~~OFFICIAL TOURNAMENT LIST FOR KUMORICON 2009~~
« on: August 20, 2009, 02:24:57 am »
~~NOTICE! THE SCHEDULE HAS BEEN SHUFFLED! PLEASE READ BELOW FOR CHANGES!~~

With a little over two weeks to go, Gaming is finally ready to unveil the details of this year's tournaments.

Before I detail everything please pay attention to the following:

   1.   Read the posted information thoroughly before asking any questions...
   2.   There are no Early-Bird signups for tournaments as there are no entry fees and belated follow-up for such events has been deemed too cumbersome
   3.   All sponsored tournament signups will be available in a clear location at Con (Most likely on a wall near the Gaming Check-Out Desk)
   4.   Kumoricon does not sponsor or endorse Money Matches or Tourney Payouts so please refrain from asking for or about them.
   5.   All tournaments unless otherwise specified are Double Elimination, Best 2 of 3, with Best of 3 of 5 for the Finals.
   6.   If a tournament you feel should be held is not listed below, ask yourself the following questions:
      A. Is there a large enough following to warrant an officially ajudicated tournament at Con?
      B. Are you positive that you can acquire the necessary hardware/software needed to run the aforementioned tournament?
(If the answer to both of these questions is Yes, then please PM me so Gaming can work with you to make your tournament happen.)
   7.   NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY ALLOWED IN TOURNAMENT ZONES!

Alright... Enough with the lectures and down to business...

The problem with doing dual system is that likely there will be problems with FightStick system preference every other match-up or so. We also cannot split the PS3 players from the X360 players either because eventually the finals will have to be played on one or the other. As such we decided to lock SFIV, SCIV, and BlazBlue to PS3 only.

At this point my contacts didn't mention any other legendaries...
I assume you are talking mostly about classic legendary pokemon such as Articuno Ho-Oh etc.
If you are going to be at the meeting tomorrow we could discuss this in person...

Articuno is garbage in this revision. You might want to do some research or play the game at a more competitive level and understand it more before making dumb bans.

Whoa... I was merely attempting to understand what the other gentleman was inquiring about, so take a chill pill :P
Also in my experience it is better to refrain from bans unless there is a tangible reason stemming from easily repeatable exploits or imbalanced strategies that can be concretely displayed.
This being said, Pokemon has the longest list I've ever seen of external rules, bans, and regulations. So I was not suprised when Griff posed his question...

Why do wii games use only the gamecube controller? Wouldn't it make more sense to use only a wii controller? I can understand in Brawl but in Mario Kart Wii? The whole idea of the game is to be driving and I just feel like it would be better to use the steering for that one and let the super competitiveness be on the Double Dash tourney instead. I don't think most will agree with me though.

Having a ton of wireless controllers operating at the same time seems to generate some pretty significant controller lag, IIRC (does anyone want to confirm this, or present a counter-argument?).

Also, personally, I find that trying to use the Wiimote for Mario Kart feels whimsical at best.  It's like trying to play with a broken analog stick that will randomly drift to one direction or the other, and since Mario Kart games don't have a whole lot of turn sensitivity, that can be a pretty huge handicap, especially for people who haven't played much Mario Kart on the Wii.  Double Dash will be 2v2 and Wii will be 1v1.  I don't think that people shouldn't be able to compete on a serious level just because they don't have a buddy to race with, so that's my rationale.

I will agree with you on the lag tofu. we had a LAN party with me and a large group with our Xbox 360's (4 total= 16 wireless controlers) and there was some lag with only those. and if i remember last year at the con there was about 3 or 4 times that amount.

As for the pokeman. Ha~ma i was only asking because of the ones that were band in the list. I saw legendaries so i was curious if there were more then just those. sorry if i offended or uupset you in anyway.

Ah yes, the Wiimote question finally came up. I've also had cases where some people would leave their Wiimote synced to a Wii, and while people were playing a tournament match with gamecube controllers, they'd turn off the Wii using the power button on their previously synced Wiimote. Devious.

I can agree though, in a small friendly setting, using the Wiimotes for Mario kart can be a blast since it emulates a wheel. I'm sure outside of tournament play, you can use the Wiimote to your hearts content.

Current rules are fine, the other suggested bans aren't. Reread and try to figure out how I was aiming criticism at. It wasn't staff.

To help people understand the decision to which pokemon were banned, there is a website about pokemon at the competitive level. They're the authorities on what are and are not allowed in tournaments, basically, pokemon is their life. http://www.smogon.com/dp/tiers/ That's the different tiers of pokemon, the "no ubers clause" that is posted for this event basically restricts the use of all pokemon who are too strong under the context of the current version of the game to use in a competitive battle.

A couple things to add TJ

Why isn't Starkiller or Vader banned in SC4

Also for HALO 3, I want to STRONGLY PUSH that controllers used can only be ones provided by Kumoricon.  Why?  Two words, Evil Controllers.  look it up and it'll explain it.  Also that way we don't have to worry about ghost syncs.

On SF4, BB and ALL fighting games, It basically needs to be, if you win, you keep char, if you lose, you may change, changing characters if you win results in a match forfeit.  Also, if you Pad play on PS3, TURN YOUR CONTROLLER OFF.  I basically think there needs to be a rule that states, if you are found screwing around and causing ghost pauses (because if you push the home button during SF4 it'll default as P1 pause, and I saw A LOT of that at EVO, but if you're caught screwing around like that, it should basically be automatic DQ from the entire tournament, and I would go as much to even say ALL TOURNAMENTS entered.

Also TJ, I'm going to try to get TIO working, and if I can, then we might have a really easy time doing brackets.  Lemme see if I can get it going nicely and I'll keep you updated.

Hey ya'll I'll be starting school so time on these forums will me limited.  I will still respond to PM's so if you need to get a hold of me, PM me or send me a message on MySpace.

The rules for Super Smash Brothers Brawl cover all your concerns. At least for that tournament =).

i don't think that you read that right because articuno isn't in the ban list.

EDIT: i should have read more, sorry about that post. that was quite retarded of me.

the only thing i suggest also be banned is breloom. it is nigh unstoppable if switched in at the right time, and that right time comes quite often.

the set it runs is focus punch, substitute, spore, seed bomb.
it only has one definite counter that i know of, and it is very underused (hypno).

breloom is going to be spammed if not banned.

also, if anybody else has questions about specific pokemon being banned or not, contact me and i will explain thoroughly why it is or is not banned

The Pokemon tournament rules are subject to change, so please make sure if you plan on entering, have a few back up Pokemon.

I think the rules need to be finalized and set in stone on Friday, day before con and posted here.

I mean I pretty much have a solid idea on how the SF4 tourney can be run after being at EVO and NWM

OH GOD.
how did i forget.
i forgot to mention hax items. (luck items)

any item that involves luck of any kind should be banned.
example: quick claw which gives the pokemon a 20% chance of going first regardless of its speed.

the reason these items are banned is because they do not require skill, and often make the less skilled of the two battlers win. this can be frustrating and cause conflict during the con/tournament, so these items should remain banned.

soul dew also goes on this list because latias is in this metagame, and it has been deemed uber while holding soul dew.

hold items add an element to the game that is not otherwise there, if you were to ban all of them some pokemon would be rendered powerless and others far too powerful.

I totally didn't read the laughing sorry, I was doing like four things at once, no that I look at it again I can't believe I took it seriously either. Though hax items aren't standerd, they can be obnoxious and lead to complaints.

OH!  I just remembered something while writing an email to Jaki/Rene and TJ

TJ, I think you'll know why I'm saying this but flash photography inside the console gaming room during ANY TOURNAMENTS THAT ARE RUNNING needs to be EXPLICITLY BANNED, no ifs ands, buts or i didn't knows.

There needs to be signs posted as well.  I'm not saying this to sound like a dick, but when you're in a tournament, nothing will anger a player more than being blinded, and several of you know that when you're blinded, that will knock your frame recognition off severely which can completely mess up combos.

quick question about the sfIV tourny, I know it'll be on the ps3, but will there be sticks available? I'd bring my own but it's for the 360.

He may know it, heck any serious tournament player would know this, but if someone walks into the con and goes "oh this is fun" enters a tournament and has a friend take pics, they, most likely, don't know it.  Same goes for general con-goers.  Using flash upstairs and washing out all the features because you failed to bounce it or compensate for it is fine and all, but in tournaments, using flash results in death (not literally of course)

Except all i'd need to do is let you whiff, low forward, cancel into uppercut, FADC ultra.  Done.

Also, DO NOT CROWD THE PLAYERS. If you are a spectator, and by spectator not taking pictures or currently playing, give the players room.  Nothing makes me want to hit people more than when they think its okay to get really close and even have their stuff hit you.

Thats an excellent rule. I REALLY dislike it when people are really close and looking over my shoulder. I mean, if I'm playing a simple game thats fine. But when I'm trying to win, its not ok.

I guess a Worms 2: Armageddon tournament on the 360 might be a little late to suggest now......>.>
I'll be bringing mine if anyone is interested in Worm carnage with funny hats and voices.

We might have Worms at the LAN. Could always run an ad-hoc tournament. But yeah, it's too late to get on the official schedule.

Regarding flash, crowding, and other things that are just rude and obnoxious, etiquette rules should be presented along with each tournament individually.  I will aim to have mine posted in written form for each of my tournaments.  Verbally presenting these rules is also very wise, because people tend to need all the reminders they can get.
