"The Legand of Korra" Avatar Spinoff??
« on: July 22, 2010, 04:42:52 am »
http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2010/07/21/legend-of-korra-the-creators-of-avatar-the-last-airbender-on-the-new-spinoff/

What do you guys make of it?
Personally, while very much fond of, "Avatar the Last Airbender" I'm not a huge spin-off fan. I like leaving the magic of what was once the original story alone.

I'm pretty excited to see what they do with it. I like that it seems to have its own story and characters, and isn't really relying on Avatar to set its stage too much. It has its own direction. At least, so it seems as of yet. It has to better than The Last Airbender, so that's a point in its favor.

I love Avatar a lot, but I'm like you when it comes to spin offs.
I'll probably still watch it, just to see if it's any good, but I'm sure it won't replace my love for the original series.

Hmm, I don't know, I think it sounds kind of interesting. This could be a pretty good series.
Hopefully Shyamalan will leave it alone, though. If they decide to make a live-action version of it, I at least hope they get a better director. Steven Spielberg, George Lucas (not that I think Lucas would do it), et cetera... someone who actually knows what they're doing! ><

I'm neutral on this really. It looks really good but at the same time how can they really further the story when all the problems have ended? More benders going power hungry?

Either way Korra seems like she might turn out to be really cute. <3

The interesting thing for me is going to be who crosses over into this series and how many times Aang will make an apperance. In the last series Avatar Roku showed up many times to help the new Avatar. Perhapswe will get to experiance an older more mature aang as a side character. I'm looking forward to the more mature theme as the last series was definatly geard towards younger demographics. It was very lucky to have the older following it did. Since it takes place in the future it might also possibly answer many questions I wanted to kniow. Was Azula Rehabilitated did the Earth King ever return what happened to Toph and for sure what happened to Sokka? Since thease are all going to figure greatly as "Historicle" figures in series lore I'm sure both snippets as well as more impacting things will be brought up.  Oh and speculation, wouldn't Aang and Katara's child be at the LEAST in his mid thirties to forties considering Aang Died at 70 and was younger then Kotara? That means there are going to be a shortage of youthfull characters suggestiong an older Demographic is very likely.   On a side notw  GGGOOO TEAM AVATAR!   and a note to Mr. Failsalot movie tard. If M night EVER makes another airbender movie I will hunt him down and make him pay.
When I am chasing my tail and catch my back leg instead, I will not bite down on my foot. This hurts, and my scream scares my human.

I trust the original creators. I also feel from the synopsis that this will be aimed more towards older viewers and old fans of Avatar rather than a new audience, and I am excited to see what they come up with. And I am a sucker for anything even remotely labelled "steampunk," so there you have it...

That sounds promising. I trust the integrity of the series and narrative to the creators, and if they feel confident and motivated to continue it, then I will trust them to keep it up to snuff with the original. The one screencap (if that's what it is) looks great and seems to be of the same art quality.

Personally, I'm really ticked off that they're doing this.

Mostly because I liked the partial ambiguity and "make your own canon-ness" of the ending of A:TLA. They didn't tie everything up, and a lot of the things they did tie up could easily change, because, come on guys, they're all TEENAGERS.

I would have loved an Avatar spinoff set in the past, maybe a few Avatars back, in the peacefull, pre-Fire Nation invasion world that Aang grew up in, and I love the idea of a female Avatar being the main character, but I'm really just not excited for Legend of Korra. So much of it just sounds like a self-indulgent futurefic. I thought Mike and Bryan were better than this. Though maybe, in retrospect, considering the ridiculous mess that was most of Sozin's Comet and The Last Airbender that they let happen, you really never can know.

I looked it up and it actually sounds really cool. My sister freaked when I told her and I can't wait for more of the avatar world. I like how they are trying to make it all seem different but I am worried about whether or not that will work out.

I'm considerably excited.
As much as I hate sequels, or spin offs, this one sounds pretty good.
I'm just really excited for some more Avatar love... and as long as there is a little bit of Sokka in it, even if it's only every now and again, I will be happy.

I looked it up, and it doesn't seem like it is canceled.
That would be a lame reason to cancel it, considering that most loyal fans didn't enjoy the movie, thus they didn't see it 40 times like they would have if it was (for lack of a better word) better.

My brother seems really excited about the spinoff, but im just unsure.
As long as Mike and Bryan are at the helm of it, it'll be great.

Give me avatar Book of Wind. Have Azula escape, tell me did zuko ever know where his mom was at, did toph go back home and live the life she wanted or got grounded haha, there was too many things untold in the end peace does not last forever and add some more story about Aang older age like mid 20's- 30's and yea then. Legend of korra should be great after that.  But thats my ideas but I think They will do a good job making a spin off

Totally my thoughts.  It could be an interesting and well done show, but what needed to be said was done and this seems like it might just be an extra long fluff series.

Of course Korra will be cute!

Well the one of the plot points they've announced is unrest between the bending and nonbending populations. And with the industrial revolution setting of the story, it should be an interesting tale.

Plus I'm a sucker for expanded universes.

When they first leaked that teaser image of her back I was tempted to try cosplaying her at some point after the series came out officially. Then I saw the trailer and I decided that my friend Sara is the real life version of her. So I decided I'm helping her make the costume because it would be amazing and what not.

I'M SO EXCITED FOR THIS SERIES GUYS.

First episode up, I'm holding out until the official first day anyways.

I'm really psyched for this. No world can stay perfect forever; by thrusting into the future, and seeing a new antagonist, with a new wish for the world, it's really exciting. Besides, this sort of antagonist was bound to happen sooner or later.

While spin-offs are usually a sort of dead zone, I think that the writers might have pulled this off. The style hasn't changed too much, and they allude to the previous series enough so that you don't feel a complete disconnect. The new characters have good personality and spunk too. Although, after the end of episode two I had to say to myself, "Wait. Two down and my shipping instincts are already tingling. Oh dear."

My sister made a crack about how Korra was made purposely for the Zutara fans. xD

I actually really dug that moment with Mako and Korra staring off into the distance, because Mako was definitely thinking about her, but it seemed like Korra was thinking about how awesome pro-bending and how totally sweet the tournament was going to be. After all, why would she be smiling about some jerk who barely managed two civil sentences to her when she could be thinking about HITTING THINGS?

I actually really dug that moment with Mako and Korra staring off into the distance, because Mako was definitely thinking about her, but it seemed like Korra was thinking about how awesome pro-bending and how totally sweet the tournament was going to be. After all, why would she be smiling about some jerk who barely managed two civil sentences to her when she could be thinking about HITTING THINGS?

I don't know.  I think she may like him a little.

I thought the series was surprisingly good. I was skeptical about it for a while-- spinoffs in general, and the whole change to a modern city struck me as a little odd-- but after watching the first two episodes I thought it was turning out quite well. Granted, it felt a little rushed with the sudden obvious romantic interest, and there were a couple other aspects that I thought could have been slowed down and could have come in later, but overall I liked it.

...Am I the only one who now wants a Last Airbender/Legend of Korra MMORPG, or at least a new video game for Legender of Korra?
C'mon, an MMO could be wicked cool...

Also, Meelo creeps me the heck out. >>;;

It would make a nice mmo, there are just so many that I doubt it would be done.

My comments:
I hate the idea of the equalists. The last series was so black and white, fire nation is bad, Avatar is good. But this series... I find myself almost agreeing with the equalists, which is difficult for me.
I must admit, however, that I love the series so far.
Korra is remarkably attractive, and Bolin is the cutest thing in the whole world

Did you forget about all the fire nation people and groups who obviously good guys?  I know the basic idea was the fire nation was doing bad things, but it wasn't all bad.

The last episode really peaked my interest. I'm very interested in how Amon obtained that power, when only Aang has ever possessed it. ;O

And how Aang pretty much had to go through hell and back in order to do it :x

I actually don't remember that being a focal point at all really
Of course the whole Fire Nation wasn't bad, they never are, but they never targeted the whole nation, just Ozai.
With the equalists, it's completely different. Seeing people like Mako's girly-friend's dad just end up being a supporter of them, that was painful. Though you can relate him to Teo's dad, who was building weapons for the Fire Nation in AtLA, I think they were pretty different. Teo's dad didn't support them entirely out of choice, but out of fear, while Mr. Sato did it entirely out of his own free will.
I find myself, through this whole thing, thinking of Sokka, who traveled all the way across the world with Aang, never having the ability to bend. He found his own niche, his own way to help, and I can't see someone like him being such a butt like Amon is doing, and benders killed his mother.

And saying that I hated the idea of the equalists was a lie
I just feel like they're harder to deal with than the Fire Nation was
But, after the last few episodes, I was like "These poops"
Though they kinda have a point
But
Still
Ugh
Stressful for Katie

I ALSO THINK SHE SHOULD JUST LOVE BOLIN RIGHT NOW
IF SHE DOESN'T
I WILL

Legend of Korra, I had such high hopes for you... I thought that the series was rushed, subplots seemed to appear out of no where then disappear again just as quickly. Korra was a great character, but I felt that she never got a moment to really shine in the finale, it seemed like everyone was kicking ass besides her. The love triangle between Korra, Mako and Asami seemed forced and out of place.. I'd almost like it better if she didn't end up with Mako in the end. Also, the villian's back story was just dumped on us at the end with almost no build up. I know they were trying to recreate the feeling of that Ozai / Roku backstory episode from Avatar season 3, but it just fell flat.

I'm hoping that the next season will have it's act together.
