Oftenly Renamed Panel
« on: August 08, 2009, 02:19:57 pm »
Soup Guise
Im JT

Kumoricon '08. 1st day of the con. I was sitting in an empty room, when all of the sudden a tall guy wearing glasses comes in saying things like "hmm. nothing going on in here eh?" and "wonder when the next thing is happening in here". He starting playing with the equipment, and i said "hey, do you know what you are doing with that stuff?". "nope" he replies, "just messin around".
So i went up and joined him. We got the mic's to turn on, and we started talking. People started flowing into the room rapidly within the next 20 minutes, the room was just about full.
We covered a lot of things in our talking and finally we began talking about "What not to cosplay as".
This and other things got us in trouble with the con (not to mention f***ing around with there equipment).
Anyway, during the first panel, someone mentioned that we should call it the "Oftenly Renamed Panel" and it just stuck.
Matt, the guy who was playing with the equipment, and i exchanged phone numbers, and have been in touch, and great friends ever since.

We applied for a panel this year, and it has been approved.

Basically, what we plan to do this year is let the audience drive the discussion.
We want to know what you want to talk about, and we will talk about it. We also have some other activities planned out, so it should be a jolly good time.

We are kind of new to this, but we hope that everyone who comes enjoys it, and we hope to see some new faces, as well as people who were in the original panel last year.

http://oftenlyrenamed.forumotion.com/
Thanks for reading
JT drew

Ok So I was there last year, In fact I'm good friends with JT here, and It was a blast, hell due to this panel I even ended up cosplaying on the second day. I highly recommend this panel.

Did that sound too forced?

GG

I wanted to also mention that this is going to be mostly audience driven. after we introduce ourselves, and maybe get a topic going, we are going to ask you guys to pick a topic.
Also, for future reference, please keep all topics con based if possible.
Basically anything con related is fine, such as: cosplay, anime, gaming etc.
Politics/Religion/Racial discussions are a no no

If anyone would like to discuss anything about the panel, or the things listed above, you are more than welcome to join the oftenly renamed forum here: http://oftenlyrenamed.forumotion.com/

hey guise, i wanted to mention that there will actually be a few more people helping run this panel as opposed to last year wear it was just me and matt attempting and succeeding at keeping about 60-70 people from reaking havoc upon the room and us.

i guess we were just entertaining.

we are also going to start a panel network.
this is an unfamiliar idea to a lot of you im sure, so let me explain.
basically, if you currently run a panel, or want to start one, and want assistance running it, or just somebody to run it with you in general, you can apply to become part of the oftenly renamed network.

this means, that, depending on your panels topic, of course, will hire somebody from our group to help you with setting up your panel, keeping discussion clean, or just being a part of the presentation.
the only catch is that you put oftenly renamed in your panel description or title.

for example.
for kumoricon 2010, my friend evan will be starting a panel for a youtube series we are going to start work on this year called "Party Boy of Portland".
the panel is going to be called: "Oftenly Renamed Presents: Party Boy of Portland" or "Oftenly Renamed: Party Boy of Portland" or we may just put "Part of the Oftenly Renamed Panel network".

So basically, we are going to sponsor your panels, and all we ask for is that you use our name.
We will have people attending kumoricon and sakuracon and try to have people at mewcon.

We will be creating an application for this soon, and will probably start doing this for kumoricon 2010.

What does everyone think of this idea?

this.

it is absolutely nothing like that.
we actually have healthy, con related discussions, where we may in turn end up doing something for the con itself.
not to mention games and artwork.

its like an hour long convention within itself, which is why it is attractive.

I probably should be offended but then again, you are somewhat right. None of us are preteens though and I don't think we've ever yelled "Random Potatoes." It more refers to our non-sequential approach to hosting an amalgam of things (all of which seem to have been picked up by others and turned into single events, such as a RPS Tourney in the form of the bucket and a panel solely dedicated to Pirates vs. Ninja, something we didn't start but did do on a grand scale). Nevertheless, I'm sure our cover makes us seem a lot like you describe, but that's why you can't really judge a book by its cover can you.

Also, this Oftenly Renamed Panel sounds a lot different from the RP when you discuss it with its creator(s) which I have done on a few car rides. So its kind of an invalid comparison.

so we are thinking about making some t-shirts.
possibly with quotes from us, and the panel.

We were thinking of one that had 2 old people on it and it says "The Normals"
and on the back it would say Oftenly Renamed.
or something to that effect.

Yeah, but that's not the point.
It's not that you're spamming in you're own thread, it's that you're spamming.

but see here is the thing its not spam if its on topic, which it is always on topic. we just change topics alot if i say bla bla bla and it gets a reply of bla bla bla its now a topic tell it gets changed. also you changed the topic with your well covered up spam.

The topic is the panel though, that's why the thread is here. Topic creep is what creates spam posts, we have the off topic forum specifically for discussions that flow to different topics and mod tools to split the convesations off into new threads so the old ones remain intact.

Mods just don't do that anymore if the threads aren't in one of the "important sections".

2 things.
1. tom is now the official mini mod of the panels forum
2. because this thread is about said panel, and said panel has no definite topic, this thread therefore has no definite topic, yet it is still on topic, to the panels forum, as we are still talking about our panel.
a topicless topic being on topic.

I know that the panel is about nothing in particular. However this forum was designed so that people could plan their panels and discuss what would go on AT them. There are other forums for discussing the same topics as are covered at panels. For instance, the Pocky Club Presents panel. If someone wanted to come on the forums and talk about the newest Pocky flavors, they should create a new thread in general discussion or maybe the chat forum depending on how silly they're going to be. They shouldn't post that stuff in the Pocky Club Presents thread because that thread, while related to Pocky, is about the event itself, the panel at the convention. We don't use the thread for Randomness of the Internet to talk about memes and videos that we've seen now, just ones we saw at the panel.

If i was a mod I would have split the topic by now, including this discussion. The current mods don't do that because the LAST generation of mods got booted because too many whiny spammers complained to the admins about them. This gen of mods are too soft, they weren't in the war. I seen things man.

Tom, you must not have been around in January (happy birthday, Tofu; here's a ton of pointless spam and retarded drama to deal with).

This topic is too chaotic to split appropriately.  The best I could do with it would be to split it at the first response and dump it in Off-Topic.  Or just go through and delete posts.

Really though, this discussion doesn't belong here.  If you want to offer us some feedback, please do so in the right section.

I wish I could go to Mewcon with you...unfortunately, by the time I knew about it, it was too short of notice for time off at work as well as money. Got too much $$$ tied up in cosplay & other stuff right now....not to mention I have to start Christmas shopping beginning of Nov. Blow them away with your panel up there!  :D

Okay, this topic has been enough of a spamfest.  Please create a new topic to discuss the panel for next year.  Do not make it into a random discussion topic or it will be deleted.  Do not discuss panels for other conventions in this section of the site; please go to the site of the appropriate convention and post there.  You may link to the discussion there from here if you would like to.
