD
I enjoy drawing and writing though I am far from being the best.
I also enjoy the lolia fashion. I'm a lolita in training o3o
There's more... but I can't remember... You;ll just have to talk to me c:

I was actually about to post on here that it might be a good idea to change the "official" color to red because of that reason in addition to the fact many guys might not like the idea of having pink on their badge. Pink will be a much more rare sticker color to find.

I think my main objection to red is that there's any number of reasons someone might be wearing a red heart; they aren't exactly uncommon and we're going to be in a crowd of cosplayers.

Pink is perhaps a bit less ambiguous. But I think it's more important that the color be easily distinguishable from the green or blue at a glance.

I was planning on making a custom one myself.

Name - Daniel - answers to a wide variety of things including hey you with the face.
Age - 26
Attending - day 0 - day 3(monday) not sure on time of departure at that point.
Looking For - Adult Females - Prefer age of 21+

About me in a nut shell -
I am a culinary school trained chef. I work as a manager and head chef and barista at a small food and coffee shop. Yeah what a title for such a small place haha.
I have been heavily into anime for about 14 years now. Though I come and go on watching it. Just kinda depends on what I have going on ya know? small Hiatuses, maybe a year here or year there.
This will be my third kumori but first in four years or so.
I have a wide interest in genres so there is usually something to watch. Though I tend to watch what is currently releasing in Japan more than what is already in the states.
I am a book worm, a gamer, a theatre geek. Yep a straight guy who loves musical theatre :P
I have an obsession with fish and aquariums. Trust me I have more tanks than many people should be allowed and always building and adding more...
I am an entrepreneur with a few start ups in the process including a video game company who is developing our first major game.
Honestly I am an open book, so asks away. I will be happy to talk with anyone.

Age: 16
Attending: Friday (Day0) - Monday (Day 3)
Looking for: Around age 17, Male.

Things about me:
I am in love with video games. Especially Assassins Creed, It is my life.
I talk in my sleep.
I get scared easily, especially around spiders or horror games.
I'm demisexual meaning I'm terrified of kissing and sexual actions. I think I would just need to take things super slow. Ive had bad experiences with my ex boyfriends.
I love hugging and cuddling and talking to everyone so I'm a very social and nice person.
I love animals with all my heart even though I go hunting with my dad and stuff.

Also.. I have Panic attacks. Most of them happen due to my hypochondriacs. Meaning if I feel sick It can bring on an attack. Most of the time only my mom can bring me down off an attack but Ive been learning to deal with it myself. So If could cuddle with me when my tummy hurts that would be great. <3

I'll be bringing extra stickers too so look for a Mio on day 0 or a Female Two Face on day 1 if you need a sticker!

Name
: Rusty Finn
Gender: Female
Age: 20
Seeking: F/M
Attending: Friday to Monday
Stuff: This will be my 3rd year attending Kumoricon and my 10th or 11th convention in total. This is also the first year I'll be rooming with complete strangers and literally on my own, so I thought it would be nice to step out of my little cootie free box and meet some awesome people. I'm bisexual so ladies and gents come at me. Age really isn't a problem for me, sadly I'm at that awkward 20 so I feel to old to hang out with the 17-19 year olds and too young to drink with the 21 year olds but relationship wise it would be nice if you were 18+, so anything above that I always feel more comfortable. Friendship wise? You could be 10 or 60 we will be best friends~
MORE THINGS AND STUFF: I JUST got back into the Yu-gi-oh card game, wanna talk rules and strategies? lets do it! I'm a huge Deadpool fan, not so much of a fan of the new game but I can appreciate the appeal! So these sentences are getting too long and boring so I'll just make a list.
-Yugioh
-Sport manga/anime (hajime no ippo/eyeshield 21)
-DC/Marvel (Deadpool/Gambit/Duela Dent)
-Cartoons (Adventure time/Scooby Doo/Teen Titans)
-Zombies (Walking Dead/High School of the Dead)
-TV SHOWS:Supernatural/Doctor Who/Firefly/Bones/Parks and Recreations
-i like big butts and I cannot lie, you other brothers can't deny that when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist and a round thing in your face...did I mention I'm nice?

I like this idea of a meet up too, preferably day 0~

Age: 17
Attending: Entire con. Including Day Zero.
Looking for: Males. Preferably my age but no older than 20.

About Me: I am madly shy upon first meeting and not too huge on starting conversations myself unless first approached. I easily warm up to people however once we chat for a bit though. Easily approachable and very friendly. But once I start talking, I tend to ramble a bit. ^^; I am biologically female, but am FtM transgender and have been on testosterone for roughly seven months. I completely identify as male and gay.
This will be my fifth year at Kumoricon and seventh convention in total. I have been into anime and video games for as long as I can remember. My uncle and I are very close and due to him being a huge anime buff, anime has been in my life for a long time.
I live in the boonies of Oregon City where not a whole lot of otaku reside. Talk to me about anything!

If there's to be a Friday meetup, my strong preference would be for it to be sometime a little later in the day--I will be driving down from Seattle and staying in the Portlander Inn, so I'm not likely to be at the con itself until at least lunchtime, if not early afternoon.

But I'm also cool with just meeting up and hanging out individually or in small groups on an ad hoc basis.

Name: Haley
Age: 18
Seeking: either gender is fine with me, though I would love it if you weren't older than 21 or younger than 17.
Attending: From day 0 till Day 3.
Ice-breaker-information-stuff: I am shy upon first meeting but I don't think it lasts for too long. I play roller derby and I'm a professional derp. I'm an aspiring photographer with a passion for writing stuff and playing music. I've been cosplaying since 2008/2009 area (I think). This is my 4th Kumo but 5th con. Although I am 18, I've been told numerous times that I look any age between 12 and 16 (I swear I'm an adult!). I'm friendly and I think I make really yummy cake. Fandoms are a thing but I am terrible and so far behind on all of my fandoms it's not ok. Uh, after you become bros/whatever, I turn into Party Cat from that one online comic by Nedroid (or at least that is how my friends describe me). If you want to hunt me down during con, send me a message on here and we shall meet!
The mini boss level when it comes to photography.

Thank you lol Needed that

Anyway, One more thing I wondered. There's like 3 people on here that have said they are bringing extra stickers..However, some people here are new and have no idea who you even are..the first person that said that said "I'll be wearing a cosplay that's easy to spot" or something. yet they didn't SAY what that cosplay is..Plus, chances are, someone else may be cosplaying the same character as you..So even saying "I'm cosplaying as so and so" that doesn't mean you're the only one..So what if there are 3 of so and so, how do we know who YOU are..I say everyone with extra stickers that they are passing out, post a picture of you in all your cosplays (or at least your friday, if doing one, and saturday cosplays) so we know EXACTLY who you are..I may have some stickers, I have to see though. I have a ton of those label things that I can make stickers with. I just have to see if I can find them..

This is what I look like:

https://www.kumoricon.org/forums/index.php?topic=9707.msg784881#msg784881

I'll probably be in a suit much like the one in the first pic for my Tseng costume, although my hair will be different and I'll be clean-shaven, obviously. I'll most likely be wearing contacts if my eyes can tolerate them. When I'm in street clothes chances are I'll look a lot like that second picture, and probably even be wearing that «Immortal Object» shirt.

Joining the fun...

Name:  Jen

Age:  34
Attending: Fri-Mon
Looking for:  Males
About Me:  This will by my umpteenth K-Con; I'm a bit shy and love shounen anime, but more than that I love writing and am working towards becoming a professional writer of fantasy novels.  I love languages, books (obviously;)), gardening, drawing, history, nice people and cats.  I have a sardonic wit and an overdeveloped vocabulary.  Not geeky enough for some geeks but and far too geeky for everyone else.

My biggest fandoms are Naruto, Bleach, FMA, and Vampire Knight.  I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan but am currently console-less (inconsoleable?) so I can focus on a fuller life.

I'm also interested in meeting other writers; my interest in writing far outstrips that of anyone I know in RL.

And if a lot of us are shy with new people, perhaps we could play a game?  (But not the name game!:D)  I have peoples I may drag along or not, depending on the moment.:)

D'oh what the heck, might as well...

Name: Chris
Age: 24
Attending: Saturday-Monday
Looking for: Cis Males (18+)
About me:  I'm a hardcore gaymer (had a controller in my hands since I was 2), with a huge love for RPGs, most notably the Final Fantasy, Mana, Chrono, Legaia, and Tales series.  Other faves include Resonance of Fate, Live a Live (best JP-only SNES RPG I've ever played!), Ni no Kuni, NieR, Dragon's Dogma, Dragon's Crown.  Also big into M/M slash fanfics and shonen-ai.

Personality wise, I guess I can be reserved at first, but once I warm up, I can be quite quirky and animated.  My mom told me once that tend to look and act like I just jumped out of an anime.  I do choose to be completely ignorant of running memes and various other things considered to be obnoxious (at least by me).  Apparently, I'm far far behind on fandoms...I didn't even know what Attack on Titan, Sword Art Online, or even Vocaloids were until recently.  Definitely the geekiest guy at my workplace...and the only gay too...

Anyway, please don't hesitate to say hi during the con!  Look for the big flippin' moogle mascot!  Kupo!~  (^o^)

Prince McKupo is back in the action, baby!  Kupo!  Now, as for my "cooling down" cosplay: Jude Mathis, with both his Xillia 1 (100%) and Xillia 2 (100%) outfits.

McKupo, You do realize, that the AoT and SAO groups weren't AROUND until recently right? You hadn't heard about them because thety are still slightly new....AoT is pretty new, I guess, like I never saw anything about it even on any forum, until a few months ago, so I assume it just came out..And SAO started coming out in anime form only last year..So it's not like they are something you should have watched as a kid or something (like Sailormoon or dragonball)

Yeah, McKupo, what's with not being aware of everything the very day it comes out? XD

Seriously, don't worry about it. I largely dropped out of active fandom for close to a decade during a previous relationship, and I am still catching up on all the stuff I missed during that time.

I don't think SAO really had major visibility at cons until SakuraCon this year anyway. But if you're a gamer of any kind (especially if you've ever played MMOs) it's one you don't want to miss.

Yea, SAO wasn't known much until Sakuracon this year..I saw maybe MAYBE one or 2 Kirito cosplayers at Akicon. That was only about 3 months after it came out in anime form. Almost NO ONE knows there are Light Novels..In fact, During Akicon, I didn't know who the character was that those few people were cosplaying because I had never watched SAO at that point..

The light novels are absolutely worth reading, as that's where some of the best arcs are and there is a ton more than has been animated. In fact I'd go so far to say that reading the light novels is essential if you're going to try writing fanfic. But I don't recommend reading them until after seeing the anime--at the very least getting through the "Aincrad" arc of the anime.

Yeah they really are.  Vol 1 will always be my favorite though Alicization is getting better with each new volume. I wouldnt necessarily say you should watch the anime first, as the LN have given me a huge appreciation for just how good of an adaptation the anime is, and they give a lot of perspective on what happened in the anime.
Anyways, on topic.

I guess the way I look at it is, due to the amount of distillation they had to do in the anime and the way certain parts were handled, I think if someone read the light novels first and then watched the anime they'd find themselves disappointed at times. The anime is certainly amazing, but it does fall short in places and skip some things.

What happened with me was that I got so hooked on the anime when it was airing that I couldn't wait a week to find out what happened next, I had this powerful urge to write fic and I knew I shouldn't do that without knowing the whole story. So around I think episode 7 or 8 I went and hunted down the translations on Baka-Tsuki. And like... read them *all*. Pretty much one after the other. Mind = blown. And as I was reading the early parts that had already aired, I was getting this excited thrill every time I came across some piece of detail in the LNs that hadn't been in the anime. It was great.

But then new episodes started airing for stuff I'd already read. And I found myself comparing the anime to what I already knew. And it wasn't favorable. I didn't *dislike* the anime by any means! But those contrasting experiences led me to the conclusion that it'd probably be more enjoyable to watch and enjoy the anime and then go back and read the LNs than the other way around. That's generally how I am with any film adaptations of written works.

But as always, YMMV.

yeah thats true i guess. i know i get a little bit disappointed every time when Kirito beats Eugene, flys off, and im kinda expecting Jotunheim to be next, but its not, and i get a little bit sad. No matter how good the anime is, it just doesnt compare to the LN at all.

Age: 28 but age doesn't matter much to me. I still feel 16 on the inside but I've always felt I was mature for my age. I think I would prefer someone 20+ though.
Seeking: Female
Attending: Friday to Monday
Stuff: This will be my 3rd year attending Kumoricon. This is also the first year I'll be rooming with complete strangers and on my own without any friends. 6 ft 6 in tall of Norse heritage college graduate with a bachelor degree in science for digital entertainment and game design. I love almost everything geeky/nerdy, but I, of course, have my preferences which tends to be quite different from most people (like being a mecha fan but not really liking how most mecha is presented as one example). I love to cook, but have tons of allergies that I developed due to college budget food. I'm naturally quiet/shy in real life but tend to open up a little more in text form. I weight lift often but will never consider myself a body builder since I do it primarily to keep healthy. Oh, and I've always hated zombies with the exception of Zommies in Disgaea. Does Asuna get a little better/fuller treatment in the light novels?  Without being too spoilerish, I liked her arc up until around the middle of the anime... and then, not so much...

That's pretty a common sentiment. Up through episode 14 is what's called the Aincrad arc, covering the first two LN volumes. After that is the Fairy Dance arc, covering the third and fourth volumes. IMO Fairy Dance is the weakest of all the SAO story lines, which is a shame because the world of Alfheim is really, really interesting. And yes, Asuna's "damsel in distress" role in that arc is quite vexing and unbefitting of her.

Once she's no longer the damsel in distress she does indeed get a much better treatment, especially in the Mother's Rosario story (vol 7) which is told almost entirely from her POV.

I really hope we get a second season, or at least movies/OVAs. I'd love to see GGO and MR animated.

So is it still only the 3 colors then for hearts? No one seemed to give straight answers on it..From what I saw:
Pink - Looking for females
Blue - Looking for males
Green - Looking for either

Is this still correct? I need to make sure. I found some labels so I can make some..

Anyway, if this gets answered in time, I will be wearing these, in this order:
Day 0:
http://www.cosplay.com/photo/3401487/

Day 1:
http://www.cosplay.com/photo/3413552/

Day 2 morning (before 3pm I think):
http://www.cosplay.com/photo/3426882/
Day2 second half of day and (after 3pm or so) AND Day 3:
http://www.cosplay.com/photo/3410663/
(I will also have her Spear (It's drying at the moment so I can't take a pic with it)

So if you see me, I will have stickers. I may run out early though so if you ask I may not have some later on

That still seems to be the plan. I'll still be giving stickers during he con but I have no pink hearts, but I have the others. I'll be posting a picture of what I look like when we check in to the hotel, push come to shove, I'll more than likely be wearing my ninetale tails and ears so I should be easy to spot. If I'm able to, I'll post my picture early friday morning. For the other days, please look at my signature. danke~ <3

Yes those are still the colors.
You all would not believe how difficult if has been to find hearts in this area. I seriously have only found 1 sheet of pink hearts in looking at 3-4 different stores.

Also how do you all feel about a meet up say 6 pm at the gazebo in the park on day 0?

I may stop by if my staffing responsibilities don't carry that far into the evening, though I'm more looking to make friends than anything XD
(though I totally not at all against finding romance at con... in fact it might just be the best place for such a thing~ so many like minded people)

I'll probably be wearing a Jake Shirt (Adventure Time) and I don't have any pink heart stickers u_u or time to make one this close to staffing hour~
I just moved from Hawaii to Portland.
I would love to find some wonderful friends here who love not only anime and games, but the outdoors too!
Hiking, Camping, Swimming, General Adventures and Exploring~
If this sounds like you, message me! =^-^=

I have stickers. I don't have pink stickers so if you want a pink heart, you'll get a red heart instead. I will be sandplay luka on staurday, shiny nineales on sunday, and monday is still up in the air. If I run out of stickers I'll say so but that is my line up, google a character when you have the chance if my singante is not enough.

I ended up showing up at 6:30 but wasn't sure if the group was still there so I ended up leaving right after to pick up my roomie. Would have been on time if it weren't for the traffic...

I still have plenty of stickers. Sunday I will be a shiny ninetales, some things that will make me easy to spot:
  • I will have 9 tails on my backside. They will be up most of the day
  • I will be wearing a lot of white.
  • In the park I shall be dancing with silk fans
For the ball I'll be sandplay luka again, but I won't be carring any stickers at that time.

Name: Michelle
Gender: Female
Age: 24
Seeking: Males or females of any (yes, any) age with at least some matching interests and taste (see below), for friends or more
Status: Married, in an open relationship (polyamorous)
Finding me: I'm going to be library staff at the tabletop gaming area in the Red Lion from 9-closing Sunday, except when I'm off for the horror manga panel, so it'll be easiest to find me at one of those. Pictures at http://www.okcupid.com/profile/violetchimaera/photos
About me: I'm into various kinds of gaming (board/card/video/interested in RPGs), anime, reading (mainly fantasy/sci-fi), and baking, amongst other things. I have a really hard time starting conversations with people unless I can tell they're interested in something I am, but if you just mention my post here, I'll open right up.

Anime tastes: Twelve Kingdoms is my favorite. If you see 12K as more than just an average anime, that's a good start. Higurashi was great and told a great story, but Umineko fell flat. Bakemonogatari was brilliant, but Nisemonogatari was pretty meh. Read or Die's OAVs were good fun, but the TV series was horrificly bad. Really enjoyed Kara no Kyoukai, El-Hazard, Claymore, Excel Saga, Mushishi, Madoka Magica, Steins;Gate, and Nadesico. Really disliked Gurren Lagann, Code Geas, Robotic;Notes, Ergo Proxy, FLCL, and Hellsing Ultimate. A lot of anime goes to much for goofy stuff and gags for me, although I definitely enjoy some humor anime.

Gaming tastes: Heavier, strategy based board and card games, including playing-card games (ask me to teach you Doppelkopf). Hate games like Munchkin and Fluxx. For video games, I mainly play fighting and racing games, but also enjoy platformers, shoot 'em ups (not to be confused with FPS, which I dislike), action RPGs, strategy games, and horror games.

If you wanted to meet, but miss me at the con, feel free to message me on OkCupid.

Sorry, I misses the meetup, I think I took a picture of Sushi in the park on Saturday though..?

And I'm staffing artists alley. End of the con tomorrow though, so I'm not really gonna worry about the stickers I feel like I'm making friends anyway ^^

Wel, I was too busy doing something else..So I couldn't make the meet up, but I DID see 2 of you (you know who you are) and it was nice to meet both of you. However, those stickers were extremely small that you were handing out (idk about the others, I'm only talking about the 2 that I met, also not sure if your other friend was on here or not but yea). Even whearing it and looking in a mirror in the room it was extremely hard to see tat I had it on. Next year we should go fot WAY bigger ones. Or even, we can go with bigger hearts made of paper or something and have a string around the of the badge clip, it would hang just below the badge if the string is long enough. That way you can make bigger sizes, as well as not blocking badge areas.

Yeah, not having the sticker block the badge is a huge thing. According to the registration staffer that I had to talk to about printing out another badge for me, there have been reports of staff members freaking out at people who put stickers on the badge area but he was thankful that mine was in the upper area of the plastic holder where it didn't interfere. Apparently there is some sort of membership thing that is indicated by colored stickers on the badge and some of the hearts get mistaken for them.

I agree, the little hearts are barely visable, but it is a learning process.

Jeimi, it was great meeting you, however briefly. :)

I can't recall seeing anyone with stickers other than us. Maybe once or twice? To be honest, they really were a bit hard to see at a glance even when I knew they were there, and a fleeting glance is really all you get most of the time walking around and talking to people. My eyesight isn't perfect even corrected, and on Day 0 I was wearing contacts with an old prescription, but I had my glasses on the rest of the weekend and still didn't spot any.

It's cool, I had a ton of fun hanging out with Sushi and some other friends I met while I was there. But I think this concept needs some retooling and structure for next year. The hearts on the badges just don't "pop".

I agree on the stickers even though I was handing them out XDDD They were the best I could do after looking in several store, sadly most of them craft stores. It was a pleasure meeting everyone that I did and really hope I can go next year. Perhaps we should invest in some neon lights lol.
In all seriousness, perhaps we have a solid time and place where singles can meet up. Say if you want to meet somene, you head over to the big gazebo? It seems to be a meeting place for many and that way, you have a better chance of meeting someone even if they aren't part of the singles thing. o3o
I very much enjoyed meeting everyone and giving out hugs and stickers. I truley hope we can all stay in touch and maybe exchange pleasantries again next year.

Another idea, Maybe tie a ribbon around the clip holder. Like you know, thae part that has the snap on the strap that holds the plastic holder? Tie a ribbon on that. Ribbon is super cheap at walmart so it's not like anyone is wasting money..And if some people want, they can be handed out at con with pins on the back of a ribbon bow that way they can clip it to the strap. I say on the strap, because it won't just slide off, as well as it's not blocking the badge, but it's still super noticable. And then use the different colors again.

Say if you want to meet somene, you head over to the big gazebo? It seems to be a meeting place for many and that way, you have a better chance of meeting someone even if they aren't part of the singles thing.

Except then people have to wander around all the other meeting there trying to figure out which, if any, people might be there for the same thing.

As far as retooling the available/looking markers... For something like this you really need good exposure and participation, because it doesn't do much good if only a few people have markers, and it does no good at all if people don't recognize the markers.  So I think you especially want a way to include more people, like having a marker for "not looking".  That way, people that aren't single can participate, which adds a big pool of people seeing and hearing about your markers.

The staff badges had a nice empty space to fit the heart into (I cut one off some pink note cards I had lying around), but I neither spotted heart stickers nor had anyone say anything to me about it.  Ribbons might be a good improvement, though they don't seem quite as easily modified for pseudo-singles, like people in open relationships...  Maybe a black ribbon for not-looking and a black cross-stripe to mark non-singles that are still looking.

Having a panel to talk about the markers or take further ideas for singles-meeting issues would have the additional advantage of letting you get the markers described in the program books.  That's a big win for exposure.

Not sure how exactly if it will work seeing as how i have never been to a con yet, but planing on going this upcoming year.
Look for 3 different types of keychains, most the time they are fairly inexpensive.

If your badge comes with a lanyard or something that has a way of hooking onto a keyring, then attach the keychains using the keyring.
That way it is not on your badge, it doesn't hide it, and it will be large enough to be noticed by the other people you are meeting up with.

keychain idea #1 = interested in females

keychain idea #2 = interested in males
keychain idea #3 = interested in both

Just an idea. (\(-.-)/)

No they don't come with lanyards, and I noticed most people don't use them. They are hard to wear when you have things like a lot of armor, or a wig that's styled..I had one at sakuracon2012 and couldn't take it off or it was gonna mess up my wig so I took it off at night, and never used the lanyard again..So this idea is probably not gonna happen..But what "keychains" are you even talking about....A keychain could literally by ANYTHING you hang from a keyring..Literally..If you mean the color of the keyring itself. that's totally not that noticeable..

I mean it doesn't even have to be colors, I was thinking like for #1 hearts any color #2 could be frogs or something...you get the idea.
But if that wont work, and the sticker thing didn't work so great, maybe just make a heart out of something that will be big enough for people to notice and just find a way to attach it to yourself while still following the guidelines.

Yep. I know i'll be making mine myself..I'm just gonna use green paper and a ribbon..I'll make a ton though, so anyone that sees me can ask for one. We should start another one of hese threads for next year..Like start fresh on a new thread, maybe get this one closed..Then once the con starts to come back around, create a new one, then post in the FIRST post what the colors are so no one gets confused or having to look for it in the thread somewhere like here..We could make the thread title "Singles Kumori cosplayers 2014" or something like that. If needed I know I can always start it. I keep up all the first posts when they need updating..
