Title: Y'ALL WANT BJDS?
Post by: scream aim fire on September 11, 2008, 04:56:20 pm
yea, yea, yea
it's only been two weeks since the con.

BUT I NEED OPINIONS NOW.
of whether or not people would be interested in buying 1/6 scale ball jointed dolls made out of sculpey.
it sounds weird, yea. but y'all know how good i am. i promise they won't be disappointing.
the only thing is that sculpting at a larger scale is going to take a LOT of time and practice on my part.
which is why i really need to decide whether or not i'm doing this in the next few weeks.

i'd still be predominately selling my normal sculptures.
BJDs. . . there would be maybe 10 at the most.
possibly maybe costing around $100 each. since eyes and hair alone cost me $30 per doll.

also note,
you won't be able to change the hair or eyes.
unless i magically find time to learn how to cast in resin this next year. which i doubt i will. : /

anndddd for those of you who've never seen my work,
here's my deviantart. c:

the BJDs won't be anything like my sculptures.
but it's proof i'm a semi-competent sculptor?

oooooh I've always wanted a bjd! I like this idea a lot. this would be awesome to buy. :3 I don't really care about not changing the eyes or hair but I'd like to know would the hair be like a wig(realistic) or sculpey?

they would have actual wigs.

most likely,
eye colors would be set,
but you'd be able to choose a wig when you buy it,
and i would style it/attach it there at the convention.

wonderful! :D could you give them elf ears or other odd characteristics? just wondering. it would take a bit of practice I know.

uhhh i'm not sure what you mean by other characteristics,
but i suppose elf ears are a possibility.

though,
i doubt i'll be branching out much with their aesthetic qualities,
just because it'll be my first time selling them (if i do this at all),
and i kinda wanna play it safe.

Sculpey doesn't seem like it would be structurally sound enough for a BJD, since the joints are generally strung together inside hollow body parts.

This is a tough thing you want to do!

well,
i've made BJDs out of sculpey before.
they're strong enough, i suppose.
like, they'll break if you drop them onto a hard surface,
but so long as you're careful they'll be fine.

: )

I don't mean to be rude, just boldly honest. I hope this doesn't come off negative but helpfully objective.

I wouldn't really want to buy a Sculpey BJD for $100+ when I could get a resin one in the same size (Or tinies which are smaller) for around the same price with changeable eyes, hair and so on. I'd enjoy seeing your progress though and be curious about what you'd make, but I personally would be too afraid of the sculpey cracking, breaking, chipping, or warping. It's not a very stable material, especially if strung with something that'd rub against the clay and wear away at the surface inside. But I think it'd be a fun thing to offer at conventions... however to the average con goer $100 is a lot to drop into something that's 1/6 size.  (Not that I wouldn't, I own plenty BJD as it is, but generally speaking.) The majority of Con-goers won't understand the work that goes into your dolls, and aren't really very Doll-savy in general, so the price would shock them considerably.

How would wig's cost you so much? Are you hand-making/sewing the caps using wig wefts yourself? There are purchasable 1/6 wigs both from Volks and from other Bjd dealers such as Junkyspot as well as Ebay, and the yretail from $5-15 or so per wig. So I'm curious about that.

I just want to throw this out there:
If anyone who creates these items wishes to provide a workshop to teach others how to do so (which, btw, is also a great way to promote oneself as an artisan and get name-recognition con-wide), please PM me, and we can incorporate your workshop alongside our Dolly-Making and Fandom Bears making workshops.
