A request for gaming in 2011
« on: September 10, 2010, 03:19:51 pm »
I went down to the video game area twice this year, about 5 times last year, 3 times in '08, and I have no idea how many in '07.  Never once did I see a sports game, like Madden, or anything.  Could it be possible to have something like that available?  Early September sort of clicks "FOOTBALL BEGINS!  BASEBALL ENDS!", so I'd like to dabble with sporty games.  Even a wrestling game would work (to an extent).

We had Madden '07, '09, and '10. All you had to do was ask the gaming staff to swap one of them out.

They aren't too terribly popular otherwise we would have left them in the systems.

What systems? I didn't see them.  (Of course, I just kinda cruised through the area).

The systems that were being played on nearly every T.V. in the room. Most of them were located directly to the left or right (within one foot) of the T.V. they were connected to.

So, you're saying that you had about 20 copies of all of these Maddens laying around...?

No, I'm saying we had a console (mostly Wiis and xbox360s) connected to nearly every T.V. in the room.

Washougal-

We had the games in the center of the staff area. They were not as well displayed as they should have been but next year assuming the amazing bressler brings his games again, we will have sporty games. sorry for the poor awareness...

Thanks for the help.  Another thing that might be a good idea to consider is having a list of what you have so that people can see them and go over what they'd like to play, like how karaoke does it.

The majority of the games played at con are loaners... and as such, are not available to us until con itself.  We would love to be able to provide of list of what we have to offer, but without getting the games earlier, it can be hard to have an accurate list (you know how crazy things get at con.)

Your best bet is to talk to gaming staff.. that is what they are there for  ;)

This is true about the craziness.  When I went down there, I only saw one staffer, the guy working at the door.  Then again, I was just kinda passing through, looking for games; I probably passed by a help table or something & didn't realize it.

Wait, we can loan games for the con?

Our Desk was in the middle of the room this year and I can honestly say that we had at least 3 staff working at any given time the entire weekend.

Also, our con-owned game library is less that 10 games. Every year we call upon staff and attendees to bolster our numbers so that we can offer a wide selection of titles.

So, it was one of the tables that made up the inner circle?  If so, that'd probably explain why I didn't see it (along with just kinda game-gazing while there).

Now that I think about it, I think I remember hearing people asking for games to donate to the con.  I didn't realize that our selection was so small.  I'll have to try to remember this conversation so that I can donate some of my games.

I could've brought my SNES for it.  I won't be able to in '11 because I donated it to the Charity Auction.  (It was so fun watching the winner react to the final blowing bid, even though he beat out a good friend of mine...).

Yeah, I agree with that.  I'm not even sure if there's any Pokemon games that are multi-player or would make a good contribution to something like this game room.  This is one of the main reasons why (at least I think) I've never seen a Tomb Raider game at any convention's video gaming rooms.

Pokemon may not have been in the gaming room but all weekend long I saw people playing whatever version has the portable pokeball that allows you to uh I guess trade or get pokemon from other people. It's the newest one, at least at the time. It seems most pokemon games are on handhelds, am I wrong about that?

Also, about the sports games, it's an anime convention. When I go to cons I never think that I'll see sports games, I think I'll see FPS's, Rock Band, Fighting Games and Smash Bros. It'd be alright to see people playing some sports games but I feel that if a person wants to play one they would just stay at home and play it. Maybe next year you can take a copy of a game you want to play and pop it in and see if anyone wants to join in?

^ With all due respect, I see no connection to Rock Band & anime conventions, and since there are some animes that have a strong sports theme, it'd make sense.  Also, there's a lot of things at cons that I don't think are fitting for anime cons, such as Harry Potter or Magic.  Either way, the subject ought to be over now.  As the one who started it, I feel that there is a sufficient ending to it, and should no longer be discussed.

Regardless of who starts a thread, anyone is welcome to contribute their ideas. We as a group may not agree (personally, I don't think Rock Band or sports games are topical to an anime convention), but we need to respect the fact that others' ideas are just as valid as our own.

Exclusivity has its place - we don't want to become some undefinable blob of nerdosity, we do want to have our own distinct feel. But one person's "this is kinda related" may be another's "that's a stretch", and vice versa.

The gaming guys will be the ones who have the final say; let's trust them to make those calls on the balance between "what people want" and "what's topical". The best way we can help is by providing a minimally-judgmental atmosphere for making suggestions.

No I didn't.  I just think this is a closed discussion, since nothing new has been said.  This thread just has people repeating the same idea over and over again, and it's time to end it.  Please.  (If I could, I would've locked it back in October when it was clear that nobody was answering my question about the Tomb Raider game).

Honestly, Rock Band is just an extremely great party game. Which is why I feel there's always a lot of FPS games, they allow at least 4 people to play them. If you think that anime cons should only have anime things then anime cons won't grow so big. Some people go to cons just to play Video games or card games or even board games. I myself, do not participate in any anime related situation besides the exhibitors hall. If there was no video games, board games or card games I wouldn't go to anime conventions and I'm sure a lot more people wouldn't either.

As I said in my previous post, if you really want to play a sports game and it's not there just bring your own copy and get whatever you need to play it on a system with someone.

Also, if sports themes are so relevant to anime then tell me an anime that is based around american football. I know there's some based on baseball and tennis, but I've never heard of one about american football. Seriously, I want to know if there's an american football based anime.

Eyeshield 21 is about a football team, and there's a few that I've seen that have made references to it, such as Ranma 1/2.  There's also the King of Fighters video game series; the original game, and I think the second one, have a character who's an American football player by the name of Battler.  They make some references to him and his friends a few times later in the gaming series, but mainly as an ongoing joke that they keep getting invites to the tournament, but get them taken away by other fighters.

I will say my piece here: Down in the gaming room, they have games. If we wanted to be dumb and limit ourselves to things that are directly related to anime, we would have a total of 10 or so anime-themed games that only a niche audience wants to play. That doesn't make for a high-interest attraction, and thus defeats the entire purpose of gaming: giving people something to enjoy. Can you imagine how badly our game room would suck if all we played was the various Shonen Jump (Bleach, Naruto) fighting games? Not to mention the price and relatively low interest in Japanese-market-only niche games.

Thankfully, the programming department agrees with me and for years has done its absolute best to provide a large selection of interesting and fun to play games, from obscure NES titles to big names like HALO and RockBand.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Point taken.

If people want to suggest games that we should have, that's quite welcome. (Suggestions coupled with an offer to donate a used copy from GameStop would be even more welcome, as we can't afford to buy everything that's suggested.)

But the opposite, suggesting games that we shouldn't have, doesn't really help. Participation in gaming is voluntary - so the inherent harm in having games present that someone doesn't like is negligible.

Agreed.  For that, I plan on bringing some of my own games, including a fighting game for the PS1 that's fun and funny called "Evil Zone."  I'd love to play against someone else who's actually heard of it.  I'd like to hope, though, that if I do donate some games, that this time they'll be out so people can see them rather than tucked away underneath some coats and backpacks (like at the GameStop Halloween party thing).
