Forum Meet-up Panel [Approved]
« on: September 22, 2011, 11:20:10 am »
I was sad to see no forum meet-up panel this year. =(

Is there someone out there planning one for next year? Cause I would definitely go to it. ^_^

Well, I'm going to be signing up for staff again so I suppose that I could put in paperwork for a forum panel again.
It's not like those things are very hard.

Really surprise none of you stepped up to take my place in 2011.

LOL. That was my first K-Con. My only memory from it was standing in line for at least 3 hours.
And yes, please put in the paperwork Tom, I'm sure it would be much appreciated (☞゚ヮ゚)☞

I think that this year I'm going to try and have the forum meet up panel in the morning on Monday. Like a cool recap before Cosplay Chess.

I'm glad to see that you're probably going to be doing it this year, Tom.  I was thinking about filling out the paperwork myself if it looked like you weren't going to do it again.

Meet and Greet at the Con for Forum Addicts?
« Reply #7 on: October 20, 2011, 11:16:47 pm »
It would be awesome to have a meet and greet for people in the forums to meet at the con. Not exactly a panel, but we can have a scheduled time and room where everyone gets a name tag or something. We can hang around, maybe have an activity or something?

Has this been done already?

Just a thought.

The more people that show interest in a panel, the more likely it is that Programming will greenlight it, so I've merged the unofficial thread into the semi-official thread. I'm sneaky like that. ;)

More seriously, I think there's a really good chance that it'll be okayed... and Tom, let me know if there's any way I can help?

I just bought a copy of that game recently.

I have a similar game called Bubbletalk . . dang near exact same as Apples to Apples, except you have a single caption and everyone has a set of 7 caption cards to pick from and give to the judge.

Both of these games + sick, twisted minds = hilarity.

I'm not trying to be a downer, but I 'd prefer not to pay board games at the con. I personally love Apples to Apples, Scattergories, etc., but I can do that at home. I would prefer to do something different at a meet-up, especially since I'll only be seeing everyone in one place for half an hour or so. I'd rather do something more unique, if you catch my drift.

I think playing werewolves would be fun.

I also think maybe we can do some kind of voting contest or something:

Most random.

Most likely to glomp.

Most likely to break out in a dance.

Biggest troll.

Best Avatar, whatever.

Maybe we can vote ahead of time and announce winners at the meet-up. They can get a certificate or whatever (staff has enough to worry about, so I'm not suggesting actual prizes or anything). Or vote there.

I would also be down to just hang out and take pictures.

Meh, just a suggestion. Even if there were board games at a meet-up, I wouldn't sit out.

Hmm. I actually TRIED sitting down to play apples to apples at con this year. It did not go well, not even on day 0. Everyone was too busy rushing off to panels or volunteering or photoshoots, or to change for photoshoots, or to go eat. In the end we just gave up and left the game box in the trunk for the rest of the con.  Ah, well. Maybe after hours when there's nothing going on but we're all too wired to sleep....(if there is such a time anymore).

I won't withdraw my offer to bring it to the panel if people still think they'd want to play it, though.

That's a possibility, but it'd probably be more likely that it'd be better to play it after the meet-up.  There's usually lots of stuff going on as it is.

It would be nice to have something to do though. Just sitting around and chatting could be somewhat awkward and boring... plus we could do that here.

Werewolf game would be fun, but how would we pull it off? I'm kind of thinking maybe if we do make it a panel if it is big enough maybe do it like the slightly anime dating game and put on a show. Then when writing people's names down hopefully the crowd would drown out the noise of the pen/pencil and we could have screens to block each other from seeing.

Well, in the past, there's been various games that were played during the panel, too.  It wasn't just a talking panel (though it pretty much was in '10).  There'd be things to do, too.

If it is well organized, then hopefully there will be games plus some chat time.

The werewolf game would be fun to play at this panel. Since it is quite popular on the forums.....

I was just thinking, if we dont want to spend the whole time playing board games, why dont we do a few improvination games. Like, maybe the movie star game and the question conversation game (which is being played now in the off topic thread, come play with us!)  and then we can do a few weird games like guess my favorite shape or something. What do you guys think? Also, i think we should appoint a few panel leaders. Maybe five or six. And we can each have a job to do and bring to the panel.

I had another idea for the panel! We could do ask the admin. But with the panel leaders instead of admins. The auidence can ask us any question and we answer them. Since the whole point of  the panel is to get to know the person behind the avatar,  we should focus on games that help introduce everyone to eachother on a different level than we already know eachother on the forums.

Just having one person to lead it is stressful and boring though. Then they have to do everything, and everyone depends on them. Having like five or six people, or three in this case lol, would help spread around the work.

From what ive seen, they havent been on the forums for a while. I think itd be better to choose people who are on the forums all the time. That way we all know each other and arent just listening to tom and his friend. Thats why i like the idea of panel leaders that the people here decide on.

I say that TomtheFanboy should lead since he did create it and he made it happen in 2010.
As for helpers, maybe people who are well experienced on the forums. Moderators, etc.

Anyone can attend the panel.  The main element (at least that I recall) that matter in terms of forum membership include introducing yourself and meeting people face to face.  I've seen many attendees there that weren't on the forums, some stating that they planned on it soon.

From what ive seen, they havent been on the forums for a while. I think itd be better to choose people who are on the forums all the time. That way we all know each other and arent just listening to tom and his friend. Thats why i like the idea of panel leaders that the people here decide on.

I'd like to kindly disagree with you on that. While Tom hasn't been on the forums a lot lately I've been to one of his panels before (Pocky Club) and he's an excellent panelist! Even then he wasn't super active on the forums but it didn't really matter because when you met him in person he was just cool. I think whoever can actually execute it the best should run it, and since Tom has experience with these I'd be fully supportive of him running it.
Sometimes the messiest panels are the ones with too many people trying to run it and be in charge so two people isn't bad at all....

To add to that, the last time this panel existed, Tom ran it.  He was more active on the forums before that con, and this panel was one of those reasons.  I do support the idea of Tom running the panel, but only if he wants to.  If not, there are many people on the forums that I could see doing a good job running it, myself included (though I can think of a couple of others that'd probably be better).

Aw shucks guys... I guess I need to get some paperwork filled out if we're going to have this panel again huh?

My office computer can get to the forums again, but I work weekends so I can't get to any of the meetings.
It's gonna be tricky but I think I can pull this off.

^ Really?  Damn.  That sucks...

Well, if that be the case, then perhaps we should figure out who's doing it instead.  It looks like random is a top nod, and I would like to throw my own name out there as a possible panelist.  Any other ideas?

I'd be glad to help behind the scenes if there's any way to do so, but actually running the panel should be left to someone a lot less Fluttershy-esque than me. (^_^);

I to haven't been on as much as I used to but I keep my ear to the ground.
Add long as I don't have any staff position conflicts I would like to help.

Something I think would be fun, make up games we could play on a large scale based I
n forum threads, trick would be to make then simple and in a way lots could play at once
Like the Oregon Washington + - game go thru the room and people just sounds off where they are from largest group from one area wins, rough idea but its always near to hear how far people come from

^ That basic idea is a good one, though I don't think I'd use that exact game.  Perhaps the Pokemon vs. Yugioh, or maybe a new category.  There's probably other games that could be done, too, like a modified avatar caption game, or the word game.

Ooh!  Something that I've thought about doing a whole panel on (but this would probably be better) would be a "Create a motivational poster" game.  We'd have teams of two or three (or more, maybe), then show them a picture.  The teams would work together to come up with a poster, then we'd vote on our favorite.  The winners get Pocky.

Oh, yeah...  I remember that...

I can talk to her next week at Van Con.  I'm planning on going to that.  If she can't, I know someone who has a button maker, as well, who might let us use it, as well as the Kumoricon one.  (Though I'm thinking that both sides might be using theirs during the con...).

I haven't received word yet on whether or not this panel has been approved or not, or any other panels, for that matter.  However, I do believe that this one will be accepted!  I have asked a couple of people to join me as co-hosts, as well.  We will be meeting soon-ish to begin planning things out.

Oh man, I regret not going to the forum meet up panel in 2010 but I remember that it was set kinda late at night and I wasn't staying at the hotel so I had to leave early and wasn't able to go. But I am so going this year! [even if I'm not a prominent member of the forum society XD]

As for making buttons of everyone avatars, I know that I change my avatar A LOT so I think just blank name tags that people could write their forum names on would be fine. :/

^ Actually, I've been thinking more and more about the name tag idea, as well.  I could see some people complaining about it "harming their cosplays" or something like that, but it'd be faster and cheaper.

I have a wicked abundance of colored sharpies but I would be afraid of them getting stolen :/ and sharpies can be expensive. Maybe just some normal children's markers would work better.

That works. Or if people want, they can bring their own sharpies and just make sure they keep them to thsemselves and not let anyone use them freely. So people can keep track of thing.

We could also do a sort of "Who's that pokemon" game, but with facts about the people coming to the panel, like maybe show something along the lines of "This member of the forum's favorite number is 33 and her name means 'stalking wolf'" which, the answer would be me.
I dunno, its just a thought. I thought it might be fun.

We will be having two contests, STARTING NOW!!!, for y'all to take part in for the panel!

The first one is a "Make a Signature" contest!

We will be handing out three different awards, based on these categories: Most Creative, Most Purrdiest, Most Funniest.

Rules: ...we didn't really go over any "rules."  For now, just keep all entries forum-friendly, provide either your real name or forum name, and submit JPEG files only.

The second one is a "Most Likely" contest!  (Similar to what seniors vote on for their yearbooks).

We have a list of categories for y'all to vote on:
  • Most random
  • Most likely to glomp
  • Most likely to break out in a dance
  • Biggest troll
  • Best avatar
  • Top Poster
  • Most likely to find Cthulu
  • Oldest Otaku on the forum
  • Least likely to travel to Japan
  • Would be the worst flavor of Pocky
  • Biggest sugar fanatic
  • Most likely to remind Sailor Jupiter of her former boyfriend

You can vote for just one category, multiple categories, or all of them.  You can vote for multiple people for the same category.  You can even vote for yourself!  Just have fun with it, okay?  Fun makes for happy con times for all. :D

For both of these games, we have created an email account in which y'all can submit your entries.  Please send them to: forummeetuppanel@gmail.com .  Please indicate that your emails are for the contests by having the subject title saying "Kumoricon Panel Entries."  All entries must be submitted by August 20, 10:30 pm PST.  Any questions or comments can be emailed to us, as well, or you can email us.

THANKS FOR PLAYING!!!  WE HOPE TO SEE Y'ALL THERE!!!

I don't remember what I have been told by the mods, only that it's an approximation.  I think it was something like 800x300, or something like that...  There's a few now that are bigger, so unless a mod jumps on here and says contrary, I'm thinking no more than 1,000x350.  (Sorry, I typed those dimensions backwards; I've corrected it now).

Well, it would've been better if we had more people there, but it was an okay turn out...

Next year, we should have this include the Facebook crowd, as well... and no more SPAM.  It was fun, but I'm thinking no more...
