What's a good way to bind? Tips and hints
« on: April 03, 2011, 02:26:16 pm »
So, for all of you wondering out there what a good way to bind is well, here you go:

So, I've recently started binding and I've found a pretty effective way: a compression shirt from underworks. I specifically got the tri-top one and it works wonders.

Now, if you're on a budget then ace bandages will work fine as long as you put it on correctly and not too tight. (They've been known to crack ribs.)

There is also the option of a waist cincher corset but they tend to stretch a little bit after a few uses.

And if that's too pricey just go find my post in the tutorial thread, there's a tutorial there to make a home-made binding. But that will take a couple bucks out of your pocket as well.

And never use any kind of tape or anything sticky. The only time to use this is with open shirt binding and even then just use masking tape with paper or cloth to protect your nipple.

If you have anything to add or any questions feel free to comment.

I've had a ton of experience with binding, since I primarily do male cosplays. Now of course, it depends on what size of cup are you. If it's a larger cup, you're gunna have a harder time binding. I'm between a B and a C, and I use a combination of techniques that work very well for me. :3

First, under everything, wear a sports bra. It's a great base for binding. Then I suggest buying a compression shirt; doesn't have to be an expensive one. Hell, I've even seen them at the thrift store. Just make sure it's the right size; it's MEANT to be tight.

But the main thing that helps the binding is a waist trimmer. I buy mine at walmart for 5 bucks.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Gold-s-Gym-Waist-Trimmer-Belt/12167842

They're meant for your waist obviously, but you can wrap them around your chest somewhat tight over everything else, and it REALLY helps. If you do this, you have to make sure it's not TOO tight, because your ribs can get extremely sore after a while. But since it's meant for your waist, it's easy to move in, and it's somewhat breathable, and nice and stretchy. :3 Also, it's rubbery on the back so it doesn't slip too much. It's very useful. ^^ Hope this helps!

Depends on how large your... 'tracts of land' are.

I use a method most people say never to use, but that's because I have the thickest most non-adhesive skin in the world. You could try a waist cincher or sports tape.

NEVER USE ACE BANDAGES. They can break your ribs. I used to use them and I was in constant pain all the time.

Then just use VampireFang's method. Mine are small as well, so I find a small sportsbra and the clencher is as good as anything ^^

And also a hint, wear looser clothing!

Chan agrees with the bra/shirt combo, as well as bondage tape that's non-adhesive to the skin.  That also works for other areas, too.

Use a compression shirt. Seriously. They're the most comfortable thing ever and they work so well, and they're not as painful as other types of binding. And you can actually breathe!

They're designed to be worn daily, after all. There's various places you can buy them from. :3

I'm planning on getting one soon >w<

I am thinking about getting the tri-top one. its 29.99 plus 6.75 for shipping. I may pay a little more and have it shipped here in two days. The t-kingdom one is great because it feels so comfortable but it doesn't get me as flat as I would like.

Sorry, Just bought the tri-top. It was 42 for two day shipping. I payed something like that for normal shipping at t-kingdom

I got a shirt like that at a store and it works kinda well but not nearly as well as the binder I have done. I often times use both of them to get really flat. If you are very small then it might work well enough (and by very small I mean A maybe B)

Duck tape IS A NO NO!!! i broke 2 ribs due to ducktape the frist itme i ever bind myself. I was a B cup like you. trust me not worth it

and since you are a B id use a sport bra. thats smaller. then your breast size

I'm not sure.  I don't have to worry about it, myself, since I'm male.  I just found it mentioned earlier in this thread & thought I'd help find it.  Personally, I only see it being effective on smaller chests.

^ Of course it works. That's why I suggested it. As I mentioned before, I've seen it turn G cups into nearly flat chests.

Were you doing it right? I don't mean to pretend to be an expert, but I'm a DD cup and I duct tape almost every day, and nothing has ever happened to me. It also depends on what kind of duct tape you use, how you take it off, how tight it is, and how well you guard the necessary objects.

For taking it off, I just showered with it on, and then rubbed baby oil everywhere in that area, it worked like a dream.

Once again, I stress the waist trimmer. You use it the same way as the ace bandages, but it's made for that purpose (kind of), so it's easier on your ribs and body. And you don't have to worry about it shifting much. AND you can get one for 5 bucks. It's seriously a great investment.

I got a 9" waist trimmer from Underworks. 9" is a bit too long for me cause I'm petite, but they do have a 6" available. And after trying it, I think it's a good investment. It and my shirt I got from them, both are worth the money. And it's better than having to keep buying ACE bandages or other things that don't work as well, or take more money over a period of time. Just shell out the 50$ if you can all at once, and it should last you :)

The best way is to have someone experienced physically teach you how; sometimes verbally explaining things aren't helpful.

I try to host a crossplay panel every year so we can explain and demonstrate the various options for binding depending on size. Generally for those up to C cup size, the sports bra and 6-8 inch wide ace bandages can work well if done correctly & not over compressed.
A compression shirt is one of the best ways for those who think they will be doing alot of crossplay, will be wearing it for many hours and want to make the investment.
I'm currently working on updating the presentation for Kumoricon and will be bringing some examples of what you can use safely.

Cheers,
Kato

Never use anything adhesive.  EVER.  Not duct tape, not athletic tape, not sticky-sided Ace bandages, nothing.

I speak from experience.  I used to tape, and I thought it was a great, cheap way to turn my D cups into a respectable "chest"...and then came the inevitable day when I left the tape on just a little too long and got just a little too strenuous with my physical activity.  The skin under the human breast is the thinnest on the body, and patches of mine came off.  The marks took months to go away.

Please, whatever options you guys end up going with, don't be dumb like me.  Stay away from the sticky stuff.  XD;

Safety is a large part of why we developed an in depth Crossplay Panel presentation. You're example is exactly why.

I haven't heard whether our panel submission form was accepted yet but if it is we will be at Kumori with our presentation.

I'd used a 6in ace bandage to bind every other day or so for about half a year, and only had problems the first time I wore it since I wrapped it too tight. After you have it for a few months it isn't as safe to use since the elastic wears and breaks, so you end up wrapping it tighter to achieve the same result. When it starts doing that, throw it away and buy a new one. (Compression shirts, too, lose their compression ability over time, but it takes longer, so I'll be getting one soon for convenience's sake)
I think it's an okay method if you're pretty small; if it's uncomfortable or itchy at all, you're either wearing it too tight, or it probably isn't safe for you to use.

For open-chest binding, be careful using any brand other than ace. My friend used rite-aid brand and it peeled her skin off, and I used johnson&johnson (I think?) on top of ace since I was almost out, and in the small places where it touched my skin it hurt a lot for a few days after the con.

What if you happen to only be trying to bind DOWN, but not entirely eliminate your breasts?

I'm naturally a C-cup on a fairly slim athletic frame, so I am really large in the breast area. I'm going to cosplay Haruhi Fujioka this year, with her simple little A-cup that is for the most part hidden beneath her blazer. My friend has recommended just wearing two sports bras since it makes her B-cups completely invisible. I really don't want to spend much money on anything I get, since I'm not a crossplayer, and usually do the bigger breasted characters (which are SO hard to find in anime  ::) ) So what would y'all reccomend to make my boobs smaller, without completely making them invisible?

You could try taking them down but that could deform them if not done properly. Another option is to just use ace bandages but don't tighten it all of the way.
