I'd suggest reading the good fic. It's got a stronger foundation in history, besides being really excellently written.

I read the comics for a long while, but lately I've stopped and have been reading/looking at fandom stuff only. It's sort of improved the series for me. >>

I'd say it's important to read at least some of the comics, but the fandom is really what makes the series excellent. If you read the character profiles you basically have an idea of their character - obviously it doesn't contain it all but a lot of everything is just up to interpretation. Because of the concept that Hetalia is based on, the series really makes you think, and that's why there's a lot of good fic out there for it.~ Sadly I'm not really into fanfic at all; I've tried, I just can't visualize it the same way... haha :3

To a degree. Most of the Hetalia cast are portrayed in canon as relatively one-dimensional. For me, the hardest part of doing Austria is getting myself to slow down and stop cussing. Then it's easy, because he has about two faces.
There's also this whole contentious meta soup about how exactly to interpret the nations. Are they more their current populace/government, or more nostalgic and entrenched in their founding values and histories?

Yeah, but what I'm saying is that the characters are made of history. The comic's one interpretation of history, but if you use others and stick to the same basic personality traits, you're still doing that character but with more depth.

That's kind of what I was saying. Most of the stuff I learned about England when I did him was from fanart and people, not the comic itself.

I like to read/watch all of the official Hetalia material and then dive head-first into some really good fanfiction. I think if you do both, you can sort of get a multi-faceted view of the characters as representing a country in it's government, stereotypes of it's peoples and many other aspects. I also like to go and read about history which has absolutely nothing to do with Hetalia. It's just that Hetalia has given me a better means by which to retain information. If it helps me learn even one thing, then having gotten into Hetalia has been worth it.

Not to mention all of the wonderful people that I've met because of it. <3

Personally I got into Hetalia through the fandom first and then graduated to watching the anime and reading bits and pieces of the comic sometimes. I think I've always been more into the fandom, but the episodes never cease to make me laugh. But really, the best thing about Hetalia for me is that it's made me want to learn new things. Lol, I wish I'd wanted to learn this much when I was actually in a history class. XD

I'm at university in Ashland. Which is home to a Shakespeare festival that is known all around the world. You'd think there'd be a good fabric store ... but they only sell quilting materials. D8 (I'm normally in Portland, but that's five hours away.)

There is no store that sells good costume fabrics in a town where the main (and pretty much only) attraction is a Shakespeare festival. Theatre includes costume-making. Costume-making is very difficult when one cannot buy materials. THIS MAKES NO SENSE.

At first I was like "I'll organize it by region! : D" But then after a bit it was TOO SUBJECTIVE so I decided to reorganize it so it's alphabetical by name of actual nation, ignoring titles like N or Mama or whatever. IT NEEEEEEEDS TO BE ORGANIZED. Mostly so people don't have to ask me questions that can be easily answered in the first post. >>

I jumped a Riku cosplayer and interrogated her about fabric stores. There aren't any, but I already said this.

On another note, there probably is a store with theatrical swords. SO I CAN WASTE ALL MY MONEY BUYING A SWORD. yeahhh.

There are. Everything is in Medford. Unfortunately I don't have any way to get to Medford - I don't know how to drive, and even if I did, freshmen aren't allowed to have cars. I'm limited to what's within walking distance.
