Kumoricon custom Magic Set

I'm making Magic Cards themed around the forum community.  If you want to be included in that and/or want to recommend a generic card for me to add (I'm going to upload the full set when I have 350 cards made), post here with any special requests (if you want to be flying, etc) and a picture of you along with the photographer's name.

A few notes:

Instants are "Posts"

Lands are "Threads"

Factions (creature types) so far are:
Red - Spammers, Forks
Blue - Spoons, Otaku
White - Cosplayers
Green - Gamers, Bros
Black - Staff

40 cards done so far.  The biggest challenge is going to keeping it balanced.  Ideally, I want to actually print off a bunch of these (maybe talk to Bressler about filling out his set and use a bunch of those too) for a Anime Con Block tournament at the con.

Maybe a draft tournament.  That would totally work. :O

I think I'd probably end up being that card that requires way too much to use

Yeah, sure, but let's be realistic, it'll cost 3UU as just a sorcery, so if you want that kind of recurring effect on a creature, you're looking at at least 12UUU.

Megan - Extra turn usually = win the game in most cases, so I'm gonna say no.  I am trying to keep this balanced and want to be able to actually play these cards, so I'm trying to avoid anything overpowered.  I might add in "Wrath of Crackhead" as a special card though.  I do have a card called "LOL"....

Tofu, watch your language. (Not in the bad way, just that Magic has quite a few grammar nuances that if abused, people like Patrick and me could exploit to make cards do entirely different things. In fact, the wording on cards is stiff precisely because of people like me and Patrick.

I'm using Magic Set Editor.  Google it.

I added photographer credit after posting that.

Official cards are inconsistent on punctuation and capitalization.  I'll be running through and checking for consistency when the whole set's done.  There's no stray comma there.  Every comma on that card is grammatically correct.  However, I am making a point of being grammatically erroneous here official cards tend to be, so again, I'll check for consistency when these are done.

Speaking of "Tofu, watch your language," here's something amazingly relevant:

This will be a list of all normalities/standards that Wizard uses with specific cards.
This isn't for color tendencies, just card setup.
Any other things noticed are appreciated.

Color order:
5-Color: WUBRG
4-Color: Starting from the missing color in the 5-Color order, it wraps around. Example, missing B: RGWU
3-Color(1): If all the colors share an ally, starting from the 2 color missing gap, it wraps around. Example: missing U and W: BRG
3-Color(2): If a color doesn't have an ally, start from the lone color, it wraps around. Example: Missing R and U (thus B is the lone color): BGW
2-Color: Starting from the gap of 2 missing colors in the 5-Color order, it wraps around. Example: RW (with UB being the gap)

When specifying subtypes in the text box, the subtype will be capitalized.
Example: Slivers or Lair.

When specifying a supertype in the text box, the supertype will normally be small-case.
Example: legendary or snow

The above rule applies also to normal types.

When using dividing symbols, the next word will be capitalized. Such uses are after a colon or a long dash. This does not apply to after semi-colons.

When using choice effects, the other effects with the "or" will be after the semi-colons. In addition, and despite English rules, there will be multiple "or" for more than 2 choices.
Example: Choose one -- This; or that; or those.

Card names use normal book title terms. So "small" words are not capitalized such as "the" or "of".
Example: Kami of the Crescent Moon

Ability costs are seperated by commas to group them, mana is together, tap symbol is alone, word costs are alone. Also, word costs are always capitalized seperately.

The order to costs is: Mana Cost, Tap, Word Costs.
Example: [2U], T, Sacrifice a creature, Return CARDNAME to its owner's hand: Do this.

Normally, additional card costs are at the top of the text box.
Examples of additional costs: "Kicker R", "Buyback U", "As an additional cost to play CARDNAME sacrifice a creature"

Additional effects of Kicker are normally integrated into the text if possible, otherwise they come after all other effects on a card.

Madness, Cycling*, Flashback are at the end of a card's text box. This doesn't always apply when there is an effect caused due to the card being used in this way, such as Krosan Tusker.

Creatures "gets" +X/+X and -X/-X while they "gain" and "lose" abilities such as defender.
Example: Target creature gets +2/-2 and loses defender until end of turn.

When referencing types or subtypes together, they are sorted alphabetically. Could possibly be true for supertypes as well.
Example: Counter target instant or sorcery spell

Abilities with reminder text will be on seperate lines from other abilities or seperated by semi-colons.

Auras and Equipment attach to permanents. Enchant and Equip are only keyword abilities. However, when referencing a permanent that an Aura or Equipment is attached to, the terms "enchanted" or "equipped" are used.
Example: "BB: Attach Cranial Plating to a creature you control." or "Enchanted creature gets +2/+1."

"As long as" abilities always have their effects listed first.
Example: "Dire Wolves has banding as long as you control a Plains."

If a creature gains a p/t bonus based on a certain variable, the way the ability is written depends on its base p/t. If the creature has a base of 0/0, then its p/t will be written as */* and will have "CARDNAME's power and toughness are each equal to ___." If it has additional p/t, then those numbers will be written, and the creature will have "CARDNAME gets +1/+1 for each ___." The old #+* is out of date. (Disclaimer: Coldsnap doesn't count as an up-to-date set.)

Hybrid mana and snow mana are only used in costs by wizards thus far, and snow mana hasn't been used in the casting cost of spells. All mana produced by snow permanents is considered snow mana.

If a spell or ability would effect how something is played, normally by cost, it effects how it would be "to play" it.
Example: White spells you play cost 1 less to play.

Color-related effects an abilities are ordered based on mana just like casting cost. The color order is described above.
Example:"
R: CARDNAME gets +1/+0 until end of turn.
W: CARDNAME gets +0/+1 until end of turn."

Replacement abilities always begin with "If", not "When" or "Whenever".
Example: "If Darksteel Colossus would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, reveal it and shuffle it into its owner's library instead."

When referencing numbers, anything that specifies a number of cards (including permanents), counters, tokens, turns, or mana with a variable color (mana of your color choice for instance) are all worded such as: a, two, three... Everything else deals in numerics.
Example: "[2], Sacrifice three creature tokens: Add four mana of any one color to your mana pool." or "At the beginning of your upkeep, you draw a card and you lose 1 life."

When a Subtype is referenced — as of Future Sight — it's type is referenced after it to make sure that it's that type of permanent you're referring to. This changed because of the addition of "Tribal" cards.
Example: Sliver creatures have poisonous 1.

but srsly guise, i have been playing for almost as long as tanis, and i definitely understand what he is trying to say. If you have knowledge of the game, there is no reason to not help out. I do agree that tanis isn't exactly the most polite person, but he is helping out a lot, and im sure charlie is actually appreciating the help. He definitely has his work cut out for him on this, so im sure he can use as much help as possible.

I was very confused.

I can't deny or confirm you are impoliet, because thats just how people perceive your writing. What I can
say is it may infact be cool for both yourself and... charlie.... to write up a full set of cards... more cards
means more decks right? I'm sure most of what charlie wants has been planned out and we just need to
make it happen. If you have more ideas for a k-con set (maybe a specifically staff set or something??) I
think it would be way awesome to start another thread and get on it! Cause you certainly have the talent
and the know-how!

Just remember that everyone else on here is here to help tofu too! We may not be as knowledgeable as you,
but we are still trying, we appreciate your imput but, be mindful that some of us are noobies to the forums
and still have our hearts, souls and feelings and when we feel threatened, it makes us sad waffles.

That way it doesn't seem so personal. I think that is the biggest issue, you are so wanting to help you take it
all so personally. But when it is not really your fight, you have to remember who is really doing what. Otherwise
it feels to people like you are taking control/taking over. I know it's not your intention, but becoming so personally
invested that you start calling the shots has that effect on your tone, especially in a place like forums, where
tone is hard to read. Does that make sense? If you make your posts selfless, it'll increase your readership because

That way it doesn't seem so personal. I think that is the biggest issue, you are so wanting to help you take it
all so personally. But when it is not really your fight, you have to remember who is really doing what. Otherwise
it feels to people like you are taking control/taking over. I know it's not your intention, but becoming so personally
invested that you start calling the shots has that effect on your tone, especially in a place like forums, where
tone is hard to read. Does that make sense? If you make your posts selfless, it'll increase your readership because

Altonimbus Entertainment board order, though I amended it to my signature so that no one would think I'm part of staff.

If I were to make my own set now, if it was for Kumoricon, most folks would ask I didn't, as they don't want their pictures to be left with a creepy old gay guy like myself. If it was a personal project, I have no idea where to begin on the artistic parts of it.

Actually, Tom, Tanis is correct; images should generally be in a horizontal format.  I can use extended art format though on rare occasions, which allows more vertical alignments.  However, those are generally reserved for rare/mythic rare cards so it's better to work with landscape rather than portrait.

And something I'd like to say here: just because something is directed at me, or just because I'm a moderator, doesn't mean that I'm right and anyone else who contributes to the conversation is wrong.  This is a recurring problem: "He/She was talking to Tofu, not you," "You're not a moderator so don't tell me what to do," et cetera.  Unless someone is talking to me via PM, everyone and anyone has the right to pitch in, especially when they're simply pointing out a protocol or rule that may have been missed.

Not quite. If I cast it for 8, then on your upkeep (I don't get one yet), you can spend 1 and drop a token on it. Then on my upkeep, you've got a counter and I don't, and you gain one life and I lose the badge. Oh, and you get an extra turn.

If you strip out any references to upkeep and work it like this:



Then it becomes less of a "throw 8 mana down the tubes". As far as the extra turn goes, 8+x is a bit too steep for a possible extra turn, so I omitted it from my version.

I'm not sure.  If there is, then it may make that card TOO powerful.  I'll know after playtesting.  If it does need a paradox haze in order to be a viable high-caliber card (and it should be), then I'll come up with something.  Paradox haze gives target player an additional upkeep each turn.  One problem I see would be the fact that this is the only card in the set so far which would be effected by such a card.
