Title: How are you saving up for the con?
Post by: nikkiolie on January 10, 2009, 08:50:33 pm
Sakuracon is coming up and kumoricon is less than a year away. I was just wondering how people were saving money for the cons and what they will be spending the money on.

The main way I am getting my money is through working as well as tax returns. I am also going to be taking cans in and saving the spare change I have.

I'm going to be getting a hotel room for both cons and I am already registered so the rest of the money will go to merchandise. ;D

I don't save up :D

I spend my my money on cosplay, registration, and hotel rooms so by the time that's all done with I just waste away any of my remaining money on random con stuff.

ok but how do you get the money for that?

I get allowance when I work around the house. and then I'm trying to get a job as a babysitter or something. :/ money is also given for my holidays and good grades. hope both of those go well. >_<

I plan on spending it on a room, doujins, manga, art, and any misc items I can't find anywhere.

I usually set a plan of what I can spend on cosplays and pre con stuff and then what I get to spend at con.

Work, work, and some more work after that. I really only spend my money on a few things: electronics, costuming, cons, and PDXLAN. I make good money where I work so I can usually save up money fairly easily. I'm going to attempt to go to AX this year so I'll have to be saving a bit more than normal up to the summer.

Well that is good to hear. I will try very very hard not to spend the money on other things. I have a very hard time with that >_<

What do you do Trumby?

! You are quick, haha.

I work at a place called Precision Castparts. We make parts for the howitzer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howitzer), a ton of different airplane engines, and other gas turbine engines. If you've ever flown Southwest your plane had a part that my company makes in it. What I do is hard to describe to people that have never done something like it, but I'm a grinder. We grind out the defects the other departments (like x-ray) find in the parts then blend the welds that are put into those areas.

So far ive got my hotel and registration for SakuraCon done. I plan to continue working part time and pay for the majority of everything with my Tax Return.
Title: Re: How are you saving up for the con?
Post by: nikkiolie on January 10, 2009, 10:20:18 pm
I think that my tax returns will cover most of it. But just in case I will have some. Plus it would be a good idea to start saving, maybe even opening a savings account ;D

The way I save for cons is being frugal. xD
Unless if I'm spending on cosplay supplies.
Title: Re: How are you saving up for the con?
Post by: nikkiolie on January 10, 2009, 10:28:27 pm
I have spending issues so a savings account would really help me  get control over it. I think if I put half of my pay check into savings by the time I get out of college I should have more than enough to pay for many cons till I get a good job XD
Title: Re: How are you saving up for the con?
Post by: DancingTofu on January 11, 2009, 02:53:12 am
Well, by the end of this month, I'll have somewhere between $300 and $600 sitting in a savings account, depending on a lot of various factors.  I'll hopefully be getting a job, internship, commission, contract, or SOME form of income this year as well.  My classes are pretty much all paid for at this point, and I do chores for my home and board, so my income, besides what I'm spending on conventions, is going right into investing in better musical equipment, which will hopefully be paying for itself in a few years. :P

For Sakuracon, I'm going to hopefully be signing up for Gaming Staff and staying in a super-duper-cheap hotel I stayed in last year.  I don't go anywhere other than gaming, so besides admission, hotel, and gas, all the money I'll be spending there is $10 on a Magic Booster Draft tournament.
Next up comes a project I have for MEW Con which will cost me about $350 after shipping expenses, which I'll be working on over the summer.
Then comes Kumoricon.  I've already paid my staff dues, I'll just have to worry about getting there.  I'll hopefully be staying with friends.  If not, that'll be $60.  Again, I won't be leaving the game room except to sleep and play piano, so I don't need any more money.
I'll hopefully be going to Orycon in the fall, which will cost me some money.  Not sure at this point.  Like every other con ever, I don't plan on spending money anywhere other than reg, room, and transportation.
Finally, MEW Con.  Hopefully, the con will have the funds to pay for a Programming Suite and the con won't cost me anything other than those $350 I mentioned earlier.  If I do wind up having to pay for the room myself, I can probably handle that.  Besides that, the money I spend will depend on the money I have.  If I have $2000 lying around, I'm buying 10 more 27" Flatscreen CRT's for Gaming.  That's probably not going to happen though. :P

more flat screens would be nice in the gaming room. I'm sure they would really appreciate that ;D

It seems like you have a solid plan for your money

I always found it useful to save left over lunch money when I was trying to save up for something. Or starve myself a little to save like $5 per week or so.

Well I won't be going to Sakuracon and I don't have a job so really there is no way for me to save up, heh. I can put a little of my financial aide away for later, but by the time Kumoricon gets here I will have had to start paying it all back anyway, so...yeah...and I will have a wedding to save and plan for, which is no cheap thing, lol.

But hopefully I get this job I've got a call back for. I may work at Noodles & Co. soon! ^_^

O.O it would be great to have a button the size of your face with a picture of your face on it XD

I would so buy one

o___O Those would be huge. The biggest size I know of is 6". That could fit most of one face, depending on the size of the face... xD

I'm making 1.25" sized buttons.

No, I'll make anything that people request to the best of my abilities. I don't want to limit my market. :)

(Though at K-con if I get a table with my friends at the artists alley we'll have a set selection there.)

That's the plan.

I still have to figure out the exact cost of materials per button but I think they're going to be $1. I feel like the most people would probably buy them at that price and it would be the easiest to handle.

I actually have an entire separate savings account at my bank reserved for Kcon. I won't be able to go to Sakuracon (maybe next year...) so every paycheck I'm setting aside $15 for the con. By June I should have $300 saved, 100 of which will go to hotel, another 100 probably to my cosplay, and the rest of that to food for the room. After that though I'll still be saving for con stuff and art.

and I think I might've found some possibilities for a some jobs. I think I'll be able to handle everything I need too for each con. :3

it used to be in oregon that you could only return 144 cans or bottles at a time but around 2005 or 6 or somthing they removed it and let people return more then that

prob cuz if peeps had more then 144 they would just send them in with some one else (back when store clerks counted the cans) or cuz with the macines there is no real way to stop some one from returning more then 144

I can probably get you a buyer in less than a week if you give me a model, make, condition, picture, and asking price.  Bonus points if you let me play it so I can give potential buyers an honest appraisal.

Its way out of tune right now....I'll have to look into a few things but it is a Ibanez GAX70 in dark red. I've had it for about four years, there is a strap, amp, soft case, cord for the amp, tuner and stand that I can sell with it.

As for the condition I don't have any pictures just yet but I can get some. There are a few scratched on it and when I do get some pictures I will be sure to get close ups on those. As for the asking price I'm not too sure yet.

One word: Cat.
My grandparents "live" with us. But they're very active, and my grandfather used to be the CEO of YMCA, so they've got a bit of money XD They travel about 10 months out of the year, and for about 3/4 of that time, their cat is left with me.

I won't lie and say this isn't ridiculous. They give me 200$ for two months of babysitting A CAT XD
Its crazy and totally unrealistic, but I'm not complaining.

Thats how I "save up" XD

I spend it on my cosplay, merchandise, and artist alley.

Alright I will get nine paychecks between now and kumoricon and if each one averages out to $100 then that is almost 1000, but I'm sure once summer hits I will be making a lot more than $100 every two weeks, probably more like $200 ;D

Yeah that may be a problem. Ask to do more things around the house for a bigger allowance.

I didn't make very much last year, so I got an EIC check along with my tax return this year. I just stuck that extra check in my savings for con this time around. Last year they did the government stimulus check thing, so I paid for con with part of that. Usually I just keep 100$ aside from two or three checks before con though~

I get paid on the fifth, unless the fifth is a saturday or sunday.  Thankfully it will be a saturday in September, so I'll be getting paid just the day before (how convenient!!)  And I'm just gonna' "blow" most of my paycheck.  ;D  So not really any saving up for me.

I did all my purchasing seperatly, so whenever I get paid I just spend it on what I need.  I don't really save up.  Workin' at the ol' DQ is getting this all paid for  8)

but im feeling pretty confident, last time is aved money like that it was just over the summer, one piggy bank and that one piggy bank was 300 bucks. times that by four and then add in that i got my self a job at the ice cream parlor lined up for this summer along with extensive baby sitting since four little kids on my block are home from school for the summer. : ) Im looking at a nice little bundel.

I don't normally plan to buy things at the con, so I don't really worry about money-saving... My money either goes towards school or cosplaying.

i do, its my only real chance to buy things ussualy. from things to props, prints, DVD sets (i buy in sets not just single DVD's, faster and cheaper that way, where I DVD shop doesnt ussualy have sets or anime for that matter) d=manga i just cant seem to find, ect.... that and my saved money also goes towards my cosplay, my hotel, my artist alley booth, and food expenses.

How I save money for cons...
I've put a little less then half my paycheck every month into my savings account. I put half of my birthday money into there as well. I've been doing this since I was 12 (the birthday money anyways). I now have $6,000 dollars I can use for emergencies and trips. I take about $100 out for each con and it's refilled back up by the next month.

Right now, working for temp services. My first job was last week, but only lasted 1 and a half days thanks to me getting sick in my moms car at lunch time. LOL. Will be working at the lane county fair next month, and hopefully be doing more temp jobs in the meantime. :) Will give me what I need while there, ans then some.  ;D

I'm going to be aiming to reduce my con expenses to $20.  Livin' on a budget, yo! :P

$20 doesn't require saving up, fortunately, it just means 4 days not spent going to Ground Kontrol.

I have no job, but I have financial aide for college. I plan on saving as much of that as possible for Kumoricon.

And if I actually happen to get called back on one of the thousand job apps I've sent out, well then that would just be swell too.

Well I work...and then decide how much money I feel like spending sometimes $500 other times more..depends on my mood.As I don't have to worry fro cosplay since I'm not really into it (never been really) I don't have to spend money on that..as for Hotel room it's really not that expensive so I can easily pay that. So in the end I never worry much for money when K-con comes around which is good.

I might be a bit late to this forum but, I have a job with direct deposit.  So whenever I feel that I'm spending too much money, I have my mom hold on to my debit card.

I keep telling Steven to do this.  He never does. :/

I'm totally a professional musician now (http://www.myspace.com/lordofwargodofrock) so that's how I'm saving up. :D (in truth, I'm going to be trying to aim to put at least 50% of my earnings towards next year's housing)

You know... O.o
I just save money I find around, and for chirstmas and my birthday all I ask for is money for Kumoricon. Somehow I end up being able to afford it every year, may be the reason I havent bought any new manga in a couple years, lol.
