The Can Town Project!

I found this on tumblr and I thought it was such a cool idea!

"Every Homestuck fan knows about Can Town. The Can Town Project is something I decided to put together to help local communities. What goes down is that if you have a Homestuck meet up you ask the people to bring canned goods. Once you have them, you all make a town, take a picture (with or with out the group), submit the picture and give the goods to your local food bank."

I thought that maybe sometime during the year we could meet up somewhere as a pre get together before the con. In cosplay or not. Maybe do some shoots, chat, make friends, while all being there to do a good deed and have fun.

When, where, and how are still in question, but is there anyone who is interested in participating?

Aww! That's such a good idea. I would totally be up for that... Especially if we cosplay since I'd be the mayor of can town. XD

Where are we going donate the cans to when we're done? Oregon Food Bank?

Ill have to ask if either of my parents would be interested in transporting the cans though.

This sounds like an awesome idea! I live downtown, and I'll be happy to meet up, hang out, and donate. Our goal should be 413 cans.

413 cans is... a lot of cans. Assuming your average meetup is 20-50 people, everyone would need to bring a minimum of 8-9 cans each, and if you're walking or public transitting it to a meetup, that's a lot of weight to shlep.

That's true. Perhaps we could have three or four meetups spread over the next year or so, with the goal of collecting 413 cans in total? Seems rather more feasible, and I certainly wouldn't mind having extra chances to hang out with other Homestuck fans.

A continuous can drive would be pretty cool beans. We could do one of those cute charity drive charts where you get to color in some of a picture based on how much you contributed.

Aww! That's really cute. Who would draw the chart for us and what would it be of, though?
It would be funny if we used the SBURB Spirograph to make it look like a preloader or something, but that would take forever to color. Goodness.

Maybe if someone had a little spirograph maker, we could just make a certain number of them as the chart. Or something. I'm sure someone else can come up with a better logo.

Multiple meetups would be awesome! Especially if some of us can't make it to a certain date or destination.

What if the chart was the spirograph, but the actual can count was the load bar?

I'd say Kinko's. I was gonna offer to draw it but then I took a better look at it, and that sucker's kinda complicated. And we want it to look nice...using the loading bar as a measure is an adorable idea, though.

As for location...I'm guessing most of us are in or close around Portland? So somewhere downtown perhaps?

Edit: I was poking around on the Can Town Project tumblr and found that there's already a meetup planned for Portland! It's scheduled for Saturday, December 3, somewhere near Pioneer Square. More information is here --> http://portlandstuck.tumblr.com/

I think we should still go ahead and organize our own though, since it certainly can't hurt to have more donations.

It is quite complicated. Kinko's is going to charge us a pretty penny for the copy, though. Anyone care to split the cost?

I wouldn't say I'm close to that, but I can get there.

I could probably pitch in some. Not a lot, but looking at the website prices I can't imagine that a simple poster with the spirograph and an empty loading bar would be that expensive. I don't think it would be more than 15 dollars, and I could probably contribute 5.

Tip: It's fairly cheap in black and white, and only moderately priced in color if 11x17 is large enough for you and you don't mind doing the enlargement yourself in the self-serve area. But otherwise, it can get expensive - or at least that was my experience when I worked on the retail side of Kinko's, now called FedEx Office. Prices may have changed since then.

Your best best might be to blow up sections of it (i.e. by using http://www.blockposters.com/) and paste them together onto a giant posterboard or foamcore board. Heck, if you have a printer at home, you could probably use it for this process instead of going to Fed-ko's (or whatever name they switch to next).

Ohh, wow! Thanks, random! That's really helpful. I actually have an old 32"x40" sheet of poster board that we can salvage for this project if we do it that way. (That might be kind of big to carry around in a car, though. Maybe we could cut it in half?)

Just a heads up, the Stadium Fred Meyer (which I do security for) has a dropoff for the Portland Police Bureau's food drive, and it's within walking distance of a MAX stop, so there's one place you can use!

I was thinking, if this is going to happen, we should probably start trying to figure a date and place that we want to shoot for.
And who to officially assign the dropper off person to be. There has been a couple volunteers.
Also what we want to do about cosplay or not. Like maybe think of a theme, like winter!stuck if we do it in the winter, because if we're going to be outside then it will get pretty cold and not a lot of the characters wear warm clothes.

Winterstuck sounds like a good plan. I've got plans on the 20th, 24th and 25th, but other than that I'm pretty free, and my break goes until the 2nd of January, so I'm pretty available until then (if we're still planning for winter break; if not, then I'm free weekends). And as for location, if I can get there on Trimet, wherever works.

But anyway, do you know any good areas? I don't go to portland (if thats where we go) often so I dont really know anywhere.
