We all have something that bugs us, something that we found just especially annoying about the con this year.
So I think it's time to vent. What did you find annoying during the con.
But let's not name any names, or attack anyone, just vent what annoyed us.

I'll start:
On Day 2 the Staff member who had to keep the head count for the gaming area, didn't and then this lead to the fire marshall kicking everyone out, in order for the head count to start over. This irked me a lot.

That was actually a result of attendees exiting through the entrance of gaming. It got our count off by 5-10 an hour which eventually lead to us needing to reset the count. With the last minute change of gaming to the sub parking area from the Executive Tower we were caught a little off guard with the fire codes issues. I'm sorry for any irks this caused

When I went down to gaming the first night after the rave, I was treated very rudely by people running it down there

I was sent in the wrong direction to find a game when I was at the right spot
Then I asked someone else, but they ignored me, sat down and talked with a bunch of people, then five minutes later turned around and said, "Oh, did you want something?" then they looked annoyed to help, and I got attitude the rest of the time

I was down at the ballroom floor. A boy and a girl were connected by a chain at the waist. A staffer/yojimbo started screaming at them to take it off. From what I can tell, they stopped immediately to remove it but he started screaming at them again to "Take it off!!!!!!"

Not really sure about the context surrounding the situation, but I didn't think it was necessary and made me feel a little uncomfortable.

Not what irked me, but what may have irked an attendee: I accidentally gave the wrong floor for a certain hotel event room when asked, sending the attendee in the wrong vertical direction. I realized it about 30 seconds later, but it was too late. Sorry. :(

People who are loud and film stupid videos in the hallway when people are trying to sleep, and then make another video making fun of the people who yell at them for being annoying. And then proceed to put said video up on youtube. :/

QFT.

I feel like I'm being kinda rude by saying it, but the prizes for the Cosplay Contest left a lot to be desired. I'm happy with what I picked, yes, but the fact that it was all I could find that I found worth taking as a prize somewhat irked me. From what I saw there were second volumes of DVD sets, second volumes of manga, figmas from a show I've never heard of, and forgive me if I'm wrong but I do believe I saw magazine inserts that looked like they had just been torn right out of a magazine. The socks looked comfy, yeah, but what if you don't like socks? What are you stuck with then? A Sgt. Frog keychain barely worth the paper your prize receipt was printed on? How to Draw Manga? A pile of Soul Eater wall scrolls?

Wow, that was really kinda rude and I'm really sorry but it had to be said.

This one's on behalf of my sister-

She tried to quickly use the restroom on the lobby level as I held her spot in line for one of the main events. She came back upset and told me that a Kumoricon staff member told her she couldn't use it, that it was for hotel guests only. She tried to tell the staff member that she IS (and WAS) paying to stay at this hotel, which the staff member then replied that it was for non convention hotel members.

This also pisses me off (and was one of the only things to do so at the con)
First off, she is a paying a hotel attendee, why the hell should the fact she had a costume on her not allow her to go to the bathroom? And that hotel was blocked for us anyway!!! For pete sake, someone has to go to the bathroom, why should something that stupid matter? That is a potential health problem!

Mine x2-
Trying to get down to the Kumori Ball was slightly annoying. I kept trying to tell the staff member at the escalator I was a volunteer for the event who had signed up on the forums, not a Kumoricon official volunteer.

Just to clarify about that, because people still don't understand.
The hotel requested that we station someone there to control traffic flow, as well as bathroom access.
During the times that the Hotel Bar/Restaurant were open, we were told to limit access to anyone who was with the convention. BUT we were also told to use our discretion. If you really had to go, there shouldn't of been a problem with letting you go. (But then again it's a heard mentality, one person goes, tons go)
The bathroom in question is the ONLY one available for non-con attendees, so it had to get some priority.

Then there are the hundreds of people who said they wanted to go to the bathroom, but really just wanted to go down the up escalator.

That's odd, cause she was also told she could go down the escalators to use the restroom down there. She also came from the correct side, not walking past the sign that said, exit only or whatever it said. If she argued about going, it should have been made clear she really did have to go, and she was also in a rush to go. But she ended up holding it so she wouldn't lose her spot in line, which is not healthy.

I told her she should of just stripped her costume right there and seen if that was good enough (she wasn't even in full out cosplay, she was a homemade Hogwarts student) I don't like the whole "non-costume priority" thing when someone is still a paying guest.

As I said it had nothing to do with costumes, though, I didn't deal with the person sitting at the top of the escalators but I assume there job was basically 'Dont let anyone cross the divider'
Also, we do not have access to the hotel's records, so we can't verify who is a guest and who is not. BUT I can say that EVERY room in the main tower was rented out to a con goer which is one of the main reasons this year went a lot smoother.

Like I said, they were told to use there discretion, the lobby bathrooms were prioritized for restaurant/bar patrons as those are the only bathrooms on the level. If I was there and saw someone doing the pee dance, i'd prolly of let them through. Anyways she had the option of going up stairs, the restrooms on the plaza level are no more then a 1 min walk from the top of the lobby escalators.

This is one of the major complaints about this year, I just want people who complain about it to understand why it was done.

The hotel staff member in the suit that stalked around the escalators on the lobby floor...same guy that was there last year. I just have to say it...does he have something shoved so far up is *** that is in permanently inclined to act like a total jerk to everyone? Last year I had issues with the same guy & his attitude toward con goers. The only time I hed to walk through that area all weekend(I wasn't aware we weren't supposed to have a mask on in that 10 foot stretch of hallway),  he started screaming at me to take it off NOW. My friend had to try to explain to him just how hard it is to get my mask on/off because of how it was attached in the back(takes 2 peoples help to put it on or take it off...modifications are in process to fix this) & that we wouldn't have walked that way if we were aware. With only 5 feet to go until I was out of the area in question, he still continued to badger me & my friends until I just got mad, ignored him, & walked away.

Now I can understand if there was a rule & someone was just trying to enforce it...but to be a total dick to someone paying to stay at the hotel as well as to be at the convention...uncalled for. My friends & I were very polite trying to explain to him that we didn't know & would leave right away so that we didn't have to mess with it...but still, a jerk. That guy needs to be fired...there is no excuse for that kind of behavior in a business that deals with people.

The only other complaint I had was with one staff member that was on an elevator. It was only 1/2 full when it opened & 2 people tried to get on...he then proceeded to scream at them & point his badge RIGHT in their face saying "ONLY 1!!!" repeatedly in the rudest way. Once again, un-called for. I realize that the elevators once again create a stressful bottleneck in that hotel(which is why I took the stairs 11 floors with heavy camera equipment & extremely warm coslplay), but there is no reason to dis-respect people like that.

Other than those 2 situations, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about staff, yojimbo, hotel staff, & the con in general. This year was incredibly fun for everyone that went with me as well as myself. I had awsome interactions with staff members on & off the elevators throughout the con(I was the "paparazzi" with the big Canon camera that was snapping pictures of people on the elevators :D). They were amazingly helpful when providing me with information or just someone to stop & "shoot the ****" with. Hotel staff was super helpful, polite, & just eager to please. Keep up the great work staff...you really made this years Kumoricon a memorable experience for my G/F, myself, & the 3 con/anime noob friends that attended with us. They liked it so much that they are already planning to make cosplays to wear when they join us next year.

So...in regards to the bathroom problems, I want to point out that there's a bathroom in every hotel room.  The Bathrooms in the Lobbies and Event space were added to the blueprints of the hotel to serve customers attending events, conventions, and meetings at the hotel.  They should have absolute priority for such customers not just regardless of whether they are paying for a room at the hotel, but particularly if they're not.  Most people are capable of waiting 1-5 minutes to get to their room in order to use a toilet.  The hotel had no logical justification in restricting that bathroom from convention use; they did it to spite the convention in order to demonstrate their belief that they are a superior, privileged class of society.  They made a good-sounding rationalization but it doesn't hold up in a rational argument.  I'm glad we're through with a terrible hotel that is not interested in providing excellent service to a major source of revenue.

Oh, that's what happen. I heard differently. Still it was an annoyance.

As one of the staff members who was trying to keep count at either the entrance or the exit that day, I can tell you that pepito pretty much nailed it, and you have my personal apologies that we weren't able to foresee and prevent it. There was some confusion over people coming back out through the entrance, despite the fact we had a sign posted and a volunteer trying to get people to go out the correct exit door. (If we have to split exit/entrance again, we'll try to post bigger signs and get everyone on the same page for counting methodology.)

As a result, the count we had was at 200 (the maximum for fire code). If that had been true, fire code would have mandated that we let no one else in until people left, and we did have to briefly stop traffic for that reason. The count reset was because we didn't think we really had 200 people in the room, and we didn't want to stop people from coming in when it wasn't necessary.

The fire marshal wasn't there when this happened, and didn't directly have anything to do with it. He was in the building earlier that day, but not right then AFAIK. (Cheesing off the fire marshal, who can shut the convention down, is a Very Bad Idea. We try to err on the side of caution.)

If there's anything more you want to know about it, PM me? I have to confess I'm kinda curious what you did hear, and from whom.

Edited: Fixed a misleading assertion after getting correct information from Rathany.

Honestly I had a really great time at con this year but I have to beg that we don't use that hotel again, the layout absolutely sucks for a convention. Everything was confusing and the reception sucked. However I had no issues with the hotel staff this year and a couple of them actually were joking with my friends (one told us someone lost a snake in the lobby but we'd already heard that it was a joke so he was bummed. XD), they were fun. @.@
I miss 2010.

The glomp circle in Pioneer Square. That's all fine and dandy if you wanna do that, but to yell out, "EVERYBODY GLOMP *INSERT CHARACTER HERE*!!!1111!!!" And then chase that person down when they're NOT EVEN IN THE CIRCLE is unacceptable.

When my Depp group and I walked into the Square for a photoshoot this happened to all of us. And our Hatter has a fragile costume, so that really pissed me off. When they tried to do it to me a second time I yelled at them to back the hell off and glared at them for all I was worth.

Seriously, how could they think it was acceptable to do that?

THAT. IS. NOT. OK.

(By the way, guys - there are a lot of reasons we don't pull fire alarms for the lulz. Cheesing off the fire marshal, who can shut the convention down, is one of them.)

While this is true, before rumors start, the fire alarm going off was not due to our attendees.  As of the last time I spoke with the hotel people, it was due to a leaking pipe.  (Hotelchan, correct me if this turns out to be wrong.)

FWIW, people - not only is it not okay, forcibly grabbing someone against their will is *grounds for arrest*.

Always make sure you have the person you want to hug's consent, whether it's implied consent by being in - repeat, in, not near - a glomp circle, or express consent (either ask, or stand back with your arms spread slightly and wait for them to nod).

The hotell staff were being complete tards to me and a frind of mine. I think i already said this, but we were trying to look for the Fountain plaza to get to the Anime spin the bottle and when we asked the hotel staff where Fountain plaza was, they pointed us in the wrong direction and we ended up looking two hours for this place what we wern't even close too.

You are right, a leaky pipe in the Dealers area cause the fire systems water pressure to dip below nominal levels and that is why the alarm went off. Standard procedure, doesn't happen often, but it is one of the weird safety features that can cause issues when the hotel is full of people.

In regards to all the mis-communications and mis-directions and bad experiences with staff, I am sorry. We tried our best to prepare hotel staff and our staff for the masses and the questions. Bad information happens too much around here, we are trying harder to fix that. Though I know in Downtown Portland, too many things are named similarly, when you think of Fountain Plaza, my first though was what is actually now named Teacher's Fountain in the Plaza section of Director Park. I don't know why I think that, but I did. Hopefully things will be more clear cut in Vancouver, less confusion.

Yes, thank you!
A customer is a customer, that is all that should matter

Could anyone let us know who specifically was prioritizing the bathrooms for 'restaurant' patrons.  The restaurant in the main tower was closed most of the time for our use.  Upper management of the hotel was very clear on the fact that nothing was supposed to be prioritized over attendees.

I know this is likely too little too late, but if things like this happen, noting the time and the name really helps us.  Thanks :)

When my sister was turned away, it was a few minutes before the convention started the seating for the Cosplay Contest. My sister said she was turned away by a girl on con staff, sitting at the top of the escalators, with wavy brown hair and possibly wearing glasses.

I had a little bit of an issue with the glomp circle as well. I was cosplaying Yoko and it was hard enough just trying to keep my 40in ponytail clip on without having to catch people who are in full on glomp mode. It was seriously frustrating. i wanted to play for a while until a guy came flying in my direction i almost dropped some things off me that would have broke! come on guys if your costume is fragile and they say so friggin listen and only hug! glomping can be pretty dangerous.

Yeah, I'd have to agree, the glomp circle was a problem. I'm not a fan of them in general, but I don't usually take issue with them, but this one was ridiculous. I walked through Pioneer with a couple friends just trying to get to Starbucks, and along the way, we got MOBBED. At the time, I was carrying a rather expensive camera and my friend was was wearing a costume taped to her skin, so pulling it hurt.

Also, one annoyance that's also kind of a safety concern thing, a group of my friends and I had an encounter with a man who had no badge and took unauthorized pictures of one of us in an awkward situation under the pretense of being a "con staff member." We asked him to delete the unauthorized pictures because he had no badge IN FRONT of two male staffers and they did absolutely NOTHING. At all. They were more interested in comparing cameras than checking out this guy who was taking sketch pictures of young females pretending to be staff. We took care of the situation with the help of a couple lovely staffers, but still.

Sadly in situations such as the above - not all staff know how to respond, if you have this happen in the future tell a staffer to get thier Manager or Director there right away. We got this situation taken care of, but I would have slept better if we could have got it resolved much quicker

I am going to have to concur about the Game. It's just annoying at this point, especially when people yell that they lost the game every two minutes. Same goes for Marco Polo or whatever. Sure, it was funny the first time, but please!

What I found the most annoying?
On Saturday, my small group was running late to the Hetalia Photoshoot, so we tried to ask the Staff in the Executive Towers (since that was where our room was) if they knew where Fountain Plaza was, since we'd left our Con stuff, and subsequently, our maps in our room.  Even after explaining that it was a photoshoot, they insisted that it was probably a floor in the main building. After getting frustrated, we were three blocks down and two blocks across from the one we wanted, and finally made it half an hour late after getting directions from a random biker. So at least it had a happy ending.

Oh, and how the people in line behind us for the KumoriBall let their friends/parents cut in line after we could have let a friend/acquaintance cut.

Other than that, I really enjoyed KumoriCon~

cosplay contest judging and prizes.
:<
they need to be better.

I agree so much, the cosplay contest was the most dissapointing thing of my KCon experience. The skit selection and judging results left me feeling very annoyed.

Also, as far as the game and other loud things go, I think staff should start making a negative example out of people who scream it. Like, maybe even kick people out after one warning or something. There's no reason why people should be allowed to act so disruptive and inconsiderate.

I think everything was delightful..

EXCEPT...

There was this older man with a beard, in a blue shirt with a camera around his neck, across the street and pointing and shooting pictures of everybody, and it seemed all creepy-like, he paced and tried to be discreet.

He was on the other side, staring at the con-goers, pacing, and then he'd aim up the camera and take a picture.

And I saw this from my hotel room upper window, he did this for a few hours!

Not that I have a problem with taking cosplay pictures--but usually you get to be asked, or you're aware of it.

Some creepy dude across the street, trying to act nonchalant kinda freaked me out, why was he trying to be sneaky?

And as far as I know, there aren't any "Candid Street Shot" galleries that have been posted!

The other issue,
was the fact that the hotel was organized like a Labyrinth. But then again, at after-hours in the ballroom, they DID play "Magic Dance" by David Bowie, so it seemed fitting.

Maybe it was a regular attendee that was .. just .. cosplaying as a total creeper dude. D:  [/wishful thinking]

Yeah. That's pretty freaky.

I actually heard a story about some old guy in sweats (not sure if he was an attendee or not) who was watching a photo shoot that was .. umm .. lets just say the flag was at full mast and anyone that looked could tell? ^^;

*shudders, then vomits a little in his mouth*

As fun as it is it to be cute and adorable.. these are the times when I'm really thankful to be a guy. ^^;;;

(I should have asked someone about the disabled line...my fault there...) Perhaps there could be water available for those super long lines? I really struggled through that pre-reg line with the heat, lack of water, and dealing with my difficulties standing for long periods of time...When I was nearing the reg tables, I found I really needed to lean against the wall...I was feeling pretty sick at that point. (dehydration) And I thought I heard someone say "no leaning against the wall"...Eh...I really needed to as I felt I was going to faint!! I just complied and silently grumbled to myself at the irritation, hoping I wouldn't fall over...I was too sick to go to the pre-party, and didn't feel well into part of day 1...After the convention, I told my mom about my symptoms and she said I may have needed to go to the hospital for fluids... :P

I will definitely ask for help next time, but a couple water stations along the way might help!

I know a few other people have picked on this topic, but "The Game" and the whole "Marco Polo" thing are pretty much over. ^^

They don't really annoy me per se.  I understand that a lot of people that are into "The Game" are young kids and maybe it's new to them, they don't understand it could be annoying, etc.  That said, I would be ecstatic if I never heard another "YOU JUST LOST THE GAME" or "MARCO!" "POLO!" again. ^^

And was it just me, or was this year's convention really loud?  I was having difficulty understanding what people were saying.  Maybe I've gone to too many metal concerts this year (wtf! I wear ear plugs!) or I'm just getting old (d0f!), but it didn't seem that bad last year. ^^;

Ah yes, but sometimes the adorables get eaten first! *hides from creepies*

As I was thinking, I remembered something else.

Not to sound arrogant....but I went as a VIP, and yes, the lines were skipped---
but the wait time for events was still quite long--and think chairs, just a few, by the front of the line would have been nice.

Why do I say this? Because (not being the bravest sort) I found it difficult to "assert my VIP status" ....when sometimes ordered to go to the back of the line by a stern staff member. *squirm*

I would have found it easier just to be in a reserved "spot" and then be verified, rather than direct confrontation by someone who is (understandably) stressed and has a lot on their mind.

What I would have liked, is to have had an actual "place" to sit at, rather then be told: "Uh, you're VIP? why didn't you speak up?" (because I'm a chicken) "Just, uh, sit...somewhere over there....in front of everyone else."

AWKWARD. *avoids eyes*

The badges should have been glittery or something....just being vertical wasn't enough to stand out.

Yes, chairs and ostentatious badges. I think that's all. :3

I get especially awkward around my favorite FMA VAs.

THAT. IS. NOT. OK.
I remember this! Wasnt jack like being chased after a group of people. I seriously felt sorry for them. I don't mind getting hugs. but seriously? i walk into the glomp circle as hunny senpai and get not only glomp attacked, i was terrified. i mean, come on! even hunny would want to run away. and hes an attention whore. on another note, about those creepers... it was day zero when this guy came up to me while i was waiting for the max so i could go home and get as much sleep as i could. I wasnt even in cosplay. anywho, this really creepy guy started talking to me and i was being polite and talking back... until he started to look at me. and i mean i felt like he knew what i looked like naked kind of looking. I would've just walked away then and there except that the max was like a stop away. Anyways, the guy kept getting closer and closer to me until i had to take a step back just to have some space. and right when the max pulls up to the stop place, he caresses my elbow and says "you wanna have fun tonight?" i back out of the caress and tell no thank you and run into a different car than him. When I got inside, I could still feel his caress. and it creeped me out! I almost bleached my elbow when I got home. but I settled for a scrubbing. For all you girls, please be careful around guys or girls. if you get a creepy vibe from them, just walk away or go somewhere safe. The con staff room, or a store is a good example.

Yeah, our Jack got chased. :/ What the hell. I was absolutely appalled at what happened. I felt bad for him too, but we all ended up getting it. Luckily the Hatter and I weren't chased, but still. It was all against our will, and that's illegal. We also all put a lot of time/money into our costumes, so if anything would have happened to them because of that incident I would have been furious.

I dunno...yell out "Stop it! I don't know you! Hands off! Get away from me!" He should know better! (I know the whole thing about how it can be twisted into me assaulting the dude...but I would have felt threatened, and therefore justified in my actions) >:(

Or...I'd hit him with mace...or threaten to call the police if he didn't back off NOW!

I'm relieved you're ok!  That just sounded really scary! That reminded me of the time I was on a family trip...we stopped at a gas station for a bathroom break. I went in the store to ask for the key. (It was my assumption it was locked) The worker dude put his ARM around my shoulders...telling me it was always unlocked...

Strange old dude touching me freaked me out...but I was too scared to say anything...(I don't remember how old I was when this happened...teenager maybe...I was just caught off guard and froze... >.< ) you tell yourself you'd react a certain way if something happens...but since you never know when or if...

cosplay contest judging and prizes.
:<
they need to be better.

Unfortunately, the prize selections were dictated by what was donated to Kumoricon. I'm sorry that it wasn't what you wanted, but donations and promotional materials being what they are, that's the best that was available. (also, those who picked up their items earlier likely picked the "better" items...). I have no control over what's available for prizes - at least you were able to select items for your prize - in previous years the judges had to pick the items for you and THAT was rather difficult given the selection that's available. At least you got a very nice plaque with your name on it that you can display (those plaques are custom made by programming staff who spent many hours making them.  CHEERS to the staff who made the 44 plaques rather than spending time enjoying the convention)

I APPRECIATED THE PLAQUE VERY MUCH. :>
I was slightly annoyed with the prizes. But I was more angry about the skit selection/judging.
Sorry if I went harsh on the prizes orz.

I threw around the idea of something like gift cards to fabric selling establishments back at Sak, which got kinda put on the back burner.

Well, so far, we have never bought prizes per se, but if we have a general idea of what is wanted we can give it a try :)

Though, socks, wall scrolls, anime and manga make for at least a decent selection for an anime con I think.  I just checked with the person who was in charge of handing out prizes and the DVDs only should have been given out as sets, not leaving random volumes.  Any remaining sets we will tape together to make sure they go out as a set.

Honestly, I don't think there should be a glomp circle anymore but that's just me.
I'm against it because I was knocked over so hard a couple years ago that someone broke my ankle.

This is one of the reasons why we've never allowed this, or certain other events, to be official things.  We can't control what attendees do on their own time, off-site.  But, we do urge them to be very careful and to leave if things get uncomfortable.

Here's my complaint: Why does everything have to be gay? I'm tired of liking something, like Hetalia (and others this is just the first thing that came to mind), and having to bear the frustration of "OMG XX AND XX 4 EVAAAAARRRR!!!!" I just like the show and comic for what it is.

And I hate The Game. For the entirety of 2008 it was "You lost the game!!" with my response "What is The Game?" Every time for that entire convention the answer was "OMG YOU LOST AGAIN!!" followed by getting laughed at. Finally in 2009, my friend courteously explained to me what the game was, it wasn't funny and I was pissed no one took the time to explain it to me in the first place.

Basically my complaints boil down to this: I am no longer 16. At the age of 24 I realize that I am something of a grandma at these conventions.

As far as unwanted attack glomps go, I got one this year, and I politely asked that person not to do it again. They turned out to be an understanding sweetheart and were just caught in the moment. I have a feeling that if you guys do that to your glompers, you'll probably get the same results :) All worked out really well in the end.

As far as group attack glomps go, all I can say is -> o.o;
That's a new one to me. Scary.

Some people just don't think beyond the moment or beyond themselves. That's really what most of this is. Usually if you point it out people are nice about it.

Haha, being picked up can be creepy when it's someone you don't know.

There was a guy who asked me for a hug.  I said OK, and when he gave the hug he picked me up off the ground.  This isn't a good idea.  I was carrying very expensive photo equipment.  If he had lost his balance and we fell and stuff got broken, it would have been a disaster.

I believe the person did it in a spirit of having fun, and meant nothing bad by it, but please don't do this.

Pre-registration Friday DX I had pre-registered beforehand but my brothers and a couple friends hadn't so they needed to buy at-the-door passes for the weekend.
It kinda sucked after waiting in line for a couple hours to get myself checked in, only to find that the new registrants didn't have to wait until 6:00 PM to start lining up.

I had to wait a couple more hours to get the rest of my group settled in ;A;

I think next year, they should have everybody start lining up at 4:00, whether you pre-registered or not, but have a few people work their way down the SINGLE line with clipboards,
forms and writing utensils for the new registrants. It IS a little unfair to those who pre-registered many months ahead, but what's the point for them really if you only save a couple hours of line-waiting?

That's because sleeping in a hotel, that your not a guest in is technically vagrancy, which is illegal.

It wasn't vagrancy when your sleeping in rented con space and given permission.

You were misinformed... there was no sleeping in con space allowed, period.  Con staff should have been fully aware of this, and we will be sure to reiterate that for next year's staff as well.

The lobby was public space, not con space.  They did not need a badge to be there.

I found this out myself several years ago. I was lucky - the person was a sweetheart about it and explained to me, just like you're doing now, that to some people it's really uncomfortable (or even scary). It gave me a chance to learn better.

When someone cares enough to give you the benefit of the doubt and explain a situation to you so that you don't repeat a mistake, it's good to listen. It beats the heck out of finding out later that you hurt someone's feelings and don't have a chance to take it back.

Sometimes I wonder whether talking about things like this would make a good 30-minute panel. Almost no one at Kumoricon wants to hurt or scare others, I'm sure of it. But when it comes to stuff like this, there's a lot of room for misunderstanding what the boundaries are.

Just for the record, I like the whole hugs and high-fives thing at the con.  I like the "free hugs" people, it's a fun thing.  I have no problem at all with the general idea of it, but it's important to consider safety especially when interacting with people you don't know.

Okay, wearing my predator suit was a pain already, but getting glomped? Not *****g cool. This idiot grabbed me and pulled off one of my dreads and i actually punched him because my brother told him that i cant hug because of the ventilation in the suit and everything took months to make. The  bastard looked stunned, i don't even want to go to next year because people don't seem to understand the word no.

If i see him next year im not going to be nice, he received warnings but still wouldn't back off. To the people that asked to hug thank you, even though i said no i appreciate that you asked my brother or me first.

Yeah.....i was told to go wait in line AGAIN during saturday even though i was already registered friday night and good to go, some of the staff wouldnt let me inside. After i reached the front again, i guess a  staff member that was educated freaked out and kept apologizing for me waiting in line again. Dont plan on going again next year, was a waste of time. Oh no, I am so sorry. Your outfit was amazing.
I am surprised though, that somebody wanted to hug YOU looking in character.
I saw you in the hall next to me, and I was getting the creepy chills. You were so real-looking!

Your costume was very well done, and I was very impressed to see you. Please don't let some silly, over-excited otaku ruin your opportunity to be awesome. Not everybody understands how long it takes to make a well-done outfit, or how fragile they can be.

Although, as "alarming" punching someone was, technically you maintained character....maybe next year you should have someone go in front with a sign, and say "Hugs = DIE"

That way, everybody is happy. Or scared of you, which is what you were going for...

I know why it worked the way it did this year but-

Can we please have escelators that go up and down like the natural flow of traffic in America next year? I don't know how many people I asked to go up the "correct" way only to have them ignore me or give a general attitude about how "no one is coming down this way" while walking back up the "correct" way.

Actually, we did.  We had the 'How To Con' panel on convention etiquette from someone who goes to many cons a year due to her job.

Just my thought - but I still think it would be a good idea to have this as its own panel. I don't know if others could have guessed it, but I wouldn't have thought that "How To Con" would be about glomping.

  • This is arguably the second biggest problem people have with each other at cons (HOBO being first by a mile). Other issues like the Game, oversize props, etc may be more common, but they don't have nearly as much potential for hurting someone's feelings or pushing their boundaries. It deserves to be discussed on its own rather than as one segment of a very broad panel.
  • I know that as a matter of legal liability, the con can't even appear to be endorsing the glomp circle. But they need a meetup spot somewhere, whether we have this panel or not. If they decide that this panel would be a good one, it would be perfect.
  • "Hugs 101" sounds like, and can be, a quick and fun panel. The more fun it sounds, the more people come. The more people come, the less likely we are to see repeats of what happened to Shadow, IchigoBunny, xkuroxhanax, steelychan, FateChooseMe, lychee-twist, ironmonkey, beast, and even myself.
(I was on the wrong end of someone proving their masculinity by bear-hugging me as hard as they could. Impressing people by hurting them may work in Naruto or Nanoha, but not so much in real life.)

Well, if you have someone to run such a panel, you can have it happen next year.

Though, a glomp circle can't be a panel activity, as far as I know.  It would just be a con etiquette panel focused on touching.

Thank you for the advice. :)  I've been thinking about it, and have a few people in mind who would be perfect if I can con them into it sometime before next year.

And I completely agree - heck, we can't even directly suggest that this be a meetup spot for the glomp circle, let alone make it part of the panel. I was thinking more along the lines of a scripted panelist demonstration of what to do as well as what to NOT do, and a discussion after. (The demo would include every example listed so far, so please keep listing 'em.)

This... kinda scares me :o

The Fangirl/Fanboy Support Panel also had rules and etiquette on glomping, and demos of how to do it correctly (or at least it did the first year it ran, which ironically was at the Vancouver Hilton).

Yes the glomp circle at the square my god were they imature me and my black butler gang were there to you know just relax and they attack us, now I was carrying a tray that had breakables on it that could fall off and shatter and they thought it was all a big joke they chased two of my friends down the block and proceeded to attack the ciel we had with us, then one of the kids had the nerve to come up to my friend who was holding my tray of breakables and started to touch it, she was being rather rude about it as will, exspecially when we told her to back off, she did not ask for a hug but she proceeded to attack us with hugs that we did not give permission to take, and then on top of that all she had the intent to break the things on my tray trying to tip it over.

The decision for whether to allow it or forbid it is likely to be yours, so your opinion particularly matters.

My main thought about the subject is that with the number of horror stories in this thread alone, it might be good to focus on the problem specifically instead of hoping people will know which panel might mention it. (Con horror stories seem to be like bugs - for every one you see, it has ten buddies hiding behind the wall.)

More to the point, it might be good to use the title mentioned to draw in the kind of people who need the advice. The kind of people who'd be thoughtful/perspicacious enough to attend a lecture on con etiquette probably aren't the ones we need to worry about.

Eh, no worries... it was the phrasing that I found... interesting ;)

The idea for the panel is a good one.  Like I said before, we have had a panel that discussed this issue.  Maybe it's time for another one.. con is supposed to be fun and safe, not a place where cosplayers need to worry about being accidentally hurt.

Some signs on the main doors and stairwells pointing out you can break people's costumes and bones that way would be good too.

Also, what of sending someone into the middle of the circle with a megaphone to remind them how to play nice?  The circles seem fun when they're not getting crazy (I walked past the one last year several times and was never bothered- I must give off "don't touch me" vibes or something...)

Unfortunately, having staff there to watch would imply that we're taking some degree of responsibility for what happens. That would be a liability nightmare. Not to mention that when a staff member steps outside con space, for all intents and purposes (in this case) they stop being a staff member.

However, and this is one of the things I'd like to see discussed in a panel on the subject: There is nothing to stop attendees from reminding each other to play nice. The reason staff members join Kumori is because we love it and want it to continue, so we agree to take some responsibility for it. If people feel the same way about the glomp circles, then someone has to help with self-policing the behavior.

You don't have to make people behave; I sincerely believe that 99% of Kumoricon attendees are good-hearted people who would hate to hurt their fellow attendees. Just remind them of that, and that takes care of the problem almost every time.

Just saying- trying to ban glomping will be like Kumoricon kicking themselves- a big mess with lots of complaining
(Remembers one year where signs were no longer allowed....ahhh the complaints on the forums.....)

The con has panels that mention glomping
And talks about glomping in their program book

That's really all they can do.
Maybe add some signs around con space, or even put another warning right inside the pocket guide itself

I don't think anyone is trying to ban glomping.  But, if it's causing this many problems then we need to find a good way to improve things.

Reading the past few pages, the issue of "glomping" appears to be interesting.

I think when it comes down to it, it needs to be as simple as this, use your best judgment and, if you want to push it even further, do it to people you know.

When I read about the circle that Jacob_Blackfeather had mentioned, because it was in public and off hotel property (aka con property), it can be seen as assault. There is no gray area.  If it was on con property, then it would be handled by con security of course, or hotel security depending on how severe, and dealt with accordingly, I would believe.

Perhaps for future events, Staff need to make a mention in the book involving glomping and basically say that "You may do it, but if it's seen as causing a disturbance in con space, security has the right to ask you to stop, or remove you from said building etc. And in severe cases, K-con reserves the right to remove you from the entirety of con.  Please use your best judgment before engaging in any activity."

I mean its best to ask yourself.  Do I know them?  If the answer is no, then don't do it. It's as simple as that, some people have insane reflexes and if they see someone they don't know charging after them, they could react defensively, like in beast's case, which will hurt another attendee, or attendees but also bring negative, unwanted attention.
Hey ya'll I'll be starting school so time on these forums will me limited.  I will still respond to PM's so if you need to get a hold of me, PM me or send me a message on MySpace.

Thank you we told them so kindly not to hug us and they did not maybe they need to put a more strict rule on glomping in the rule book that would help so very much for us cosplayers that have breakable items

Hearing about a Glomp Circle like that just kinda annoys me. I'm not a touchy-feely person, you can ask any number of my friends how long it takes me to warm up to physically touching someone beyond a handshake or high-5, I'm just uncomfortable with physical contact most of the time. I've never had an issue with people trying to Glomp me...more with casual hugs where I tense up and its extremely awkward.

The one similar instance I experienced was during the Q&A after the Hetalia screening. Someone asked if they could give Todd a (group?) hug...at which point 20-30 people practically ran up to the stage. No one was hurt. This time...but I know I had a mini panic attack standing there, as a guest liaison, 5 feet away, and not be positive that everyone in that circle was okay. Todd is pretty easy going, and thankfully likes hugs. But even guests have their limits. And PLEASE! running and 'glomping' a big group of people is not a good idea. If someone tripped, and fell it would have been very easy for them to get hurt, very quickly.

But there are reasons beyond disliking physical contact to remember.

Allergies - Some people are severely allergic to coloured dyes in makeup or food or drinks, or that peanut butter sandwich you just ate, or purfume...there are lots of things that could cause someone to have a severe reaction, and if they don't get the chance to say 'No', it turns into a very bad situation.

Costumes - A number of people listed delicate costumes, but there is also the potential for pins or other sharp objects to be on people's costumes that you may not be able to see right away.

I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons why people need to be more aware of their fellow con-goer's feelings and boundaries on this subject, but I feel putting something in the Con Book or having more signs wouldn't exactly solve the problem. Things like that, and demos and rules explained at opening ceremonies or in a panel I feel also don't have the same effect as something mandatory...I believe in the 14 or 15 cons I've been to over the years I've been to ONE opening ceremonies, and I've never gone to a 'How to Con' equivalent panel...though I know years ago I tried to go.

To be honest the only way I can think of making sure every attendee realizes some of the problems with glomp circles or other things, is to have the info posted at the reg and pre-reg desks and make them read through the list of 'major concerns from previous years'? This isn't really practical, and it would slow down the lines even more...but its a major safety concern for a lot of people for varying reasons, and it seems a lot of attendees don't realize that.

Now that I've reiterated what's already been talked to death...>_<

My first 'concern' on a con level was lack of other staffers checking for badges. I kept taking my badge off, and holding it, or having it tied to a belt loop so that it was barely visible and while I almost always flash my badge so its visible when I enter rooms and such, there were probably at least a dozen times I could have been stopped and wasn't. I talked to at least one other staffer who noticed this during the con. (I know at least on the first day it wasn't because people knew who I was either...I was in cosplay and people I've staffed with for a few years didn't recognize me till I started talking.) And I am in no way condoning walking around a con without having a badge, or without having a visible badge! (I was very bad about it this year, and will definitely try to be better about having mine on and visible next year!) Besides, taking it on and off gives you more chances to lose your badge!

Its just something that needs to be gone over again and again with new and old staff to make sure they are checking for badges on staff and attendees. I realize it gets tiring having to check badges all day, I work at a movie theatre and I've been yelled at just for asking for a ticket stub at the door, or for ID for a rated R movie. It sucks if you end up with the grumpy person who bites your head off, but its part of a staffer's job to check, not just at doorways but in panel rooms, hallways within con space, etc.

Another bit of etiquette to remember with guests - they are very busy at conventions, after all, some people come to cons just for the guests. Our guests also run a decent amount of panels, which gets tiring after talking and being the center of attention for so long. Tiffany, Todd, and Sonny all flew in from Houston, which isn't a horrible flight all on its own, but its still exhausting when you add in travel to the airport, waiting at the airport, flying, getting off the plane, getting luggage, getting picked up by someone you don't know (we need more colourful signs for next year with bigger print letters btw), going to the con hotel, checking in, getting dinner, etc...its a lot to do before the con even starts.

So when the liaisons (the staff in charge of helping the guests while they are at the con) or the guests say they need to go - eat, to another panel, to bed, anything - that is not the time to be asking for autographs or hugs or pictures. The guests want the attendees to be happy, the staff want the attendees to be happy, but sometimes time just runs out. Our guests this year were really great about trying to do as many autographs as they could during the weekend. But there is a time and place for them, and in the hall, when they are trying to go somewhere else is not that time or place. And to be honest, this is the point when the staff tend to get snippy with attendees...which sucks on all ends cause we don't wanna ruin someone's day. But like with the glomping, no means no.

Also no one should take this personally or the wrong way! It happens at other cons (seen it at Comic Con and at Sak), it happens to movie stars, I'm guilty of being an overzealous fangirl over a guest or two at past cons. So if you're guilty of this, and feel bad about it, don't feel too bad, it happens, just try to be understanding of what the guests and staff request of you so that everyone can have a good time!

Other than those few concerns, I had a very good con - minus a few personal mishaps. All the guests were great, and fun to talk to! And the attendees seemed to really enjoy them! Which was a good thing too! I really hope to see them back again! I'm also super excited for cosplay for next year, I've got a lot of sewing to do! And yeah, don't Glomp without asking, make sure your badge is visible, and don't pester the guests for autographs and pictures!

This post made me the happiest I've been in a a day and a half (not counting the pictures of Sam Winchester you sent me Dawn). The Level of detail is gorgeous and amazing... Kate, you make me

Our guests also run a decent amount of panels, which gets tiring after talking and being the center of attention for so long. I think everything was delightful..

EXCEPT...

There was this older man with a beard, in a blue shirt with a camera around his neck, across the street and pointing and shooting pictures of everybody, and it seemed all creepy-like, he paced and tried to be discreet.

It could be just he wanted a Candid shot. You can look at LovelyAngel's shoot in the photo thread. I think the guy was a difrent person. I took a lot a stage shot with my Cococat but I not happy with frozen sameness.

This is more so something that was in the control of the attendees more than the con itself.

My room neighbors were visited quite frequently during the hours of the night. I wouldn't mind this if all of their guests didn't bang on the door as loud as they could.
If you visit someone's room, no matter what time of day, please knock quietly. Just because you are awake doesn't mean someone isn't sleeping in one of the rooms nearby. And trust me, we can hear you banging...and I'm sure a quieter knock is just as efficient. Or hey, most of us have cell phones. You can text the person inside if it's late enough and you don't want to wake people up.

Another issue I came across was the distribution of alcohol to minors.
Con staff took care of this for me and my roommates when we reported it but it still agitated me.
One of my friends who was attending con with me is a minor (green badge and all!!) and she was offered a sip of something while waiting for the elevators. I come up and she tells me to take a sip. Gullible me who trusts my friends took a sip and I was met with quite a shocking taste. Turns out it was Vodka mixed with whipped cream and some other stuff that sounded like it should never have been mixed. She had her badge on and these people just gave it to her without a second thought. And yes, they were con goers as well.
The next day I saw one of the people in the elevator and he offered my friend a drink, telling her it was a Bloody Mary. I told him no and he offered me a sip as well. This was the last straw and I reported what was going on to con staff because it is not okay with me.

If you want to drink, then fine. I don't care what you do with yourself and drinking, but don't offer it to other people who aren't of age. Especially in con space! I don't know if alcohol is or isn't against con rules because I don't drink so I never paid attention to anything about it. But you still should never offer it to someone underage. I would understand if you saw a blue badge because we are at least in the age range. But a Green/Yellow badge? The oldest they are is 17 and that is not okay.
I'm fine with drinking if you are of age so don't take me as anti-alcohol. I'm just anti-MIP.
So please, PLEASE don't do this. It really irked me.

And another thing...no matter your age, don't accept drinks from random people. Just because we are all con-goers and we have a common bond, doesn't mean we all have the best interests in mind. Making friends is fine but don't accept drinks from people you don't know extremely well and know you can trust. It's dangerous and could get you really hurt.
And sometimes even your friends make bad choices and you end up taking a swig of Vodka on accident when you expected something like a Coke (It was in plastic cup like from McDonald's...). So if your friend magically has a drink, ask what's in it. That was my bad because I didn't really think it through. So, please think before you do stupid stuff like I did.

I hate being a nightime worker. I'm used to being up from two in the afternoon until six in the morning so of course when I go to con I'm awake when nothing is going on  and sleeping during hte good stuff. i just sat on a couch almost all of day three because I was too tried to move.
When I am chasing my tail and catch my back leg instead, I will not bite down on my foot. This hurts, and my scream scares my human.

Out of curiousity...would this have been the neighbors right across the hall from my room(directly next to yours)? My roommates & myself heard & saw quite a bit of comotion with con staff, hotel staff & security over there for a while. Looked like the room was being searched & people were packing bags to leave. We were wondering what in the heck was going on over there lol...

Ya, I think it was going on for like 1-2hrs lol. We were all just chillin' & wondering what in the world was going on. They were pretty loud neighbors but luckily we were across the hall so it didn't keep me up. Sucks you had to suffer though. Not sure if that room was responsible for the "wake-up call" of screaming people running through the halls the first couple mornings at 5am...but it didn't happen the last day so maybe.

At least things got dealt with though and I'm really appreciative for that. So Props to staff and security for helping out and all that.
That is one good thing about con. Two out of my three years, we've had issues with people and it has always been dealt with right away. Staff has always been helpful in making me and my friends feel safe whether it's con people or normal people causing the trouble.

We tried to deal with that particular situation as quickly and quietly as possible. I am very sorry for all the commotion outside your rooms. As was already said, Alcohol is not allowed at this convention and IF your going to drink it, it had better be in your room and not with minors. And dont accept mystery drinks from other attendees's. It just isnt safe and could honestly get you hurt.

@Gryffinclaw Princess: Maybe next con now that I know more of you guys better, we will come over & suffer with you lol.

@Kylite: We weren't bothered by it in our room...more confused/curious than anything. It's amazing that people (especially minors) think it's a good idea to publicly offer alcohol to minors or other con attendees. That is a surefire way to get into a hell of a lot of trouble. I personally enjoy drinks here & there but do not walk around in public pushing drinks at random people. Anyway, thanks for dealing with that issue...I have many friends that attend the conventions who are minors & I would be very upset if someone had approached them with such an offer.

Actually, we did.  We had the 'How To Con' panel on convention etiquette from someone who goes to many cons a year due to her job.
Which, ironically, a lot of us missed because we were waiting in the pre-registration line.  Really more than ANYTHING else the registration lines are intolerable.

Ooh! This seems like a point that could potentially be taken into consideration when scheduling that panel for next year?

Actually, Czarcasm has a good way of quickly dealing with people at con who are doing really stupid stuff like offering drinks.  He calls it 'evil monkey'.   Just point at them dramatically, and that usually embarrasses them into stopping.

Like so:

Personally, I would like to take anyone who would offer alcohol to minors at our convention and do terrible, torturous things to them that I could not even begin to describe on a PG-13 message board.  However, since getting staff there to handle it each time is not always possible, if people react with "WHAT ARE YOU THINKING???" enough times, they will stop.  You can't offer sips 'on the downlow' if people go "OMG?  SERIOUSLY?  WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!" in response.  It draws attention they don't want and should keep them from trying again.

I actually saw this approach work effectively at Gamestorm.  Different situation, but it can be a quick and effective way to stop people from doing things they should not do.

Evil Monkey works!  I got a group of drunk non-congoers who were wandering through conspace at Gamestorm mocking the gamers to go elsewhere when I "Evil Monkey"ed them.

This was an old issue that I didn't finish reading, but isn't blocking off the only bathroom on that floor some sort of health/disabilities code violation?

Oh and for the gaming entrance/exit, half the time there was no one counting us leaving (by ramp or the first door).  Making the counting system broken.  Gaming was also not high traffic enough to need more then one in/out and one person with a clicker.  I don't know if you are required people leave a different way then they came in (probably not) but if you NEED a second exit for emergencies you can close it off so that it isn't the most noticeable exit if you are not looking and add a sign saying exit the other way on the door.  Pretty sure no one wanted to exit the way it was set up.

The system that was in place for gaming was per the hotel, for the specific requirements of the space.  That system will change each year, dependent on the venue.

LOL'g on the Evil Monkey idea. Without knowing there was a meme & title for it I did something similiar the one time a couple years ago I saw someone slip loaner Copics into her bag. Got 'em back.

Curious whether there's any connection with how ex-exec Sean's nickname used to be Evil Monkey? (If I am remembering that correctly.)

Overall, I felt this con went much better than last year's. It did get a bit cold waiting outside in the pre-reg line, it would be nice if lines could be kept indoors (if possible). But it was much more organized than other cons I've seen.

Although I personally didn't have any problems, I felt that staff could have been better informed of pertinent information. For instance, several cosplayers in the contest had trouble getting to the green room, because staff was blocking people from going down the escalators. The Cosplay Contest staff had told us just to inform them that we were in the contest, but some staff members wouldn't listen when other contestants told them this. Fortunately they were able to get downstairs in time to check in.

And the glomping, yes. I can't believe I got to my third con before a pre-teen hurtled herself through the air at me. Really, when you see someone cringing away and protecting fragile parts of their costume as you make your running start, that's a good sign to back off. Another panel on Con Ettiquette would be great, especially if attendance was mandatory...

Some reminders for photography etiquette would be nice, too. There was a very rude photographer at one of the photoshoots, who not only delayed us setting off from the hotel, but also kept walking into shots once the shoot had started. Sometimes your favorite character is in a hurry, or has places to be, please be understanding.

mandatory attendance to a panel is not going to happen.
the best thing the con can do, is mention it in the catalog, schedule, at opening ceremonies, and then start taking action if people do not listen.

I'll start:
On Day 2 the Staff member who had to keep the head count for the gaming area, didn't and then this lead to the fire marshall kicking everyone out, in order for the head count to start over. This irked me a lot.

I've been waiting to share this and it branches from his complaint. While I agree with the need to restore headcount what I did not agree with was the manner we were told to leave the area. My group of friends and I were yelled at aggressively by two gaming staff which was absolutely not necessary. I understand they were most likely stressed from the set back however I like to think that staffing an event is akin to any customer service position and this was a very, very poor representation of the convention.

Being verbally whipped at like cattle was something I never expected from the Kumoricon staff. I was truley appauled and hurt and sincerely hope that respect and self-control will be stressed more for our next convention.

Thank you. =)

To clarify, it was not the fire marshal that kicked everyone out, it was a a yoji that did it, instead of shutting down the line to the game room, taking a head count and re-opening it, that person decided to kick everyone out to re-establish the count. We discussed this incident in detail after it happened, in the future nobody should be kicking anyone out of a room except for Managers and Directors and only for emergencies.

Due to fire regulations the line can not be inside unless the building is zoned for having lines inside (i.e. Convention center), If you look at the rose garden and coliseum, their lines are outside too. I tried my best to keep the line "under cover" as much as possible while following fire code.

i wish i had seen this thread earlier! something that really bothered me was in the pre-reg line on friday.. i had been in line for over an hour and just got to the end of the section in the parking garage before you go up the stairs into the building, and the staffer there started talking to the girl behind me, saying "are you the place holder?" or something like that.. and then she called up her friend and told him to "get here right away" or he would lose his place holder and have to wait in the whole line. i really dont like confrontation so i didnt say anything, but it really made me mad. a few minutes later this guy showed up in line behind me who definitely hadnt been there.. i know who was behind me, i had been with them a long time! so just because this guy had a staff friend he got to skip ahead of everyone who had been waiting over an hour. i dont think that is fair, and maybe con staff should get a talking to about not prioritizing their friends..

I have been to many, many hotel meetings and I have never heard of a hotel needing to be 'zoned for lines'.  We have space issues with having the lines inside.  As far as needing special zoning for the presence of lines in a space ... I have never heard of such a thing.

I was wrong, after reviewing Oregon fire code, The section on operational permits that covers event lines, was not adopted by the State of Oregon. However, it is part of the International Fire Code. (O.F.C. Chapter 1 Administration & Chapter 10 Means of Egress)

Alrighty, here's my semi-rant....and I only say this for the sanity of future staff and volunteers:

I know lines to get into kcon sucked, but it was not the fault of me nor any of the other people checking you in! I was a volunteer to help coordinate lines, and no offense, but could parents standing in line be any grouchier??? Seriously, I know you hate wasting your  time in line when you could be worshipping one of the guests or something, but it is not fair to us nor anyone else if you spend five or ten minutes ranting at me because you and your kid had to wait in line a couple hours, which makes us grumpy and makes the other 800+ people waiting behind you have to wait even longer. Kumoricon is still kind of young, you need to realise there are bound to be things like this happening! We were doing the best we could with what we had. We were severely understaffed, with not nearly enough volunteers. I had to wait in line too, you know. Twice! (partly because of my own foolishness though....i accidentaly left my ID at my house the first time ^^')

Basically, my message is this:

Don't vent your frustrations on the staff/volunteers. If you want things to go better in the future, you can help tremendously by being courteous and helping us out by volunteering when you get a chance. We'll be in two hotels this coming year, so you would have the eternal graditude of both congoers and staff if you helped during your down time or when you get a free moment; we'll be needing people more then ever!

(I don't mean to offend anyone with this post, I just hope people can get a better idea of what it's like for the people operating and running kumoricon)

THAT. IS. NOT. OK.

Basically this "Sh**" happened to me when I was with a couple friends as Sebastian Michealis there. I decided to sit down and chill for a bit till this random fangirl screamed my character's name, and literally the whole group chased me..I ran of course and my friend yelled and told them to stop and managed to make a diversion and yes that day my feet were sore due to my dress shoes and I don't appreciate these people going on ahead and doing such stupid acts that would get them selves arrested.

There were couple con-goers who did piss me off quite a bit due to this outcome.
Plans for 2015

So, I've just found out from my brother (two months after the fact, you are brilliant little bro) was given alcohol down in Gaming on Saturday night. This has probably been addressed before (in fact, I'm fairly sure it has), but he is like thirteen or something and has all the mental faculties of a particularly dim brick. He doesn't understand the concept of not accepting drinks from strangers. Someone down there was apparently passing around a bottle of Strawberry Vodka, and my brother came back to the room drunk at somewhere around 1AM. This was after he managed to somehow get lost between Gaming and our room on the 5th floor. Might I add, in the staircase up to the 5th floor. He was drunk enough to get lost in a staircase. He is 13.

That's not cool, guys. I mean, seriously? Alcohol in Gaming? Alcohol in Gaming? Alcohol in Gaming? I know it wasn't sanctioned by anyone because drinking isn't allowed at con, but shouldn't you guys enforce a rule of no food or drink around what must be quite a lot of very expensive equipment? Even if someone managed to sneak something in, there should be someone looking for that kind of stuff. A bunch of slightly buzzed nerds is one thing, but then a drink might spill and then you have a bunch of buzzed nerds and a broken console. Neither of those options really sound appealing to me.

Also, sticky controllers from people handling drinks/food and then equipment. Grossness.

Someone offered me a drink when I was downstairs.  I don't recall if I knew them or not.  But I immediately became suspicious.  I mean, who just offers their drink to someone randomly?

Come to think of it, I think I was approached a couple of times by random people like this. :S

Seriously, how could they think it was acceptable to do that?

THAT. IS. NOT.

I'm so sorry that happened to you too. It just baffles me. I was just lucky that my costume aided me in protecting my group the second time. The first time there was really no time to think or act. :/ But I think you'd have to be an idiot to try that crap again when I've got my straight razor pulled and am glaring at you for all I'm worth in one 5'2'' ball of in-character terror.

Sweeney Todd fending off the glomp circle. Best in-character moment I've ever had. Looking back on it that was pretty epic. But still, no bueno on their part.

No bueno.

you can add in as many reminders/ rules as you want. but there will always be some fangirl who will forget and glomp the cosplayer. its just one of the dangers of being a cosplayer. im not saying we shouldnt remind people, but just be aware that people will forget.

This is true, but at the same instance, it also needs to be added in that IF you do have unwanted physical interaction with someone and its reported, with witnesses, your con-going privileges will be revoked and you will be sent home and removed/banned from that years con, or, if it needs to be done as well, banned from the next years con as well.

that seems a little extreme. but i guess it just depends on the situation. people should respect other peoples space. but being banned from the con seems a little extreme.

The way I see it, If someone knows there is a risk of being banned from something they love, it's good to put that rule in.  Especially when there is a risk of someone invading someones personal space, and that person has very good reflexes thus resulting in a con-goer being hurt.

In all essence, I personally believe that the act of "glomping" needs to be looked at as assault because that is what it is.

i guess... maybe they should have at least one warning and then they can be removed from con. your point makes sense but people should at least be forewarned that they are invading personal space.

Problem is though is that yeah, they might get one warning, but the person being attacked won't know that.  So it's almost like its a freebie since its a warning.

You know what? That's a good idea. Had I gotten names or badge numbers I would have reported the incident in a heartbeat. A glomp circle shouldn't be a safety hazard, and unfortunately that's what its turned into. Unwanted contact like that IS assault, and IS a crime. I think this needs to be stressed more in the con handbook or posted somewhere in the actual con space.

Just because you're a cosplayer doesn't mean you have to be subjected to unwanted and unconsented physical contact. People should be able to contain themselves, and if they can't respect common boundaries and be considerate, then they need to get kicked out of the con space. Plain and simple.

Also, just another note, that if its also a photoshoot and someone decides to interfere in something you are doing, well, some photographers won't put up with that, and it could wind up with you getting chewed out.

Just sayin.

Same here, so you'd get what I'm saying when you're getting shots composed then half your group runs away when some idiot decides that unwanted physical attention is A-okay because its a con

One problem with this.  Because we disallow glomp circles, they are often outside of con space.  We can't really enforce rules our on people when they are offsite.  We can take certain actions on attendees within con space, but our authority stops at the door.

While I understand this, there needs to be some kind of rule in place, like if you are wearing your convention badge, you are still part of, and representing Kumirocon, even if not in the hotel space. Now if they take it off and then they physically interact with someone and are injured because of it, then it becomes a problem with Portland Police and the individuals, but if they are wearing a con badge, they are still representing Kumoricon.

That's far too much of an intrusion on people's private lives. When they leave site, the badge is owned by the attendee, as a souvenir. Attendees don't represent the convention (though staff do, within the limits of their staff positions--regardless of whether they are actually wearing the physical badge at that time).

Just my two cents, but I'm starting to think talking to people about it (like this) and making them aware of how others could be hurt by their actions is the best defense of all. Banning behaviors has its place, but it should be a last resort even when it is possible. (It's not possible in this case, as JeffT said.)

People hate being told what to do without a reason.

But people also hate the thought of hurting others, if they're aware of it.*

* - Unless they're damaged in the head, that is. But that's only a tiny fraction of any group, and those people tend to make themselves obvious in a way that others would know not to follow their example.
This is my serious voice. Otherwise, I'm just another anime fan, not a moderator.

I now understand that Kumoricon's authority stops at the door, thanks for clearing that up. ;) It's just unfortunate that because they still have the badge on them, they're giving the con bad publicity with their actions. Sad indeed.

I still think that perhaps making it a point to address this issue in the con handbook or posted clearly in the con space could really help. Making people aware is the best thing we can all do. I'd hate to see this happen again next year.

yeah. maybe make it a point to train the yoji and info booth staff to politely remind people to respect people's space.

All staff get some degree of training, though whether it's enough is always open to debate. There are a lot of things to cover, everything from how to deal with serious troublemakers of the kind kylite was just talking about (or worse), to how to explain to a Sexy no Jutsu cosplayer that three strategically-placed cotton balls don't meet dress code.

But at some point, there really isn't much more we can do - and unfortunately, there's almost nothing we can do about things outside conspace. We can remind people until we're blue in the face in the con handbook, con policies, forum postings, bag stuffers... but people don't always get how this applies to them, not just "those other people." Ultimately, the decision to be considerate or to be inconsiderate lies with the individual.

This is where the "Evil Monkey" principle becomes important. People may or may not care about what's printed in a con book, but they do care if they see other people looking at them reproachfully when they try to jump on someone. Or if they see their actions (not them, their actions) described in a forum posting as being the reason someone almost got hurt. Or if they hear one of the people beside them yell "Wait, STOP! No chasing people!" People are a whole lot less likely to do something wrong if even one person questions it than if they think "everyone" is doing it too.

There's only so much we can do to change people's perceptions. We're the cranky, mean old staff who want to keep you guys from having fun, after all. ;)  But there's a lot that you guys can do just by talking about it, and by saying something when you see things like this happen.

Sometimes you have to be the change you want to see.

1 thing that bugged me.... A staff yelled at me for not having a parent when im 13... I'm just SHORT! ans then she was all your short. i felt so mad
I am sorry that a staff member yelled at you, however it can be loud. I am curious though, what color was your badge? If it was red and not yellow, that would be why.

*fyi*
If your 13th birthday falls on any day of con after con Saturday (day 1), then you would be issued a child badge and therefore would be required to have an adult present. Upon your 13th birthday on Sunday (day2) or Monday (day3) you can have your badge changed to a youth. The same would go for a youth turning 18, and it would be a day earlier as we have 18 and over rated content on Friday (day 0). Due to state law we can not have anyone under 18 attending regardless if they turn 18 a few hrs later.

I'm sorry sum1 yelled as well! I'm super short (or fun-sized depending on how u look at it) and 22, and a staff person started to ask me something about it, until i turned my badge around (dunno how it had gotten turned over). It helped tho that I was dressed as Soi Fon; no one questions Soi Fon. ;) us short people just gotta fight for our rights to walk alone!
2013 (in the works): Soi Fong (Bleach), Faith (Mirrors Edge), Agito/Akito (Air Gear)

Yep. Means you're a Minor. Can't do any of the fun after-hours stuff and other such interesting things.

You'll have that color badge until you're 18, and then you get the mighty Blue Badge Of Righteousness And Adultness. Captialized.

^ I'm pretty sure that pre-reg is open.  There were people who said that they registered for '11 during the last day of KCon '10, and I'm pretty sure I saw pre-reg forms at the mini-con.

Until the site rolls over, we can not have Online registration or Mail-in (apparently). But we have had registration at mini-events.

I would love to say when it will be available, but the website needs to roll over to 2011 before anything can happen.

Pyro is correct on this. Until I have everything greenlighted for the website and prepared for the simultaneous roll over (It's more than just pretty pretty pictures yo! This takes some work! and I'm still learning Publicity!) I wont be letting reg open there stuff.

A clean opening of the new website IS coming, which will include the awesome sauce of pre-reg! I really like whats coming for the website, and the potential for even more awesome things!

Don't worry folks, we wont let you go without registering for much longer, we just want to make sure the website and the programs are the BEST they can BE before you see'em, nothing half baked is coming out of my Publicity Kitchen!

SO I'm not like a hard core otaku so I'm not always up to date on the latest things in the manga world, but something that really bugged me was there were people in a circle doing a weird movement with their hands like they were talking... I would call it a dance but their not actually dancing, and if someone would explain that to me it would be nice cuz I mean, if you're going to dance, MOVE

Thank you.

Well, since this is the "It just bugs me" thread, I'd like to say that I think it'd be nice if the Dealer's Hall was open later.  From what I understand, this is something negotiated with the vendors, hence why it usually ends when it does (at most cons).  I'd like to see it open until 8pm.

Also, I really need some new shoes.  Mine are falling apart, and I hate washing my socks so often.  (Sometimes I go through 2 or 3 pairs a day, hence why I've been washing them more).
