News?
« on: November 01, 2009, 02:48:45 pm »
I noticed the "News: Welcome to the Kumoricon Forums! Remember: Have fun!" a while back, and every time i see it i think, how is this news?

So i was wondering if you all ever plan on doing anything with it.

I was thinking maybe you could put a headline, and link to any important threads at the moment.

It would help people become more aware of things like meetings, new rules, site updates, etc.

Finally! A New non-off topic chat that I can get involved in! I was feeling
quite useless recently... My post count was going down to almost less than
4 a day!

Now that my melodrama has been served;

To be honest, it took me a moment to realize what the heck you was talking
about! But when I saw it I find myself agreeing... does that little banner
ever change? would people notice it if it did? Could we simply remove the "News"
part to keep it from seeming current as opposed to just welcoming?

I'm imagining it being overkill if we use it for meetings and such... Although it
is important for people to get the latest news and information, I'm wondering whether
or not people even notice that little thing more often than not and if it would be
a useful tool to projecting something important to the masses.

Though, I must say, having any extra information is never a bad thing... and from
the turn out at the meeting (not that it was bad) we had in october, we could use
more warm bodies knowing about and going to meetings to get the ball rolling. Though
I'm sure that will happen! ^_^

What are we proposing the little news banner say? Would we need a welcome sign somewhere
else? Or is this just a simple question of why is it there and curiosity to that effect?

Well, it is a pretty useful little area, and i would hate to see it go to waste.
If they did start using it, it would be useful to everybody, but the true nature of this thread WAS curiosity.

Basically the Publicity department will be assigning in new admins for the website and the forums in the next couple months (I have a feeling it'll still be JeffT, but he may be stepping back from publicity entirely. I dunno.)

Once we know who is in charge they'll be the person to talk to. I for one don't know where you're seeing this.

Well, I am still acting web admin, even though I haven't been appointed for 2010 yet... :)

In short, I've preferred to use locations for news where there is room for a body of text, where multiple headlines can be viewed, where past stories are archived, and where users can subscribe to a feed. The front page fits all of these, and sub-forums fit all but the last (and may fit the last also--I don't remember offhand what the RSS capabilities of the forum are, but it may possibly support subscribing to a forum section).

Basically, if you are monitoring the front page or forums, you'll be alerted if there's a new post (by RSS for the front page, or by the "new" highlight in the forum)--but the "News" ticker doesn't provide these features. Maybe we can put headlines there as a duplicate, though.

Um, I couldn't see it because I keep that bar minimized using the plus/minus button on the right.

Yeah, if you know what you want to read that'll help. Or if you only have time to check on a couple threads.

I'm doubtful that we'll have any new news regarding the news any time soon, but I agree with the notion of perhaps keeping it up to date with our current front page headline.
