I wrote an article about Anime conventions and why they are so beloved and important to the culture. Pass it along to them, maybe it will help open their eyes, heh.

The Joys of Anime Conventions

It's just a little article, but I think it might be a good introduction for those stuck on the outside.

(And this isn't the article I started that other thread about, that will be for an article about Kumoricon specifically, I think.)

Thanks, you two! ^_^

Yeah, I just want to give some people an opportunity to understand why it is us "goofy nerds" enjoy all this so much. I am sure everyone has at least one person like that in their life, who just laughs at it and mocks (I certainly do, haha), so it was for them that I wrote it.

Thanks again  ;D

Actually, oddly enough .. never had that happen.  Neither of my parents have said anything negative about it.  No one in my family has.  Heck, most of my family likes anime.  My dad wanted to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion when he broke his leg. ^^  We watched Akira together when I was pretty young, and one thing I remember was he asked me, "Do you appreciate the art?"  I had never really thought about that before.  I just thought it was bad ass.  It took my perspective and changed it to where I'm not just watching something, but appreciating it.  (I think if more people took this perspective to things in life, we'd get a lot more enjoyment out of our entertainment.)

Anyways, even my friends have been cool about me dressing up like a girl at anime conventions ;) My buddy, who is the keyboardist in Ceremonial Castings (I know Eve at least knows of 'em), has a girlfriend who set one of the pics of me in a dress as their background for like a week or two.  It was hilarious.  Especially since their computer is always on, and right in the kitchen where everyone walks through. xD

I will definitely check out this article sometime, thanks. My parents have been quite down on me the whole 8 years for putting so vastly much time, energy, money into conventions that could've gone to things like getting additional jobs (this even when I used to work 3 part-time jobs). Thanks for the help.

That's really cool, Reppy, and you're right, I do know about Ceremonial Castings. They're one of my favorite local bands, and I just think that's awesome that you have such a tight circle of support. More people need that in their lives.

That's unfortunate, Rem. It's sad when certain people can't see the significance and value of joy and personal satisfaction. Something may seem silly, but if it brings true joy and happiness, why spurn that?

I like it !

Thanks! ^_^

I agree...but not every moment of staffing is always joy. Almost, though! :)

Yeah, but do the negative aspects outweigh the positives? If so and someone were still choosing to put their money and time toward the event, then I could see people's objections, but if not, then their choices should be respected. Oh, well, people be buggin'.

It's not bad, but it wouldn't work on my older sister or my father.  They're so high-uppety on being anti-nerd that your article wouldn't do a thing to convince them differently.

That's too bad. You can't win them all. At least you're able to do your thing in peace (right?).

Clearly they just need to hang out with more for about an hour or two.

@ Eve: Usually. When anyone tries to make things hard on me / others and turn a given event into Dramacon, if I can't resolve the situation I just wait it out, remembering the 13 other cons I've worked in the past 7 years....

Yeah, I do.  I don't see my sister that much anymore (that and the last time she tried to belittle me for liking anime, I put her in her place), and I almost never see my dad.  Plus, his health is kinda poor right now, so when I do see him, we usually talk about healthcare, fishing, politics, or family.

Clearly they just need to hang out with more for about an hour or two.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!  Oh, wait, are you being serious?  No, bad idea, especially my dad.  Bad idea!

You know, I've never understood putting down someone for what they like.  Really.  It makes no sense to me.

Would you put someone down for what food they liked?  Like, if someone was a big fan of Mexican food .. would you insult them endlessly for it?  What if they went to somewhere that --gasp-- only served Mexican food?!

Then again, there are some things that make no sense to me and I have no wish to participate in.  Example: wine tastings.  Could not care less.  Zero interest.  I have zero interest in alcohol, don't want to hang out with people when the central focus is alcohol, and frankly .. I don't have anything else to say, so I shouldn't have said "and" .. ahem, anyways .. I don't go around insulting people that enjoy alcohol.  I'm not walking up to someone with a Guiness beer shirt and insulting them for, you know, liking beer.  I'm not insulting my sister for liking wine.  Okay, I might give her a little bit of crap in the future, just for fun, but I'm not going to berate her over it.

It's called being narrow minded.  I think it runs in both sides of my family, with an extra dose in my father.  Believe it or not, I'm pretty narrow minded, too; I'm just a lot nicer about it, especially since I've realized that I really have no place critisizing others.

As for the wine tasting, I have no problem with it, except for the part where you have to spit it out.  I guess it's to avoid having people getting drunk, or something, but drinks should be for drinking, ya know?  At least not all wine tasting events do that...
