I weighed myself this morning and I weighed 133 :D I am down three pounds. It probably wont last since I didn't eat a whole lot yesterday an I worked out quite a bit.

Welp, this is my 2nd year at a con, and one of my cosplays requires me to look semi-muscular, so I gotta work out! I'm 16, 6'3" (taaalllll ;w;) and about 155 lbs. That's pretty skinny for someone of my stature. I'm not a stick, but I'm not rippling with muscle either. I have some slight definition, but that's it :U

I'd like to be able to gain some muscle, but not to look buff or anything. I'm going for the 'lean' look. I'm gonna start going to my local gym (I've been going for the past week or two every other day) and do lots of reps and weight lifting and such, (high weight/a few reps = gettin buff, low weight/many reps = lean muscle buildan :D) plus lots of protein! This is kind of hard since I'm vegan, but I'll make it work :3

I need to lose weight for my cosplays (and just to make me happy), so i'm doing winterguard, a healthier diet, and more xersize in general. I'm doing pretty good in everything but the healthier diet.......I like mah junk food too much  :-\

Also, I have lost ~5 lbs since January started.  Haven't really been paying too close attention to the scale, but I can definitely feel it in my pants. XD  Just been more or less getting back to my healthier eating habits that I had before Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas happened. XD

I moved down to Oregon and I'm too far away from the college to do classes (and thus no gym class...) since I don't have a car yet.


I need to find something I can do around the house. It's hard when you're handcuffed to the stove. Curse being a woman.
But really...Small apartment, cold outside, I don't trust the area enough yet to go outside and do anything on my own, Griff is always at work...

Sit ups maybe...?
But I need motivation! I need my tummy smaller and to get rid of this 'cushion.' Griff likes to make me feel better by saying it's like a pillow for when I have a kid but I still don't like it! D: I want a flat tummy...
What exercises work on abs...?

I hear 30 min of sex burns the same amount as running 2 miles. Lawlz

@Gryff: DO YOGA DO YOGA DO YOGA!!! It doesn't take up a whole lot of room, you really only need a yoga mat (it gives you great traction which comes in handy when you're holding yourself up on your toes and fingertips) and time, and it builds strength, endurance, flexibility, helps to tone, and is low-impact. I can do yoga all day, I love it. Not to mention a lot of yoga is meditation, which I personally love because I can zone out and think of whatever dumb stuff I want and not have to worry about counting how many situps or pushups or crunches I've done.

Yoga is decent for everything including that tummy.  Other things you can do are sit ups and crunches, dancing, and anything that has you moving your whole body in the action.  I would recommend dancing for girls.  Y'all seem to like it much more then the boyz.  Lots of videos on the internet that you can dance to or just throw on some music and invite people over.

Oh man! I'm getting myself a wii fit body XD
I usually forget to eat which is bad but..I is tiny already.
I walk nearly everyday and I've been trying to wii fit everyday or play Just Dance 2.
Yup, this is how I plan on working out XD I enjoy doing V crunchies? or something like that and running.
Push myself a little more everyday. I don't plan on loosing weight but I want to tone my muscles for them scantly clad cosplays XD

God I am so fat...

I've been gaining weight. I went to a lolita meetup today and looking at the pics, I look so awful because you can tell I've gained weight. Tomorrow morning I am going to start working out again. I also am going to stop drinking anything but water, and I'm not going to eat crappy food all the time.

I'm going to do the elliptical. I like doing it in the morning and then taking a shower because I feel all clean and refreshed for the day.

I've never cared for them, myself :/ having to do them ALL THE TIME in high school PE definitely made me never want to do them again. They hurt, and not in a good way.

Okay, I did the elliptical while watching an episode of K-ON. I love that the computer is right next to me when I workout. It goes by faster and helps keep the time. Also I want to make a cute Mugi, so watching the show gives me some motivation.

Today is going to be a bit tough since I'm eating out for both breakfast and dinner, but I'll try to eat things that are healthier. I haven't been getting enough fresh fruits and vegetables, and actually I've barely been eating meat, too.
WAAAAAAAAAY too much bread in my diet. Crackers, chips, snacky crap.

There not really bad they actually good for your lower back. The only reason there bad for lower back is if not doing it right or unhealthy back.  Crunches and sit ups mostly work the lower back. it works the abs too but not as much.

Run! I really mean it. Even if you have to start out slow with very little distance. Running helps you so very much!

In fact. I plan to start running again. February last year I stopped doing my running routine and now I've gone from the skinniest and most fit I've ever been in my life to the most unhealthiest.

There not really bad they actually good for your lower back. The only reason there bad for lower back is if not doing it right or unhealthy back.  Crunches and sit ups mostly work the lower back. it works the abs too but not as much.

A lot of what I've read seems to suggest otherwise.  At any rate, assuming there is a way to do it right, there are plenty of other ab exercises that IMO are better and easier to perform, without the risk of doing it wrong. ^^

Cable Crunches (or Inverted Crunches) actually can work brilliantly without putting any strain on the back. Instead of lying on your back, you get on your knees and (with or without the addition of a pulley system for extra weight-resistance) you crunch down. It lights your abs up like fire, and doesn't even touch the back in any uncomfortable way.

Yeah I see those suggested a lot actually.  The thing about crunches that I always hear is so bad is they cause compression of the lower back .. which is something most of us don't really need. XD

I did deadlifts yesterday and now my hamstrings is soooore. D:

I have been so lazy so I am going to try to workout more. I just get bored of some workouts so quickly but now I have options. Today I think I am going to do Kenpo and tomorrow I will probably jog.

I REALLY need to find a way to start toning up.... I haven't had a real work-out routine since November beings my gyms hours don't really mesh well with my school/work schedule. I'm really nervous that with my being sick so much lately I've gained back weight which sucks.

If anyone has any idea of little things I can do alone in my room in my spare time to work out a bit I'd appreciate it, I'm not really supposed to do crunches that much because of back issues, but I'm getting desperate here! XD

I've been trying to work twice as hard on my eating habits, and with my parents currently trying to lose weight to it's been easier to make healthier choices at home. In fact I just got done having a thing of yogurt with fruit granola... soooooo good. People have said recently that I look like I've lost weight, but I don't see it, I've been avoiding the scale the last few weeks, but I think tomorrow morning I have to just suck it up and see what damage I've caused this Winter. YIKES!

i'm actually planning on getting ddr for the wii (since i kinda... failed at buying it for 6 years for the ps2 XDD) so ima start on that again :3 as well as some arm action with my wii fitness XD

Nightmare is right, but ya there are better exercises that are less strain and more overall effect like them big balls but they don't work the core as much because its a dispersed effect.  I personally like crunches and sit ups, but need some that work the obliques and upper back.  I'm bad at not doing those.


Dubaby - in your room?  uhh jump rope? wii, stair steppers with weights, dance.  I don't think you can do much else, i guess a treadmill if u have one.

I did a little Googling on it.  I know there's a guy Dr. Stuart McGill who has made his entire career writing about the back.  He's interviewed in this article on Newsweek titled, "Stop Doing Sit-Ups: Why Crunches Don't Work"

I have a pilates ball and some small weights I try and use, but I guess I'm just hoping I can find something that I feel actually requires more energy and will make me break a sweat. I really wanna get a Kinect for my X-Box so I can get one of those dance games, but between school and saving for a new car I don't really have the cash. lol. I should probably just hit the web and look for little dance routines I can do even though I feel like a total dweeb when I dance. XD

In other news I weighed myself this morning and I lost 5 pounds at some point.... My weight has always kind of fluctuated a bit, but previously it's always been between 130-135. So the idea that I might have gotten that down to 125-130 gives me a bit of a confidence boost. I still have a ways to go to get to my ideal weight, I'm hoping once the weather stops being so sucky I can lose some more from exercising outside.

I love working out with DDR!

Back in High School (when it first came out) we didn't see a friend for a whole summer. He just disappeared in his basement. When school started again he was this uber hot, fit, guy! Turns out he did nothing but play DDR for three months strait. He used to be a chubby gamer guy, now he's a hot gamer guy! :P

I remember my DDR days... Back when I was 12-14 I used to play DDR for like five hours EVERY DAY and oh man I got so fit it was crazy. Then I stopped for some reason and now I suck at it again. lolol oops

I WANT THE WEATHER TO BE NICER SO THAT I CAN GO ROLLERBLADING. Back during the summer I used to rollerblade like every day, up and down Waterfront, to OMSI, up Hawthorne, pretty much anywhere I could go that wasn't too hilly (since going downhill in rollerblades is pretty much terrifying considering mine don't have brakes) and I miss it sooo muuuuuuch.

Also, more incentive to get fit: my dad's getting married in Hawaii in mid-March, and since we're going to be there for a week and my step-brother-to-be and I will no doubt be snorkeling and swimming and surfing at every available opportunity, I want to look good in my bikini that I'm no doubt going to be wearing ~70% of the time.

All I have to say is no matter what workout there is. Your bound to injure a certain muscle in the body If not doing it right, if using more weight than can be handle, or not fit to do it.

So lately I've heard a lot about P90X and have seen a few people talking about using it on here.... I was wondering how the program is working for some of you guys or if anyone has more info on it. If it works well enough I might try and find some of the work-outs online and start doing those around my room since I have most of the materials already.

i'm actually planning on getting ddr for the wii (since i kinda... failed at buying it for 6 years for the ps2 XDD) so ima start on that again :3 as well as some arm action with my wii fitness XD

I love working out with DDR!

Back in High School (when it first came out) we didn't see a friend for a whole summer. He just disappeared in his basement. When school started again he was this uber hot, fit, guy! Turns out he did nothing but play DDR for three months strait. He used to be a chubby gamer guy, now he's a hot gamer guy! :P
BUT THAT'S MY GOAL! +w+ well the HAWT GAMER part XD

It's good, but in my honest opinion it's too hardcore for most people.  Heck, it's too hardcore for me.  It will blast you.  Leave you sore for days.  Although I suppose if you stuck w/ it the soreness would subside.  But it's just that that workouts to me seemed very long.

All I have to say is no matter what workout there is. Your bound to injure a certain muscle in the body If not doing it right, if using more weight than can be handle, or not fit to do it.

I decided to Google that quotation because I didn't really have any context surrounding it.  What I found was this article on NYTimes.com, which also heavily quoted Stuart McGill.

Not trying to be argumentative or anything.  I just feel like the short term "benefits" from doing crunches/sit-ups far outweigh the potential for serious back pain / issues in the future.  You only get one back.  ^^

I've done a pretty decent amount of reading on this stuff.  I mean, I'm no expert.  Just going off what I've been exposed to.  Things I look for when I read someone's advice: who are they?  What have they done?  Do they have a formal education on anatomy?  Masters?  PhD?  Have they applied their knowledge to themselves as well as their clients and had success?  They all disagree heavily on many things, but one thing most of them seem to agree on is that crunches are no good, and there are far better exercises you could be doing.

Think about it for a moment:  when would you ever in a real life situation want to mimic the motion you do when you perform a crunch?  Why try to "isolate" a single muscle?  Compare sitting at one of those bicep curling machines vs. a pull-up.  When you do the bicep curl machine, you're trying to isolate your muscle in a way that nature never intended.  Compare that to a pull-up.  It's a natural movement, one you might do when climbing a tree or a rock.  You'll improve grip strength and you'll work your forearms, your biceps, shoulders, upper back, chest, and your abs (because your abs will stabilize your movement).  Or compare doing planks or bird dogs to a crunch.  In a crunch, you're hitting a single muscle group.  Try doing bird dogs.  After about 10 reps, notice how your abs are tensing and squeezing to stabilize your body.  That's a core workout, and it's how your muscles want to work naturally. ^^

There are of course situations where isolating a muscle would be good, like in physical therapy.

I'm glad you are at least reading some stuff on this back subject, but most of the health information out there is complete @!%& and backwards.  If you do what every major health "guru" or media source said you would be perplexed as to what the right way was because they are all saying something else.  What works for one person doesn't always work for another.  doing a sit up isn't a good exercise for someone who isn't thin or has back problems.  That is fairly obvious.  For everyone else?  Who knows.. but its worked for dozens of years for many and that is all the evidence that is really needed to whether it is good (for a select people) to do, compared to another exercise.

The guy I cited is a PhD.  He knows his stuff.  ^^  The other people I rely on are trainers (usually with pretty decent educations, like a Masters or at least Bachelor's in their field) that train athletes that dead lift weights in excess of 600lbs, squats in excess of 800lbs, etc.

This is true .. to an extent.  But there are usually somewhat of a consensus on certain topics.  And I'm usually looking at what people who say, train Olympic athletes or power lifters and such have to say.  Like I said, most of them disagree on everything from rest period, how many reps, what weight, how fast you should lift, what exercises are best for hitting what area .. but almost none of them use crunches, or recommend them, and some even outright refuse to use them.

People do lots of very dangerous and stupid things and yet still live just fine.  Doesn't mean it's good advice nor does it say anything about its safety.  The fact that Ozzy Osbourne is still alive is proof that some people are impervious to things that would kill us mere mortals.  :D

I think most everyone in this thread is well under the age of 30.  Doing crunches and sit-ups isn't going to hurt you .. now.  It may never hurt you.  But where it can hurt you is down the road.  This isn't a "omg, I did crunches for a week and now my back is ruined thing" .. it's slow and gradual.

Well, if that's what people want to base their decisions on, that's perfectly fine.  People can do whatever the heck they want.  ^^  But I'm looking at what the science says and from what I have read, it says that crunches can cause long-term problems, even in people with "healthy" backs that have no prior issues.

I have still yet to hear why anyone would want to bend their lower back like that.  I mean, what activity would you do (unless you're a gymnast or something I guess) that would require you to bend your lower back in such a way?  Try lifting something really heavy with your lower back bent like how it would be when doing a crunch .. okay, I'm kidding, don't actually do that because you'll hurt yourself.

Anyways, I think I've already posted about 5 or 6 times on this topic in this thread.  I don't want to turn it into an abs debate. XD  So, I'll leave it alone now.

I run/jog at least a mile a day, but normally three or more (I only run one if I end up sleeping the afternoon away, and decide it'd be better not to go out... AKA, three in the morning). I also have MMA classes twice a week (currently with an emphasis on boxing, next is Muay Thai). Since I decided that I want to do something exercise/fitness-related with my body as a career (stuntman. I seriously want to be a stuntman), I've been taking care of my body a lot better. Pizza multiple times a week has changed to once a month, and other than that I don't eat fast food (I only ever used to have Burgerville once a month, anyways). I consume lots of water and lots of vegetables, since I'm a vegetarian who can't cook, anyways.

I actually love Portland's weather, especially when it comes to exercising. It hasn't been raining very much, so it's just...cool. And it's nice to go out running and sweat, but be kind of cooled. ♥

My next health goal needs to be getting more sleep... :-X

Spring mix salad with poppyseed dressing, topped with soy nuts and sunflowers seeds.  Then I also have a sliced Gala apple sprinkled with cinnamon. mmm~ :D

Athletes, Boxers, Jack Lalanne, Bruce Lee, ect ect ppl who are known doing sit ups/crunches for there routine.  Especially Jack Lanne Being in his 90's and lifting and swiming for his workouts. For a Guy who did around 1,033 sit ups in 23 minute at the age of 42 he didnt end up having a bad back later in life. He the oldest guy I can Think of that was old and was living proof. Jack knows his stuff. Am not saying everyone should do sit ups/crunches am just saying that that Dr. Gill is wrong he cant be saying everyone can hurt there back or whatever he says. Everyone is different Some are stronger than others.

LoL  I'm not sure whether I like golf claps or not.  :( 

Its so hard to just go running.  I'd like to run a few miles a day but I end up looking out side at the dark clouds and find myself throwing covers around me, huddling under then like a there is a monster in my room looking for me.  Is that normal  :P   But ya, some days are a big fail.

Been eating fried rice (egg + rice) and my Greek yogurt lately~ ^^

I may not be loosing weight or inches, I don't think... I don't measure myself all that often... But I feel lighter and have more energy ^^

My mom's boyfriend now actually works at Toys R Us... I think I'll ask him to pick up a hula hoop tomorrow hahaha.

Nyahaha and I have started our PE classes at school. We have it the same period, so that makes it way more fun because when we have to jog in circles we can talk.
On Tuesday we had a cardio day, and we did super fun floor aerobics. We did exercises to really fun, loud music so it was like dancing more than working out. And then today we did some strengthening pilates, oh my gosh some of those were painful. It was a great workout though.

I like the class we're taking because it actually focuses on being healthy and getting in shape rather than just running in circles and doing push-ups. I don't feel so bad about not working out because I really do try during PE and I always feel great the rest of the day.

I've also been trying to eat healthier, except I'm working costume crew (with Nyahaha aw yea) for my school's play and dear god working a crew kills your healthy eating habits. Because then I end up eating stuff like gummi worms and potato chips when I'm bored, and today we got huge Slurpees.
