Title: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: Sayda on December 25, 2008, 07:42:41 pm
Have any of you heard of it? It comes out January 20th, I think. It was a limited release, and didn't get much advertisement. The story looks really unique, though, and the characters and music is really addicting!

Graverobber is a man, but other then him, it stars Paris Hilton, who does a very nice job, surprisingly, as well as Alexa Vega, who starred in Spy Kids. I hear it also stars quite a bit of other famous musicians.

My personal favorite song is Zydrate Anatomy : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otdH3SLNx-s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otdH3SLNx-s)

Here's the trailer! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xETgGym8cnE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xETgGym8cnE)

AGH I love this movie so much! <3 T_T I don't care if it has paris hilton in it. It's so amazing.

I know! I didn't mind that Paris Hilton starred in this or not, if her acting was good then I don't mind. I don't have much of a problem with her to begin with.

It's brilliant! I saw it back when Darren and Terrance (Graverobber) came through with it on the Repo! Road Tour, and it is phenomenal! I agree, Paris is in the film and is perfect as Amber Sweet and really brought me to rethink my view of her. After hearing from Darren Lynn Bousman how genuinely nice, professional and easy to work with she was, I really am going to push myself to think past the image of her that the paparazzi and news stories propagate.

Also starring is Anthony Head (known for Buffy fame) as the Repo Man. He does a fantastic job of playing such a tormented figure as that. Also in the film are Ogre of Skinny Puppy and Sarah Brightman (as my favorite character (only tied with Grave Robber) Blind Mag). Her voice is simply angelic. Amazing movie and amazing soundtrack.

You are right, Sayday, it comes out January 20th and (keep fingers crossed) there are approximately 60 songs in total, so let's hope for a full soundtrack to be released as well!

For fans of Rocky Horror, Horror, Goth Subculture, Gore, Dark Comedy or Opera, check out this film! And the soundtrack!

My sister got the soundtrack for Christmas yesterday. One of my other favorites that I didn't hear online is Needle in a Bug, sung between Shiloh, and Graverobber. It's short, but for some reason I find it kind of erotic. :0

Good news for you, that song is actually in a deleted scene that will be on the DVD release. Yeah, I really dig that song too. Can't wait to see it.

And I think I have to say my favorite songs are "Chromaggia", "21st Century Cure", "Zydrate Anatomy", and "Legal Assassin". The whole soundtrack is just unskippable. It is impossible to skip a track. I can't. Every song is amazing.

Yeah, that would be fantastic.

And I just learned that they are planning to release an extended version of the soundtrack with the dvd next month. So, yeah, sweet, haha.

I want to buy it. My sister got it for Christmas, but that doesn't mean I can't buy it, too. I'm moving out soon, anyway. And I'll need my own copy!

any thing that comes out for this movie,cd's, dvd's, merch, I'm getting it. it's just so brilliantly cool! <3 maybe I'll ask for it for my birthday.

@sayda
do you mean it will be sung live by the actual actors or maybe by some people that have been practicing for the awards if that happens?
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: EveofAbyss on December 27, 2008, 12:40:33 pm
No, the actual cast. Darren Lynn Dousman (the director/producer) said in an interview that if any of the songs win the cast themselves will perform them.

It comes out on DVD January 20th. It came out in theaters November 7th in a select few cities across the country (and Portland was the first one to show it, yeah!)

I plan to have a Repo! screening at my (or Kahlan's) place when it comes out, so you should definitely come check it out with us, Urahara! And anyone else is welcome too.

just went to go see the spirit today and I wasn't really paying attention because I was trying to find where my boyfriend was seated but they were playing a preview and I swear it said something about Repo! the genetic opera coming to Portland live. 0_0 I wish I would've just stopped and watched.
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: EveofAbyss on December 29, 2008, 05:12:46 pm
Hmm, it may have been referring to the Repo! Road Tour, which was pretty much advertised the same way. Saying Repo! coming to Portland live and whatnot. If that is what it was mentioning, then that happened back in November, but there is a great chance of it playing again at the Clinton St. Theater. They have been playing it a lot since it opened in November.

Although, if it did mean the stage show is coming through, then that is something else entirely. And much to be drooled over, for sure.

My sister's friend's... uncle? I don't know. He pirates DVD's for a living, and he's pirating Repo! for her. I don't have much against pirated DVD's, other then the fact that they don't come with any of the special features. But I'll probably watch it if and when she gets it. :-O
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: EveofAbyss on December 30, 2008, 02:06:38 pm
I usually only agree with pirating if the person plans to buy the film, cd, whatever at some point. This is just me, but with something like Repo! where the cast and crew had to go to such extreme lengths to get the film out to the public, I in no way could condone pirating it. They put so much effort into the movie, money out of their own pockets to get it made, I just have to buy it and support them.

But that is just my view on the subject.
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: Sayda on December 30, 2008, 02:17:05 pm
Well it's not my movie. But like I said I'd rather buy it and get all the cool features then just have the film and nothing else. I'm gonna buy it when I have the money, definitely!
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: nikkiolie on December 30, 2008, 02:32:01 pm
If I do pirate movies I tend to buy them. I usually pirate them because I can't wait to see them again. Take Dark Knight for example. I saw it in theater three or four times. I pirated it again just because I wanted to watch it one more time and I also go it for Christmas. :P
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: EveofAbyss on December 30, 2008, 04:26:09 pm
Yeah, of course. I didn't mean to come off in a condescending tone or anything. Hopefully I didn't. I did the same thing with Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. That movie's US release was delayed multiple times but that doesn't mean the fansubs weren't up. So I downloaded that and enjoyed it for about four months before it was actually released, at which time I picked it up in no time.

So yeah, there are many exceptions, I just meant in this specific situation, with Repo! I am going to be sure to buy a copy.

Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: EveofAbyss on January 01, 2009, 09:17:43 pm
There were quite a few cosplayers at the Repo! Road Tour stop. I actually am considering doing a Repo-man cosplay at some point, either him or Rotti Largo, lol. But definitely someone from Repo! I'd want to do Grave-Robber because I like his voice the best (for a male character, tied with Nathan Wallace/Repo-man), but I couldn't pull it off. So, I'll plan for Reeeeeeeeeeeeepoooo-maaaaaaan. ^_^

Really? That's awesome. I have yet to see the movie, so I guess until I do I'm going to be undecided as to who I would consider cosplaying.

Post by: EveofAbyss on January 01, 2009, 10:00:04 pm
If you end up doing that, we will have to do a duet at some point, ^_^ "I Never Knew I'd Love You So Much" perhaps, lol.
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: Sayda on January 01, 2009, 10:01:22 pm
Okay! I'd totally be down with doing that. I love doing duet's from musicals. My sister and I do them all the time with Rent, and now Repo!
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: EveofAbyss on January 01, 2009, 10:03:12 pm
haha, yay! I like duets too, just seldom get the chance to do them (until Kahlan gets the soundtrack and memorizes it anyway, heh).

Yeah, I think by the time Kumoricon rolls around, or just some random Summer hang out, there should be plenty of Repo! hype and experience to get everyone involved.

I'm a big fan of Giles (and of course heard him sing in "Once More, With Feeling", and will see it for him.
But perhaps I'm the only one on the forums whose actually seen Ogre perform with Skinny Puppy live? (with Severed Heads).

OMG Just watched a bunch on youtube. Mesmerized by Chase the Morning! WTF with the eye thing? (anyone who wants to protect others from spoilers but fill me in is encouraged to PM me!)
                            Edit:    *thanks to EveofAbyss!*
Wow I would go see it based on that scene even without Giles. Though originally I'd considered avoiding it because though I love goth I am repulsed by gore (and Saw). The (drug name) Anatomy scene was pretty cool too, and the At the Opera Tonight trailer (but ewww blood). Love the costumes, actually have things like some of them from, well, a non-anime part of my dress-up life :)
Edit: Wow I'm already starting to dream in this universe so I consider myself hooked before even seeing the movie! Now what's up with the roadshow?
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.

I was hooked as well, even before I saw the movie. I watched it a few nights ago with some friends, and today I exchanged my extra copy of the Dark Knight for Repo!. I'm really excited to watch it again, this time without having to worry about the loading situation. It was cheap, too! Only 14.99$.

Maybe we can sing together sometime too. XD I know Chase the Morning, Mark It Up, Didn't Know I Loved You So Much, Let the Monster Rise, and Needle Through a Bug. Those are most of the duets, I think. :O

Yeah! I'm still not sure who I'd wanna Cosplay. Blind Mag was pretty amazing, although I'm not sure I can pull her off. I was thinking my friend Erin could definitely pull her off better then I could. But she's so cool! Although I suppose I wouldn't mind being Shilo still.
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.

when rodney gets his repo cosplay together,  i want to try to do blind mag. hopefully i could pull it off... i think i'd want to try to do the feathery outfit she wears at the end, but then the one she wears when she visits shilo is cool, i love the hood ^.^ but the feather one was great, the eyelashes were epic and it would be fun to maybe modify it and have blood running from my eyes o.O
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: Sayda on January 21, 2009, 11:35:13 am
I really like Mag's outfits. I think my favorite one though was when Shilo first met Mag, and her hair was all done up. That or, I guess I just liked her makeup and hair. XD

But that would be really cool! The bloody eyes thing would also be very neat.

Yay, I get to watch it tomorrow! I was going to try and go to it at the Theater, but I didn't know it was sold out until it was too late. Oh well.. I have heard the soundtrack and it is pretty chill.

Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.

Yup yup, I concur. The soundtrack is in constant rotation on my ipod (or is that just constant play-button?). I just love it love it love it.

So, what is everyone's favorite song? Favorite character?

I can't even begin to pick a favorite song (so maybe that was a bad question to ask, lol), but if I had to pick I'm torn between "21st Century Cure", "Chromaggia", "Chase the Morning", "Legal Assassin", or "Night Surgeon".

Characters, I'm torn between Blind Mag, Nathan Wallace, Luigi and Pavi. I can't choose!
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: RemSaverem on January 21, 2009, 03:54:59 pm
The two that ring in my head even when I'm trying to sleep are Chase the Morning and Zydrate Anatomy.
What I've literally dreamed of cosplaying is the vision of Marni that pops out of Blind Mags "eyes" and sings in Chase the Morning. Is there any screen shot that shows what she's wearing or looks like? Or is there any image of her other than that in the film? (I *will* find a way to view it!)
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: Sayda on January 21, 2009, 04:22:51 pm
I'm really not sure what my favorite song is. So many of them get stuck in my head! But I really like We Started This Op'ra ****. I really like Chase the Morning, too. And Legal Assassin, Things You See in the Graveyard, and pretty much all of them. DX Besides Seventeen. Haha, I don't like that song, and I didn't like that part in the movie.

As for characters I'm really not sure. I liked Mag a lot, and Rotti, too. But I also really liked Nathan and Graverobber.

I'm just really looking forward to the extended soundtrack's release because there are a lot of other songs I love that are in the film but not on the first release of the soundtrack.

Oh, and Kahlan totally agrees with you about "Seventeen", Sayda, haha.

So turns out it's playing in Eugene at the David Minor Theater. I sent the aol video of Chase the Morning to my partner hoping this will get him to come with me. Otherwise I'll probably still be looking to rent the vid (or borrow) or find it whole online. Anyone find it whole online anywhere?

Errrr....I luff Pavi =D And my mom absolutaly loves this movie but she likes Graverobber and fears my beloved Pavi. xD
Ahh and I cheated and watched it a week before it came out on DVD >w> Memorised all the songs...but the ending part type were nathan/ repo man were, yeah. I cryed a few times. o.o;

I watched it a while ago online Rem. http://www.watch-movies.net/movies/repo_the_genetic_opera/ (http://www.watch-movies.net/movies/repo_the_genetic_opera/) The best link to choose is the Mega Video one. It'll play the entire thing, and it loads fast. The only downside to it is that after about halfway through the movie it will pause and tell you to sign up to finish watching, or wait about an hour before you're able to watch the rest of it. The DiVex one only worked about 40 minutes into the movie, then stopped.

@Kinky: Haha, I'm pretty sure if I showed my gramma this movie she'd just raise a brow.

Got my boyfriend to download it by sending him "Chase the Morning" but when he saw the first few minutes of non-graphic-novel gore he turned it off.

Your boyfriend seems a little stuck up about this. I think he should get over it and just watch it, instead of judging the movie based off the first five minutes. But then again there were a lot of people who didn't enjoy the film. Although they didn't judge it within the first couple minutes. They sat through it, then stated their opinions. :0

Regardless though, it shouldn't matter what your boyfriend thinks. If you're interested and you want to watch it, then you should! With or without him.

Make-up looks good! So you thinking of cosplaying Mag and Shilo, or just Mag now? Well, cool either way.

And just an update, Expanded Repo! Soundtrack should come out in mere hours. \/\/00+

I love the dress she's in when she comes to Nathan and Shilo's house. Because I would wear it all the time in real life cosplay or not, I will try to see if I can find any material like it anywhere.

I would consider the Chromaggia (I have many corsets, including a steel-boned one), but, am allergic to feathers (though there might be fake ones I could find).

I still am going to try to see if I can find screenshots so I can study what Marni wears in various flashbacks, holograms, photos, and graphic novel posts.

If there were someone my size into doing it it would be fun to be Rotti's matching body guards.

I probably have stuff laying around that resembles the genterns that look like nurses.

I had a dream that I worked out a way to attach something to my glasses that looked like the Marni holograms coming out of Mag's "eyes".

Oh yeah about 3 hours of half-awake film-universe dreams followed watching the DVD (alone) last night.

Are there Easter Eggs on it anywhere? I've already seen the "extras" on youtube....If there are please share how to find them, as I have to return the DVD tonight!

Oh and if I thought I could handle pasty white makeup on my face all day I'd want to crossplay graverobber. I suppose it's kinda spooky that I find both him and mag kinda hot
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.

I'm not sure if there are or not. I haven't been paying too much attention to detail yet on costumes and such. Mostly makeup, hair, and those eyes! FXEyes was the site that made the eyes for the movie, and while they're a little pricey, I'd totally be willing to pay for them!

The body guards would be really awesome to Cosplay, my friend Steven really wants to Cosplay as them. But no one's as tall as that kid is, or as thin. He said though, that if I really went through with Mag, that he'd Cosplay Mag's body guard for me, which is exciting!

Graverobber and Mag ARE hot. Haaah. At least I think so. My sister and my two friends concure on that part, so don't worry, you're not alone. :0

I could see having 3 different costumes for 3 different days, all from this. Except that I also want to do at least something from Firefly and/or Serenity sometime....And I think I'm going to have to give in and get the soundtrack and/or the DVD as I can't get it out of my head.

That would be really intense. And probably expensive. XD Oh man, Firefly's really good. Who are you Cosplaying from it?

I think you are the third person who has said they can't get the music out of their head. It really is addicting. The extended soundtrack came out yesterday, which I still need to get. But the DVD is pretty cheap. At Fred Meyer it was only 15$.

Actually the Extended Soundtrack did not come out yesterday. It was supposed to, but didn't for some reason. There's a chat with Darren Bousman (director) today so we'll see what is going on.

Oh, and no there are no easter eggs on the DVD. Everything is pretty stripped down as far as features and things go. There are many more things on the Blu-Ray than on the DVD. On the Blu-Ray there are deleted scenes, and sing-a-longs to a couple songs, "Legal Assassin" being one of them. I don't know where they are online, though.

Really? That sucks! I was gonna ask for it for my birthday. ~ ~ On another note though Rodney, they have a Repo! shirt at Hot Topic! You and I both seem to like getting shirts from things we like, so I thought I'd let you know. :0

I don't understand why they only put the special features on Blu-Ray. To make more profit? Not a whole lot of people own a Blu-Ray player, or can afford it or its disks. Before Youtube took it down though, I saw the deleted scene of Needle Through A Bug, which was cool. I wish the DVD had more to offer.
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: EveofAbyss on January 28, 2009, 03:51:01 pm
Well, you may be in luck, Marie. I just got back from the chat with Darren and Terrance, and they said that the extended soundtrack was delayed, but for good reason! It was actually demanded by more and more stores, so they had to keep printing more before they could ship them. So, they plan to have the extended soundtrack out by around Valentine's Day. And it will have around 40 tracks! Woo!

And yeah, I just went to Hot Topic yesterday and saw they had the barcode Repo! shirt, which I would have picked up in a heartbeat but they didn't have my size. Still, really awesome. I'm also hoping to see the Blind Mag shirt in store at some point. Mmmm....^_^

Blu-Ray is weird. I don't have it, don't know many people who do, but that is the new wave of technology, so I guess they are jumping on board.

Also, just a little note, and this is very important. Darren and Terrance REALLY REALLY want to make a sequel to Repo! In order to do that, though, they need to prove to the world that Repo! has a following...with money! lol So, in a week about 40% of the DVD's have been sold. That's huge! But here's the thing: the rest of them need to be bought up too. So if you haven't bought a copy of Repo! yet, try your best to get one. We are the people who will make the difference. The fan base is not massive, not enough for only a few people to buy and support the movie. We all need to. Let's get the sequel made!

Also, I will be working to coordinate another theater screening of Repo! soon, and maybe by then we can all come out, support and show off our cosplays! ^_^ Anyway, more news on that later.
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: Sayda on January 28, 2009, 04:10:00 pm
Whoa really? That's awesome! I'm happy to see stores and the public are recognizing them. I'm totally going to get the extended version once it's out. Then there'll be even more songs to practice and sing.

I would have bought it, too. But I have no money. So I told Steven I wanted it for my birthday. Haah. They're coming out with a Blind Mag shirt? I think by now she's my favorite character, so I will definitely keep my eye out for that.

I have heard that they want to make Repo! a trilogy, which would make a lot of people happy. I hope that they get well known enough to continue making the films!

If it gets back into theaters around here, let me know! I really wanted to see it on the big screen. It would be really cool if everyone ended up dressing up for the event, too.

Courtesy of our dear Eve I successfully friended Sarah Brightman--oh and she's touring in Asia, if any KC forum members are in Japan or thereabouts--folks can arrange to go backstage to hang out with her afterwards--OMG I totally (after going to sleep after reading that last night) dreamt I was there backstage w/her in, of all places, Malaysia. Okay so I watched on youtube an interview of Terrance Zdunich. He said  that there are some major differences from the stage to the screen, in part because with stage, you want to have some stand-alone, solo performances that give the audience a chance to pause and clap; but in a movie, those would stop the churning momentum, so they're omitted, even though some of them are some of Terrance's personal favorites.
That, of course, leads me jonesing to see the play (and hoping they make another road show).
Well I joined a Repo forum, and lo and behold someone had posted what they say is the 1st act of the play (not the road show of the movie, but its predecessor). I of course have no way to authenticate it, but heck yah I'm about to read it. Thought first though I'd share it with y'all (our little Zydrate Support Network):

^ That's interesting. Sounds like it is the script of the stage play. I know the very first incarnation of Repo! was a 10-minute play Terrance Zdunich and Darren Smith created called "The Necromerchant's Debt". It featured only about three songs, two of which were brought to the modern film version of Repo! So, it is interesting to see the stage play and how it has changed and how the movie changed from that.

And I would die to see Sarah Brightman in concert. She should come here, to the Arlene Schnitzer.

That is interesting! I knew of the 10 minute play, and I knew that the play and the movie itself were different. I'd really like to see the Road Show sometime.

I watched the movie again today with my girlfriend, and it was still just as good. I might watch it again tonight with my mother if she feels up to it. I also went clubbing last night for my birthday, and my makeup was complimented a lot, which is really exciting! I've also been talking to someone on the Repo! forums about Mag's eyes. And they've been talking to the people at FXEyes about it. They said that they'll send me pictures once they arrive. So even though I'm not the one receiving them, I'm still excited. XD

If I still knew how to play clarinet and/or piano as well as I used to, it would be worth it to me to get the sheet music! Presently employed only 1/2 time, I'll have to look at the cost involved before committing.

Yeah, I definitely am looking forward to the Members Only section; the sheet music has my interest piqued. I can't read music, but with its release, chords can't be too far behind. I am already working on my cover of "Chromaggia", just catching notes by ear, but it will still be really nice to have the official notes for it and the other songs.

Ah, well I'm doing a metal cover, so I won't actually be hitting the notes that Sarah Brightman does, lol. I'll be doing metal vocals instead.

And there were a couple videos available on the Blu-Ray release of Repo! that were in sing-along version (I think that's the karaoke version you saw on yourtube), so at the moment I don't think there are more than a couple songs out there, but there may be more in the future.

Ohh wow. Yeah man! When you finish your version I definitely want to hear it!

Maan.. I think my favorite song is Everyone's a Composer. I love it! I can't get it out of my head and I keep replaying it. Anyone know if there's a download for it anywhere? Or do we have to wait for the extended soundtrack to come out?

Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: RemSaverem on February 05, 2009, 04:26:46 pm
Yes I love Giles. Though seeing him as Frank N Furter (and Amber Benson from Buffy as Janet) was a little wierd! I still was glad to see it though Anthony Stewart Head is more a handsome type than a pretty type. Having read in magazines for people living with HIV (I work for a doctor who specializes in HIV patients) that Amber speaks publicly about being a virgin (and not in the never-saw-Rocky way), it was amusing to see her sing "Touch-a Touch-a Touch-a Touch Me". But we all knew they could sing from Once More with Feeling! :D

As for the blue-ray singalong--
One heart--Mark It Up!

As for "Everyone's a Composer"--never heard that. Deleted scene? I'm also certainly curious about "Needle from a Bug", wierd title....

Now I've been reading some fanfic on LJ--Is there any hinting anywhere in any canon that leads to all the femslash that's developing around Marni/Mag? Also, is there anything anywhere that identifies the mother of Luigi, Pavi, and Amber? Any possibility of Marni???

I'll be sure to get it to you when I'm done. ^_^

And yeah, "Everyone's A Composer" is just fantastic, so climactic and emotional.

It's pretty awesome, that song is Darren Bousman's favorite song, so there is more than a great chance that it will be on the extended soundtrack, when that comes out.

In the meantime, though, I can rip it from the DVD and get it to you. As long as you don't post it anywhere or pay me for it, lol.

"Everyone's A Composer" is a song included in the film. It is the scene right after "Chase the Morning", when Nathan comes home and finds Mag there. It is the song sung between Nathan, Mag, and Shilo.

As for "Needle Through A Bug", that is from a deleted scene, which is available on Blu-Ray and various spots on the internet. There is a whole subplot that was axed from the film, which I won't go into here, but that deleted scene and the song "Needle Through A Bug" really bring up some heavy elements in that deleted subplot. Things involving Marni and...yeah, I'll stop there, lol. If you're really curious, PM me about it.

And I don't read any fanfics so I don't know what is being imagined out there, especially involving Marni and Mag. Umm, they were best friends, Mag is Shilo's godmother. Anything else they write about is merely the creative license of the author.

And as for the mother of the Largo children, I am pretty sure it is not Marni. It does not signify who their mother(s) are, but they are all far too old for Marni to have been their parent. Luigi is in his thirties and Marni was the same age as Nathan if not younger (mid 40's) when she died. There is speculation about the Repo! forums, but I think that each of the Largo children probably has a different mother. Rotti wanted an heir more than anything else, and he had the money to make that happen, like a king of old, with several different women being surrogates of sorts.

Ohh really? That'd be awesome if you could! Can you exchange it through messenger or do we need to meetup to exchange it through a CD? :0

Also, I wanna know the subplot! I knew they cut out a huge chunk of the film involving something else, but I wasn't sure what it was. So you should PM me about it.

Ohhh man. Marni and Mag... that just isn't right. Sometimes people need to just calm down, and keep it to themselves, goodness. XD

I love Muppets.
Maybe Bimbo was some kind of Freudian slip given that Pavi is "the panty snatching" lol!
BTW OMG
I had not originally known Luigi was played by the guy who was Otis in Rob Zombie's nightmarish movies! I only saw the 1st one (my coworker showed it to my clients at work) oy vey he was quite effectively chilling, creepy, sadistic.
Yes please PM me re the Needle from a Bug subplot.
Okay I just didn't know it was called that, will need to watch that part again.
That is when Shilo is pleading with Nathan to save Mag and he's trying to get her to go back to her room and forget everything?
Yeah all different moms would make sense. In the play Pavi and Luigi and Rotti were brothers and Amber was Luigi's daughter, if I recall  correctly.
There was one *great* fanfic I read that was about what each of Rotti's kids were like in childhood and how they at young ages showed indications of how they'd be as adults.

Yeah, Bill Moseley (Luigi) is an amazing actor. You should see The Devil's Rejects, the sequel to House of 1,000 Corpses. If you thought he was scary in the first one, see the second. Truly terrifying.

I'll get that "Needle Through A Bug" description to you soon here.

And yeah, the part when Shilo is pleading with Nathan to save Mag is the part I was talking about.

Honestly I don't know if I could handle the sequel, Eve. I tend to immerse in things I watch or read, and imagine myself in their universes (hence how I'm drawn to fanfic and cosplay). That's one universe I have no desire to revisit......I want to be able to sleep soundly!

I did, however, read vivid descriptions of all the Saw movies in homage to Repo's codirector, and was surprised to want to know how things would end. Of course that's different than being able to stomach watching the nasty deaths. Not something I could handle. Even watching nature documentaries I turn my head when predators eat raw prey.

Has anyone followed the filk and gotten the Extended Soundtrack? What other goodies await us?

Any word on the 2nd film (which I've read will be a prequel and not a sequel)?

BTW Sarah Brightman fans--I ordered for myself, my dad's bday, and my best friend's bday, her "Andrew Lloyd Weber Collection" cd. The best tracks on it are Phantom of the Opera, Another Suitcase in Another Hall (which is from Evita), and Macavity the Mystery Cat. I'm open to making copies for folks who want them (given that I paid for 3 copies). I will probably be at the March GM if anyone wants to give me blank CDs then. Potentially I could have my (or anyone's) comp at the meeting and just do the deed there.

I have stopped following Repo! news because I have come to the conclusion that it is a pointless effort. Last I checked (a couple days ago) the Extended Soundtrack is still not out. It was supposed to be in stores on Tuesday and....surprise, surprise, it wasn't.

Nobody knows what's going on, not even the creators and promoters of the film and soundtrack.

Everything is in Limbo.

But yeah, I know nothing about it.

So Kahlan got me the Extended Soundtrack, woo! We kept checking at Hot Topic, and we finally found a copy.

It's good. There are a lot of new tracks, only a couple tracks that weren't in the movie, but there are a lot new to the soundtrack. Good stuff!

And it was super cheap, the same price as the original soundtrack, oddly enough. Only 11.99 or so.
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: Sayda on February 27, 2009, 09:08:50 am
Wow that cheap? That's almost nothing! I was expecting 20$ or so. But I guess I don't really spend money on CD's, I base all my prices off of movies which are generally 20$.

I'm definitely going to pick it up now! Haha, maybe I'll search for it today before we leave so we'll have something to listen to on our way up to Seattle.

for some reason the rest of it was a little un-interesting, I can't imagine why. I always like these types of movies [minus the...well...sexual tension I guess is how to say it. didn't like the dancing or VERY OBVOIUS moment with Pavi and the the two Genterns]

So I rented it and watched it twice. It was amazing the first time but the second time watching it, I thought the music was just...alright. :/
I think the story and movie is still fricking sweet, but music wise...eh just not doing it for me, imho.
I love the characters though! Luigi's probably my most favorite. "I WILL SHOOT YOU IN THE FACE!!" And Paris Hilton was excellent as Amber Sweet.  ;D I will love anyone who does an awesome cosplay of Pavi.
Alexa Vega...she looked the part as Shilo but did she sing the part, no I just felt like her style of singing didn't fit.
These are all just my opinions. I'm very open to music but I do get picky with what I like.

The first few times I watched it I had the same perspective as you about Alexa Vega, but her voice grew on me. Particularly in the finale, "I Didn't Know I'd Love You So Much" and "Genetic Emancipation". Of course, this is just my view of it. The music definitely works for me, though. It has that amazing hybrid of gothic rock and industrial metal, and classical opera all mixed together. I love all those genres by themselves, so having them mixed like they appear in the film, it just rocks my socks off. "21st Century Cure"....I love it!

"And it's my job
To steal...and rob...
GRAAAAAAVES!"

Love it, love it, love it, heh

I'm finally going to go see this in a week an a half.  At the Clinton Street Theater no less! (we're going to Rocky on Saturday, then Repo the following Friday)  For those unfamiliar with the Clinton, it's SE Portland theatre that claims to have been showing Rocky Horror longer than any other in the world; almost every Saturday at Midnight since April 1978!

Yup, that theater is great for cult film gatherings like this one. That is where I first saw Repo! when it came through on the Repo! Road Tour last Fall. I can only think of one other theater that would be as good or better for a cultie Repo! screening, and that's the Hollywood Theater.

Have fun, Tofu!

For those interested, you can actually watch this with a live shadowcast (and AP lines) at the Clinton Street Theater in Portland. It's $8, but if you're watching specifically for the movie itself, it may not be too worth it, but it's still pretty cool. Shows on Friday at midnight.

That's cool. Shadowcasts really aren't my cup o' tea, but for those that do like it, it's nice that it's offered. I just personally don't think the movie can be improved by doing what a shadowcast does, but still, fun is fun, lol

The shadowcast isn't the main concern in my opinion, it's the AP lines. You'll know what I'm talking about if you've gone to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. X_O (Same place, Saturdays)

haha, I was just kidding but that's awesome. I want to find out what I am vocal skill-wise. I have no idea how to find out something like that. Probably a bass (that's a term, right?).

Anyway, Repo! I'm really getting into Repo! again since it is getting closer to Fall and Halloween. This time last year I was listening to Repo! nonstop, heh.
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.

After you said that, you had me in my computer room, attempting to figure out if I could get my voice any lower! xD
And yeah, a bass is the lower voices, for men. Tenor, being the higher voices, for men. Alto being the lower voices, for women. And soprano, being the higher voices, for women. Hence why I didn't take Blind Mag, since I could never sing as high as Sarah Brightman...>.o;;

This time last year, I had only heard a little about Repo!, because of a friend in New York. Now I obsess over it, more then most people should...>>

You're welcome. I usually can't explain stuff well, unless I really care for it. Singing is something I care for, even though the choir at my high school is no fun.
I shall try my best to get the lowest note GraveRobber can do, down pat, but if I can't... Deal...>>

Nathan's pretty cool. And his actor's pretty cool, too. I just wouldn't want to do his singing, since the harsh tone he does for Repo Man, would totally kill my throat! >.o;;

M'hm. Plus, there's a big difference between me and Mr. GraveRobber.
Me = Female. He = Male. :3

That works out in your favor, then! I think, from the time I heard you talking at the early meet-up, your voice would be pretty awesome for Nathan/Repo Man.

It's hard for me to get my people up and across the bridge to Clinton Street but if my plans for October work out I may be able to get to a show.

Can someone tell me which weekends they do Rocky and when they do Repo!, I can't get the site to load at work. :3

Oh, also, I was sad that I only saw one Gentern at con, I was expecting more Repo! cosplayers.

If we were doing parts then I'd have to be Luigi or Rotti. They're lots of fun. As much as I'd love it, I'm not skinny enough for Pavi.

Okay, I don't mean to sound opinionated, but aren't the songs from Repo a little repetitive or is it just me?

I've been starting to notice that... and it kind of bothers me.
Title: Re: Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Post by: Cyprus on September 25, 2009, 08:39:18 am
What you have to keep in mind is that it's not actually a musical per-say...its a rock opera. With that being said, there will be some repetition/similarity in the songs as they are a means to tell the story rather than voice acting, which there is little of that in the movie.  But honestly...I watch it all the time & I don't really see the repetition.

I will have to go see this at the Clinton...never got the chance to see a theater showing of this...just bought the DVD and fell in love!

I watched this movie last night. I wasn't too impressed with it.

OH MY GOD THE MUSIC. About half of the people in the movie had the worst voices ever. Ok, I'm over exaggerating but the main girl in the movie sounded like a shrill rat. She couldn't carry a god damn tune and errrrrgh. I thought most of the songs were poorly written minus the Graverobber and the two songs that I remember the Repoman singing in. Still I WANT TO STRANGLE THAT GOD DAMN CHILD FOR MAKING MY EARS BLEED D:<

I thought the art direction of the movie was amazing though. It was gorgeous and made the movie enjoyable to watch. I love seeing films with an interesting overtone such as this. The story was meh. There were times when I became bored with it, but it was enough to get me through the movie. Plus Anthony Stewart Head is <3 and made it worth watching least once.

Yeah, good one time, never again, etc, etc. I like musicals/opera's a lot but I really didn't like this.

I think most people were annoyed with her voice. I enjoy mocking her every once in a while.

But for the story, there was a ton cut out of it. There's a lot of gaps in it, I know that Eve explains the story holes very nicely. :D

Yeah I can agree Alexa Vega isn't the best person for a singing role. She should just stick to the kids movies.

I liked the movie in some parts but the one that tempted me never to see it again was the whole "17" bit with Alexa Vega. Not only is she horrible with singing but I thought that the song didn't have any thing to do with the movie and it annoyed the crap out of me.

Okay, so I saw the movie a week or two ago.  At first I didn't like it because it was a little hard getting into the setting, and the songs were blah.  As the movie went on and I knew who all the characters were and what their role was it got a lot better.  By the end of the movie I would say I liked it, with one exception, the songs.  Ya I know it was a musical, no need to tell me again and again about that, but I think about half the songs I didn't like the lyrics.  They didn't seem to flow right or make much sence, but I know it is hard to make a whole musical movie and get everything sounding perfect.  The other half of the songs I did enjoy and thought they went well with the scene they were put into.

My favorite part of the movie as a whole were the costumes, everything in the movie about the clothing was awesome.  This is what made the movie for me.  As for my favorite character, the graverobber was my favorite and I think he was some of the best parts.  Even though he had the smallest part of the whole movie, except maybe on par with the two sons and daughter of GeneCo's owner Rotti, everything about the character fit and was done well.  Be it his singing or his grave yard skulk, any part I didn't like was made up for by this one character.

Everyone should! He made sure that he had all the best parts because he's the creator. The actor and the character were around from the very start, when the show was just a three song theme set in a concert.

Check out the dvd special features some time, the story of how the movie came to be is fascinating.

The good news is that we're going to be showing REPO! The Genetic Opera at M.E.W. Con, possibly with a trained shadowcast performing. (I'll announce more once I have news on this second part)

The bad news is that we have to make it 18+ because of the R rating. :<

Repo is rated R for strong bloody violence and gore, language, some drug and sexual content.

YEah, and they had to tone it down a lot to get that rating. See the studio was pushing for PG-13 so things aren't nearly as hard core as they wanted, but they still ended up being R rated. The director complains about it quite a bit in his commentary.

Oooh that's exciting! I'm not buying a badge for Mew con, though. XD; It sucked too much last year for me to spend money on it again this year. I might just end up showing up for the day and hanging out in the lobby. o w o But you'll have to let us know how the whole shadow cast thing went!

Repo is rated R for strong bloody violence and gore, language, some drug and sexual content.

^Straight from the back of the movie case!^

Ah no wonder, because all of that is in PG-13 now a days, guess they just didn't bribe the rating office hard enough like all the big name movies...
