Title: Epic Rock-Paper-Scissors Battle Skit
Post by: TurboSaiyanJason on January 11, 2009, 07:53:47 pm
The skit will be a turn-based rock/paper/scissors battle.

There will be two fighters. The different sign holders will hold up attack menus, points scored or lost, and track health bars of the fighters. The first fighter to defeat the other by scoring 10 points against them, or the healthiest fighter at the end of the match, wins the battle.

The active fighter steps forward along with their attack menu holder. The player chooses what attack the fighter uses, and which enemy fighter to target. The two fighters resolve the attack with rock paper scissors or number guessing, and play out the results, then steps back and the next fighter goes.

I will also have a small tournament in case people want to learn how to play on Friday at 6:00. Practice for the skit will be during the tournament and on Saturday at 4:00, then the tech rehearsal at 8 AM Sunday. My advice, get some sleep on Saturday night, stay up all night long after the skit is over. Zombies look cool on stage, but only when they're not needed to operate like a well-oiled machine.

I currently have:
Fighters
Myself (SS4 Goku)
V.S.
RozenMaiden_Girl (Dark Link)

Sign Ninjas
soundninja12, Botan (Goku's attack menu)
nekovamp13, Roxas (Goku's damage signs)
TheTerribleTrivium Saber (Goku's power attack signs)
Marluxia, herself (Dark Link's attack menu)
Josh, L (Dark Link's power attack signs)
Sabata, Light (Dark Link's damage signs)
Hannah, Rock Lee (Goku's and Dark Link's health bars)

Most spots are filled out, but there's room for more.

I could be a sign holder or an announcer~
Title: Re: RPG Battle Skit
Post by: TurboSaiyanJason on May 07, 2009, 11:45:13 pm
Yay and yay! A warrior and a props ninja. The announcer calls out the name of the move the active fighter is using, to the audience. And the sign holder either keeps track of one of the life gagues, or holds up damage numbers for the audience to see. basically, in the crowd's view, it's like watching a video game RPG battle...hence the name of the skit.

I was originally going to run Trunks and Android 18 from Dragonball Z, and have the tournament/demo be the buildup to the skit battle. But like I said, any character is welcome.

I posted in the Pocky War thread that I will be too pre-occupied with New Days' skit to help out with that, and I'm sorry but the same will apply to being a sign-holder for the RPG Battle. I'm really sorry, I hope you can find someone to help you out!

I'm looking for a skit to be in this year. I might want to join in on this one.

I plan on cosplaying as Yusei Fudo from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and Gold Ranger from Power Rangers: Zeo

hey now...Gold Ranger might be very useful in a match. 8) I'm also hoping to hold a tournament panel to teach people the rules of the game.

I'd be a sign holder.
let me think... second day, that's either Allen or Kurama, depending on who I get in to cosplay chess as (I will get in! I think I can, I think I can!)

If you still need people, I'm in.
If you want Kurama or Allen

Alright, good. Your job as displays coordinator, will be to translate to the audience what's happening in the battle through holding up attack names and scoring of points, and lastly flipping points cards over on the fighter's health gauge to show how much more they can take.

There will be minimum two sign holders, one for each fighter.

I might have to have a tag team battle here, and if we get enough people, fighters and or effects and background people (like in street fighter) this skit can shoot up to 5 minutes. Meaning more mayhem and combat!

I'm really interested in helping out with this skit, it sounds like a lot of fun. I would be happy to do anything. Opponent, sign holder, and battle announcer all sound like fun to me.

I'll be cosplaying Saber from Fate Stay Night

I'm in no matter what.
You can choose out of my cosplays now.
I canceled Allen Walker (my Lavi quit on me), so I'm being:
Renge (OHSHC)
Sora (KH1)
+
Wolf-Girl commentator (Yu Yu Hakusho)

I'm wearing wigs for all 3 so it wont be a big thing for me to do costume changes, and none of them wear make up really (except my whiskers) so that would be really easy.

If you want, I'll just pick, but if you really care, then I'd go with choosing yourself.

Thankies,
Katie

I'm going as Wedding Yuna from FFX and my friend's going to be my Summon Shiva. Need a hand? ^^
Title: Re: RPG Battle Skit
Post by: TurboSaiyanJason on July 12, 2009, 09:52:49 pm
We need the wolf-girl announcer and Yuna can join the party. What I also need is some help in making two sets of poster signs:
numbers -1, 1, 2 and 3
Janken, Weapon, Light Power, Medium Power, Weapon Power, and Ultimate Power
3 display boards with 5 red, and white posters, or hats with smaller red and white cards, for life gauges.

I am also hoping to have a rough test fire on pre-reg day, and a panel to teach the other attendees how to play.

Sure! I'm a seamstress, painter, cosplay-maker, and all around craft person, so I should be able to help.

Hm... but the problem could be... is cosplay chess before, after, or during the skit and cosplay contests, I wonder?
Title: Re: RPG Battle Skit
Post by: TurboSaiyanJason on July 16, 2009, 08:58:22 pm
I'm hoping to do some of the signs at the July workshop. The health bars will be the hardest to do. if it's only two real fighters, they will be big. If there's 4-6 total, then headbands will be needed

Ok, well my Vega cosplay is not really happaning. (never have time to work on it) But if am not Vega am Suigintou.
I think you sould keep the tag team thing the same.

I just realised something.
I don't have time to make the fox-girl, no matter how much luck I have at finding things, I can't do it.
I'm just going to make a Botan, it's simpler, more people would recognize it, and I could wear it for MEW because I could wear warm clothes under it.
Sorry.

Wait a minute... I forgot, is there a rule against being in two skits? I can't remember... *goes to look it up*

Oh, and CLAP_attack... do you still need an eyepatch for Roy? *looks at siggy* 'Cause I can make one.
Title: Re: RPG Battle Skit
Post by: TurboSaiyanJason on July 17, 2009, 11:26:23 pm
It says you may enter two skits, but you can only count cosplay for one and skit engineering for the other. The Pocky War I have will count for my skit design since the costumes are only headbands and struggle swords. This one I'm hoping to have count for cosplay, though it seems good enough for skit too, and I can't run it next year if I did it this year. T_T.

Just in case, would anyone object to doing it as a demo for my panel, or to aid in the epic battle video they're doing the day before the con? This one will need some practice since though the moves are easy, they are tricky at first to know when to do what. Once I count up who's in and who can be what, I'll see if this one needs more practice or is ready to go for this year. The skit turn in date is Aug 20th. If anyone is coming to the dance tomorrow night, I'll be there and we can practice a few battles on paper or just while we're dancing.
Title: Re: RPG Battle Skit

Sorry to double post, but here's what we have so far:

Fighters:
Myself
dark_master (Gold Ranger)
RozenMaiden_Girl (Suigintou/Vega)
CLAP_attack (Roy Mustang)
Mitsukai Mizu Amaya+Summon (Yuna)

Sign/sound Ninjas:
soundninja12 (sign)
TheTerribleTrivium (sound, sign)

This would be a 2 on 3 battle, until Yuna brings in her summon to make it a 3 on 3. Each fighter would have 5 HP. The party with the most scored points, 15 max. at the end of 4 minutes wins the battle, then a 1 minute victory dance.

Yes it will be.

Sad news, two of the fighters can't make it.

Good news, that leaves Goku and Vega in a one on one match to 10 points. The sign holders will still be the same.

Ok I am Really going to Try to get my cosplay of Vega Done. I will be Suigintou, or If you like I was going to be Dark Link from Legend of Zelda. This is what I was going to be if I couldn't be Vega, so dont have your hopes up on me being Vega. But if I can get it done this weekend we are golden!
If The practice is in Eugen (sp?) The week be for K-Con may be I can get my Anut to take me (I am only 13).  And if I do go do I come in cosplay?

Dark Link sounds perfect for a good v.s. evil battle. So if Vega can't come, then Dark Link may have some nefarious plans for Princess Zelda, that Goku shows up to prevent. Or if Link has him tied up, Suigintou can fill in as a fighter in a World Tournament exhibition match.

And as far as practice goes, Eugene is a little far off for me but I'll see what I can arrange. I forgot, you're in Sisters. :)

yes, the Pocky War will commence next year with Vega as a ninja henchman. But I also want to try it at MEWcon if they have a contest, since it's a different con and not a repeat performance.

And yes, less fighters but more support.

The Manga and Exotic Worlds Convention. It's on December 31st and January 1st. I know some may have plans of their own during that time. Though I checked and they don't have a skit category.

Also I now have the supplies I needed to make the Pocky swords, but I also think that I can get more people in time for next year. By then I can have enough to run the full skit. Both chocolate and strawberry clans and their two allied villages.

As far as the skit goes, if we can get at least 10 people, fighters and light and sound crew, I'd like to run the battle to The Pretender by Foo fighters (4:30), followed by a final fantasy victory theme.

I also will be sending out a diagram of the different positions on the stage for everyone very soon.

Title: Re: Epic Rock-Paper-Scissors Battle Skit
Post by: TurboSaiyanJason on August 14, 2009, 05:18:15 pm
That gave me a great idea. If you can't find it, then you could walk around on stage and say you're on a quest to find your lost boot which you left in Zelda's castle last time. Then at the end of the skit, whether Goku or Dark Link wins, Zelda is heard (words seen) from off stage saying "Hey Dark Link...boot to the head!" and a boot is thrown at him. ;D ;D

That would be golden!

Actually, I have you set up for holding up how much damage is dealt to Dark Link.
Ex. Dark Link takes 2 damage, hold up the 2 sign behind him so the crowd can see.

I'm thinking of having the voices before and after the match pre-recorded. Otherwise the battle is just music and effects. Trivium will be tracking either Goku's health bar, or both health bars if we can't get someone for Dark Link. This will mean that the health bar person will be effectively be offstage in front, a perfect place for a sound ninja with a laptop.

Bummers. When you do the skit though you'll be walking onstage with only one, while a stage ninja posing as Zelda offstage will toss the other one to you. I'll PM you a copy of a sample game and the story script around it.

Skits for 1-5 participants shall be no longer than 3.5 minutes; skits with more than 5 participants may be allowed up to 5 minutes for performance, at the Cosplay Coordinator’s discretion.

I just now noticed this! We can have a 5 minute long skit. All the people we have now are fine. Anyone else who still wants to help are welcome.

Before the convention, is hard to do, since half of the crew is in Southern Oregon and the other half lives up near Portland. After pre-reg on Friday, and again on Saturday on the weekend of the con, we can run through a few games and work all the bugs out. If anyone near Portland wants to meet, I'd like to try meeting next Tuesday or sometime next week. Anyone who can make it to Eugene from Southern Oregon, I can meet you halfway, again sometime next week, looking at Thursday.

Also can everyone who's on my crew PM me their phone numbers so I can fill them in and update when needed?

I'm thinking of holding a practice at either Waterfront Park under the Morrison Bridge, or at Pioneer Courthouse Square across the way from the hotel the con will be at anyway. During and right before the con, we'll be rehearsing in the square.

I also have two more crewmates that might join this mighty machine of sign ninjas.

If this is all we have, then the health bar tenders will also hold up the signs for the Power attacks. Also whichever fighter wins, their health bar tender gets to hold up the "winner!!" sign.

Title: Re: Epic Rock-Paper-Scissors Battle Skit
Post by: TurboSaiyanJason on August 20, 2009, 12:31:41 am
Goku isn't that mean. Dark Link might be. The spine thing I'll think about, followed up of course by the boot to the head. Jello sadly is one of the squishy messy products that the contest people won't allow.

Post by: sabata on August 20, 2009, 12:35:14 am
but. how will the heart be "finsished himed?" oh well. i will still make the jello for my fun. MUAHAHAHA. i will call it paul and marry him and then one day accidentally sit on him.then get arrested for murder. ahh, my bright future lies ahead..............but anyways. i don't know where the spines would be. unless you got a skeloten, like from a science class. then idk where else.
Title: Re: Epic Rock-Paper-Scissors Battle Skit
Post by: nekovamp13 on August 20, 2009, 12:42:35 am
You couldn't use jello even if we wanted. Can't have any messy effects on the stage...We could use it if we want to tape it outside or something...

i meant just for a snack. jello is nice on a hot day. i might have to stock up on arizona at the con. MMMMmmmm iced tea. but so we are practicing before and during the con? any specific times set up yet?

It's down to three music tracks.
Fighting Dreamers (Naruto Opening)
Super Survivor (Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi game opening)
The Pretender (by Foo Fighters)

Who thinks what would work best?
Though Super Survior is a great track and also in theme with Goku fighting. These other two sound good too.
Title: Re: Epic Rock-Paper-Scissors Battle Skit
Post by: sabata on August 22, 2009, 05:14:54 pm
none. MORTAL KOMBAAAAT! i think i have that track. on my cell. it has no lyrics, just the song....
Title: Re: Epic Rock-Paper-Scissors Battle Skit
Post by: TurboSaiyanJason on August 22, 2009, 11:08:13 pm
This isn't a MK scene. It's Dragonball and Legend of Zelda. I would have run the MK theme if we were doing a skit 3 min skit and actually had a character from it. Also since this is RPG based, I was going to throw down the two fighting themes from FF7, the game not the movie. I could have done one winged angel, but it runs for 6 min.

The three that are listed all fill the the time we're allowed. The battle could end sooner, or it could drag on until time runs out. When the victory music plays the battle ends. If both fighters have health remaining, the one with the most wins the battle. If there's a tie in health, then it's a draw. If one fighter wins before the main song ends, then the victory music will play and everything will conclude as normal. No matter who wins, Dark Link gets his boot back at the end.

Also Super Survivor has no lyrics either. It has the most potential so far. The other two have great setups at the start. I could run the Legend of Zelda theme for the first 30 seconds, then kick in S.S.
Title: Re: Epic Rock-Paper-Scissors Battle Skit
Post by: nekovamp13 on August 22, 2009, 11:14:17 pm
I think you should try and combine all three. Or just go with your idea...That would actually sound good! I say go with that ^^

How many people do you have so far?
Title: Re: Epic Rock-Paper-Scissors Battle Skit
Post by: TurboSaiyanJason on August 22, 2009, 11:27:56 pm
we have 2 fighters and 6 sign crew, we could use two more sign people or more.

Also here's the different lengths:
Super Survivor 4:12
Fighting Dreamers 4:13 (16 sec intro)
The Pretender 4:30 (30 sec intro) more time to fight
FF7 Victory 0:54
Indestructible by Disturbed 4:38

I'll have the final song list by Monday.

Is anyone near Portland busy on Tuesday?
Is anyone in Southern Oregon busy on Thursday?
I'd like to hold a group meet to practice if we can.

Well I would like to practice a little before you head out, so we don't have to only do it on Sunday Morning at 8:00. Also announcement for my machine crew and fighters (reminding myself too), get a good night's sleep Saturday night. Friday and Sunday night you can be an insomniac. I'd rather not have stage ninjas take over for walking zombies.

Anyone coming to pre-reg and can show up for the con-sized epic rock-paper-scissors game I'd like to practice with, and even battle against.

I'll be hovering around as Red the ninja and Inuyasha on day 0. Both have red on, just Inu has white hair and maybe a big sword. And sabata, you get your wish for a "Finish Him!" moment. To witness a redonkyulous fatality of boot to the head. I've added the MK dude to the list of sounds.
Title: Re: Epic Rock-Paper-Scissors Battle Skit

Title: Re: Epic Rock-Paper-Scissors Battle Skit

by the way. the boot to the head thing, the person will have to have good aim.
Title: Re: Epic Rock-Paper-Scissors Battle Skit
Post by: TurboSaiyanJason on September 01, 2009, 08:19:04 pm
I found the "Finish Him!" voice but not the fatality one. The one I did find, was too quiet and poorly recorded. Because Zelda finishing Dark Link off was unexpected, the announcer will go "My goodness!" And the boot will be foam, but the thrower will be right behind Dark Link offstage. Even if it doesn't hit her/him in the face, it will still nail him in the upper region (head, face, chest). Also since he's only that close it doesn't need to be thrown very hard, even just a light pushing throw. If it ends up hitting low, then it's still a "boot to the head" Just only the crowd will know that, while our Dark Link will luckily be a girl and feel no pain. Though I'm going to ask and clarify if the "head" reference will be allowed or not. To be safe, aim high.

The first practice for us will be Friday, 6:00 PM down at waterfront park. The second one is going to be Saturday around 4:00 in the courtyard or Pioneer Courthouse Square, whichever is less crowded. The cosplay pre-meet runs from 9-10 Pm and on Sunday the tech walkthrough is 8:00 AM to 11:00.

I have speakers, a CD player, the Rocky IV soundtrack and a backpack to tote it all. First we'll run through the basic functions of each station, then chain them together slowly, throw out a random attack code from the script, then run through the whole battle thing step by step. We'll just pretend Dark Link is a ghost on Friday. But we will run through the practice again Saturday afternoon, again slow at first then work up to skit speed.

The smoke clears...many couldn't make the journey to the epic battle, but while I fell back home to gather my thoughts of the impending doom with no Dark link and Goku's cosplay unfinished, those that stayed behind banded together and unleashed the rematch of, since MEWcon, Red the Ninja and Rock Lee, complete with other Naruto distractions to enhance the hilarity. TvT I can't thank you enough.

Though we did not win, we succeeded where others might have given up. It may have been my skit to start with, but everyone else helped to make it happen. Those that couldn't show are forgiven. My original script will be saved for Sakuracon, with more time to practice and prepare.

We were in fact in the main events room in the basement level, and delayed. We were scheduled for 8:15, but were then AFTER the walk-on costumes. Our music/sound mix was mixed a little too well. We couldn't hear the sound effects over the song. Even so, my Goku cosplay would have looked sloppy and rushed, so would the skit if we used my original script. My Rock Lee cosplayer stepped in as my opponent and brought along her other Naruto cosplayers. And so they organized a backup skit that was MUCH simpler and twice as random and therefore, funnier.

I still want to do my original skit next year, with you as Dark Link again if you want, this time with more practice opportunities. I found that Sakuracon skits can only be 4 minutes long, so I'm thinking of running my Pocky War up there and seeing how it does. Now that I've been in a skit and seen others in action, I can better predict what is needed and how long preparing everything will take.

I'm sorry we couldn't find each other in time. Not many things went as planned this weekend for anyone, but we pressed on and live to tell the tale.

I couldn't find my party that had my hotel key at Sakuracon, and lugged my luggage all around the convention center. That's why I promised myself to somehow get a cell phone. I'm glad I had one for Kumoricon or I might have given up on my floundering skit, or never got to meet up with my crew in the first place.

You can not conceive how lost a person can get in that hotel, or how quickly the time can pass when you're hanging out with con friends. My god, I never realized how specifically I had to read the thread. I didn't know what was going on, I ended up getting there a crap load later than I thought, and then I realized that I still had sewing to do on my obi. So I convinced my mom in to sewing it, and went downstairs to look for you guys, no luck. Then I heard "KATIE" and I went and talked to people for a while.
Please, do not consider me irresponsible, I just am easily distracted.

You weren't the only one with last minute sewing to be done on your cosplay. I worried myself all the way through day 0 and half of day 1, spending almost all night on the signs, which didn't help in the mornings either. When I thought that I had everything set, there was more left unfinished, including how to get a hold of my players and what to do if things went awry.

Once again my script demanded precise precision :P...from all players, and left no room for error. Now I know that there should always be a cushion for a mishap to arise. My script was so stacked up that it was like playing Jenga on a rocking chair. The backup one that my players came up with used fewer blocks, but with random fireworks popping up in between. Next year's Pocky War will be smooth and cushioned and will rock the house!...er hotel.

Advice:
When you organize a skit, have everyone's phone number so you can arrange to meet them at a time when none of them have internet because you have to pay extra for it at the cursed hotel.

The only flaw in that plan, which couldn't be helped, was that my Dark Link did not have a cell on her to call or be called. I remember up at Sakuracon on day 1, I was lugging my stuff around waiting for my roomies to get through the long grueling line of registration mid-day, and didn't have a cell to call them with. So I promised myself that by K-con I'd have a working cell phone. At least it was useful on the way home, otherwise I wouldn't have known about the backup skit idea.

Another thing I failed to do, as well as have most of the stuff done weeks in advance, is determine what my backup plans were for problems. I was assuming that everything would go smooth and perfect and the tech crew had everything we needed. I didn't ask myself, what if some of my players didn't have a number to call? Where would they meet and what time? Do they have a map of the con on them? As far as my spotlight issue went, what if they didn't have a giant theater spot to use? Do I have a backup CD of the sounds and music each? A lot of questions I plan to have answered way before the next contest.

I'm planning on making a video of the original skit with a full game and youtube it. This way we can take as much time as we need in performance length, and the special effects would be done on computer while the players simply get recorded doing each separate phase of their attack instead of rushing and smooshing them all at once. While a much more organized contest version is planning on being done at Sakuracon.
