I saw an ad for this and thought I'd let everyone know that the first Death Note movie is going to be in theaters May 20th and 21st. I know most people have already seen the movie(s), heck I own both, but I just thought It'd be cool to see it on the big screen. For more info go here:http://www.fandango.com/deathnote_115629/movieoverview (http://www.fandango.com/deathnote_115629/movieoverview)

Awesome! Like you said, although I own the movies I'd still love to go see it in theaters! It would be great to have a DN cosplay/movie meet up for it!
-
we just finished this the other week,we have the movies downloaded, but now its going to be tempting to wait and see it on the big screen
-
Ohh~~ I never saw the first Death Note movie so...maybe...? I think I can bust out my semi-Misa cosplay for it :3 POOOOOP the nearest movie theater is in Vancouver D:
-
Tis too bad, but Vancouvers good for me, theater's maybe 20 miles from me. on another note, Bleach: Memories of Nobody is also going to be in theaters, in June. I couldn't find the exact release date, the ad I've got only mentions the month. Know my luck, it's going to be on the day I go on "vacation". Here is more info on it:http://anime.ign.com/articles/862/862023p1.html (http://anime.ign.com/articles/862/862023p1.html)

Perhaps this would be a fun meet up? I'd be glad to pull out my L costume ^^ What theaters will this be in though? O.o And what would be a good one for everyone to meet up at? >.>

For me personally, Wilsonville (maybe a Fry's trip before/after movie?? There's also a Coldstone too!) or Hill Top 9 would work. Though Wilsonville would be great.. ^^;

Yay, I am so going then! I haven't seen any of them, not entirely anyway. Yay!
-
So there will be no showings in Portland? Fail, because I'm not going to drive all the way to the 'burbs.

Aw hell, it looks like it's only going to be playing at Cedar Hills. DD: That's a 30 minute drive for me, but maybe I can go. It would still be fun. ^^;
-
Ohohoh~~
I might be going.
>w<
Though i've already seen both a billion times.
>.>
<.<
-
Definitely going! =D Cedar Hills is close to me, too...
So, wait, how does this work? Are they showing the same movie both nights, or the first one one night and the second... the... second night. owo;
I think it's the latter, but still.
-
Its just the first movie both nights.
I have a flyer for it.Thanks to being a subscriber to Shojo beat. ;D

NEED RIDE
Well, technically no I don't NEED a ride but it'd be very cool if I could get one.
Maybe a ride from someone who has a duffle bag that belongs to me *eyeball's Mustash*
-
Shadow do ya live in/near Wilsonville? I live in Wilsonville and if I go....which would be most likely unless I am scheduled to work during the meet up... then maybe I can give you a ride. Heck it's a shorter commute than what I do for work everyday ;D

I live close to Wilsonville, but unfortunately I don't think the movie will be playing there. ;-; But that's so nice to offer to give me a ride! =D Thank you!
-
Yeah this movie is and extremely limited release. I am used to the drive, so I don't really care...well maybe I would care if it was only in Vancouver...but Beaverton is no big deal. So, yeah, just let me know.
-
Yeah it's a bummer it's not playing in more theaters. =( But I think I can get a ride and/or drive out there if I can get a friend to go. But thank you for the offer! =3
-
Yeah no problem.
-
You guys totally made me think that was tonight. I was all set to leave the house when vallie asked me why I was in a hurry. :P
-
XD nonono.
Its only april. :3
Dont get too excited tharr.xD
-
Meh. I'll just wait for it to come to the Laurelhurst.
-
I am going with my friends that I meet at Kumoricon (my first year) and we are gonna cosplay to it. I think it is playing at the Clackamas mall because I saw a trailer just on sunday so I am pretty sure it is gonna be there. Now I just need to reserve tickets!

Seriously?? That would be awesome if it was! That's so close! *crosses fingers*

I saw the trailer/ad for Death Note when I went to see Iron Man. The whole theater (which was basically my group of nerd friends) erupted when it came on. It was a great reminder because I had actually forgotten about this. I'm stoked, though. Can't wait to see it on the big screen!
-
Is it ok to watch the death note movies having never seen the anime?
-
I'm sure it's fine. You get the overall story either way. It is kind of like asking if it is okay to watch the anime without reading the manga. It doesn't matter in the long run. I have read the manga, but not seen the anime, or the movies. So, yeah... it doesn't matter. It's the same story, for the most part.

I agree, I just think I prefer to watch the anime because you get more depth to the story that way. I liked the movies but It felt like they just skimmed the surface of the story in some areas.

I can understand how that would unfortunately happen with a long show being turned into a feature-length movie. The little parts of the movie I have seen I've liked (mainly, the scenes with shinigami). I love how they presented Ryuk and Rem. I think it looks pretty awesome, heh.

Yes, the CGI was very well done. What else can you expect from a japanese production company other than amazing CGI. Oh, the movies end differently than the anime so if you watch the movies you can still watch the anime to see a different ending.
-
Ah, that's weird. I heard that the anime ends way differently than the manga, so I wonder how the movie will end compared to the two previous manifestations of the story? Hmmm, mystery.
-
The movies have the same basic story, but they do not cover the whole series, so sad

Hmmm, interesting. Has anyone seen (or maybe it isn't out yet) the L spinoff movie? I think that takes place before Death Note, about L and Raye Penber's wife how they worked together. Should be pretty cool.
-
I really want to see the spin off. I haven't found it yet. But I downloaded the other two movies and I really liked them. I thought they were well casted.

The book, Another Note, during the time frame you specified. L: Save the World, takes place during the second movie, or so I've heard.
-
I think the L spinoff movie is still in production.
-
Ooh, okay. I know I had read something about it on ANN, but I didn't remember the specifics.
-
I'm wondering if any Seattle or Portland theatres will show this.... because I AM SO THERE!
-

Do you mean the L spinoff?
-
Yes, and the regular movie.
-
At Sakuracon this year they had both the movies on DVD so maybe at Kumoricon they will have the L spinoff. I would buy it instantly.
-
Yeah, same here. I'll be looking to pick up any of the Death Note films if they have them.
And Garfielelric: there isn't a showing in Seattle, but a Vancouver theater is participating in the Death Note movie nights. http://www.fandango.com/deathnote_115629/movietimes?location=97207&date=5/21/2008 (http://www.fandango.com/deathnote_115629/movietimes?location=97207&date=5/21/2008)

-
Yeah, hehe.....hey, do you hear that? I think.......yeah.....I think I just heard a chibi drawing idea being born, lol
-
Maaaaan, there's no way I can get to any of these theatres. *sigh* So, do ya'll think it'll be sold at k-con? And what is this "L-Spinoff?"? Will that be sold too?
Thanks much. ^^;

The L Spinoff, entitled L: Change the WorLd, can be read about here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L:_Change_the_WorLd)
-
Ah, thank you very much. ^_^

tonighttonighttonight!
Now I have to make sure that Vallie and I have a ride. I think leashy is giving us a lift.
Hmmmmm...... I should check.

Well, I'm a little bit south of Seattle, but I already got tickets yesterday for Deathnote playing at my theater. That's kind of weird since Seattle definitely has a bigger theater/s.

Actually, we're currently rideless. Leashy not going.

Oh yeah, I just came back from seeing the Death-Note movie in Cedar Hills!(and it was awesome, of course!) From what I can understand, there were the same dub voice actors from the anime for it(it was showed in English), and it summarized a lot of the major events that happened in the beginning of the manga. I would say a lot more, but you're going to have to see the movie for yourselves! ^___^
-
after having seen the movie in japanese, the english version wasn't that good. it felt like the movie was muted and they were playing the anime in the background. The screaming fans were entertaining though
-
screaming fangirls are loud but entertaining, we got them tonight when I saw the movie. The dubbing wasn't great but it wasn't terrible, the cg was decent and the story progressed nicely. The vibe was awsome and I got to hand out a bunch of kcon fliers to people. Hahahaaha I now have minions in the Eugene area who will do my bidding and hand out fliers for me to a bunch of different locations. Tis good.
-
It was dubbed? I like the Japaneses version. I don't really like Light's voice in the dubbed anime. It's too bad I have to miss it. Damn school >_<
-
Yeah it was dubbed. I'm not sure if it is the same voice actors as in the anime, but it was well done for the feel of the characters, though lipsyncing is hard no matter what you do especially with live things. I would have much preferred subtitles. It was worth a watch none the less. Captions though, the movie was missing captions in english for all the japanese text that you end up seeing which I am assuming says important things like when he looks at the list of criminals and I am sure it says rapist or murderer or something but you wouldn't know unless you were fluent in japanese.
-
I'm still looking forward to it, dubbing doesn't tend to bother me much at all, so I think I'll be fine with it. Of course I prefer subbing, but beggars can't be choosers when a theater screening is involved, heh.
-
Yeah I guess thats true but being in Corvallis it is hard to justify a trip to Beaverton just for a movie, and one I have already seen.
-
I got used to the dub but not the guys behind me. We got stuck behind some stupid jock and his friend who is a Bleach fan. He kept loudly complaining about L sucking his thumb and "WTF is so funny?" when certain characters popped up. I hate jocks again! Yay!
-
not a huge fan of viz media when it comes to their dubs so I will probably not go see this one.
-
Lol so yeah it was worth a watch and I am in the Eugene area, Cinemark 17 in the Gateway Mall got the movie on Tuesday and has it tonight as well ^_^
<3
It might be faster and less costly to go to Springfield/Eugene than the portland area anyway.
That sucks about the jock though...
-
I'll probably be at the one at the Easport Plaza theater. o.o Hopefully I can get tickets. T.T
-
I'll be at the Cedar Hills Crossing Theater tonight; hope to see some of you there.
-
I'll also be at the Cedar Hills showing tonight with my friend. =3 I'll be cosplaying as Matt, don't hesitate to say hi! Hope to see some of you there!
-

I'll be sure to keep an eye out! (And, off-topic, but I think I saw you at Uwajimaya this weekend. You were dressed as Shadow, but I didn't want to guess wrong or make myself look dumb, so I just said nothing, lol)

So, I set out with two of my buddies last night to go see this at Cascade 16 in Vancouver. We had bought our tickets last Thursday while getting tickets for Prince Caspian's midnight release. However, when we got into the theater (a few minutes late) , we quickly discovered a problem....there was no seats whatsoever. I'm not kidding...there was about six or so people sitting on the floor! We had a quick caucus about whether or not we should stay and join the people on the floor before deciding to leave, ask for a refund, and just go get sushi. LOL.
I mean I knew it was going to be popular, but the fact that there were so many people that people were sitting on the floor just threw me. LOL.
-
Oh man! I can't believe I forgot about this...I remembered last night, but it was too late to get to the theater in time. I guess it was a good thing that I procrastinated on buying a ticket.
-
I went to the theater and they were like "It's only playing in washington." Even though they had the poster up. I wanted to stab the guy in the face. >.< So we saw Baby Mama instead. XD
-
Yeah, last night sucked in the sense that Kahlan and I went out to Cedar Hills Crossing to watch Death Note, but we didn't get tickets in advance. I guess we underestimated how big a demand there was for the movie, because we got there and guess what? All full. T_T So we went home and hunted for video editing software instead, lol. What a night, right? Did anyone go to the Cedar Hills who can say how it went?
-
wow... i know we were full but you guys sold out???? jeeze...lol btw i managed to get my hands on the deathnote promotional poster that they had up at the springfield theater ^_^ one of the few perks of working at the theater!!

Yeah, you gotta consider most movies might stay out for up to a month; about 30 days for people to choose when to see it. This one was only out for 2 days. Even I didn't think the fan base was going to be as big as it was.
Ever since I went to see Fellowship of the Ring and found out people were standing down both aisles, I've started getting to the theater at least 15 minutes early.
-
I was planning on going to the Cedar Hills showing but couldn't go at the last minute.. TT__TT But from what EveofAbyss said, maybe that wasn't such a bad thing. oO Wow.
