Question for Apples to Apples fans...
« on: July 08, 2009, 04:58:22 pm »
Right now I'm planning out a convention edition of Apples to Apples that you can take home and and play anywhere.  It'll be a deck of around 300 cards, and should be affordable.  However, I have an important question: expansion or stand-alone?

Basically, what I'm asking is whether people who are interested already own a copy of Apples to Apples. It works really well to swap in convention-themed red cards and otherwise use the original Apples to Apples green cards. On the other hand, if you don't already own the original game, that ends up being a problem.

Oh, also: I'll be running another Apples to Apples panel this year where you can try out the con edition. Hopefully this time we'll be better able to meet the demand for decks.  Check the schedule after it's posted if you'd like to come. :)

I would totally buy one not matter if it was just red cards or both.

I would buy an expansion since I have the game already, but I would just as quickly buy an entire new set if it was a con edition. Either way, I'd get it.

Not that I have enough info from the poll to draw any conclusions, but I had an idea or two about how to handle this.

What if the entire game were handled in the form of themed sets? Each set would have around 75 cards, and you could pick out your favorite sets to create a deck tailored to your tastes.  Here are some possible themes for sets:

Events (official convention events)
Fandom (fanspeak and inside references)
Anime (series and genres)
Gaming (video gaming and unplugged)
The Internet (memes and internet lingo)
Swag Bag (various objects of fan interest)
Staff (Kumori Con staff have a lot of inside jokes...)

To make sure nobody has to buy cards they don't need, a set of green cards would be available separately. It would also be around 75 cards, though, and I'd recommend using the original Apples to Apples green cards instead (if you have them).

Additionally, I think I may be ready to announce a name for this game; something shorter than what it's been called so far.

I like the idea of just getting the green cards separately, would make more sense for people who already have the game.

I know you're not going to like this thought, but one upside to not including the green cards is that it encourages players to buy the original game.

...Or perhaps I should say to "own" the original game, as $25-30 is a lot to spend to facilitate a small card game purchase. Given that high price, I'm still considering offering companion green cards. We'll see...

Well, whatever you decide on, I will definitely pick it up. Even if I did have to buy the whole game again, whatever, it'd be worth it. ^_^ I will be moving out and have to get my own copy anyway, heh

I would probably buy the whole game, but treat it as an expansion pack and mix it with the original Apples to Apples. I do like the idea of themed sets. : )

Simon - Minor Acts of Heroism
?? Essence - Red Hood & the Outlaws

Thank you for specifying that, because it helps me decide what size to make the cards. :)

The backs will be different, though, because 1. color glossy printing would be expensive, 2. I'd rather not copy their logo, and 3. even if the logo were the same, you'd probably still be able to tell which cards are from the anime set just from the card texture.

Update: I've found a printer with a good price. This time around I'm going for affordable, which means black ink on red card stock. Let me know whatcha think.
