Title: Things to do at night? (IE: Izakaya Bar and/or karaoke etc....?)
Post by: Raiphin on August 18, 2008, 03:42:30 pm
Hallo! I'm a Seattle resident, but I'm going down to PDX for Kumoricon with a friend kind of in celebration of both our 25th Birthdays....and there's things I know I want to do, but I don't know how where to find them! So I turn to you--

Are there Japanese bar type places? there must be, right? But I don't know where. O_o Both of us speak a fair bit of Japanese, so the more 'authentic' the better, or something.

Are there any Japanese-style karaoke places? Like, where it's you and your friends embaressing each other and yourselves in a private room rather than in front of the drunken public of a bar.

Other than that...what do the anime-loving nerds of PDX do at night?

(its like the 1 oneup our uwajimaya has over the one in seattle:P)

there is also a ramen shop called biwa (just search biwa ramen portland) that has japanese style ramen with the yummiest broth i have ever tasted
they also have grilled things and i got some of the tinyest most tastyest chicken wings i have ever had there (they came in a bowl bigger then my head)

There's a couple of bars near the con space but I don't know of any that are Japanese, or even offer karaoke.

Jaz-- oooh, ramen and yakitori are among my favorite things! O_O

Tom-- heeey, maps are cool! I'd forgotten that one existed!

Anyway, looks like the best bet off the bat is to go for Japanese food and then find a walking distance from the hotel bar. I'm looking around Yelp.com too in case it provides anything worthwhile.

I don't know any of these places as I don't go to bars, but a quick google search gives you:

Thanks!

Yeah, I feel waaaaay more at ease in Japanese bars than normal ones (also, the food is way more exciting and good...) but we'll be ladies out on the town....a floofy girly drink or two would be fun! ^ - ~

Is Bush Gardens downtown still around? It is one of the older Japanese restaurants in town, or was anyway.

azumano travel is near the con, maybe they know a thing or two.

Bush Gardens is still downtown around pioneer square. If you hop on the max on the way not to lloyd center you go right past it.

Bush Gardens is still around, that is about as authentic as you can get.

Random Trivia:  The owner of Bush Gardens was running for mayor of portland against sam adams.
