Offical Rock Band Tournament Rules and Info
« on: August 21, 2010, 10:33:14 pm »
With K-con fast approaching, and the programming schedule finally out, you might have noticed the "Rock Band Finals" event at 1:30Pm on Sunday in Live 2. Again, this year's prize is a free ticket to next year's convention for each member of your band. With only a an hour and a half for the finals, we have just enough time for three bands to go head to head. To choose those bands, we are having open auditions all day Saturday during open play. We've written up the complete competition rules. Do the MC's a favor and read them since we're probably going to have to explain it a million times at the event already.

If you want to know what songs we have available to play, check out the song list here: http://www.kumoricon.org/forums/index.php?topic=12917.

We are still looking for song suggestions so we have what you want to play. We only have $100 left to buy songs. If you want to pitch in a few dollars, we'll match the amount to get the songs you want. The PayPal donation link is on the suggestion page mentioned above. As it stands, we'll be running rock band for the next few years of conventions so if you help us purchase a song now, it'll still be there for years to come.

Now that we got that out of the way, here are the rules:

Scoring Guide
When a band chooses a song, the individual part rating and the difficulty attempted are also recorded. When the band finishes their song performance, the percentages of notes hit per member are recorded. The part rating, the difficulty attempted, and the percentage of notes hit are calculated for each band member and then added together to get the band score. The following calculation is used.

Where:
P = Percentage of notes hit
D = Difficulty Attempted
R = Part Rating

P x ( (D / 4 ) + .5 ) x R = Score

Example:
A band decides to play Dead on Arrival by Fall out Boy. Each member decided to play the song on normal and each got a 95%. Using the calculations above, each member gets the following score.

Guitar:         95 x ( ( 2 /4 ) + .5 ) x 4 = 380
Drums:    95 x ( ( 2 /4 ) + .5 ) x 5 = 475
Vocals:    95 x ( ( 2 /4 ) + .5 ) x 2 = 190
Bass :        95 x ( ( 2 /4 ) + .5 ) x 4 = 380

The final band score would be: 1425

Preliminaries (Auditions)
Starting at noon on Saturday, bands can sign up to audition for the Rock Band Finals. To audition, attendees form a four (4) person band and choose a band name. Attendees can only be a part of a single band. Once the band is formed, the band chooses a song and fills out the auditions sign up slip. When it is their turn to go up, they hand their audition slip to the MC and their score will be recorded by the MC.
Throughout the preliminaries, the top five bands are shown on a “leader board” and their scores are not posted. Bands can audition multiple times, but they must wait in line like normal attendees. The “leader board” will be taken down at 11PM on Saturday and prelims will continue until midnight. The top bands will be posted when gaming opens on Sunday morning.

Finals
When one of the top five bands checks in on Sunday with the MC, they will be given the final song selection sheet. Bands choose their top ten (10) songs that they want to perform in order of preference. Once all of the top five bands have submitted their song selections, the rock band moderators will build the band’s final set list. Starting with the top band, their number one (1) song is put on their final set list. The moderators then move to the next band and give them their number one (1) song. If a song has already been picked, the next song on their list is selected. The cycle continues until each band has a 15 minute set list.
If one of the final five bands does not show up to select their final song list by noon on Sunday they will not perform.

At 1:00PM, the final five bands must report to the competition room. Only the top three bands will perform. If a band does not arrive, or are missing members at 1:20PM, they are disqualified and the fourth place band will take their place. If two bands do not arrive on time, then the fifth place band will play.

Scoring during finals
When the finals start, a band will be picked randomly to start. They will play each song on their set list in order and the MC’s will score each song individually. The scores of all the songs are then averaged and bonus points awarded. Bonus points are given to bands that have good stage presence, rock band related costumes, and positive audience reception. Bonus points will only make up a small part of the score, but can make the difference when scores are close.

So now that I've sufficiently bored you with the rules, I need to mention some additional information. Even though we will be having Green Day and Beatles going during the day, the competition will be run on Rock Band 2 for PS3. We have plenty of hardware and will not connect your "personal instrument", so leave it at home. Since K-con is a PG-13 event, you will need to follow the con rules on cursing. If it's bleeped out, don't fill in the words that you know are there.

So if you want a shot at the grand prize, or you just want to come down and have some fun, drop by and play a round or two.

See you all there!

Here's a great list of things to do to increase your stage presence.  If you impress us enough in semifinals, I will consider making this a larger part of the overall score!

Vocals:
•   Rock Star Look – Hair, clothes, makeup, etc… The look doesn’t necessarily have to be crazy, but a theme amongst the band members is what we are looking for.
•   Stage Movement – The singer can move around the most so do it! Look away from the screen (know the song by heart), and move around the stage.
•   Crowd Interaction – Work the crowd. You are the front man/woman so act like it. Give shout outs during “over drive” moments.
•   Band Unison – Interact with the other band members. Do stage moves together, sing into the same mic, etc…

Guitar / Bass:
•   Rock Star Look – Hair, clothes, makeup, etc… The look doesn’t necessarily have to be crazy, but a theme amongst the band members is what we are looking for.
•   Stage Movement – Movement on stage (power slides, scissor kicks, behind the head…etc…). Occasional “no looks” from the screen. Interact with the other band members and move around the stage. Up strums only (bass), use of solo fret buttons (guitar).
•   Crowd Interaction – Work the crowd. Play to them, not the TV screen!
•   Band Unison – Interact with the other band members. Do stage moves together, back up singing during the chorus.

Drums:
•   Rock Star Look – Hair, clothes, makeup, etc… The look doesn’t necessarily have to be crazy, but a theme amongst the band members is what we are looking for. Props such as special drumsticks, kick drum facades (modded drums are not allowed) are allowed.
•   Stage Movement – This is hardest for the drummer. If you can move or stand up, do it! Cymbal usage (instead of the regular pads) and occasional “no looks” from the screen. Interact with other band members when possible.
•   Crowd Interaction – Work the crowd. Play to them, not the TV screen! Drum fills during “over drive” moments will also factor in.
•   Band Unison – Interact with the other band members. Do stage moves together, back up singing during the chorus.
