Editing Horror Stories!
« on: July 21, 2010, 06:27:51 pm »
I'm curious of what other's experiences are. Ever made a mistake with an AMV and missed a submission date or something? Like just today I had the wrong time(switched them) in my head for the submission so I missed it. Or maybe you got all the footage and your editor got a mysterious error you had to trudge through the interwebs to figure out how to fix?

Me: My desktop refusing to run any editor properly and/or moving slower then a snail when it does.
Missing the deadline because I was thinking a different time and I ended up being scheduled to work THROUGH the submission time today
^with the above: missing as in SWITCHING the deadline for mailed submissions. *cries*
Ripping footage that for some reason came out like crap
WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER... *shot*

Since the mail in submission is the 23rd I'll try to overnight a hard copy tomorrow. Or something I dunno xD Wish me luck?

But let us here your AMV editing horror stories!

I have two:
The first AMV I made (and the only I used WMM with) I didn't realize I had to keep the source footage on my computer (I thought that WMM actually generated clips rather than just segmenting the files to be more accessible) so I removed the episodes once I was finished editing and then reloaded WMM to find that my whole AMV was gone! But then I put the same videos back on in the same place (they were on my external hd) it all came back like magic xD
And then the second AMV I made (the first with Adobe Premiere) somehow the first or second clip got corrupted during one of the many crashes that occurred and so whenever I tried to play-back the whole video or export it the whole program would crash. I got really worried that I was going to have to do the whole thing over but it turned out deleting the corrupted file and reimporting totally fixed it :D

Adobe Premiere drove me nuts when making my Chobits AMV.  I think I used a different version, and suddenly things were out of sync.  Then I started to notice a lot of motion blur in places (I think it was "filling in" frames to fit the "correct" fps) that it didn't have it before.  Then when I would export it, it would be all messed up.

Probably half the time I spent on that AMV was just fixing weird crap like that.

Last year for the Iorn Chef competition I had the idea to use a clip of some guy getting sniped and I almost forgot that I ripped everything without audio. So when I tried to rip it again I tried to change my settings so I'd still have the original audio track to it but it kept messing up the file so i eventually had to just put the raw into Vegas, find the scene again, and edit down the raw audio to match the soundless clip.

July 3rd, 2010 Friday, ten minutes before 6am...

There is a double bang: a "ba-bang!" in the neighborhood.
I'm thinking THAT's a little early for the 4th, then notice all power GONE and my UPSs squeaking.

Tried to shut down my one AMV-making box, and I can't cuz there's not enough power to run the monitor.
I hit the power switch...

Power comes back on and I am back from work, and the C:\drive is TOAST.
Lost most of the 2010 opener, plus much of two other projects.

Thank you GOD for NAS boxes and BACKUPS. (Including the backups for the 2010 contest & shows...)

Was thinking of getting a new laptop so I finally bit the bullet.
All my cool old, PAID-FOR software doesn't work on Windows 7.
My wife has an old laptop with XP that can still run After Effects 5.0 and Premiere 6.0.
So I spend all the 3-day weekend CONFIGURING COMPUTERS instead of PLAYING on them.....

Still managed to complete the contest OP *before* the judges' panel. A first.
Now I have to learn Premiere Elements 8. Rrrrggh ... more delays....

... And the cause of the outage? TWO CROWS.

They simultaneously landed on the wooden crossbars of a utility pole - one between the 'A' and 'B' phase and the other between the 'B' and 'C' phase. With both of them there, wings outstretched, at the same time, the combined dielectric precipitated an arc.

Two DEAD crows.

And my dead computer, and LOTS of wasted TIME and money spent I had wanted to spend elsewhere ...

Just another reason I think that birds are the most useless creatures on this planet.

I edited until about 2 years ago. I just got fed up with scenarios like:

Me: Oh, yes! Now just the credits!
*WMM crashes*
NOOOOOO!~

And that would happen up to five times per AMV...

Or the clips wouldn't line up correctly, even after I swore they were...

Well just earlier this year, I submitted an amv for Sakura-Con's AMV contest to find out I submitted it into the wrong section. My choices online were General or Exhibition and I selected Exhibition. I should have selected General :P

If it makes you feel any better, i know that you're not the only person to make that mistake this year :P
