Title: DS/Wireless handheld hangout?
Post by: kurosakiichigo666 on April 15, 2008, 11:44:13 pm
Will there be a designated spot for DS/wireles gaming stuff like Pictochat and whatnot? I know there was one at Sakuracon and I actually have a DS now. Pictochat at con would be epic...

If there is I hope it is better then the one at Sak. I know the guy who started up the one at Sakuracon and he was sad at the turnout of people at it. Then again it was just some massive place out in the open to sit and I didn't even know it was the wireless hangout until the end of the 2nd day there.

I plan on having some way of making people know that they should bring their wireless gaming systems (including laptops) and having some listings of what people are playing or interested in playing.

what should happen is that someone should set a place and time...

like for at K-con sunday night 10:30 at someplace so that people know where it would be

(and thats just an example)

The gaming room is going to be in one large room.  It'll be easy to set up a corner somewhere for people to play.

well then we should have somebody go and talk to them about that and see what we could do

Title: Re: DS/Wireless handheld hangout?

A thought that's occurred to me is to have a board on one wall of the room where people can put some kind of indication of what games they're interested in playing with others and stuff.  Maybe just a big whiteboard.  The general feeling I had at Sakuracon was that the only way I'd find someone to play Monster Hunter with was if I happened to see someone playing monster hunter and said ZOMG LET'S HUNT MONSTERS TOGETHER!!!!

I kind of want to take the lead as far as game room layout goes this year, so if I do, I'll try to incorporate a lounge suitable for portable gaming (you know, couches and stuff) in the game room.

Also, Slim PSP's can plug in to TV's, so there might be some smallish (20"-30") tv's available for that too.

Suddenly, I arrive! If there isn't an official DS lounge, which is unlikely, I'll bring some chairs and a sign. It sounds like I may be helping staff the game room this year though. If that happens, than my ds will be the ds that pierces the heavens.

Is dat sum DS gaem?

I probably won't be getting a DS any time soon.  I'm going to aim to make about $2000 this summer and it's all going into 8 3" DDR pads w/ 3"d 38"h bars ($600), 2 DTIDX 18" DDR pads w/ 3"d 38"h bars ($320), 2 StepMania cabinets ($500), 6 cheap desktops ($480), 5 cheap TV's ($200), and a decent video/audio capture card ($100).

3"d 38"h bars = 38" high bars that are 3" thick
DTIDX 18" DDR pad = 18" thick deluxe DDR stage with backlit DT100 buttons.

Anything else lol?

Holy crap!! I'm so glad my reception place and premarital counseling is free!! You are spending more on the site then I am on my dress!!! Exclamation points!!! Where are you having the reception/where are you getting the counseling?

Invitations done by hand = Wayyyy cheaper. I'm still tryign to configure all the costs but I spent $25 and got enough cardstock for 200 invitations.

we are going to have the reception at grand lodge, it is a bit pricey but for 100 peeps yeah
also all the money i am spending on that goes to foods, the room has a food budget min of 2600, so i spend that much on all the food for the reception and there is no room rental fee

Okay back on track...so if there was a designated area would it just be a gaming free-for-all or will there actually be a sign with like available games to play? Cos it might be hard to just sit around waiting for the right person to come by and play with you.

OK, what I think may be a good idea would be to maybe have a whiteboard in the area and when you enter the wireless area you write down what games you have with you and whether or not they are download play compatible. That way when someone comes in they look at the whiteboard and say, "hey who has taiko? wanna download play?" or whatever. and when you leave just erase your name from the whiteboard. I'll even supply the whiteboard if need be.

That sounds like a good idea! Maybe we can get a list going so you can tell what groups are available and which are full (cos it would suck if I wanted to play Mario Kart but found out the group is full D:)

Nikki, I would only play that game again to wreak total havoc and devastation upon your puny little town. Planting flowers behind houses is just the beginning. Next I will be irate to the shopkeeper, redecorate your house without you knowing, and STEAL ALL THE ORANGES!!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Then I'll save and turn it off because I've done everything there is to do in the game......

It's a pretty pointless game if you look at it from a different perspective. BUT THE FUN NEVER STOPS SO I DON'T CARE!

Also you could say that many games are pointless. Like for example, my favorite game ever, DDR.

You stomp on arrows.

Whooo...

Pending the game room set up and space limitations(ie how many tables/systems/tvs will be set up and computers) we could fit a spot for a 'handheld lounge'. Whiteboard may be less easily accommodated as I'm not sure the hotels policy on tacking things to the wall. On the other hand if there is a small table or something free to use theer you can just prop the board there....

I've got about 10 or so DS games I can bring available for checkout if that is something that sounds doable. I just have to check how well it works in and out of a ds if it has a sticker from a label maker on it.... >.> That may cause issues.

I'll gladly build an easel for the whiteboard if I have dimensions.  It would take about $10 and 20 minutes to make.

Ah, this is going well. I'll definitely buy some beanbags once I find out space stuff from Senior Mark. I will make it my personal mission to complete the lounge, though. Above all else! Any other ideas for sweet stuff? I think I'll make some sort of simple Nintendo WIFI sign to put up so it's easier to spot.

I'm actually going to talk to Jaki about there being 2 gaming spaces at this point; with a wireless lounge and all the Bemani stuff I'm looking to bring in, I can see we won't fit in the Pacific Northwest Ballroom comfortably.

Put both next to each other and I'll never leave the room.

We won't have enough staff to man two rooms properly unless you can manage a separate room to handle all by yourself with just your stuff and the wireless hangout but would be unavailable for general checkout usage since we can't have checkouts leaving the main game room. At best you could get a small space for the wireless lounge if lucky.

We hardly had the staff to handle the room last year.
Title: Re: DS/Wireless handheld hangout?
Post by: kurosakiichigo666 on May 08, 2008, 01:42:53 am
The lounge will ideally be generally unmanned. Basically the idea is that it's just an area where people can chill and play some wireless games with others. I would like it to be laid back and not necessarily a whole room. It could just be in some unused corner in a game room but hopefully it'll be in a quieter area. We could have someone (possibly Kyle or myself if I manage to become staff) monitor Pictochat for content if you guys want. And don't worry, I got the whiteboard taken care of. Tofu, I'll let you know the dimensions when I get it. I like the easel idea....
Title: Re: DS/Wireless handheld hangout?
Post by: Kurokaizoku on May 09, 2008, 04:59:07 pm
Thats fine if its seperate and unmanned. It just would not be an official thing more just a fly by night operation especially out of the game room as it would no longer be a part of game room. If your staff we would need you doing other stuff in the game room. No matter what. The pictochat would just have to be a 'at your own risk' or 18 and under content if its reported...

We wouldnt have the staff to monitor that...even if it's *in* the game room. Remember bag check last year? Always under staffed and everyone was exhausted. What could happen is if you wanted to give up breaks you had to monitor it then no one can stop you but we probably wont have teh staff to designate to sitting theer watching people draw....

For the lounge, like kurosakiichigo666 said, it wouldn't really need to be monitored too closely.  Just make sure people aren't pictospamming penises or something.

As for a seperate room for bemani and rhythm games, what it would likely be is 2 to 5 DDR stations (depending on how many pads I can get made this summer and how many computers and TV's I can get), 2 or 3 Guitar Hero stations, 1 or 2 Rock Band stations, 2 open Bemani stations (a US PS2 and a JPS2, probably), and possibly a Pump It Up: Pro cabinet depending on whether or not we can work something out with KeeL.  There would be probably 4-10 games for checkout, which could very easily be handled by a single person.  With one person loosely monitoring the Bemani (me), one to keep an eye on the Harmonix, a back-up within 5 minutes, plus a Yojimbo nearby to make sure people aren't pilfering controllers, such a room could be easily managed.  This would also clear up a lot of space in the regular game room and bring the volume down a lot, so it could actually make it a bit easier for the staff.

My main concern is space; I need about 100 square feet of operation space per DDR/PIU cabinet, 150 for Rockband, and then about 50 per other station.  So, with everything plus a portable lounge, it would have to be around 1400 square feet, so something like 35'x40'.

EDIT: Looking at some maps, the Washinton Meeting Room might work.  It's only about 900 sq ft, but looks unclaimed and near the proposed LAN and Tabletop locations.
Title: Re: DS/Wireless handheld hangout?
Post by: Kurokaizoku on May 10, 2008, 12:04:59 pm
So thats proposing 3 staff with a checkout system and yojimbo. Thats taking away from the main room. I seriously doubt it would be able to happen as we still would need staff in the main room even w/o your equip since the con does still have rockband, guitar hero and DDR set up.
Title: Re: DS/Wireless handheld hangout?
Post by: DancingTofu on May 10, 2008, 10:44:09 pm
Uh, no.  It's 2 staff plus someone in the nearby LAN or Tabletop room who could help out if necessary.
Chances are I could handle the entire room myself if I have friends present now and then.  Any games that would be checked out would be games I'd just be toting around; 3-10 games in a bag really.  They'd be my games or the games of my friends and in no way the responsibility of the convention.  I don't see why you're battling this idea.
Title: Re: DS/Wireless handheld hangout?
Post by: Kurokaizoku on May 11, 2008, 11:29:13 pm
Because your signed up as game room staff and looking to hold a whole room yourself with possibly another game staff taking away from the staff needed in the main room. And as Jaki already stated in another thread all the loud gaming is supposed to be kept to the one room.
