Stepping out of one's comfort zone!
« on: October 01, 2010, 07:08:00 pm »
I was talking to Master Frennel, my Taekwondo instructor, the week before last. We've decided that it's time for me to go for my second degree Black Belt. The date of my Recommendation test is December (Sometime before Christmas.) then my main test is scheduled for March.

Part of completing this test involves learning some new forms called Palgwes and another form called Keumgang.

I've managed to get Keumgang down but mastering several of the Palgwes is....tricky mainly because it's hard to keep something from one form from sneaking into another. But I'll eventually get it. It's about stepping out of your comfort zone and reaching beyond your limits to improve yourself. And the road to self improvement is never an easy one.

Well that's my story, how about all of you out there? Have any of you ever done anything that involved stepping out of your comfort zone to improve yourself. If so come here and share.

Getting my license. Going back to school. Driving on the freeway by myself for the first time.  Going to Kumoricon on my own and staying in a hotel room over night.

Yeah these things don't sound like much, but I have really bad panic attacks at times. They've gotten better and I generally have them under control but certain things like elevators and stuff.... All logic just goes out the window and crippling fear takes over. D:

I did triathlons for four years when I was younger. That's harsh training in the athletics involving swimming, biking, and running. The pain of swimming miles a week, biking up mountains, and running for hours toughened me up to the degree where now I know I can do anything. My pain tolerance and strength were nil before, but even two years after winning my age-group in the biggest children's triathlon in the USA and my retirement, I feel my strength and will.

Every day of my life. I am legally Blind. Asthmatic, and allergies to cigeretts and pollen

so going out with friends or going to parties or anything going out puts me well outside my comfort zone. I just push past it. because my friends deserve a good time regardless of my comfort.

Yeah.... I kinda ran away from home.

Not in a bad way, just at 23 no job couldnt drive, my mom had promised to help me find a job and teach me to drive for years but was always too busy.  I was always being put in the mom position, cooking cleaning ect for my younger brother and at 18 he could take care of himself.
I had just recived a 500$ scolorship, got a part time job and rented a room from a friends family and moved my stuff out when my mom was on vacation.

Funny the family jokingly called me the "good daughter" because I passed my classes, cleaned up after myself, and would sometimes do the dishes.
the daughter wasn't happy about the compairsin

my mom was pretty upset but I had a fear that if she knew what I was planning she wouldnt let me take my things, and I was scarred.

But it all worked out well and chris taught me how to drive eventualy
beware!

I do a lot of things that make me feel uncomfortable. Some are small and personal and some are commonly shared (like public speaking or being afraid of heights). I personally think that it's really important to try conquering things that might stand in my way of truly living life to the fullest. That being said, for my Soc. of Deviancy course I'm expected to commit a legal act of deviance. There's a part of me that's terrified but then there's also a part of me that's really excited. It's nothing like my regular term papers so it could be a great learning experience. :D

I like meeting new people, I'm just super shy during the initial, "O hai 2 u.  My name is BLARGH.  HOW R U 2 DAY?"  Once that initial awkwardness gets out of the way, I'm like super duper wacky conversation machine.

The thing is I hate feeling like I'm reading from a script.  It's like the same ol' song and dance every time, you know?  But I guess it's ritual for a reason. ^^

Hmmmm~  using other people's showers! Something creeps me out about them...:D And I never know if I should use their conditioner or shampoo! Then there's the soap, where has that been....and if they're hard to work, I'm just staring at it like an idiot and have to call my friend to help! Then how long of a shower should I take? 5 minutes is like not even showering, but don't want to waste their water...and if you don't take a shower, you feel gross. Ahhhh difficulties~

Otherwise I can't think of anyyything~

My friend talked me into dancing on stage with her at one of the Kumoricon rave's....
That was nerve wracking, as my self confidence is LOW.

I know what you mean!

Also, another thing I've noticed is that I have a hard time carrying on a conversation with my grandma. The only time she ever calls me is to find out where my mom or sister is (because my sister and her are really tight). I'm supposed to call and thank her for a gift which is nice and well... I'm just kind of anxious about what the hell I'm going to say to her after that.
It's so weird and unnecessary to feel this way but at the same time, completely necessary to feel awkward because we've had a terrible relationship up until this point. Baaahhh :S

The last comfort zone that I've breeched was cross-dressing.  Did that back at '09 Kumoricon.

Some I will not cross:
Homosexuality - Don't mind a little joking or, depending on how, acting
Killing someone - Unless they truly, genuinly deserve it
Horses - If I ever have kids and they want to see horses, I'm getting their mother

Some that I might cross:
Golf - Horrible idea for a sport, but it's Scottish
Pirate - It'll be very unlikely that I'll dress like one (unless assigned to do so ;D)
My cosplay plans for 2022 (thus far): Vanir from Konosuba
My son's plans this year (thus far): Penguin Chiyo-chan from Azumanga Daioh

Oh yeah~! I have another thing that makes me feel really uncomfortable if I'm made to do it at con...

Heterosexual acts. Don't you guys know that it's possible to make a baby out of all that touching? DISGUSTING! No offense, heteros, but it's kind of weird.

Meganyouaresodumbsometimes.

This one time I hung out with Maddy, and Colleen, and Sahooha, AND MY BANGS WERE PULLED BACK, AND I WASN'T WEARING MAKE-UP.
That took some courage, and I'll probably never do it again.
But I felt as though I had stepped out of my comfort zone for sure.

Foreign exchange to Japan for 10 months just to see what it's like (for real, rather than advertised).

Family/friends nowhere in sight (naturally). Everyone in sight treating you different. Learned a lot about myself. Learned a lot about human psychology. But mostly learned that we're all pretty much alike on the inside.

That's about as far outside the zone I'm gonna go me thinks, and every step since has been weak sauce in comparison.

I remember one time I was staying in Nyuzen, Japan and I felt like such a foreigner. Then I found a huge, stereotypical American biker in a Japanese biker gang at the buffet that my host family had taken me to. We walked over to each other and embraced.
Very few words were exchanged.
My Japanese family asked if I knew him and I was like, "Oh, that guy? No." Lol.

As I've so often said stepping out of one's comfort zone isn't easy. Espcially when one is on the road to self-improvement. But sometimes you can't be afraid to just go for it!

Always feel like they're gonna attack and come at me from a blind spot.
