"Nobody knows who that is" Cosplays
« on: March 14, 2011, 04:18:30 pm »
With a good number of new video games coming into my household, I have noticed a lot of characters that would be fun to cosplay. However, I keep hearing the same thing..."Nobody will know who that is."

Example? Miko from Cross Edge. ( http://www.nisamerica.com/images/email/miko.jpg )
I enjoy how her character acts and her costume is cute and it's something I could wear normally outside of cons.

Or Lionela from Atelier Rorona. ( http://shiroki.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/lionela.jpg )
I love her kitty 'puppets' and her character is adorably shy.

What do you guys do in these cases and what are some characters people tell you won't be recognized?
Do you guys cosplay them anyways?

I kinda know how you feel.  I've been considering going as a character from a PS1 fighting game called "Evil Zone," but I'm not sure how many people even know of the game, let alone would know about the character...
My cosplay plans for 2022 (thus far): Vanir from Konosuba
My son's plans this year (thus far): Penguin Chiyo-chan from Azumanga Daioh

I cosplayed as Matt from Death note for my first year of Kumoricon. The only problem was, was that it was so fail that hardly anyone recognized who i was...So i guess it wasn't really the character that no one recognized, just the cosplay itself xD

I cosplayed as Sai from Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro and almost everyone thought I was supposed to be Near from Death Note :'[

I'm planning on doing an Irish myth character next year, Cu Chulainn, and I'm pretty sure only one other person on the forums is going to know who I am. Haha. I'm still planning on doing it regardless though.

I'm going to be cosplaying Smudger from Chocolate Underground hopefully this year. I don't think people will know who that is but I'm gonna anyways because it will be fun!

Not many people recognized me when I was DWC Kaito, someone actually thought I was supposed to be from Air Gear I think. But it was fun anyways, and because it was elaborate, people took pictures and asked questions even though they didn't know who I was supposed to be.

Another year I went as Rumia from Touhou, and one person recognized me. It was worth it though because they said I was their hero xD

I think its fun cosplaying from obscure stuff if you love the characer. It makes it so much better when someone actually does recognize you!

MAN, IF I'D SEEN YOU AS DWC KAITO, I'D HAVE SO asked for your picture. Kit2Kit told me there was a DWC cosplay group and I was so sad that I never ran into you guys.

I got a similar reaction as Patchouli the first year I cosplayed her. Last year we had a substantial group for our photoshoot, so more people recognized us. I think the series is getting more popular.

I know what you mean! Green from the Pokemon Adventures manga, isn't very well known outside of well, pokemon fans who read the old manga. A lot of people that I want to cosplay from Pokemon aren't well known either. Ice from Pokemon Rangers 2 (total Gary Stu), is a really great cosplay, but I've never seen one! Next year I plan to fix that, and hope that I can just amaze poeple with his Gary Stu-ness when I bring him to con.

This problem has come up a lot lately when Kahlan and I are trying to decide who to cosplay. We encounter a lot of characters that we personally like, but they are from such obscure sources that she doesn't think it will be worth it.

I, though, am of a different mind. I don't really care if who I cosplay is recognized or not. I'm of the mind that cosplaying is for personal enjoyment first, and if you enjoy your cosplay, it shouldn't matter if it is recognized or not.

This is like, the majority of the cosplays I plan and do.

Curly Brace from Cave Story (Nice closet robot cosplay)
Makomo from Pokemon Black and White (You know, OC characters aren't cool.)
Kumatora from Mother 3 (You're a pokemon gijinka, right?)
Lammy from Um Jammer Lammy (Tony Chopper from One Piece!)
Are just the few that I've done that were pretty much not recognized except by my friends who knew what I was doing because I told them about it.

Just to throw a couple out on my planned list that I expect no one to know...
Kaede Smith from Killer 7
Tiffany Lords from Rival Schools
Irabu Ichiro from Trapeze
Chise from Saikano
Milk from Pop'n Music
And many more....

But I don't really care and still do them, I find it amusing if anything. I put hard work into my costume because I love the character, not because I want attention. The second bit is just a nice perk if it happens.

I was a chocobo gijinka last year (did it even count as a gijinka?). Only one guy recognized me as such (and asked for a high-five!). Otherwise, though, I was thought to be a Gilbird. I think I got Big Bird once, too. I mean, I could easily troll the Hetalia and KHR! groups if I wanted to with it and claim to be Gilbird or Hibird respectively. I'm actually thinking of doing this. //horribleperson

Like, 6 years ago I cosplayed Niea from Niea_7, it wasn't the greatest cosplay as it was my first specific character cosplay, but I had maybe 2-3 people recognize me. >_< Had a lot of people compliment my basket backpack though. lol
Line up:
-Kageyama (Haikyuu)
-Cordelia (Fire Emblem Awakening)
-Marauder Ashe (League of Legends)
-??? Who knows what else. Probably a cosplay I can wear my glasses with.

This year I will be cosplaying Macha from .hack//SIGN, and i'm not sure how many people will recognize me. So i will find and cling to the best tsukasa I find and hope it helps. I can't wait to be purple and white.

Last year tho My friends and I cosplayed a very old PV for a visual Kei band, the Gazette. The only reason people could rocognize me was my noseband. BUt it was those few people that made my day~

I just do what I feel like with cosplay. I do it for the art, not for the recognition. Of course having someone recognize you and what not is totally awesome but I'm more about making the costume then not.

Well, I've got a cosplay that is not so much 'no one knows' as 'no one cosplays'. Jeanne d'Arc from Axis Powers Hetalia xD;;; The series is extremely well known, but she appears for like... a single panel, and for one second in the anime. I have serious doubts that I'll get recognized xD;;;

A couple of years ago, I went as Yuu Inagawa from Comic Party (the girl in my avatar)...yeah, no one recognized it.

I also keep thinking about doing Nonette Enneagram from Code Geass (a.k.a. the silver-haired Knight of the Round that gets like no screentime nor any speaking lines in the anime), but I decided to do Gino this year instead.

Aaah I've been in this kinda situation PLENTY of times xD But I think that even though no one knows who you are, its still absolutley A OK to cosplay as the character that you want~ Its all about fun after all right? ^^

Last year, I was Maya from LM.C and hes a J-rocker xD No one really said anything but I had tons of pictures taken just for my outfit xD Though there were SOME people that freaked out when they saw me and that really made me happy ^^ It made my costume feel a lot more special that way ahaha~ ^~

I think costumes are more special when people do see you and recognize you :3 AND YES! I agree! Maybe if other people see you, they might be interested and ask you~ Then maybe the series that you're cosplaying will become popular! :D

Other then that I don't think a lot of people at Kumoricon will recognize Date Masamune, Sengoku Basara hasn't become as popular here as it is in Japan =/

I cosplayed the Kusuriuri from "Mononoke" and the most common comment I got was "I like your shoes". Those who did know me were pretty excited and very sweet :)

Here's a picture of it:

@EmAino, I was a big fan of Comic Party for a long time. Yuu would have been a hard character to recognize just because she's goes under the file of "Characters who dress like normal, real people". Sometimes cosplay get's mistaken for the real thing. ^^; I would have been happy to see you as her, though. :)

EDIT: Side Note: I don't know how some of you guys go to a three day convention packing eight cosplay or more. I just... it baffles me. You guys are powerhouses. Lately I make two cosplays per con. One as a "minor" cosplay, and the other being "major" meaning much more detailed and involved. The minor one gets one day, and the major one gets two days. I would die if I had to do two or three costume switches a day.

amazing charater and anime i love the destiles and how simple it is unlike most animes. you did an amazing job at him.

Oh, I am so happy to meet another Mononoke fan :) Thank you. I definitely think he looks on the shoddy side, but overall I'm proud. It was my second really sewing heavy outfit, the first resulting in hot glue to hold stuff together since I procrastinated.

Good lord, though, some people's interpretations of the Kusuriuri are just gorgeous, though. Seriously.

I kinda know how you feel.  I've been considering going as a character from a PS1 fighting game called "Evil Zone," but I'm not sure how many people even know of the game, let alone would know about the character...

I've found a video that is the storyline of the character I'd like to cosplay as some day.  His name is Linedwell Rainrix, but is known as Lie.  The video is over 12 minutes long, but you don't need to watch the whole thing.  Heck, I didn't, but I know what happens...

(It might help if I actually provided the link, right?)

Last year I went as a female Gecko Moria from One Piece. Only a few people recognized, but there were a lot of people that just assumed I was some devil. XD
This year I'd like to be recognized, but I have a tight budget since I'm traveling out of the country for a good chunk of the summer.

Sooo, I was just wondering... would anyone recognize me if I did a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic cosplay?

Gijinka, that is. I'd rather not try to make a quadsuit. XD Like this: http://aiuchi.deviantart.com/art/Friendship-is-Magic-GIJINKA-201919335?q=boost%3Apopular%20my%20little%20pony%20gijinka&qo=12

I was thinking of going as the warden from Superjail! if you've never heard of the show, it's about a giant jail that is really weird, with lots of violence, the warden has been described as a "sadistic Willy Wonka". only a few of my friends have ever heard of it, and the costume shouldn't be too hard to make, though it may involve fabric dying.

WOOO BROOOOO

I'm planning on doing something from Celtic mythology for next KCon too (not sure what yet, though) so Rebecca won't be all alone in her awesome, and yeah, no one's going to know what we're doing. xD

Oh, and then there's the "superhero Disney princesses" thing that me and Sora were considering.

Other than that... well, I think most of my cosplays fit in a niche. There will always be at least one person who will scream in glee when they realize that I'm Rika from Digimon or Shmendrick the Magician.

Whatevs, though. I'd rather be nine people's favourite thing than one hundred people's ninth favourite thing.

Oh yeah, and as for my plans that I'm pretty sure nobody will **** get:

Some day, some how, I will do Anton from the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Like anyone will recognize me, but I don't care. That costume is... the definition of bitching.

So who cares if it's full of chainmail and leather and ****, it'll be amazing.

That show has some awesome episodes to it.  (My favorite character is that guy in the opening segments, Jacknife, who's always getting arrested by Jailbot).  I would love to get a pic with in this cosplay while I'm Lina Inverse!

All the stuff that I pick and plan to do is based off whatever I think is cool or neat looking. I do it cause I want to, regardless of whether or not I'll have a group for it or if people will even recognize it. As it turns out at the moment, a decent amount of the stuff I plan on doing is either lesser known or not cosplayed much. Just kinda the way it turned out lol.

I do it for funsies, any attention or recognition is a bonus.

@Nikki, If I have time, I'll try and do a Basara Cosplay for Kumo/Aki

I heard good things about Basara, but I never watched it or read it.

The beautiful thing about doing lesser known cosplay is that there's less of a "competitive" feeling that comes to being the best one out there. At least for me.

Jaqua and I are planning on going as Warbler's from Glee. Particularly Jeff and Nick, but no one knows who they are, and we may or may not keep a tally of how many people think we're failed Ouran cosplayers.

Otherwise, Hanschen and Ernst from Spring Awakening.

On a related note, I just had the idea that I'd like to cosplay from my favorite book series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Would anyone recognize that? I'd probably stick to a design from the 2005 movie.

This would probably be the costume I'd choose. (Trillian is pretty fashionable in this movie.)

I like a lot of shows/games that aren't very popular, and I'd like to cosplay from a lot of them. Like I would love to be Nemu from Da Capo, Shalua from FF7:DoC, the Dark Liege from Nora, or Houou Maniwa from Katanagatari, but I feel like nobody would know who I was cosplaying.
I'm sure it would be worth it, though.

The one cosplay I did that I was surprised didn't get recognized very often was my Hamtaro. I figured everyone would be all "ohmahgoodness, it's Hamtaro" but no one I didn't know even approached me :/

That happened with my Penelope. I put it on and I was headed for the meetup and before I even got out the door ten people called me Pikachu so I was all, "D< F*** this s***! I'm changing!" So I changed back into Luka cause I was sick of being called Pikachu and Molly wanted to go back to being Vocaloids.

wait, were you in her pirate garb at kcon 2009? i couldnt find the necklace ANYWHERE! where did you find one?

No, I was in her blue dress at kcon 2010/Sakuracon 2011. And I made the necklace myself out of some Sculpey and paint. XD

Steely, you'd probably have to make it (if you want one I'm selling one I made >>)

Anywhos...I've done some Steampunk and original characters at cons and it's slightly annoying when people are always asking what anime am I from and then just go "oh" when I say it's original...
I would love to get to know your steampunk characters, but at con it's sort of tedious. Unless we're standing in line together, I never have time to ask people about that kind of stuff. It's a little depressing because it downplays creative original characters. It's sad.

Yeah, I've had people talk to me about my inspiration for my outfits and such. I just get annoyed when people look down at me for doing original outfits that technically aren't anime....

I didn't wear the cosplay, but my friend cosplayed Eve with me as Sven from Black Cat. And she wore Eve's first outfit and got mistaken for being Misa the whole time. It was sad. B/c Eve is sooooo much better than Misa >>

It's pretty sad, but as I scroll through this, I recognized a LOT of characters.

Someone said Sai from Neuro.

... :I I'm gonna be cosplaying him this year, along with a Yako and MAYBE a Neuro.

And I'm going as a Toriningen or Shitai from Yume Nikki. I doubt anyone's gonna recognize me much this year. :I

I'm going as a Nadie from El Cazador De La Bruja... Most people have never heard of the Anime (it's not bad I swear!) and won't recognize the character. But its such a cool costume!

I went as an Assassin from Assassin's Creed one year, like before it became a super popular game, and NO ONE knew who I was D: but it was still so much fun to walk around looking like a boss assassin, I didn't even care that the only people who knew where I was from weren't actually participating in the con XD

As long as a person's costume is cool looking, I like to take a picture of it, even if I have no idea where it's from! Quality over recognizable-ity?

I've wanted to cosplay from Monster ever since I watched it the first time, but everyone in that show just wears normal clothes.  A Nameless Monster plush would help, but still.

Last year's Kumoricon, I cosplayed as Suigintou from Rozen Maiden. I worked my ass off getting everything for that costume. Thought it was like the best one I've ever done.
Once I got to the con, only 3 people recognized me. And 1 guy said "Oh! It's Saber from Fate Stay Night!" and I literally face palmed myself...

^She is amazing. She is my favorite Rozen Maiden character, so that's what motivated me to cosplay her. I felt so fail when I got to the con as her. Yet again, I saw very few Rozen Maiden cosplays there. But I thought it was a pretty known anime.

I'll have to find a good picture to post on here. And Souseiseki is my next favorite. That is who I was thinking of cosplaying this year and asking one of my friends to cosplay as Suiseiseki, but after last year's failed cosplay I thought maybe I'll stick with a simple, more known seires to cosplay.

Suigintou = Saber? ROFL!!! Wooooooow! that person doesn't know Saber then!

I haven't read/watched Rozen Maiden myself, but it's on the list somewhere and I at least KNOW of it. I generally recognize Suigintou and the other gal when I see them xD;

I was Scraps, the Patchwork Girl from the Wizard of Oz books at Sakuracon. No one recognized, which I was expecting, and a few other people thought I was Sally, which I was also expecting. I was not expecting to hear a loud, shrieking voice exclaim "SALLY!", only to turn around and find a small group girls sprinting towards me, babbling about how happy they were to find a Sally. I felt a bit awkward telling them they were wrong. ^^;

I was Alice from Alice in wonderland the first time I decided to cosplay an actual character and had someone think I was a maid...With my last minute Cheshire cat right beside me... She even had the guts to give me a disgusted look.

I was very put down.

I remember a few years ago I cosplayed as the young version of Uchiha Itachi (before he killed the Uchiha Clan) and, although I was at a very small con, so many people thought I was cosplaying Sasuke ... I mean, I suppose their guesses weren't too far off ... but still ... I had even drawn the lines under my eyes! Sasuke doesn't have those lines, nor does he have longish hair pulled back into a low ponytail!

I wish I had seen you! I would have fanboyed so hard, especially if you had props with you~

I will find you and take lots of pictures and be over enthusiastic and hopefully drag over other people who will fully appreciate you guys. Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro is amazing, especially the manga.... *sigh* Some older friends of mine cosplayed it before I knew what it was and even then I thought they looked cool...

I want to cosplay from Deadman Wonderland, Doubt or Judge. All three are amazing and I don't think they get enough credit.

I about lost it when I saw the group of Doubt cosplayers at K con last year. I loved on them with my camera long time.
YESSSSSSSSSS. That was us! It was so cool to be recognized!
I was the Rei with the wrong shade of wig and a huge wheelchair... Some of my group will be returning this year, but I think only two or three of them...

Hmmm... Well, I cosplayed Aizawa Kouicjhi from Nabari and didn't get recognized, and of course my Doubt group got only about a handful of recognitions and then other photos because of our heads... Though I was only recognized in the group, outside of it I was totally unrecognizable because I didn't have a head.
I will be cosplaying Albert de Morcerf from Gankutsuou, the Count of Monte Cristo and I only expect to be recognized when I'm with my Count, if that... XD I expect most people will be freaking out over how awesome/how blue she is and completely forget about poor naive rich little me.
I've plan on doing lots of more obscure cosplays, but mostly only for photoshoots... I don't want to spend all my time and money on a cosplay not to be appreciated at con.

I think I fall into this category this year since I have chosen more obscure characters than previous years. I haven't had much time to devote effort into making my cosplays this year, so I have chosen less difficult ones. As for the character(s) not being well known, I don't mind at all. Mostly, I am looking forward to just having fun, going to panels, and taking pictures of other cosplayers.  I think some will recognize Shana more compared to Hazuki but I will find out real sooooon. ♫ ♫♫ ♫

I'm going to probably be unrecognizable throughout the convention since I am going as a Star Wars character that only exists in the books and comics and am doing a slight variation of her smuggler outfit :P

Ah well, I think it will be fun to for once be a character nobody really knows!
